Oh dear. It's very difficult to get it right when you don't really know what you are looking for in a sixty year professional career, to date. The Munich 1977 is definitely the version of this song to do, and the 18 minute journey is worthwhile. The version recorded at Donington just a few years later is shorter and very different, showing how Blackmore's style was constantly evolving throughout his career, and has moments of genius. Other great Blackmore performances on video are, Wring That Neck from the Bilzen Jazz Festival in 1969 and Fires at Midnight by Blackmore's Night from Paris in 2006. Good luck.

This is 2016, Ritchie was 71years old at the time and recovering from surgery on his arthritic fingers earlier in the year. Still a legend, saw him at the Birmingham gigs 2016 and 17, loved it even though it wasn't the Ritchie of old I'd seen many times

You need to listen to Temple of the King 1995 live. It's the best version of the song.

You really should have reacted to the 1977 Munich version. This is Ritchie at 70 years old in this 2016 version - 39 years later. It is very good, but not great. Sorry this pales to the version we mentioned, but 18 minutes is worth the experience. Highly recommend you do visit this classic concert and feel the magic. If you are worried about the length, here is the song cut in half at the solo part. Part 2 of the song -- ruclips.net/video/lm9wejfyAbE/видео.html

this one was fairly recent, after he took a couple decades away from rock. (he does rennaisance music now with his wife) so maybe not on fire like in his younger years. anything from the 70s or even 80s would be his prime. he recorded "Made In Japan" in 1972. argueably one of the best double live rock albums ever.

I was very excited until I realized which one you were reacting to. This is ridiculous.
People please listen up… If you’re going to suggest a song at least take the time to listen to what’s out there so you can suggest the right one to listen to.
If you’re going to suggest he react to “Catch the Rainbow” live and it’s not from Live in Munich 1977 it means you have no business suggesting songs because you don’t know wtf you’re talking about. Period.

Thank you for checking out more Ritchie Blackmore. Though this one is a soulful rendition, it is not Ritchie in his prime. There are some far better versions of Catch the Rainbow from the 1970s on the "On Stage" album: ruclips.net/video/ZuKT10Eu_Q4/видео.html , and/or a full video from Munich Live 1977: ruclips.net/video/U8_VGAFnN48/видео.html.
There is definitely guitar gold to be mined in the Blackmore back catalogue. Am pleased to provide other examples.

It is worth checking out Ritchie's performance with Deep Purple of the song 'Mistreated', live at the 1974 California Jam: ruclips.net/video/6xu-vCpUS_Y/видео.html

But make sure you listen to this version before listening to Rainbow’s version off of Live in Munich 1977 with Ronnie Dio on the mic because once you hear that version you’ll never listen to another version. Period.

    Omg, wrong one again, lol.
Terrible incarnation of Rainbow, And Ritchie is semi retired at this point. Been playing medieval music for the last 30 years with his wife.

Ritchie is not a solo guitarist, so best heard in a band context (although he does have some great instrumentals). This one was weird without Dio on vocals :). Pick any Rainbow or Deep Purple (with him on guitar) and you'll probably get a good representation. Gates of Babylon, Kill the king, Child in Time, Highway star, Lazy (my favorite), or if you want to go to his neoclassical side, then Vielleicht Das Nächste Mal.

    • @mndoci

He solos as well as anyone (well better than most anyone), but for me his best work is when he’s doing that as part of a band. Others may think differently.

For me, one of the things that sets Blackmore apart from most rock guitar players is that he can play very well without any other accompaniment, especially fingerstyle or acoustically.

"All good though ..." - Haha, definitely not. The aged Ritchie cannot play an longer. Sad but true, and no need to present this playing and talk about.
