    Gary i think the next time you have nasi lemak.. just keep it simple.. no more than 2 dish with the nasi lemak.. a Sambal and a Kari or a Rendang is more than enough.. too many dishes will kill off the nasi.. next stop should be nasi Kandar Pelita..

      True. Should just get the basic one with boiled egg. Then u can taste the quality of the sambal and fried anchovies.

    Wanjo is a tourist spot in KL. Their sambal less spicy to suit various tourist from Europe, US, Aus etc. You may try Village Park next.

      try nasi lemak sotong au3 and without any fanfares , a nasi lemak bungkus (pyramid shaped parcels of nasi lemak)

      @@theroamingcook on the contrary Village Park is the tourist spot, Wanjo is more authentic Malay Nasi Lemak..If you want more spicy sambal like others recommended then Tanglin is another local place you should try

    Best to google the dishes if you are not sure.
    Normally from what I see, the sotong is the dried type which is dried brown cuttlefish soaked in soda bicarbonate solution until plumped up. Two types: fresh squid which is whitish in color or the dried cuttlefish which is brown due being dried.

    Oooh, that looks nice. I just spent five days in Singapore before coming to Bangkok. I had a couple of the local Singaporean versions of Nasi Lemak, in Hawker Centres as well as in a restaurant famous for them. But none of them looked as rich and varied as this. Looks lovely. Also had Hainanese Chicken Rice in Singapore, which was also very nice. (P.S. - I'm the German bloke who ran into you at Wang Lang market yesterday 🙂 ).

      sound really good , sg have good food but if you wanted to taste local malaysian better come here to malaysia , like nasi lemak , laksa and etc , we also have our own chicken rice , though i love sg ver of chicken rice too!!

      Singapore nasi lemak is sad. It always comes with fried chicken and doesn't have any gravy like Malaysian nasi lemak. Gravy plays a very important part as it gives flavour to the whole dish.

    Gary, I spent many months living and traveling around Malaysia. Obviously, I ate loads of the food there. The ONLY food I miss from there is Assam Laksa and if you didn't have that you seriously missed out!

      @@theroamingcook I must have been in Penang at least a half a dozen times. It's so touristy. Never found real authentic Assam Laksa prepared by Malay in Penang! Need to get away from there for the best Assam Laksa! Assam Laksa is to Malaysia what Tom Yam is to Thailand or what Pho is to Vietnam.

      @@theroamingcook Right! That's nonsense! Assam Laksa is great all over Malaysia. Everyone has a little different recipe just like with Ukrainian Borsch. It's best to try it in many different places to see where you like it the most. My favorite is anywhere they have travel stops or bus stations! I had a car and drove all over the country!

    So happy to see you eating over in KL! If I had known, would have loved to bring you and your family on some other known dishes! Kinkin Pan Mee and MTR were the absolute right choices too!
    By the way, yup, chicken and beef rendang on a plate is done here too -- no judgement at all! :D

    Actually, there are many different tastes and flavours of nasi lemak, depending on the preferences of the cooks. However, the main ingredients, which are anchovy sambal and coconut milk cooked rice, are practically identical. Only locals who are able to judge the true flavour of nasi lemak are aware of the many places that serve mouth-watering nasi lemak. Although nasi lemak is often relatively simple, it tastes best when paired with superb anchovies sambal, cucumber, hard boiled eggs and peanuts as a complementary breakfast food. However, many vendors now provide it with a variety of side dishes, as if it were a noon meal.

    The basic nasi lemak has sweet sambal is because to reduce spiciness, and to complement salty fried anchovies and enhance coconut flavour. It is true when people said having too much side dishes will kill the harmony of nasi lemak.

    Hi Gary... Ty for your honest feedback on the Nasi Lemak. You can have both beef and chicken rendang together, a bit of the sambal, pegedil (deep fried whipped potato with chives) pronounced as per ger dell, lots of fried anchovies, cucumber and fried peanuts. When you come to the East Coast Terengganu... Try Nasi Dagang, Laksam, Laksa with red gravy .... And the local delicacies .... Look me up

    After try Nasi Lemak in Malaysia..... when you get back to Thailand.
    You should looking for. ....ข้าวมันส้มตำ (Krawman Somtum) ......this thai menu may be start more than 100years in Thailand. .....the method they cooked rice (with coconut milk) may be same style with ...Nasi Lemak
    The different are all other ingredients what you eat with rice.
    Anyway not too easy to find krawman Somtum >>> because it out of trends.

    If you go to South of peninsular Malaysia state, Like Muar district in Johor state, in rural town their Sambal less sweet but more spicey i think, in rural or town of Muar, rural places like Parit Jawa!!! they still got less sweets sambal and mildly hot not super hot!!! This because KL under influence Northen peoples and also indonesian taste!!!

    The true presentation of the nasi lemak was to wrap the rice inside it while it was hot & steamy which when it cools down (around 5 minutes), its add a unique aromatic and flavor to the nasi lemak itself.
    It is recommended to be serve & eaten with the basic set of condiments (wanjo didn't include fried ground peanut). Any add-on side dishes should be minimal so not to overtake the sambal taste. My personnal fav would be either marinated fried chicken or the cockle sambal.

    Okay my ❤️ nasi lemak with of course the obligatory coconut rice, spicy and not too sweet sambal, (soft boiled😇) egg, fresh cucumber, fried peanuts, fried ikan bilis and for me something with chicken or beef rendang.

    My favorite dish to eat with nasi lemak are the paru (fried lungs), ikan masin (salted fish) and bergedil (potato croquette). I like my food a bit on the salty side. The 3 combo is just muahh 😘😘

    mixing all is the key with every nasi dish in malaysia, else it might be too sweet or too salty if u eat it one by one.. that2 crunchy anchovies is there to give salty and crunch to that sweet samal mixing it all with the santan nasi would be falvour explosion

      Yep, combine with neighbour Thailand, both have unbeatable culinary delight. But malaysian dishes have Chinese and indian influences too which you cannot find elsewhere. Our spices came from everywhere including india and China.

    Local normally never eat Nasik lemak by add on bergedil....
    Just take the basic..sambal,boiled egg,anchovy....if U want to add on...either rendang or another sambal or fried chicken (either one)

    Depending on the cook, those people from the East Coast like to cook with sugar in their food. So, best to ask if these are kelantan style food (normally sweet) . The Indian Muslim (mamak style) is more Indian influenced, then Indian style and Chinese style nasi lemak are all slightly different. So it doesn't mean that the best nasi lemak covers over all the races. I like nasi lemak Indian style because their sambal has more savoury taste due to lots of onions.

    All I can say is WoW! I know I'd be partial to the beef rendang, the beef lung, the cockles and the cuttlefish/squid, but it all looks like a winner of a meal.

    I'm a person that doesn't really fancy sweet (kuah) gravy or curry so from what you described the dishes and sambal, maybe that nasi lemak wasn't the nasi lemak I want to try. I'm more prefer sour and spicy curry and sambal. So the combination of sweet coconut rice + sour and sweet dishes and curry now that's what I call the best nasi lemak. Not the sweet coconut rice, sweet sambal or sweet curry 😣

    I'm in Vietnam, today I just happened to have chicken rendang, at a tiny place owned by an Indonesian couple here. Quite good. I guess Malaysian and Indonesian rendangs are more or less the same thing, no? I do know another place that (I think) has beef, across from the New World Hotel in an alley. I haven't tried it yet but hear it's very good.

      Malays came from the 'Indonesian' archipelago long ago. They are serumpun they always say. They are words in Philippines, Indonesia, malay that can be used.

      @@MisterPhat serumpun is same race or origin or family. Something like that. Example in tagalog mahal (Filipino language) can mean expensive. Malay word mahal is expensive. Carabao is buffalo in tagalog, malay is kerbau.

    not curry sauce but rendang gravy. curry is something more to indian dishes. and indian curry does not using galangal or lemon grass.

    if you taste a sweet in a spicy sambal chili, it is used to tone down the spicy level of spiciness of chilies.

    I am triggered by the sambal on your arm 😅. Anyways, hope you enjoy your stay here!
    By the way, I personally don't like to have nasi lemak with too much of the sambal and rendang going on - just too overwhelming. In fact, the best for me would be rice, a little bit of sambal, fried egg and a small amount of chicken/beef curry along with some peanuts and anchovies. That way you get the taste of the rice shining through.

    The best nasi lemak & more spicy only in kampung-kampung. Secondly if you want to eat the best nasi kandar i.e. hidden gem in KL- Restoran Nasi Kandar Ibramsha Sdn. Bhd. located at 68, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, City Centre, 50100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.

    dear Gary..Malaysia has too many varieties of Rendang from the east of Malaysia to The northern part of Malaysia 😀.As 4 me ,i like Negeri Sembilan State Rendang, Perak Rendang Tok and Sarawak Rendang.Some rendang a just simply adding tumeric, galangal, lemon grass , chillies without any onions such as rendang Negeri Sembilan.Yet in Perak state adding local bay leaves 🤭 or daun salam or daun Samak is a must in rendang Tok but the composition of tumeric, galangal, lemon grass are compulsory.Some district added in tumeric leaves to enhance the taste such as in Sarawak.But I do noticed some states n district added in some daun limau purut or kafir lime leaves. This is an influence from Minang Rendang in Indonesia .This is bcoz due to their ancestor.But rendang is must eaten with lemang .Ask around where about u can get lemang . *The must lemang* are from Seremban or negeri Sembilan .Do enjoy yourself in Malaysia .My suggestion is *do try the kampong stall for nasi lemak* , its more cheaper, tastier .😁

    Hi Gary, thanks for trying our food. By the way, where are you from? Do you mind a bit of lesson on our Malaysian culinary coz you seems to generalize our food a bit too much.
    1st thing for you to know is that rendang has its root in Indonesia - not Thailand. Our Indonesian friends are going to smack you if they know of this. Already they are not happy with us claiming rendang is from M'sia.
    2nd, rendang or sambal is not curry. Curry has its origin from subcontinent of India. Not similar at all to our sambal/rendang.
    3rd is that our sambal is made a bit sweeter to suit our western/far east friends who can't handle the spiciness of the sambal.
    4th, nasi lemak tend to have natural sweetness from coconut milk, the main ingredient. We do not put any sugar in our rice.
    Lastly, nasi lemak is actually a simple food for breakfast with rice, anchovy, sambal, hard boiled egg, peanut & cucumber. And you are suppose to mix it when eating nasi lemak. All the rendang or anything else is an extra. Please don't lump it together as nasi lemak.

      I’m definitely not trying to generalize, sorry if it came across like that. I know that rendang originated in Minangkabau . I didn’t say it had its roots in Thailand. I said the ingredients are similar to Thai curry, which they are. Forgive me, 50 percent of my audience are Thai so that is the closest reference I can give for them.
      Actually curry is a word in Tamil for sauce or gravy so to call Indian masala curry is actually generalising. This is a western thing.
      Thank you for teaching me how to eat Nasi Lamak, though, I will feel much more comfortable when I order next time 😀 I think I did slightly better in my next video but not by much 😂

    If you love Rendang recommend you to go to Lemang To'ki, lemang+rendang is another popular Malay dish

    I’m trying to persuade my son to move to the far east when he graduates. Quality of life, weather, cost of living they are much better than the UK. This country is going down the pan everyday. NHS, social care, cost of living, transport, weather, etc they are all in a mess, cannot see improvement and progress in the near medium future.

    Original sambal nasi lemak is not so sweet. Recently, most Malaysian dishes (Malay, Chinese and Indian) started adding a lot sugar for taste (This happens in recent years). Sambal becomes Jam 🤣🤣😂🤣

    Is cuttlefish just another word for squid? I've always just called it "squid", was never quite sure what cuttlefish was, if there was any difference. Whoever came up with this word "cuttlefish"", I hope they realize it wasn't a fish. ;-)

    Different shops will have slightly different sambals. Some will be better than others. Some places will put in loads of onion into their sambal, also resulting in, what is in my opinion, a cloyingly sweet taste. I don't like it.
    The hunt for one's favourite sambal is a real thing for Malaysians.

      There are some words that are not the same. Example they say bisa, we say boleh. Indonesian words has many English words that are borrowed. Malay words has few English borrowed words so more original. But due to Portuguese influence long ago, it also has quite similar words with Portuguese. They call senior people bapak as a mark of respect for men, ibu for women. we use pakcik for men, makcik for women. Project they use proyet, we use projek. For white people, malay use orang putih. Or slang used is mat sallleh for men, minah salleh for women. Indonesia language use bule for white folks.
