I actually had a fairly pleasant encounter with Ritchie a few months before he split from Deep Purple the 1st time and formed Rainbow. We had a few minutes of conversation about his interest in classical guitar. What I've picked up over the decades, while he is a superb guitarist, he is a perfectionist and has never thought he was good enough. I also think his attitude toward others has been a cover for his own insecurities.
Greatest singer ever in my opinion. Met him in 1998 , and he was such a phenomenal person as well. Ronnie would absolutely love all the respect and recognition that he has been getting these past few years from all the new fans. He loved his fans and always treated them extremely well.
One of the most humble (as all great artists are prone to be) musicians out there, although he recognised the impact he had on both fans and other singers, he still remained honest, funny, humble, a true GIANT where it really mattered.
When you said, "ah, Dio" and put your hand over your chest, I felt tears. As a metal fan, most of my life has been dominated by my fellow musicians looking down on metal, or at least considering metal musicians as somehow lesser than "real" musicians. Seeing an opera singer of repute and talent swoon over Dio is meaningful and touching. Thank you for these videos and analysis.

You are all correct. It is awesome to see someone as formally educated musically as Elizabeth embrace metal as she has. Metal fandom is VERY tribal and there is a lot of unnecessary infighting, but one must remember that not only has musical academia looked down it's nose at metal for decades, but in the 80's and 90's metal fans were straight up vilified. Also great to see so many metal fans legitimately appreciating Elizabeth for her open mindedness.

Richie Blackmore loves odd time signatures and Medieval time signatures. His use of them in his music is the magic that he adds to any band he has ever been in. Dio much like Richie has a REAL and magical control over his voice. There is no need for any sterile digital interference here, it's all pure talent! Your comment about "paste & copy" is one of reasons why much of the music today is missing magic that music should have. It's one of the many sterile features of digital music.
Yet this song is not from the live version, but only Dio singing over his own lyrics. Like John Kay had done with the songs (which can be found on You Tube) from Steppenwolf 7, and the feedback echo is more pronounced on those videos.
That lineup of Rainbow is IMHO the greatest hard rock band ever. Daisley, Stone/Carey being total masters in their roles and Blackmore, Dio and Powell were even above that. All three influenced countless musicians on their instruments.
Daisley and Stone were good too, but Rainbow just had to have Dio and Powell in addition to Ritchie of course to be good. Without those two it would just be Ritchie with some hired guns.
@@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623 I think that's what I basically said. Daisly and Stone were great, but Dio and Powell were on the same level as Blackmore was, each in their area.

OMG! I voted this one but without any hope because it wen't 12% against 41% from Holy Diver...but you still recorded it! That's why you are the best! 🤘
Those 41% who picked Holy Diver are the kind of people who basically only heard that song ever and thinks they know Dio. Not hating Holy Diver though, it’s still a good song. The best version of Dio was the era of Rainbow. Not in Sabbath, nor as a solo artist, but Rainbow.
@@remyrickymartin I have to agree with that, i love Rainbow even though Blackmore ended up messing things up and changed the style afterwards. Still if someone likes the solo era better it's fine, but I feel like Rainbow era is very underrated so its nice it gets more attention
Dio. The greatest of them all. When he passed I cried. I knew that something so uniquely special had left us. Please keep reacting to his work. He was, and is, the very soul of music itself. In the end, there can be only one.
Fair point. The music still resonates and rocks out, all these years later. Early Rainbow (with Dio) is still relevant within the realm of hard rock/metal today. I do think that as Ritchie moved through other singers with Rainbow (R. Romero, Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner) the band became more emblematic of the times which makes it sound a bit more dated. For instance, you can tell Death Alley Driver was recorded in the ‘80s. I still love it, but it’s not as timeless as the Dio era Rainbow.
Dio was my first concert ever! My brother took me to the "Mob Rules" tour. I was 13 and I was blown away! I"ve seen him 5 times prior to his passing and he never failed to impress the hell out of me! My brother had the privilege of having lunch with him at the House of Blues in Chicago! He has always been my absolute #1 vocalist, period! I really dig the way you get captivated by the music and how you react to it. It's so cool. Thank you again for your take on all these metal songs I grew up with and still listen to! I love it! Again, thank you Elizabeth. Bradley
You've heard Dio, now check out Ian Gillan and Deep Purple, "Child in Time" for more metal history. Rainbow is Ritchie Blackmore's band, the guitarist who came up with the classic riff "smoke on the water" with Deep Purple. Both Dio and Ian sung for Balck sabbath at one point.
Child in Time is gibberish, the only reason to listen to that is to hear how high his voice can go. Other than that, it's a crap tune and not important in history of metal at all.
@@choppingpenguin Pretty sure the members of Metallica strongly DISAGREE with you. Apart from the beautiful organ and great lyrics, Blackmore's solo in the middle of the song is arguably the best lead guitar solo of all time.
Stephen Donnelly That statement almost seems like bait. Yes, Gillan does his high scream bit which could be considered a gimmick. His tone of voice however before that is beautifully sung. The rest is a masterpiece in composition and performance. One of the best guitar solos EVER. Lovely moments of interplay, tension, dissonance. Even if it is not to your taste it demands respect. Name me another song of this stature that brings so much to the table and don’t forget this was at the beginning of the seventies.
@@choppingpenguin You're right about one thing; it's not important in the history of "metal" ...because it's nothing to do with Metal....it's Classic Rock
It's like having a favorite Dio song, I just can't have a favorite hard rock singer. He's been one of my favorites since his Rainbow days. He and Bon Scott could sound like they were ripping their voice to shreds without actually doing so. "Iron Lung" fit Dio well, some of the best live performances I ever saw.
I'm going to keep recommending you do "Catch the Rainbow". That one really showcases Ronnie's clean vocals. Such power couple with softness - you'll love it.
I like “Catch the Rainbow” The live version especially. Also the “Man on the Silver Mountain” live as well. I became a Rainbow fan in the 80s when Joe Lynn Turner was the lead singer. I saw them in concert once. Richie Blackmore was awesome. Going back and finding out that the current Black Sabbath’s singer was in the band in the 70s surprised me. Then looking at their live album at the time seeing “MotSM” on the jacket and recalled hearing it a few times on the radio before then. Metal memories.
I realize as a vocal coach you're going to focus mostly on Dio's incredible voice. But Blackmore's amazing guitar work was the reason I snuck out my bedroom window as a kid so I could go to see their concert.
9:03 I actually think he does these motions with his hand because he used to play Trumpet and he uses a lot of breath techniques that he learned from trumpet playing, so for him it's like he would play trumpet but instead he sings I guess. Also I don't understand why there isn't many people requesting Rainbows live cover of Deep Purples Mistreated, literally better than the Original. The live version of Mistreated live at Munich 1977 has one of Dio's greatest singing ever it will blow your mind. AND it was live. Every Dio fan should know that performance.
And yes. About mistreated. I had that DVD back in oh idk 2006? Or 2007 16 century greensleeves is more of a must for me from that show. The intro, the song the solos and the ending "gotta save the lady, she's up in the tower. In the 16th century. Uh oh. Yeah yeah yeah. My love is gone."
I distinctly remember buying this album when it first came out. Was a huge Deep Purple fan and Blackmore was a guitar legend in my young mind but I wasn't prepared for hearing Dio for the first time.....blew me away and the Eastern influences in this song particularly stood out to me as something so much more than the typical Rock & Roll band in 1978. Entire album is a classic to me.
Man, when they told you this song would melt your face, I didn't realize they were being literal! Anyway, like Stargazer, this songs structure, soloing technique, vocal style, and lyrical imagery remain influential even today in multiple subgenres of metal. Your Dio reactions are always on point and amazing (Heaven and Hell is my favorite reaction on this channel, and Stargazer is an easy top five) so there's a lot to live up to. Don't know what to expect, but I'm pretty sure the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime! 🤘🤘

Absolutely. That song just devastated me when that album came out. I spent that summer combing the beaches of southern Cali looking for the girl with Rainbow Eyes. Such a yearning in that tag out melody. I think its a real shame Ronnie and Ritchie never reconvened for at least a moment one last time. They were as great together as Plant and Page.
@@mikereider704 They were talking about having a classic Rainbow lineup reunion in the late 90's but Cozy Powell's untimely demise ended those discussions.
Egypt is a almost hidden gem in Dio's catalog, most people are unaware of it's greatness. In fact the entire Last in Line album is kind of a sleeper to be stumbled over and blown away by it's awesomeness.
As a hard rock and heavy metal fan for so many years, I can only thank you for bringing the great vocal talents of this musical genre to your channel, masters like Dio and Dickinson. Thank you very much
Along with that.....I EXTREMELY apreciate his closing song on ALL his albums as they truly ARE EPIC; When A Woman Cries and My Eyes are some favorites. Shame On The Night is maybe his best though, I have to agree with you here.
Thank you Elisabeth for picking this one! You will not be disappointed! Another side of Ronnie James Dio is "Love is All" performed live with Deep Purple and the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Simply incredible. 🤘👍✌
I think Dio is at his best on this song from the 1977 Munich concert. Completely agree, another vocal reaction RUclipsr said this was one of the best vocal performances he had ever seen.
Mistreated is a must, but it should be done in comparison with the Deep Purple version from California Jam. Dio does indeed a great rendition of the song, but Coverdale has a lot more heart and soul for that type of song. just an opinion of course. anyway, great reaction as always
DIO's autobiography was just released. He started to write his memoirs but due to his illness he wasn't able to finish them so another writer was needed to finish the texts. Warmly recommend this book which shines light to his early career, his strong vision for making his kind of music. It also underlines how much his fans meant to him. As my recommendation for you as the next song: "The temple of the king" from the first Rainbow album.
This video is awesome. These are live Dio vocals, backed by the studio recording background. Sometimes, some bands or performers hate “pretend performing” or lip-syncing for videos, and Dio & Blackmore were among them. This is such a great companion piece to Stargazer, while not being the follow-up to that story (that would be “Light in the Black,” that’s more instrument-based), and being on a different album (“Long Live Rock and Roll” in ‘78 - their last w/ Dio). I will ALWAYS be vehemently FOR watching RJD LIVE whenever possible, because there’s a ton more to react to. Breathing technique within phrasing, real-time embouchure-work, stage presence, a real sense of POWER from the vocal while not getting extra help with mixing in the studio. Also, Dio’s improvisational work that makes live performances special for each individual audience at each show, should be seen and believed. He never needed a teleprompter - he’d just improv to cover if he “screwed up.” He’s the freakin’ best! \m/ RJD \m/
"Catch the Rainbow" Live in Munich 1977! Elizabeth will get to see Dio, Blackmore and the band do their thing live and in color. And the late-great Cozy Powell \m/.
Yeah, the vocals are live, the rest is the studio recording and Blackmore isnt even trying to play the same solo as on the album, but he usually improvise live anyway. Im a huge fan of both.
Very true !! also Iron Maiden were the first band to play live on Top of the pops in the uk as they point blank refused to mime and lip sync on "Running Free" in 1980
I absolutely love Rainbow, and I do not apologise for this possibly upsetting opinion, but Metallica's cover of Kill the King (Hardwired album) really gives the song the aggression I always thought the song needed...!
Mr. Kimble, your comment had me laughing all damn day! Been w/o power after hurricane IDA in La. & it's miserable. And your comment was just what I needed! Hilarious. Thanx.
I was live with ronnie james dio in Germany in Aschaffenburg in the colos hall right in front of the stage. I stood right in front of him and we showed each other the mano cornuta. The music system was so overpowered, I was completely deaf for 3 days and my guts were destroyed by the bass. One of my greatest concerts ever ..... RIP Ronnie
When you take into account what the song "Child in Time" is about, the death and suffering of innocents in the Vietnam War, yes indeed a deep, sad song.
Only Dio was 'live' on this performance, the music was all play back from the album. This is from a Don Kershner's Rock Concert show in 1978. Deep Purple - Child in Time live in 1970 from a Granada TV show is on RUclips. Rainbow Live in Munich 1977 and Deep Purple California Jam 1974, Mistreated from both performances. Same song, completely different feel but heavily emotional.
I think the real brilliance of this recording is that this is live off the floor, and not a groomed recording. Listen to how insanely good Ronnie's control and intonation are throughout the take. He was this consistent throughout his performing career. Just a force of nature.
I was a rock band singer , we did our own music. i wrote lyric and melody. your realisation of what goes into the formation of a lyric and intonation is such a validation of what we and others did. even though we never made a pound with our talents
Tragic, perhaps. 4 decades of classics wouldn’t constitute early. We’ve seen a lot of talent pass too early and I’m glad we got Ronnie for many many years
@@vidalpintor4524 if anybody deserved life extension technology it was Ronnie James Dio. what the fuck is Queen Elizabeth and Betty White on? should have gave him some of that shit. dude earned centuries.

Dio changed my life. Not only was he an incredible vocalist which you have broken down in such a great way only a professional like you can do but he was a super nice person. I met him three times and he was literally the nicest person I have ever met.
Finally some Pete Steele, followed by more Dio. Excellent. And wonderful that such legends continue to make new converts through their art long after their passing from this world.
The Dio videos definitely brought me to this channel. I'm a metal head female who has been listening to Dio since I was twelve years old, and still listen to this amazing man every single day. Ronnie is the best metal singer ever to walk this planet, and a fantastic frontman also! I definitely get it when you said, "I freaking LOVE DIO!!! He is now an obsession, and I want to hear so much more of his voice." I literally get goosebumps everytime I here him sing.. He is a legend, and is greatly missed. Thanks for these wonderful reactions! I look forward to seeing many more reactions from Ronnie James Dio, the one and only Metal God.
I really love these videos. I feel like my heroes are finally being treated with the respect they deserve. Ronnie James Dio has changed millions of lives with his inspiring music, and we were all kinda outcasts all along. That’s part of why his fans love him as much as we do. He was the voice of the underdog. And a world class voice at that!
Blackmore got a ton of notice when he was in Deep Purple and Rainbow.. but had a reputation of being almost impossible to work with. Dio hated his guts. As do most of the guys in Purple. In my opinion, Ritchie Blackmore is the greatest guitarist who ever lived.
@@LiveFromThePorcelainPalace Yeah, he and Dio were basically polar opposites personality-wise. Maybe that's why they worked so incredibly well together musically? Not sure. But I've read a lot of stories about Blackmore back in the 70s and 80s, he was not only angry and intolerant, but also mean-spirited. As legendary as his skills are, it puts me off him a bit. Dio I found MUCH more endearing, kind and considerate, which added to my overall opinion of him as a metal god.
You are hard crushing on Dio and love that he is your obsession. I met the man and he was the kindest human being. His vocals are beyond comprehension. His vocal power is undeniable
Thank you. I feel like RJD has finally been seen by someone (other than Blackmore and Immoi), who truly understands and, more importantly, can cogently explain (and in "real time") his gifts. Additionally, your look of awe and bemusement at 11:30 made my week, and the week has just started.

Loving the Dio reactions. I would second Don't Talk to Strangers, Children of The Sea, All The Fools Sailed Away and add Lonely Is The Word. But I'll listen to anything by Dio!
This is my Dio song to which I rock out at my gym when I lift. But the REAL reason I love this tune isn’t all Dio or Blackmore or Lord…it’s COZY on drums (yeah, I’m biased, I’m a drummer, too)…but COZY was SO good; double 26” kicks yet plays traditional grip with some matched grip as well. One helluva lead guitar part by Ritchie on this song, too…the Middle Eastern twang he displays is pure brilliance.
I absolutely love your reactions. Rainbow is a GREAT choice. Kill the King, LA Connection....Pretty much the entire Long Live Rock 'n' Roll album is amazing. It really shows the band's talent, and the amazing vocals of Ronnie. He was one of the true greats.
The first time I heard Rainbow Eyes I was on a Rainbow marathon on a company while was working. After the three first albuns with Dio and ending Rainbow Eyes, I had become sad about how could I did not knew more of him when he was alive? It was a sad goodbye feeling after three astonishing albuns that blew my mind. I heard a bit of Elf and Black Sabbath with him before, but hearing Rainbow Era one after another hit different. He was truly a Vocal Warlock.
The lead vocal in this video was performed live, but the studio backing vocal track by Ronnie is there, also. It was either inserted live via tape or added in post-production, but it’s absolutely incredible in its own right. Few humans could ever sing it like Ronnie did!
Oh yes! In the studio he was amazing, but live he was just a god!! Your recommendation here is probably one of the most accomplished masterclass performances of any vocalist ever ...
Yes, Dio's use of phrasing and inflection on words really highlight his mastery as a story-teller! That's one aspect of Dio's voice that sets him apart from being merely a singer of songs...but more as a master story-teller. Dio was quite aware of the dangers of technology and how it can corrupt the innocent....he sings many songs later that touched on that theme. You should check out a much later song called THIS IS YOUR LIFE. Still brings tears to my eyes. RIP RJD!
I think that the movement he does with his fingers is because he began to sing thanks to his breath control due to the trumpet, he began being a trumpeter and that movement looks like if he was playing that instrument. Maybe it's a custom that helped him to control his incredible and amazing voice in high notes. Pd. Dio is the best singer in the world
Thank you so much for this one! Dio for "My Choice" is always a wise choice! It was your Stargazer reaction that introduced me to this channel and it's my favorite of all of you reactions; it was superb and I expect this one to be, too!!
Catch the Rainbow (on the very first, self-titled, album by Rainbow), is one of my favorite songs ever, and while the vocals are short they are certainly sweet. It is a song that makes me feel genuine emotion and provokes ages of thought.
I love your appreciation of Dio. I was a teen in HS in 1984-88 and he was just fantastic. One of my all time faves. His vocal skills and songwriting are incredible 👏
I love this performance. I think Ronnie is the only "live" thing about it though. They also filmed a great rocking performance of LA Connection on the same day with Ronnie singing live to the backing track. For a true live Rainbow performance, I suggest Mistreated from 1977. I also really love his vocals on the Lock Up The Wolves album. I think that's the record when he finalized his vocal technique.
I would have preferred her using the studio version of Babylon tbh. His singing is more precise here (and the strings ensemble epiloge wouldn't have been cut out here)
in his documentary he explains how he played alot of trumpet as a kid and so he learned to project his voice like playing a trumpet and man.. legendary

@@WooliteMammoth Totally agree. Live versions are awesome. Also Egypt would be a great choice

Gates of Babylon is just one of the best songs ever!! It has it all….killer vocals, drums, guitars…!!! Well done!!
That lineup of Rainbow is IMHO the greatest hard rock band ever. Daisley, Stone/Carey being total masters in their roles and Blackmore, Dio and Powell were even above that. All three influenced countless musicians on their instruments.
This line ups live version of sixteenth century greensleeves is amazing.
Agree 100%, so much talent.

This track is nearing 45 years old and absolutely one of the greatest recordings of all time. Rainbow is superb!
Still amazing
Me welcome to the world
"Sign of the Southern Cross" or "All the Fools Sailed Away" are pretty epic songs lyrically with great vocal performances by Dio as well.
All the fools might be his best vocal ever recorded...
yes she need to react to both.
All the Fools Sailed Away is probably my favourite Dio song, so I say "Hell, yeah!" to that.
All the fools sail away is only matched by stargazer. Just amazing.
FADE ONNNNN
Dio was my first concert ever! My brother took me to the "Mob Rules" tour. I was 13 and I was blown away! I"ve seen him 5 times prior to his passing and he never failed to impress the hell out of me! My brother had the privilege of having lunch with him at the House of Blues in Chicago! He has always been my absolute #1 vocalist, period! I really dig the way you get captivated by the music and how you react to it. It's so cool. Thank you again for your take on all these metal songs I grew up with and still listen to! I love it!
Again, thank you Elizabeth.

@@choppingpenguin nah, I think it's a fantastic song.

You're right about one thing; it's not important in the history of "metal" ...because it's nothing to do with Metal....it's Classic Rock
Ronnie James Dio is the greatest hard rock singer ever.
Truth
You got that right
It's like having a favorite Dio song, I just can't have a favorite hard rock singer. He's been one of my favorites since his Rainbow days. He and Bon Scott could sound like they were ripping their voice to shreds without actually doing so. "Iron Lung" fit Dio well, some of the best live performances I ever saw.
Big call
Heavy metal too, along with bruce dickinson

I was lucky enough to see him sing this song with his Band Dio in 2005 at The Astoria in London. Wonderful memory.
“Don’t talk to stangers” I love Dios songs
I absolutely love your reactions. Rainbow is a GREAT choice. Kill the King, LA Connection....Pretty much the entire Long Live Rock 'n' Roll album is amazing. It really shows the band's talent, and the amazing vocals of Ronnie. He was one of the true greats.
Rainbow Eyes..on the same Album. A complete clean Vocal. Angelic Almost.
That is a beautiful song.
"Rainbow Eyes" by Rainbow, Ronnie again obviously. You will LOVE that one, please review that! :)
The lead vocal in this video was performed live, but the studio backing vocal track by Ronnie is there, also. It was either inserted live via tape or added in post-production, but it’s absolutely incredible in its own right. Few humans could ever sing it like Ronnie did!
Well noticed buddy ...
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@andreavelinodacosta1418 - Thanks, I’ve been a Dio fan since 1975.
There's a live performance of "Catch the Rainbow", live in Munich 1977. I believe it would be great for a reaction video.
Edit: correcting a typo
Oh yes! In the studio he was amazing, but live he was just a god!! Your recommendation here is probably one of the most accomplished masterclass performances of any vocalist ever ...
agree
I agree, along with "Still I'm Sad" from the same concert.
Me 83' - 87' 😁
Remember..Ronnie is LIVE here. That is him ..all him...perfection, effortless and flawless!!
His singing is more precise here (and the strings ensemble epiloge wouldn't have been cut out here)
in his documentary he explains how he played alot of trumpet as a kid and so he learned to project his voice like playing a trumpet and man.. legendary
The way Elizabeth gets so giddy for everything Dio does is just so wholesome.
this is called OVERREACTING.
@@DPDDD3 wow youre misreable dude
Its the same amount of emotion I get, when hearing and seeing Dio, it makes it even more aware and intense: wonderful
