Ritchie is my favorite guitar player. I’ve seen him 10x in concert. I’ve never seen anybody quite like him on stage he was like a fireball. His studio work was even better. His riffs, his solos, his phrasing. He made music, not just shredding, but real music. Real songs that allowed all the meme era of the bad to shine. Truly a master of his instrument.
Hands down the greatest live improvisational rock band in history. Ian Paige is an absolute freaking monster on that 5 piece jazz kit. Classically trained Lord and Blackmore pushed each other to incredible nights of expression . simply magical!!!👍👍👍
One of the many things that separated Mark2 from everyone else was their great ability to support when they were not doing solo. They could interchange so easily without missing anything. These 5 were simply the greatest group of pure rock musicians of all-time.

The people who have been playing guitar for a long time and know how challenging it is to play really appreciate the genius of Richie Blackmore he is up there with Hendrix and Eddie Vanhalen in my opinion such a innovator the riffs he would come up with is magical.

Jon Lord was my hero as a kid, I loved Deep Purple and used to love the 'battles' that he and Richie Blackmore had, Ian Paice was a hell of a drummer too and Roger Glovers amazing bass lines were spot on, for me Deep Purple had it all, dont get me wrong, I loved Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc - but in that era, Deep Purple really shone
Ritchie Blackmore is one of those players that was always pushing the envelope of spontaneity - fishing around for that point of "tapping into the universe" - those special moments where the instruments is a direct conduit of expression, where it feels as though the music is "playing through you". Blackmore would take risks in doing so, but when he'd "tap in" you'd suddenly find yourself at the other end to the universe! He is one of those players that developed his own style of playing tone as well as signature. A fiercely intense, deeply expressive guitarist and personal no. 1 of all time!! Fab video as always!!
Terrific explanation of some of what is going on within the band. As a non musician, this is so enlightening and gives me new appreciation for what musicians are doing.
We sometimes forget the speed at which Machine Head as an album was written and recorded and how sophisticated songs like ''Lazy'' really are. These were some halcyon days for blues rock and DP slammed out an album consistently every one to two years. Live concerts gave a huge scope for improv. and fine tuning phrases and melodies. Big shout to Paicey and Glover for keeping the machine ticking over and Gillan is no slacker either. Richie and Lordy slam it as usual.
I'll take Deep Purple, you can have your Ozzy and his bands, metal outfits of all kinds, these guys were the original Big Boy rock and roll band. And every mark of the group were great in their own way.
All DP members were experienced studio musicians when the band was put together. I have yet to hear a better rock Hammond player than Lord. Thanks for another one for us older guys! A real treat.
Right on, however it was Billy Ritchie of 1-2-3 / Clouds who started the rocking back and forth movement on the Hammond organ. This sound soon caught on with prog. rock. Honestly I just found this out recently.
Blackmore is certainly a master of hard rock guitar, yet his tone is much cleaner than those that sought to emulate him. We think of this great hard sound Purple made yet Blackmore’s playing is surprisingly delicate. He does not use effects, with few exceptions. Especially early Purple, Blackmore’s tone is sweet, clean and buttery smooth. As is his playing. He is the complete player, he is a great riff writer and soloist.
Ritchie was the best. He was a hard rock guitar player yet played an extremely clean tone. When people, including myself, try to copy his songs we always dirty up the sound to make it sound hard ( and it covers up for mistakes).
Exactly right! His tone was very clean. He occasionally used a treble booster to push it over the edge but his was very clean. That is why his tone was so good and it allowed him a wide range of dynamics. When people saturate the tone with gain dynamics go out the window. Excellent point you made.
Sounds great . This was in 1972 when there was a lot of tensions in the band . They are actually smiling at each other . Just goes to show that music really brings people together . They knew they were great .
Brilliant! I saw Deep Purple first on Feb 21st, 1973 (Town Hall, Birmingham, UK). So not too long after this video was recorded. Their next album "Who Do YOu THink We Are" had just been released. I still remember that concert as one of my favorite concerts of all time. The best line up ever - Blackmore, along with Paice, Gillan, Glover and Lord. The raw sound and excitement was just so great I can't even describe it. At the end, after after three encores (I can only remember "Black Night" but I'm sure it was three), Gillan finally announced that they were "knackered" and done for the evening. Those were the days! Saw them again in 2016 but of course no Blackmore, no Paice... so not quite the same.
Always loved that tone Ritchie had back then. It's an uncomplicated, yet dynamic..right between the eyes sound ....and coupled with his inimitable staccato playing style is the definitive Strat sound for me.

To me Lazy is one of the best, most musical rock songs ever and certainly Deep Purples absolute best song. It's got a melody, not mindless repetition of the same riff over and over ad nauseum like the ridiculously over popular Smoke. It embodies the blues foundation of rock, a jazzy, rock/ classical keyboard, clean precise guitar work, it's just fabulous music and I listen to it at least once a week. The pinnacle of Deep Purple in my view. I'm used to the album version but this live bit is cool.

I've always loved deep purple, and to me their best album hands down is "who do we think we are"....now, Ritchie kinda made me pissed but laugh at the same time when he tried to critic Joe satriani, saying that Joe plays too perfect live on all his songs, just like the record. He even said that it's better to miss a note here and there because your reaching for some place you haven't been. I still love Ritchie but I been playing guitar since I was 5 and now 57, and I really think that was one of the worst comments I think I've ever heard from a well known guitarist.
@@kiplambert64 He can be a prick and is a nasty drunk. I've sat down at local bars with him on Long Island. However it's funny to see him do his own grocery shopping at the local markets. He is approachable as long as you talk to him as just a regular guy. Kiss his ass and he will walk away. I never asked him for an autograph so I guess that's why he would give me his time. I could talk music with him and ask about other band members and what they were doing. Also being a huge Deep Purple fan I would name songs that most don't know and that seemed to impress him. He would scout the local karaoke bars in search of talent for Blackmore Nights.
An example you say? Try when he was playing with Rainbow and decided to stand behind his amp for the whole show. Maybe it was his roadie body double playing because he accidentally got to drunk. Doesn't matter. Twas very uncool.

When music people talk about the great guitarist's from the golden age of rock, the names that always come up are Clapton, Page, Beck, Hendrix. While they are all legends, omitting Richie Blackmore from that list is criminal. For just soloing, I think Ritchie is better than all of them except maybe Jimi. He improvises with great soul, his technique is matched by very few, and he is great to watch live. One of the best and most over looked bands and musicians in rock history.
The ultimate jam band! Ritchie Blackmore is one of my all time fav guitarists. Sometimes reckless and nearly out of control, his unpredictability is one of the things that seperates him from many other players of his time. He takes chances and never plays things the same way twice. A VERY exciting band to see live, and great musicians all around! Got to see Purple twice with Ritchie and 5-6 times with Rainbow. Never boring!

One of my favorite DP songs, and one of the best live versions I’ve seen. Every time I watch Richie play, I’m blown away. He never disappoints. I saw him with Rainbow, when Glover was touring with them. I was just a few rows back right in front of him and the speakers. My earplugs let me down and my ears rang for a couple of days, but no regrets. Just an awesome show. Good job as always, Fil. Cheers
Ian was also the original voice of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. Hard to believe this is 45 years ago. I never tire of this kind of rock. So much musical inventiveness.
I can remember my dad playing Machine Head and my mother screaming at him to turn it down. Great child hood memories. Great artists in a great band. These guys let it all out on stage, battling, dueling and creating some of the best jams ever! Thanks, Deep Purple. Fil, great review.
Some of the best drummers of that era was raised on old school RNR .But their parents were big band fans . Bill Ward , Ginger Baker , etc . So that was some of their influence .
The whole band, in all its iterations, consisted of monsters. Yes, Ian Paice was a legendary drummer, but so was Blackmore in the guitar world, Lord in the keyboard world, Glover on bass and Gillan on the mike. Monster musicians altogether!
@Chris Manzi I wholeheartedly agree. There's a finesse to Paice's playing that Bonham simply didn't have. And he swings like a mother too, does Paice. Bonham, great though he is, is a tad overrated, I think. People out there seem to be a bit Jeremy Clarkson in their taste in drummers. You know... POWEEEER....

The early 70's was certainly a great time for rock music. I wasn't turned on to purple until a couple years later at the age of 12👍👍😎🤘 Love Deep Purple and Ritchie!
Yep always liked how RB used all the different pickup positions. When using a clean tone like that, the pickup selection more noticable than if alot of gain. I have that same amp, in stock form one of those stacks will take your head off so loud and clean. Used to have to really crank it to get any saturation (my mom could verify this, she used to hear it blasting from basement) guitar sound so dry, no reverb on those. Thr marshall stack made to play in large venues no reverb needed. The entire DP band is stellar on this
Deep Purple is a great rock band in the world. At the time the group was formed I was still a childhood, by the time this group was famous I had entered early-teen, and when I became a guitarist I began to do research on this music group. and all my music friends mention about Ritchie Blackmore. when Deep Purple came to road tour in my country, I was a little disappointed that Ritchie was not there. Where he was replaced by someone else. but I remain very proud to Ian Gillan and his other friends
Thanks. I listened to Blackmore and Purple since '79 or so. Purple was really my two older brother's era but I listened to them more than most of the new music when I was in high school ('79...'83).

Thank you for sharing this clip, which I've never seen/heard before, a live version of "Lazy" (featured on the classic lp "Machine Head"). Deep Purple has been an inspiration to rock/blues musicians and fans for a long, long time. The interaction between these great musicians is always a joy to behold. And, Phil, you're right. Ritchie's playing is unique, and even when I hear him play the simplest of licks, the sound and tone is unmistakably a "signature" one. And one of the things I'll always miss is John Lord's unique keyboard playing, where he integrates musical concepts from all ranges of genres into one unified solo where everything works toward the whole.
One of my favorite live Purple tunes. You have to love Glover. No matter how crazy things get, he manages to keep his cool. Lord's accompaniment to Blackmore is so tight, you almost don't hear when they are playing together. Add Gillan's vocals and the drive of Paice on the drums, it's simply mind-blowing. My hat off to you for being able to stop this and add comments. This is a tune I simply have to listen to all the way through. It's fun to listen to other live versions as well. It is never quite the same in each version. Blackmore and Lord are masters of improvisation and shaking things up, yet always manage to maintain their tightness. Even in the later days before Blackmore left for good. Awesome review!
nice. blackmore is one of my favorites from the era. Love his tone, his expressive vibrato, his licks. Also he isn't afraid to hold back a bit and let another instrument take the focus away from him, but then he shines right when he comes back in. plus his versatility is a great attribute. deep purple was a great band all in all. rock on.
Seen Mark2 version from the 3rd row, the keyboard player kept tipping the organ letting it crash down right on time. i had trouble hearing for a day or two. Richie was just blistering. good stuff Fil
I’m always so impressed with the way you can break down bands of my era, that I have seen, sometimes several times, and give me a whole new appreciation of their talent. Especially being a young guy who would not have seen most of these bands in their prime, yet it is obvious that you love the music of the 60’s & 70’s

I'm old enough, and lucky enough, to have seen bands like Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd and many other great ones throughout the 70's. Texas had many great rock concerts back then, and for like $5 a ticket! Still have some of the ticket stubs, wish I'd have kept them all. Got to see many of the very best several times. Keep up the videos, love "em!
I am not an "Either/Or" guy, and no matter what, I always loved Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton, Tony Iommi, Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt ("Captain Beyond"), Mark Farner, Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, John McLaughlin.... but from the first time I ever heard Ritchie Blackmore, everything was different. I dropped the needle on "Speed King" and my life was changed forever. Decades later, a married man, my son wanted to go to sleep listening to a "Blackmore's Night" CD as his lullaby.
Saw them live 4 or 5 times during those years. They had such fun and it came across. Amazing energy during their live sets. Great to see this young man able to see the level of musicianship, especially Blackmore's.
Ritchie is a master in everything. No one will ever play that way. It is very difficult technically. But what is interesting is that no one still has such a sound. So much sustain on pure sound. What accurate notes. This is beyond human ability. But even if someone succeeds in playing it technically, it is impossible to convey the beauty of music in this way.
This particular track is from the DVD live in Copenhagen 1972.Ritchies playing throughout is a master class on how to play hard rock.Having seen this line up live,the intesity is insanely powerful.I remember Ritchie playing beethoven.Unreal.
Driving and playing Deep Purple after my late shifts, no sleepiness when they were on deck.Had a 1973 Dodge Charger that passed everything but a gas station. Richie Blackmore is a beast. You hit the nail on the head with your analysis of Lazy.
Blackmore is one of the greatest ever. He was replaced in DP by Tommy Bolin, another really great guitarist. And not just anyone can fill Blackmore's shoes.
Pretty sure that these lads never ever thought their legendary jammed live work would still be watched, let alone forensically investigated some 47 years later. What any guitarist plays in a moment on stage cannot usually compare to something they've had time to prepare in the studio...unless your name is Blackmore! Especially with Made In Japan, he turned out the most amazing live performances, whilst never really playing the exact same thing two nights in a row. Genius stuff from a young lad of only 27 years in 1972.

Richie is one of my favorite players of all time. Sometimes his personality isn't charming but he is one hell of a player.

I've always loved deep purple, and to me their best album hands down is "who do we think we are"....now, Ritchie kinda made me pissed but laugh at the same time when he tried to critic Joe satriani, saying that Joe plays too perfect live on all his songs, just like the record. He even said that it's better to miss a note here and there because your reaching for some place you haven't been. I still love Ritchie but I been playing guitar since I was 5 and now 57, and I really think that was one of the worst comments I think I've ever heard from a well known guitarist.
@@kiplambert64 He can be a prick and is a nasty drunk. I've sat down at local bars with him on Long Island. However it's funny to see him do his own grocery shopping at the local markets. He is approachable as long as you talk to him as just a regular guy. Kiss his ass and he will walk away. I never asked him for an autograph so I guess that's why he would give me his time. I could talk music with him and ask about other band members and what they were doing. Also being a huge Deep Purple fan I would name songs that most don't know and that seemed to impress him. He would scout the local karaoke bars in search of talent for Blackmore Nights.

An example you say? Try when he was playing with Rainbow and decided to stand behind his amp for the whole show. Maybe it was his roadie body double playing because he accidentally got to drunk. Doesn't matter. Twas very uncool.

When music people talk about the great guitarist's from the golden age of rock, the names that always come up are Clapton, Page, Beck, Hendrix. While they are all legends, omitting Richie Blackmore from that list is criminal. For just soloing, I think Ritchie is better than all of them except maybe Jimi. He improvises with great soul, his technique is matched by very few, and he is great to watch live. One of the best and most over looked bands and musicians in rock history.

The ultimate jam band! Ritchie Blackmore is one of my all time fav guitarists. Sometimes reckless and nearly out of control, his unpredictability is one of the things that seperates him from many other players of his time. He takes chances and never plays things the same way twice. A VERY exciting band to see live, and great musicians all around! Got to see Purple twice with Ritchie and 5-6 times with Rainbow. Never boring!

No matter how fast and loud Ritchie played there was always so much feeling - like a smooth and mellow tone meandering underneath. That's why he is so special for me.

One of my favorite DP songs, and one of the best live versions I’ve seen. Every time I watch Richie play, I’m blown away. He never disappoints. I saw him with Rainbow, when Glover was touring with them. I was just a few rows back right in front of him and the speakers. My earplugs let me down and my ears rang for a couple of days, but no regrets. Just an awesome show.

Ian was also the original voice of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. Hard to believe this is 45 years ago. I never tire of this kind of rock. So much musical inventiveness.

I can remember my dad playing Machine Head and my mother screaming at him to turn it down. Great child hood memories. Great artists in a great band. These guys let it all out on stage, battling, dueling and creating some of the best jams ever! Thanks, Deep Purple. Fil, great review.

Some of the best drummers of that era was raised on old school RNR .But their parents were big band fans . Bill Ward , Ginger Baker , etc . So that was some of their influence .
The whole band, in all its iterations, consisted of monsters. Yes, Ian Paice was a legendary drummer, but so was Blackmore in the guitar world, Lord in the keyboard world, Glover on bass and Gillan on the mike. Monster musicians altogether!

@Chris Manzi I wholeheartedly agree. There's a finesse to Paice's playing that Bonham simply didn't have. And he swings like a mother too, does Paice. Bonham, great though he is, is a tad overrated, I think. People out there seem to be a bit Jeremy Clarkson in their taste in drummers. You know... POWEEEER....

The early 70's was certainly a great time for rock music. I wasn't turned on to purple until a couple years later at the age of 12👍👍😎🤘 Love Deep Purple and Ritchie!

Yep always liked how RB used all the different pickup positions. When using a clean tone like that, the pickup selection more noticable than if alot of gain. I have that same amp, in stock form one of those stacks will take your head off so loud and clean. Used to have to really crank it to get any saturation (my mom could verify this, she used to hear it blasting from basement) guitar sound so dry, no reverb on those. Thr marshall stack made to play in large venues no reverb needed. The entire DP band is stellar on this

time this group was famous I had entered early-teen, and when I became a guitarist I began to do research on
this music group. and all my music friends mention about Ritchie Blackmore. when Deep Purple came to road
tour in my country, I was a little disappointed that Ritchie was not there. Where he was replaced by someone
else. but I remain very proud to Ian Gillan and his other friends
Thanks. I listened to Blackmore and Purple since '79 or so. Purple was really my two older brother's era but I listened to them more than most of the new music when I was in high school ('79...'83).

Thank you for sharing this clip, which I've never seen/heard before, a live version of "Lazy" (featured on the classic lp "Machine Head"). Deep Purple has been an inspiration to rock/blues musicians and fans for a long, long time. The interaction between these great musicians is always a joy to behold. And, Phil, you're right. Ritchie's playing is unique, and even when I hear him play the simplest of licks, the sound and tone is unmistakably a "signature" one. And one of the things I'll always miss is John Lord's unique keyboard playing, where he integrates musical concepts from all ranges of genres into one unified solo where everything works toward the whole.
A fine guitarist and an all-around great band, brilliant writing and awesome when performing live.
One of my favorite live Purple tunes. You have to love Glover. No matter how crazy things get, he manages to keep his cool. Lord's accompaniment to Blackmore is so tight, you almost don't hear when they are playing together. Add Gillan's vocals and the drive of Paice on the drums, it's simply mind-blowing. My hat off to you for being able to stop this and add comments. This is a tune I simply have to listen to all the way through. It's fun to listen to other live versions as well. It is never quite the same in each version. Blackmore and Lord are masters of improvisation and shaking things up, yet always manage to maintain their tightness. Even in the later days before Blackmore left for good. Awesome review!

nice. blackmore is one of my favorites from the era. Love his tone, his expressive vibrato, his licks. Also he isn't afraid to hold back a bit and let another instrument take the focus away from him, but then he shines right when he comes back in. plus his versatility is a great attribute. deep purple was a great band all in all. rock on.
Seen Mark2 version from the 3rd row, the keyboard player kept tipping the organ letting it crash down right on time. i had trouble hearing for a day or two. Richie was just blistering. good stuff Fil

I'm old enough, and lucky enough, to have seen bands like Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd and many other great ones throughout the 70's. Texas had many great rock concerts back then, and for like $5 a ticket! Still have some of the ticket stubs, wish I'd have kept them all. Got to see many of the very best several times. Keep up the videos, love "em!

I am not an "Either/Or" guy, and no matter what, I always loved Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton, Tony Iommi, Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt ("Captain Beyond"), Mark Farner, Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, John McLaughlin.... but from the first time I ever heard Ritchie Blackmore, everything was different. I dropped the needle on "Speed King" and my life was changed forever. Decades later, a married man, my son wanted to go to sleep listening to a "Blackmore's Night" CD as his lullaby.
Saw them live 4 or 5 times during those years. They had such fun and it came across. Amazing energy during their live sets. Great to see this young man able to see the level of musicianship, especially Blackmore's.
Ritchie is a master in everything. No one will ever play that way. It is very difficult technically. But what is interesting is that no one still has such a sound. So much sustain on pure sound. What accurate notes. This is beyond human ability. But even if someone succeeds in playing it technically, it is impossible to convey the beauty of music in this way.

This particular track is from the DVD live in Copenhagen 1972.Ritchies playing throughout is a master class on how to play hard rock.Having seen this line up live,the intesity is insanely powerful.I remember Ritchie playing beethoven.Unreal.
Driving and playing Deep Purple after my late shifts, no sleepiness when they were on deck.Had a 1973 Dodge Charger that passed everything but a gas station. Richie Blackmore is a beast. You hit the nail on the head with your analysis of Lazy.
Blackmore is one of the greatest ever.
He was replaced in DP by Tommy Bolin, another really great guitarist.
And not just anyone can fill Blackmore's shoes.

Pretty sure that these lads never ever thought their legendary jammed live work would still be watched, let alone forensically investigated some 47 years later. What any guitarist plays in a moment on stage cannot usually compare to something they've had time to prepare in the studio...unless your name is Blackmore! Especially with Made In Japan, he turned out the most amazing live performances, whilst never really playing the exact same thing two nights in a row. Genius stuff from a young lad of only 27 years in 1972.
