You need to listen to Richie Blackmore’s guitar solo at California jam 1974. It’s mind blowing.
For me the true number 1 rock guitarist
Check Richie out at the Bilzen Jazz Fest 1969 Wring That Neck and Mandrake Root. 25 min. jam session with Ritchie doing some insane solos.
Also called Live in Belgium. It’s historic.
When Ritchie was on, no one touched him. His true genius though is in the notes that he chose not to play in his more traditional style solos. Some of his best work is in songs where he doesn't play with much speed at all.
I still reckon his solos on Mistreated and Catch the Rainbow from the On Stage album are close to his high water mark
Yes on the song Mistreated. He plays his guitar as a weeping guitar.
Live Stargazer....there's a few versions in recorded live concerts....
Yeah, he’s just messing around in this clip. I agree, Catch the Rainbow from Live on Stage is different class. Have you heard the solo on ‘Lay Down Stay Down’ on the Burn album? It’s ridiculously good.
@@gh103 i will have to check that out.
Agree with you, pal. I think you caught the essence of Ritchie’s fantastic playing. When I’m in the mood of some really good guitar soloing, I dust my On Stage album and listen to Catch the Rainbow (and I shed a tear for RJD’s mesmerizing voice) or Mistreated. Still warms up my ears and my heart, after more than 45 years of listening. What a difference in the cascades of notes I sometimes bump into, that misrepresent impeccable skills in guitar playing with soulful music and get me bored after a few minutes’ listening
The solo on Child in time from Made in Japan Is the greatest rock guitar solo ever played by anyone.

That's it....an improvised solo, a masterpiece...but he did so many fantastic things...for example you can check, for more recent stuff, Rainbow DVD '95 black masquerade...or for older ones Bilsen '69. All essential live performances...
@@ChasingAnthems it sometimes deletes links so I'll post this
ruclips.net/video/uEwVz6P7lZg/видео.html
and the search criteria next
@@ChasingAnthems Search "Child in Time - Deep Purple (Made in Japan) Original" if the link is deleted.
There is also "Deep Purple - Child In Time (Live in Denmark 1972)" and "Deep Purple - Child In Time - Live (1970)" which are videos of live performances, the latter in a TV studio where the solo is shorter and played on his Gibson ES355 as used on the original recording before he fully migrated to the strat.
Child in Time Stockholm 1970 and Long Beach 1971 and Cppenhagen 1972 are all better versions than Made In Japan imho
Richie was best when he varied between fast, and slow and melodious in the same solo.
I wouldn't take this as being representative of Ritchie Blackmore's playing. This is just random on stage fun. It made more sense if you were in the arena because there were speakers with delays in each corner of the hall so the noise echoed around in quadrophonic. Not musical, but an incredible sound. Ritchie at his best was a very disciplined and precise player, heavily influenced in his technique by country players such as Chet Atkins. He once said something along the lines of, the best guitar players in the world being in Nashville, and he was glad they mostly stayed there because they could wipe the floor with him.
Check out 1 of the live recordings of Stargazer, 16th century Greensleeves, Still im sad, a light in the black.....with Rainbow 1976 - 1977....
@@daviddoran3673 I know all those very well, but I'm not sure if it was me you wanted to tell?
Watch wring that neck live blizen jazz festival 1969, its long but worth it 😁
Not sure when or where, possibly Wembley Arena in the 80's, but he sent this kind of solo around the room from speaker bank to speaker bank. It felt like we were spinning and I swear I saw people vomiting
I completely agree with you. I’m an enormous Blackmore fan, but this was simply gibberish banging on the guitar except for maybe a few actual notes. The over the top of the neck fingering was simply thumbing away like you’d strum your fingers on a table. There is so much better guitar work available from Blackmore out there that would put this to shame. I also doubt Eddie Van Halen would watch this in admiration.
Blackmore's solos often tell a story or are conducted like a dialogue. This solo is a Space Truckin` improvisation and the song should be heard in its entirety! There are musical levels that cannot be explained with classical harmonies.
Without the opening and body of the tune this sounds like gibberish but correct it’s space truckin and he’s shredding but he’s emulating what a space ship ripping through the solar system sounds like.
I thought this was also the Space Truckin’ extended improvisation segment, it what a horrible example to play in isolation.
For more Ritchie greatness, try his live takes of You Fool No One, Deep Purple live at the California Jam 1974 or from the Live in Europe live album. Ritchie is still in my all time top 10 guitarists. Enjoy! 🎵🎸
I like Live In Europe better!
@@robiandolo Audio yes BUT the video from the California Jam is very compelling. If I just want to close my eyes, Live in Europe is the boss but I probably would have someone new to them watch the video, they will be hooked! Great jam either way that I saw a couple times myself.
Best version of YFNO on record: Live In London, Kilburn Gaumont 1974. Just dazzling in every aspect.
Ritchie is great guitarist in the world.
The best of all time hands down!
Ritchie = GENIUS
Am pleased Ritchie Blackmore is getting some love here on a YT channel - he is an absolutely fabulous guitarist and was the original shred pioneer. In fact it has been written that he was the missing link between Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.
As mentioned by other viewers, this jagged squawking solo is not necessarily representative of Ritchie's best work. Anything from the Made in Japan live album, or the track "You Fool No One" performed in 1975 (ie: pre-EVH days) from the Made in Europe album will give a better sense of what the man was capable of on stage: ruclips.net/video/Vo6uArYH8yo/видео.html The whole song is worth listening to, but if you wish to skip ahead to about 5:40 of this video, you will hear an astounding and extended display of Blackmore's guitar technique.
And there are multiple other examples of Ritchie's guitar wizardry in many other YT videos from both his Deep Purple and Rainbow years. Happy to provide other links to some of his best.
Child In Time from the Made In Japan album is a truly epic solo and as someone else as also mentioned in the comments Wring That Neck from Bilzen which can be found on RUclips.
I totally agree. That would have been a much better example than this.
This is pretty good but one of my personal favorite solos of Ritchie's is on You Fool No One from the Made in Europe album from 1976. The one from the California Jam show is almost as good.
1975
Love all Ritchie's solos on Deep P. albums but it's first time I've watched this, the guy's just Awesome but please check out (if you haven't already) his solo on "Pictures of home" Machine Head, not as wild as what I just heard but still as Awesome.
Thanks for showing this. Its 05.00 AM in the Philippines, and starting the day with Ritchie shredding away!!! Great start to the day.
Yes! That is awesome!! Rock on!
The best guitar rock an roll
Talent performs well. Genius defines the meaning of "well".
In those days all bands worth their salt had absolutely first class lead guitarists.
Deep Purple had Blackmore, The Who had Townsend, Black Sabbath had Iommi, Led Zeppelin had Page, Uriah Heep had Box, The Rolling Stones had Richards, Pink Floyd had Gilmour, Genesis had Hackett, The Spiders From Mars had Ronson, Queen had May, etc
A great time for music.
Anyone lucky enough to be in existence at that time won first prize in the musical equivalent of the national lottery.
Nobody seems to reference Ian Paice! He actually the only member who’s never been replaced!
Today I just heard Steve Morse retired from Purple.
So here’s the count: 3 lead singers, 3 guitarists, 2 keyboard players, 3 bassists, 1 drummer!
I'm guilty of neglecting Ian P myself, and for many decades, but he's truly one of the best. Listen to Fireball sometime. Astonishing playing on that one.
Tecnica, stile e velocità (di esecuzione), il chitarrista perfetto ed il più grande di tutti.
Great reaction try wring that neck late 60s early 70s you'll hear every guitar hero
saw them live in 1972 and 74
Genio!!!
Cool.😎
Dimenticavo fino a oggi suona. Il grande maestro.
I am a huge fan of Ritchie Blackmore, but this is not one that is going into my collection. "Lazy" with Deep Purple from the "Made in Japan" album will always top my list!
I’ll keep digging
Yes and he is great also in his live performance of Lazy in Copenhagen Denmark also.
Highway Star! Killer solo
Seriously out of 1000 videos of Blackmore you get this one lol. Start from Deep Purple Wring that Neck Live in Belgium 1969 full version and you will see where shredding started.
It was at the top of RUclips’s list, not sure why. Send me links!
@@ChasingAnthems you tube is a funny animal. I get some strange stuff when I do searches also.
Check out these two videos for starters. Purple always did technical brilliances mixed with chaos. I think the chaos was from the Hendrix influence. In the first one I can’t find video of any guitarist shredding and sweeping like Blackmore does and as fast. I’m sure es there was somewhere. The second concert is historic not only for the bands that played at the California Jam but the whole drama that happened between Purple, promoters, crowd size, law suites, fires and cameraman being attacked.

This is what air guitar sounds like plugged in.
Hello Travis since you don’t mind going down the free form rabbit hole you might enjoy Dwezil Zappa or his father Frank. The amount of notable musicians that worked with Frank alone is amazing.
I will check it out, thanks!
昔はまだ過激に愛用のストラトをボロボロに破壊するパフォーマンスはショッキングだったけど凄く格好良かったと思う。
He would make great sound affects for a sci-fi movie.
Richie Blackmore was a classically trained guitarist.
You played any Michael Schenker solos, etc.?
lol. what a chaotic mess! it doesnt make sense out of context. but Ritchie is one of the top players. right up there with beck or trower. such a distinctive sonic personality. he is impossibly fluid at times. a great picker. and not bad at creating monster riffs as well.
Deep Purple in it's heyday were the greatest live jam band on the planet!
I think so
If you're going to talk about Richie Blackmore's chops you got to listen to him when he's playing with John Lord probably something you didn't hear those were the chops that made me like him
Ritchie band rainbow ..gates of babylon..you won't regret it
Curious to hear what he'll say when he hears Blackmore really playing something that makes sense...
Send me a link!
I am a huge Richie Blackmore fan but I don't know whether I like this "solo". He IS a master of making music out of controlled chaos which is clearly displayed in this clip and that I guess is an art form itself. But the question is, is it GOOD? don't really know.
His tone, his articulative and authoritative feel in normal solos however are out of this world!
Check out Deep Purple - Mistreated (Live at Cal Jam 74) for actual shredding from Ritchie. He's just messing about on purpose here.
This isn't 'precision' or 'tone' it's visceral and raw. Aggressive and expolsive.
Alien sounds...
space truckin effects?
If you liked that you would loooooove my playing!!!
Heck yeah, let's see it! 😎
Guitar ala Nigel Tufnel
Ritchie Blackmore is one of my favorites , but this was not a good representation of his playing , he still ripped it , but that wasn't his best !!!
I typically pick one of the first I find, doesn’t always net the best results, but it’s raw and honest feedback.
Dude these examples are not who Blackmore truly is. No videos could be less representative of his true nature and talent. Trust me!!!
Funny how you can be bored and entertained at the same time....
🤣😂
Ian Gillian must have pissed Ritchie off again before the show.
Gillan
What was that? Was Roger stuck in traffic? I've been a fan since Made in Japan, never saw Ritchie get that weird. Did he forget how to play the guitar, he barely played any actual notes? Maybe it was "new toy syndrome" (ring modulator under foot) that made him weird out so.
CLAPTON FA L'ACCOMPAGNATORE.. PURTROPPO R. BLACKMORE NON HA MAI AUTOCAD UN BUON RAPPORTO CON I GIORNALISTI E CRITICI MUSICALI LI HA SEMPRE SNOBBATO. FORSE PER QUESTO NON HA MAI AVUTO UNA BUONA CRITICA. MA LO SANNO TUTTI CHE È IL MIGLIORE.
This is the 1985 Australian recording. Probably the worst Blackmore performance ever recorded 🤣 ... pick any solo you like from Made in Japan or On Stage albums 😎🎸
Yes it's an absolutely horrible choice. His playing and tone in the 80s was subpar in my opinion
I was a huge Blackmore fan back in the day,but when he use to do all this noodling Live,I used to find it boring and self-indulgent,and I couldn't wait for it to end!
I am a huge Blackmore fan, but this is a particularly rubbish era for him. He wasn't really that interested in the 1984 reunion, and it definitely showed. This was in the middle of Space Truckin, which often ended with a descent into madness, but the California Jam version was much better.
Some genuinely great Blackmore solos:
Live version of Mistreated- simple blues notes, but my god he wrings every bit of feeling out of them there is
ruclips.net/video/uEFChMd8-7U/видео.html
Stargazer- as close as it comes to Blackmore's signature tune, lots of harmonic minor that gives it a real Blackmore feel
ruclips.net/video/YmJIccPWnEk/видео.html
Live version of Man on the Silver Mountain. Killer riff, great solos. Great slide guitar which a lot of rock players didn't do at the time, but was a Blackmore specialty. Really nothing not to like here
ruclips.net/video/vpgu9wKJVbc/видео.html
Thats the worst ive ever seen him play hes being silly here haha -check out Child in time from made in Japan no proper footage but my favourite solo of all time - this one is 12 years later - That one was silliness
that's kind of a weird choice to evaluate ritchi -- seems like he was just having improvisational fun toward the end of a show.
I think something pissed him off during this gig
NO NO NO! this was a cool guitar rant from Ritchie, but not at all a representation of what he brought to the table in rock history! Dig deeper!!!!
Poor example of Ritchie’s genius!!
Exactly
I love Ritchie Blackmore, but not this. He is a fantastic guitar master, but I don't like when he goes off this wild. I know he likes creating new sounds and being experimental. He is too technically good and this doesn't showcase it.
Who's ritchie blackmore? Wait don't tell me! Um ??? Oh yeah! Another brick in the wall! 😂
Shut up please, This guy is just reviewing Blackmore messing Around on Stage, Is not Even a solo and there's better perfomances of him
Ritchie Blackmore is one of my favorite guitar players, especially his solos but the distortion on this sounded too crackly for me. Pretty awful sounding.
This is just a "must do" part of stage show/circus, tnis definitly does not represent Blackmore's genius, the one n only, hardly for anyone to surpass, his solos, ewch one wre always harmonic, suprising, full of unexpected notes and licks, inventive, harmonic, with him "everything is at place" ...just a reminder, find rare interwis with Hendrix who admitted that he heard some licks he used first from Blackmore...Eddie said the same about tapping - the strange thing is that Blackmore never, or vrry rarely used them
I love Blackmore but this video doesnot show his capacity to mix all style and his melody
Noodeling
What a bizarre choice to review.
I'm play guitar myself ... but this was just noise - sorry ... look at Gary Moore !
To each their own. I’ll definitely check out Gary. Thanks!
Ah Gary....empty rooms and the loner.....Stockholm 1987.....
This is probably the worst example of Ritchie Blackmore's real talent. He's top 3 on the world. This was gimmicks, not true playing. There are much better videos out their.
I love Ritchie and classic Deep Purple but that sounded like absolute crap!! practically spinal tap
Terrible choice of video. Check out Rainbow ‘Gates Of Babylon’
not impressed in the least. To me this sounds like desparately killing time with making noise. I know Richies ability to be an absolute unique player and performer. However, this recording was done in a time (battle rages on tour) when he and the band, esp. Ian Gillan couldn´t stand one another no longer and in that time he also left the band and the chapter deep Purple for good. He was very unhappy and unsatisfied in that period of his life.
This was mid-80s before the battle rages on tour
And yes it's horrible indeed
@@bartrobinson2103 yes you´re right, i looked at it again. Was it the "house of blue light" tour? anyway still sounds terrible knowing what the man is capable to do.
@@Thomas-cx6cb it's probably 84 or 85 but I'm not positive. Definitely not 93 because he changed his gear and sounded and played better at that point in my opinion.
This is the worst Blackmore video you could have chosen
Send me a link of the best
@@ChasingAnthems may I suggest anything from rainbow mid-70s or deep purple how about California Jam it's all on RUclips
@@ChasingAnthems indeed worst solo of Blackmore, all the rest is superb ! check for example gates of babylon or kill the king, all his solo s are mythique
