Sadly they don’t display the 6 flags at the castle anymore... pitty... I used to use them to tell the story: history of our nation in order of occupation 😉 great Videos on SA thx
As an American from California, those six South African flags remind me of the six flags over Texas, which, in addition to being a theme park, is also a term for the six flags of countries that have ruled Texas over the course of it's history: Spain (1590-1821), France (1684-1690, 1800-1803), Mexico (1821-1835), Texas (1835-1845 as an independent country, 1845-present as a US state), the United States (1845-present), and the Confederate States (1861-1865, unrecognized country). Further information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_flags_over_Texas
Interesting, about the Texas flags. Those six flags at the Castle should have remained, being good for tourism. Incidentally the USA and South Africa have had similar histories, and so on.
Seems like the world can learn so much from South Africa. US can learn old monuments or flags don't necessarily have to be wiped out as they are part of your history. India can & must definitely learn that a country with multiple languages shouldn't try to impose one chosen language favoured by the ruling elites & expect a harmonious nation. Everyone should be treated equally & with equal respect whether you consider them equal or not.
Yeah I think we should try to learn from it and improve our societies accordingly. Let's not let the lessons of the past be wasted by learning nothing from them :)
Johan Strydom If you're talking about South African govt then I'd say I don't know how good or bad the present govt is handling that but at least 10 other languages are still legally equal & probably allowed to be used by it's citizens. Unfortunately in India we're at a stage where govt only allows 2 languages at the national level including for services like post, railway, etc. & English is one of them but always discouraged from using in the name of patriotism or anti colonialism. That only leaves 1 language favoured by the govt which govt tries to push everywhere including states where it's basically a foreign language. So in my perspective SA that once did something similar in favour of Afrikaans is at least on the right path. Of course if English happens to be a neutral language in SA as it certainly does in India it'll be used more & private citizens should try to reduce it's overuse. Indian govt ever since independence have tried to get rid of English so one regional language could be used everywhere but failed every time. They're still trying that despite change in govts.
Johan Strydom I think whichever linguistic community takes their language seriously should be able to start something that'll help their languages & of course it includes building institutions for them. I too hope it'll happen coz I think SA at least recognises those languages to be legally equal to English & Afrikaans. This should allow private citizens to use the law in forcing their govt to make efficient use of all languages. I think countries like Belgium, Canada, etc. does that. Indians weren't so lucky to get all our major languages recognised to be legally equal so many times those languages are made optional at best in their own homeland leaving people to choose between English (which not many are able to use) & hindi (which is mandatory in schools even in non hindi states for non hindi population which is more than 70%). But I'm personally hopeful if South Africans take advantage of their linguistic legal equality they should be able to make their languages flourish but it'd depend on much they want it coz now they have a choice (at least legally). I've a question coz it seems you're South African & I always wanted to know this. Why doesn't South African languages have their own homeland or states? Coz such territorial arrangements exist not just in India but also in other countries like Belgium, Canada & also Ethiopia.

I appreciate the explanation in this video. I'm glad to hear that the Dutch color orange is represented at least a little bit, combined with the British red color. I always thought that it was a bit odd that orange did not appear in this new flag which was so obviously attempting inclusivity of all groups in the newly created post-Apartheid South Africa.
Pádraig Leahy Yes, now everyone in South Africa is equally poor thanks to the retarded black majority government in addition to having more racial laws on the books and an ongoing genocide.
I'll light a candle next to Rhodesia's. Such a shame so many brainwashed people still think Mandela was anything but a terrorist and genocidal maniac. The Boer need to get out or reconsolidate soon, I can't imagine how people still believe the "Rainbow nation" myth. South Africa is a living hell and has been for decades.
@@Vukuzenzele You're missing the point. 1) You cannot find something that was not lost. 2) You cannot "found" upon a land that was already "FOUNDED" by the millions of people who already lived there. That would be like Chrysler attempting to "found" it's company inside the factory where GM was already manufacturing it's vehicles....or even worse, for Chrysler to try to steal the whole building from GM, like the Dutch tried to steal an entire country in Africa away from AFRICANS, taking away all of the land then proclaiming themselves to be "AFRICAN" by rearranging a couple letters in the name, calling themselves afrikaan, as if that idea wasn't just ridiculously stupid...and obvious!🤦♂🤷♂😂
Dutch to Afrikaners: Why did you have the union Jack in your flag? I thought you fought to be free from Brittain? Afrikaners to Dutch: Why do you say in your national anthem that you've always honored the king of Spain? I thought you fought to be free from Spain?
The Afrikaners are the descendants of the Cape Dutch. The Cape Dutch were happy living under the British queen. The descendants of the Trekboere, the Boers, fought a war against the British while the Cape Dutch stayed neutral and some hostile to the Boers.
Good points about the Cape Dutch. Actually, in South Africa, especially outside the Cape Town area, it seems that little is known about the Cape Dutch. And, many times even forgotten about.
Regarding the Union Jack in the flag, it was to symbolise in some way unity of British and Afrikaners. There was a time when they were considering removing the Union Jack, so that the flag would be easier to draw.
Ranâ Onety - It is a lovely flag, but I only see sadness in it now. Please look into the Boers current situation, they receive no aid or assistance and are being genocided by the current government. They need awareness now more than ever.
History With Hilbert Thanks for asking :) It's a username and I like it because Spanish speaking people know me as a frog, Romanians as a scar, Indians call me Rana Ji and Latin afficionados ask me where the bos has gone(Rana rupta et bos). As it is such a widespread name, I could not leave it alone and had to add numbers, but I hate numbers, so I decided for an alternative spelling of 10 (onety). There's the story behind it and thanks again for the video :).
Hi awesome vid, only thing is it was not the boer that moved out of cape town, they where called the voortrekkers, also the oranje blanje blou flag was not the apparteid flag it was the flag from the Union of South Africa and republic of south africa
Thank you for sharing this. I used to play Pocket Soccer and the South African flag was one of the team colors I often chose. Initially, I thought the color scheme was garish, overkill but I knew there was logic behind it. Also, I chose South Africa as my way of welcoming the beleaguered state back to the family of nations. "District 9" was a good movie. I know I have no idea what it's like to be South African. I can imagine it's still tough and I wish South Africa well as she goes forward. Let me say this. I chose the flag of St. Louis, Missouri, USA to be my sigil. I am grateful to be a citizen of St. Louis, but I am also mindful of her many flaws. St. Louis is the most segregated city in what was the northernmost of the slave states. We know about de facto apartheid in this region. So, I can imagine that South Africa is still wrestling with internal strife that threatens to tear the nation apart. Keep fighting, South Africans, to overcome your differences and find common ground. If the USA can survive this long, so can you. Black or white, you're native born and you share a wonderful country. Keep respecting each other, and keep trusting God.
Oof. Actually hearing my grandpa being mentioned hit differently. It's a good video that's quite accurate from my knowledge. I'd suggest reading Flying With Pride for interest

The green of the new flag is from the South African republic flag, together with the red white and blue which also represents the British. They might have tried to make the old flag illegal but most of the old colours live on in the majority of the new flag. Just using different shapes has disguised how much of the old colours are still in the new flag, and not alot of people who were against the british and boere have taken notice. I'm actually quite surprised that this flag has not also been banned for the majority of colours it still represents. I guess the boere and British live on.
as a South African I Appreciate that like the Language but the Language is not Dutch, Yes it is a Close Relative of the Dutch Language but it has a good amount of Differences, and also it’s true name is Afrikaans which I am fluent with.

'Trek' being to mean a long and arduous journey. Can see a South African link with Star Trek. I'm in South Africa, and when I first saw Star Trek mentioned, I thought it was local. I also thought that Star Trek fans here should not be called Trekkers, as it would mean something else, but rather Trekkies. That is even if it's actually Trekkers, with Trekkies regarded as derogatory in Star Trek fandom.
In South Africa there used to be Trek petrol/gasoline, and Trek Airways. They went bankrupt unfortunately. If they remained, then they could have jokingly been Star Trek petrol, and Star Trek Airways.
1st it’s ridiculous to call the old national flag it the apartheid flag. When America does bad things we don’t call it the slavery flag, we don’t call the Union Jack the war crimes flag. 2nd, the new flag doesn’t represent Europeans and Africans.. it represents Africans. Afrikaans people are African, they speak a language developed in Africa, they have been in Africa just as long as black people in America. To say white Africans are not African is to say black Americans are not American.
bruh, I'm a South African and i didn't know this (i just knew the old one) also this guy's pronunciation makes me question my own pronunciation and i use these words all the time and pronunciation is something most people don't care about making the effort for.

If you think about it, the old South African flag was really 9 flags. It had: the flag itself(1) The UK flag(2) The English, Scottish and Irish flag within the UK flag (3,4,5) The 2 other flags which each had a flag within it so 9.
The whole flag (1) The Prinsenvlag (2) The Dutch Flags in OVS and Transvaal (3,4) OVS and Transvaal (5,6) UK Flag (7) England, Scotland, Ireland (8,9,10) Woah

There is a court case going on now (May 2022) about whether flying the apartheid flag constitutes hate speech (since it is a symbol of apartheid, and apartheid was a system of racial discrimination), or should be allowed as part of freedom of speech. The case is being heard in South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal. This case is itself a follow-up from a 2019 case (i.e. this is the appeal of the 2019 case) where the court ruled that flying the apartheid flag constitutes "hate speech" under Section 10(1) under South Africa's Equality Act .i.e. is either "(a) hurtful (b) harmful or (c) promotes or propogates hatred", on the "basis of group characteristics" (i.e. race, gender, sexual orientation). Section 10(1) of the Act does allow displays of the apartheid flag that are of a bona fide engagement of artistic creativity, academic or scientific inquiry, and fair and accurate reporting in the public interest; so the flag is allowed as part of a work of art, or in a museum or similar (such as at 3:50 in the video), or as a learning resource (such as this video itself)

The only gripe I have is that I always want them to be longer and go deeper with even more information because they always leave me wanting more :p
It's a great way to relax between my studies. I might even send you guys some money if you create a makersupport account. You will be the very first content makers ever I will give money since I dont have much to spend as long as I havent paid off my student loan debt
Thanks very much - I really appreciate all your support! I'm not sure how long you've been with the channel but I'll link some related videos which do go into more detail below :)
I haven't yet thought about making a patreon or makersupport or something similar yet but I again really appreciate that you'd be willing to help out despite your student debt!
Can you do on Northumbria please
YES! Great idea!
History With Hilbert HELL YEAH
My favourite SA flag trivia is that it was meant to be a transitionary flag, but everyone loves it so it stuck around
Eskerrik asko! I enjoyed this, short and comprehensive. ☆♡☆
Euskara? Thank you!
R.I.P South Africa (1652-1994)
A first world nation becoming a third world nation...
She up Nazi 😂😂😂😂😂
Pádraig Leahy Yes, now everyone in South Africa is equally poor thanks to the retarded black majority government in addition to having more racial laws on the books and an ongoing genocide.
I'll light a candle next to Rhodesia's. Such a shame so many brainwashed people still think Mandela was anything but a terrorist and genocidal maniac.
The Boer need to get out or reconsolidate soon, I can't imagine how people still believe the "Rainbow nation" myth. South Africa is a living hell and has been for decades.
Even if you look at it that way,he was still technically a terrorist
The y shape is also like 2 paths coming together
I like the first South African flag more I'm from South Africa
Agreed. I don't really like Yellow or green. But I do like black.
the cape was not found the whites arrived to cape its not like the cape was hidden i mean khoi san people were leaving there
Founded, not found. Small, yet important difference. Much like the difference between living and leaving.
@@patriotcitzen7116 Ai shame, good luck with life.
the old SA flag was so drippy the new one sucks
Loving the history of Suid Afrika my boet
boetie got it right
Truly a pretty flag and story :)
Yea... The Rainbow nation is communist propaganda and South Africa is a living hell, not so pretty if you see anything actually happening there.
I am sorry to learn that. The thoughts behind my comment were that the flag looks very nice and that the video was well scripted.
Ranâ Onety - It is a lovely flag, but I only see sadness in it now. Please look into the Boers current situation, they receive no aid or assistance and are being genocided by the current government. They need awareness now more than ever.
Thanks very much Ranâ - I'm glad you enjoy it and I agree! Can I ask where the name Ranâ is from, or is it just a username you came up with?
History With Hilbert Thanks for asking :)
It's a username and I like it because Spanish speaking people know me as a frog, Romanians as a scar, Indians call me Rana Ji and Latin afficionados ask me where the bos has gone(Rana rupta et bos).
And, of course 'apartheid' has to be brought into it.

No thanks, I'd rather have peace!
Oof. Actually hearing my grandpa being mentioned hit differently. It's a good video that's quite accurate from my knowledge. I'd suggest reading Flying With Pride for interest
It's nothing but a runaway veld fire dragging out once beautiful country to hell.
Or you mean where 90% are now oppressing 10% of the population?
@@JUAN_OLIVIER yea thats true the only country where affirmative action promotes the majority and the minority. Till we stop paying taxes. Dan gaan ons sien hoe mense lang trane huil

Jon vanrebeek 😂😂. I do not mean to offend.your pronsination was good (I'm south African)
Wish SA flag was the flag of Australia and New Zealand union...
Are you dutch, because you prenouncuation of words like voc are very dutch like
people who say "africans are for africans" should then not be against "europe for europeans"
jamaica flag + netherlands flag= south africa flag
I like the old one
Very interesting as usual.
Thank you :D
I disagree with the video
At school they taught a different version
Red is bloodshed during the wars of South Africa
Blue is for the oceans
Green the vegetations and forests
Gold for the mineral wealth
Black is for the people in South Africa
White is for peace
That's not true
You speak afrikaans well. Well done. SUBSCRIBED
I was taught this
white-the white nation
Black-the black nation
Blue-the amazing blue sky we are famous for
Red-the blood that was spilled during the Apartheid
Green-the green land we have
Yellow-the gold we have that's why the province is called *Gauteng* wich means Place Of Gold
Thank you
as a kid in highschool they dont cover alot of history so thank u for great informative vids. i like to think im a kinda historian and not many people to taught history in my school so thanks
What did the Rhodesia flag look like?
Also looks similar to the flag of Nigeria.
Wer gönnt sich dieses Video auch für den englisch Unterreicht 😂😂
The green of the new flag is from the South African republic flag, together with the red white and blue which also represents the British.
They might have tried to make the old flag illegal but most of the old colours live on in the majority of the new flag. Just using different shapes has disguised how much of the old colours are still in the new flag, and not alot of people who were against the british and boere have taken notice. I'm actually quite surprised that this flag has not also been banned for the majority of colours it still represents. I guess the boere and British live on.
SAILING DUTCH,MEN
The only kind
Even though I'm from the United states the Dutch language sounds cool has a nice sound to it
Oh well, both the USA and South Africa started out as partly Dutch, and then British, colonies.
as a South African I Appreciate that like the Language but the Language is not Dutch, Yes it is a Close Relative of the Dutch Language but it has a good amount of Differences, and also it’s true name is Afrikaans which I am fluent with.
@@rouleauxvandermerwe336 what are some of the differences?
not first
Close but no cigar
Great video, thank you so much. Would you consider doing a video on the Boer Republic called Stellaland? I found some of the republics stamps on EBay, and would like to know more about it.
Yes! I think a video on the lesser known Boer Republics will be on the cards after I make my Second Boer War video :)
Keep doing great quality content, my fellow RUclipsr 🙂👍
Thanks!
Trek is from South Afrika, from the great trek, and the great trek is only one. Trekkies originated in South Afrika! The final frontier!
Yes, there are a few words from Afrikaans that made their way into English
A beautiful specimen indeed.
YEESSSSSS
Though if you need any help with the second Boer war video I can help
After all who better to ask then a Boer .
Thanks! I'll keep it in mind when I get to making it!
Also you nailed providing an unbiased view in the apartheid section
And, of course 'apartheid' has to always be brought into it.
If you think about it, the old South African flag was really 9 flags.
It had: the flag itself(1)
The UK flag(2)
The English, Scottish and Irish flag within the UK flag (3,4,5)
The 2 other flags which each had a flag within it so 9.
The whole flag (1)
The Prinsenvlag (2)
The Dutch Flags in OVS and Transvaal (3,4)
OVS and Transvaal (5,6)
UK Flag (7)
England, Scotland, Ireland (8,9,10)
Woah
Dankie History With Hilbert. The picture of flags at the castle is no more. It was on the Afrikaans Nieuws that an ANC minister said that an Apartheid's flag(1927-1994) is illegal. Also an Afrikaans teacher lost her job because she had shown all the South African flags in her class. It is a new country with new of different rules.
The Y looks like part of the Union Jack.
A dutch flag in a dutch flag hehe
100% the top is pure red, not some mixture.
I was also wondering about that. I'm in South Africa, and is the first time I even heard of that.
Hilbert, I really like your videos but maybe you could do a little bit more to discourage racists in the comment section.
Niels of the western tribes
Well, Hilbert could distance himself openly from racists and delete the worst racist comments - other youtubers do that and succeed in creating an atmosphere that doesn't encourage racists.
Historically speaking, sensorship is much much deadlier then racism
Merry Christmas, Hilbert!
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!
When it comes to Southern Africa usually four races come to mind Khois, Sans, Bantus, And Europeans
how is it white people can pronounce Boer lingo precisely yet can't pronounce Thabo?
Apartathart is when all the black ppl live somewhere and the white ppl live somewhere else like the colou
South African Red Ensign was based but the Boers did not like

It's nice there's so many languages but it'd be a nightmare to sing!
the new south africa couldn't even write their own national song. Nkosi sikelel iafrika is a prayer which they adopted as the song. pathetic
WILHELM & INA MARAIS The first verse was writen by enoch songtonga who was South African dumbass
@morton christie He composed the song in 1897 long after almost all languages of South Africa had become written what is your point?
@morton christie So much anger jesus. i mean i could get into evolutionary biology, cultural reasons, the large role geography played, natural environment as to why there was a ceiling that Africa could not develop past the iron age but the fact you said stone age and that you seem to be a blithering idiot i believe that is probably beyond you.
There is only one nice flag and this is the old South Africa flag
Hy praat Afrikaans wie het dit verwag?
I love the South African flag the one that came out in 1994
Anyone else see orange instead of red?
Ich verstehe kein Wort lol 😂😂😂
Great stuff! Very interesting this flag is too
Thank you!
Baputotswana and Viva la LaVaalia. South Africa still has colonies living in their own world which i believe may soon end the parties wrongfull polarization practices. God bless Africa.

I wanted to knw the meaning of this flag .what you said is deferent frm wht school told us.eg yellow was fp gold n here you tell us Y nd where this colours were used..m gon check d ada movie .not your as its not usefull my kid's home work
Why doesn't the Netherlands still use the Prinsenflag?
because pc culture hates it since it was used by the NSB National-Socialist Union. This happend during the nazi occupation of the European Netherlands
And orange is far harder to see at sea.
But the Statenvlag replaced the Prinsenvlag in the 16th century
tbh I'm not completely sure.
Its part because of the division of statists and orangists.
Republicans and monarchists.
I figure the statists would rather not use a colors accociated with the dutch crown on their national flag.
I'm fairy certain it isn't completely clear even for historians.
Either way the Prinsenvlag is way cooler
زب بدوي كبير مش مطهر I agree completely
Great video!!! Why did I think the Indian flag was in the middle of the old flag?? Alongside the Union Jack and Dutch tricolour?? 🤔🤔🤔
