I think Star Gazer, is the story of the fall of Babylon. And I heard the 🤘🏻🤘🏻 got started, because Ronnie James Dio's mother did it at one of his early gigs and it means poking the eyes of the devil in Italian.
Dio is not only one of THE greatest vocalists in Metal history, he was also a class act as well who truly appreciated his fans. Back in 1995 I saw him, with his own band Dio, at a small club on Long Island. At the end he came to the edge, stage right, to shake hands with the audience. I'm only 5''-5" so I had to literally climb over people to try and shake his hand but was out of reach. He saw this and pointed to me and flashed me the "Horns" in recognition of my efforts. At the end of the night, after the club closed down, I was walking to my friend's car when I heard this shout "Hey kid!" I turned and it was RJD waving me and my friend over to him. He invited us to hang out on the bus where we drank wine and talked about the show and music in general. It was an experience I'll never forget. Fast forward to 2000 and I saw Dio at Irving Plaza in NYC for the Magica Tour. After the show We see him out on the streets signing autographs and he sees me and my friend who was with me back in '95. He calls out to us by our names which stunned me 'cause it was 5 years since we met but he told me that he remembers the names of every fan that he has met and my jaw just dropped. When Ronnie James Dio passed in 2010 the Metal world lost a champion for the common fan. RIP my friend, you are sorely missed.
Awesome story and being at several festivals around the time of his passing I can tell you that he was definitely like that with everyone he interacted with. There was not a single act that didn't have a great Dio story and every single person had admiration and respect for the man. When you have your entire profession literally singing tributes to you you know you've lived a righteous life.
Ronnie James Dio is the SOLE REASON my band got a contract...he was not only an iconic, talented singer, but an amazing, compassionate, kind person. He was a true legend, and I am very proud to have met and known him
Through conversation, he asked if we had a demo (we talked a WHILE), and where was it recorded etc. I had one in the car of course, and he actually walked out with me, took our demo package...time goes by, and our management gets a call, set up a showcase and meeting etc etc...turns out RJD had passed it up through some channels with his blessing, and ended up on an A&R guy's desk (not even RJD's label!!!!), with a note attached... He was by far the most genuine, wonderfully caring and kind man, let alone musician...a true one-of-a-kind...I was very blessed to have met him and spent that couple of hours with him. Changed my life for sure
Best story i heard about dio he was doing a gig with Halestorm and he was being mobbed by fans and lizzy asks him how he deals with it he said its only a moment out of your day but its a moment they will never forget. What a gent
I love that he seem to have understood so well how fans feel. Many artists don't seem or they just don't care or think the fansare not worthy them. To Ronnie the fans were all equal.
I met RJD in 2000 at the NAMM show in LA. He was at the Dean Markley booth with his band. He was hands down the nicest rock star I ever met. I introduced myself and said "Ronnie, for me this is like a catholic getting to meet the pope". He told me that was the nicest thing anyone had said to him in a long time. He signed a picture and took a picture with me. RIP RJD, we love you.
That's something I've heard from pretty much everyone I know ever met him. That man was normal and nice to a level of it feeling weird in the world he was part of.
Because he knew he was only a man. You should be careful of people that think they will never die. Those people have a power complex. Dio was amazing, both as a singer and a human being.
I had tix to a Scorpions / Cinderella concert. Scorpions had to cancel because of Klaus throat problems. Refunds were given. Instead of taking the night off Cinderella played a free show. I thought that was pretty cool too. Great show too.
His biggest advice to bands was that when they met fans it would be something that the fan would remember. So always make it a good memory because the fans are the reason they make music. I also had the chance to meet him and he was kind and fun and smart. I will always remember those times.
Same, twice with Sabbath one or two times with his band (festival memories are hazy). But I'm a 90s kid, so they were already quite old but still amazing. To see Rainbow would have been incredible. One of the bands where the studio version is disappointing if you hear a live recording first. Some of those impros between Ritchie and the keys or Dio.
Fun Fact: Ronnie James Dio was never a trained singer. When he was younger, he played trumpet and throughout his singing career, he used breath control techniques he learned as a trumpet player.
@@davidmac3290 Hahah! I think the techniques he picked up helped him sing with his already incredible voice. Eric Adams from Manowar did the same thing, afaik he's only ever had training on his breathing rather than actual singing lessons.
I just read his autobiography. He became the lead singer out of necessity in the Electric Elves since the other singer/players left the band. When they became just Elf he knew then he had power in his voice. Hope I didn't spoil it too much. Get the book!!
It really is just tragic irony that such a loud, incredible, pure vocalist like Dio ended up dying of stomach cancer. But even after his diagnosis, he kept performing and his singing sounded unaffected. It must have been painful for him to do, but he really loved his craft that much. RIP to such an incredible person.
Us metalheads call him by his full name due to the enormous amount of respect he has in the community. He was also a great person, humble, encouraging, kind and generous.
Also, just "Dio" is more recognizable than "Ronnie". His last name is less common than his first name. If you want to identify other singers with a single word, it would be Halford or Dickinson rather than Rob or Bruce. It might be the other way round with Floor Jansen, I understand that Jansen is a quite common last name.
I don't know, as a singer, Freddy was amazing. But Freddy was a douche and horrible person, not to mention a sick perverted freak. DIO was a great singer, and a great person.
Best singer is just impossible to tell. There are so many just as good as him in other genres, from rock and metal to opera and pop (Chris Cornell, Pavarotti, Mercury,...). Same for frontman: I personnally find Bruce Dickinson a better frontman, for example. But yeah, Dio's a beast.
The devil horns comes from his grandmother who lived in Italy. Ronnie James Dio is Italian. His grandmother used to do that to him as a child to ward off the evil spirits. so he Incorporated it into his live shows and it caught on as a Universal symbol for heavy metal
I believe there was 2 things to it as well. The horns up at someone was to ward off evil and pointing the horns at someone was basically "cursing" them, no?
@@TheLawnStripes your answer to the first question yes answer to the second question not sure, I know his grandmother would do that to him to ward off evil spirits I'm not so sure she would be cursing him, although he could have been a bad little boy LOL!
Didn't it have something to do with fending off the "Evil Eye". I read somewhere it was called that and his grams pulled the sign to random people who looked at her the wrong way. Ronnie started using it because he thought he had to have a a hand sign too, since Ozzy used the victory sign.
@@Raipela yeah, pretty much what was posted up a little above my comment. An interview with dio said it was an Italian superstition. He'd be walking with his grandmother and she'd give people the horns that were giving them the evil eye. Said it was called the Malik (ma-loik is he he pronounced it)
Not saying Dio's grandmother didn't do it but in the context of rock/metal music Geezer Butler actually did it first, there is a photo of the band from 1969 with him doing it and another from 1971, 10 years before RJD joined Sabbath, and Dio never did it with Elf or Rainbow, only once he joined Sabbath, seems too much of a coincidence to me. I believe Geezer got it from Alistair Crowley the occultist. Dio certainly popularised it though, it wouldn't be the same iconic rock symbol without him
In his autobiography, Geezer said Ronnie asked if he could do Geezer’s finger thing because he didn’t feel comfortable doing the clapping thing Ozzy would do when performing.
I met Dio backstage once. When he signed my t-shirt, I asked him if he could sign with his favorite verse from one of his songs. He signed with the first letter of each word: T W I F O K A Q W B Y E A S Y D I H A H. Amazing singer and songwriter. RIP RJD. We miss you.
I saw him live in July 2009. He was 67 years old and dying of stomach cancer, and he had the voice of a titan from the opening song to the final note. Dio is the godfather and power metal, and a legend! \m/ \m/
@@ronnienose8608 hell yeah. As much as I love Ozzy, and it’s a lot, Dio is by far untouched vocally speaking imo. He just had it when he sang it was a like beautiful literature. Not just a song. He told beautiful narratives, even like that way she addressed that he can make things like “yeayeahhh” and “ohhh” sound so soulful and meaningful.
@@Helluvabutl3r I remember reading this satire article about an Ozzy and Black Sabbath reunion where they all pretended the Dio years didn't exist as Ozzy wouldn't have been able to sing any of the Dio songs live, heh.
I met Ronnie James Dio backstage at a show in my hometown after a show. He barely came to my chest in his platform shoes. My friend asked him to autograph a T-shirt. He initially refused because HE DIDN'T WANT TO RUIN THE SHIRT. That's how humble he was. I could tell by the look on your face that you were blown away in the first 30 seconds of hearing his legendary delivery. Truly delightful to see Dio's continued impact on new generations. He is indeed in the league of the immortal Freddie Mercury as you correctly stated. Respect.
One of the greatest metal vocalists you will ever hear. His voice is so distinctive, powerful, and pure. According to RJD, he never had vocal lessons. He felt it was better to have an untrained voice to maintain his individuality. I have seen him live many times and he was always perfect. He started singing professionally in a doo-wop band called Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. You can find a song called will you still love me tomorrow on youtube. He also sang for a rock band called Elf and then joined Rainbow. As much as I loved his vocals with Black Sabbath, I prefer his vocals with Rainbow. Either way, you will never go wrong with RJD. I look forward to your reaction.
I read a long time ago Dio learned his breath technique way back when used to play the trumpet when he was younger. But still, this shows how taleneted he was!
@@thepeladeauprojectband8943 takelessons.com/blog/classically-trained-singers-z02 " Contrary to popular belief, metal singer extraordinaire Ronnie James Dio did NOT take vocal lessons, but he did say he was greatly influenced by the singing style of tenor and great singer Mario Lanza!" takelessons.com/blog/rock-singing-technique-z02 "Frontman Dio never actually had any formal vocal training. However, he did study as an instrumentalist, and has claimed that his time as a trumpet player gave him excellent breath technique. Not only that, but he loved to listen to opera from an early age."
And I quote the man himself "I've never taken vocal lessons. My early trumpet training and a fortunate talent for singing has always been enough for me. In the case of rock singing, I've always felt it was better to remain a bit untrained to maintain your individuality" Ronnie James Dio.
We refer to him as Dio or Ronnie James Dio instead of just Ronnie because the man is a god and a legend. The rest of us are just mere mortals blessed by and grateful for his music.
I love your reaction to this. I went to watch your reaction to The Man On the Silver Mountain, and I can't believe that you haven't reacted to that song. It's probably the song that introduced Dio to the world. A definite must hear for any Dio fan.
Elizabeth is like a breath of fresh air bringing new life into one of the greatest songs and story telling of all time and the introduction of dio to a new audience. May you all be and feel as blessed as we all did when we experienced these gods in the 80s
I have to regret the first time I saw black sabbath played with dio at the Los Angeles coliseum on the heaven and hell tour even though I loved the album, I went there to display my anger at the band for giving up on Ozzy. To this day the album has to be their top 5 all time
Thanks for taking the time and choosing this - kinda longish - version. There are a couple of others, shorter ones on YT with the Dio band, all of which have cut off the ending.
I have been wondering why these reaction videos are so appaling and it hit me hard. You know those evenings with your good friends or family. You hang out and you try subtlety put some your most loved tracks/artists on and hope that your company finds the greatness that resonates with you. But always they are like "meh" as you are waiting with grin on your face for their responce. You cant connect between you and your loved ones through the music you hold dear so much. But with Elizabeth, it feels like you are with her, just hanging around listening to your favourite tracks and she notices all the perfect little things and more that makes you play those tracks and performances over and over again. Elizabeth makes you feel like she is your best friend for the night. So cozy, so warming, perfect anti-depressant and relaxant for busy daily life. Ty Elizabeth. Very much!
Totally! There are tons of reaction channels out there where they simply love whatever is they are watching but it feels a bit cheap. Like a friend who would just like everything you showed him to make you feel good. But when the reactor actually notices little things and honestly seems to enjoy discovering your favorite band is a priceless feeling. You nailed it, that's what makes some reactions so special. You feel some weird validation for having liked those artists, someone really gets it!
Very much on point, but sometimes it's something else as well. The more knowledgeable reactors can point out things you may not even have (consciously) noted even after hearing your favourite songs many times. And that can add to your understanding as to WHY you like some things so much.
I'd love to hang out with her, its great seeing someone with her background appreciate metal. She truly loves music, not just one genre but any gerne as long as its done well. She disects the song word by word and note by note but also absorbs the entire performance. Its a shame todays youth will never be able to experience shows like these. Tens of thousands of people, no reserved seating, walls of speakers pushed by 50,000+ watts, thousands of lights, pyrotehnics and the energy of thousands getting into the music. I get amped up just remembering concerts like that. Haha, I feel like Grandpa saying, "Yeah sonny, back in my day...." but its true, it was the greatest decade to be a part of.
I love how you are totally IN with your enthusiasm when doing your reaction/analysis videos wherein ye keep an open mind and ears and appreciate what you're listening to ...even if it isn't exactly your type of music genre! May you forever keep that childlike enthusiasm and appreciation in music! 🤘😁🤙
I knew Ronnie. He was the nicest guy on the planet. And this was a wonderful analysis and tribute. Ronnie loved his music and his fans and they knew it. Thank you!
From the same era Geoff Tate formerly of Queensryche as well as the frontman from Manowar I forget his name I think it's Eric were one of the few who could rival Dio singing voice
@@chrisumana7644 can’t really compare Manowar and Queensryche to Dio. Totally different styles. Dio sang with raw controlled power...those other bands were melodic.
When I was a kid, based on his voice, I thought Dio was a giant! Years later I saw this little thin dude with that epic voice and it blew my mind! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
I love that Elizabeth is a vocal trainer, and really is new to a lot of great rock tunes and artists, knows vocals in a sense most rock fans cannot appreciate. She is delightful, fresh, and I really enjoyed her analysis.
Dio never wasted a note. He had a reputation as being one of the nicest guys in rock. Always respected his fans and had time to sign an autograph. Very sad he left us. Cancer sucks!
Your sense of joy whilst watching Ronnie's performance had me smiling from ear to ear. I'm happy you enjoyed what many of us have loved for years. He was dearly loved by his fans, and is dearly missed. RIP RJD.
@musical roses He was still as amazing as ever too, I never would have thought just two years later he would be gone. He may have been 66 but he had more energy and endurance than most 20 year olds. F Cancer.
I did two tours with Dio back in 87 and 89. He sounded absolutely great every night. Not only a professional on and off stage but a truly kind man. Those tours were some of the best times I can remember. When he passed away rock and metal lost a true legend.
I met Ronnie several times and yes, he and Lemmy were both the nicest people you would ever want to meet. He loved talking vocal technique too. "Always sing from your balls" he told me. Kind of ironic that both he and Lemmy's graves face each other at Forrest Lawn
I have many stories, the first tour I ever did was in 1987 on the “Dream Evil” tour with Dio. I was 17 and at the time it was like a dream, no pun intended. I ran lasers for the show’s. Megadeath was the opening act, so for a few months I had the pleasure of watching him perform 5 nights a week and I don’t think he ever sounded off at all. On nights off the Crew would go out and a lot of the time the band would join us. I spent many nights drinking with Ronnie and picking his brain, the man was incredibly kind and had the insane ability of remembering everyone’s names years later. I would run into him from time to time and he always had a smile and would always make the first contact if he saw anyone he knew. I do have a ton of stories that I could tell, but it would just take up more time than anyone needs to sit through. Still the best time I had in any tour and he is greatly missed. RIP to the master RJD!
@@nomidubidabi haha, the stories are best told over drinks. I will say the first time I met him was pretty insane. The tour had been going on for a few months and I was there to replace the operator. I was 17 but everyone kept telling me to say I was 21. So that night I watched the show and saw what the cues were, as well as the set up, etc. After the show during the load-out the tour manager came out to say that Ronnie wanted to talk to me. Keep in mind I was a huge fan of him before this ever came up so I was nervous as hell. I was taken to the dressing room and the whole band was sitting there, Ronnie offered me a Heineken, handed it to me and the bottle opener I had would not open the damn beer. After fighting with it for a while Dio grabbed it from my hand and threw the opener aside grabbed another and opened it for me. I know he saw how nervous I was and handed me the beer back saying that everyone had a problem with that bottle opener. After that I sat on a couch next to him and we talked for about an hour, smoked a joint, and he did everything he could to make me feel welcome. I play bass and he played bass back in Elf and some other bands so we talked about that among many other things. He told me how young I looked for being 21 to which I just had to laugh. By this point Jimmy Bain was passed out wasted on another couch and Vinny was passing another joint. I can't stress enough how kind he was, how much he cared about everything and everybody, and the insane ability of performing at that level night after night.. This is the tame story of the day I met Ronnie James Dio, maybe later I will talk about the times he got me laid.. .hahaha Cheers...
Congratulations people. We converted another one into a Metalhead! Please collect your commemorative black t-shirt, chains and leather boots at the next Metal festival :D
Dio said once in an interview he purposely tried to make the live version different from the studio because "you would just listen to the studio version instead". amazing performer
I love how so many of these professional singers, voice coaches, & composers as well of rap/hip hop fans are so drawn to classic metal like Iron Maiden & Sabbath. I love seeing the curtains drop from their eyes as they see the talent & intricacy of some of these amazing bands. Many of us learned this as kids back in the day, and grew up knowing how amazing the singing, musical talent & songwriting of some of the most overlooked bands.
So true mon ami and contemporary. Poor unenlightened inexperienced people that spent decades in ignorance of what we immersed ourselves in for most of our lives
Larry you are so right and then the record companies tried to kill metal with glam rock then grunge. They failed. To quote the OZ " you can't kill rock n roll it's here to stay". It pains me to say this but the metal band of the 80's like priest I have found in the "oldies "sections at various places. I see Priest touring retirement homes in the next 20 years!!!
@@zachwalraven no I'm sorry that was zeppelin Hendrix and if you take stoner more down the psychedelic pathway then the Doors (doors of perception) thats what the name meant, were right there as well. Sabbath also started as a blues band before they changed there name to black Sabbath.
My dad introduced me to rock music. I remember being in the car with him and him driving me somewhere, and he would put on rock music. This song especially is one of the regular ones. My dad is a huge fan of Dio. I can say I'm a fan too. I have such vivid memories of us singing this song in the car. It's one of the few moments where my dad and I connect. Anyways, I love this song. It's pretty special to me.
The guy playing the guitar (Tony Iommi) damaged his fingers at a factory, so he devised melted bottle caps for his fingertips to let him play the guitar again. This is when heavy metal was born.
Dio's said the horns he throws up originated from his Grand-mother, who was religious and superstitious, and would point her fingers at him like that because they were the "devils eyes", to signify he was being watched when he was doing something naughty. He evolved it from then and now that hand gesture will live on forever
I'd also heard he used it as Ozzy would always give the peace sign on stage and when he took over from him he wanted to do something but not copy Ozzy.
@@slamindorf5478 , you remembered it well young grasshopper! As far as I'm concerned, you snatched the pebble from my hand! The pupil is now the master! Go in peace Slamindorf, and conquer all who oppose you.
Dive into DIO through Holy diver, Rainbow in the dark, Don't talk to strangers, Last in line, Sacred Heart, Rock n roll children, hungry for heaven, naked in the rain and all the fools sailed away.
Glad to see this, I came to the comment to post it. It's a protection symbol, people forget that a lot of early metal artists were superstitious and if you're going to sing about evil you ought to give yourself some protection.
Gene Simmons also claims to have invented that hand symbol. Gene Simmons is also a notorious egotist though, so I'm more inclined to believe Dio (whose reputation is that of a seriously generous and grateful dude).
Dio, a physically small man, but damn he's a giant if there ever was one. legendary and pioneering in a musical genere that spawned about a thousand subgeneres.
He understood the power stance that allows you to use the strength in your legs to open the chest/back help project the voice. Bruce Dickinson dose the stance a lot too.
I think if you want to really fully appreciate his vocal abilities, children of the sea is an amazing song. Looking forward to more Dio now that you're also a fan :)
I am so very impressed with her ability to deconstruct this performance. It was interesting to hear her give a name to things I had noticed, but was not able to articulate.
This woman is having the Eargasm of her adult life she is finding out what we all known for years. RONNIE will live forever. He was very special and the best.
"They'll tell you black is really white, the moon is just the sun at night and when you walk golden halls, you get to keep the gold that falls..." f'n genius. \m/
I've been listening to Ronnie since I was 12 yesterday. old. I'm now 52. His singing never gets old and in some strange amazing way I only appreciate Ronnie more and more with time. Bottom line.... Ronnie is and always will be the greatest ever. Period. R.i.p. Ronnie, we miss you so Brother.
Never understood the concept of popcorn, must be something really "murican" that I as real Dutch cheesehead can't understand. It allways reminds me of styrofoam.
Your hair is incredible, your review of “Heaven and Hell” is fun and on point. I love watching your reactions to metal, almost like a foreigner discovering a whole new amazing country or world. You have quickly become my favorite reactor to music. Keep up the awesome work.
I got to see Dio 6 times. He owned the stage when he was there. He would walk out, grab the audience by the balls and say "I'll give these back when I'm done".
This is crazy, I've seen my gradma and other elders doing it many times in my life, and I've never actually thought that's where Dio got it in the first time. Next time I see my grandma I'll thank her for keeping on the beliefs that originated the most iconic rock gesture ever :'D
I heard him reference the horns as the malosek “I know it’s probably spelled different” his grandmother was from Romania and it was not only meant to ward off evil spirits but to also curse you for being bad or evil.
We call him Ronnie James Dio or just Dio because Dio means "God" and out of respect we either refer to him by his full name or simply "God", since he is one of the greatest metal singers of all time and pioneered the genre.
Isn't it amazing how Ronnie, even though he was only 5'4" tall, could command the entire stage so powerfully and project so much character out to the large audience? True showmanship.
His voice was so amazing. I’m always so amazed doesn’t matter how often I am listening to him. In Poland since few years we have a great Dio Memorial concert with so many polish artists and it’s really amazing. This energy is absolute unique.
As a huge fan since the 80´s its great to hear about the Dio memorial concert, he really was amazing and deserves to be celebrated as the Metal God he is.
Finally, the world will remember Ronnie again (us fans have never forgot). I like this version but favor his own Dio performance. Please take a moment just to watch it on your own, it'll show you some of his true personality as a performer. His voice is awesome but that's only half the story!
I saw Black Sabbath with Dio in May of 1981 during the Heaven And Hell Tour. Dio had everyone in the LA Coliseum in the palm of his hand and rocked our world. Greatest singer / performer ever.

@@debwoods6011 I would have love to see Randy Rhodes, my ultimate favorite guitarist and inspiration. I saw the Dio and Dokken tour back in the 80s. It was funny, I clicked on a Heaven and Hell recording, and accidentally clicked this link. At first I thought, what the heck and kept watching as I thought the lady with red hair, Elizabeth Zharoff, would start singing, but was intrigued when she started critiquing the song. Actually brought a year to my eye to see someone appreciating the lyrics.
What nobody ever mentions is, that Ronnie was capable of doing somthing almost impossible. He was able to growl in his higher, even very high chest voice. It is actually a kind of a Dio trade mark. Usually growling mostley just works in lower range of your voice.

REQUEST: would like to see you analyze "Die Young" from Heaven and Hell, by: Black Sabbath. This is one of my very favorite Dio songs. The perfect song to open a concert with. I remember the moment I put the needle down on Black Sabbath's new album, "Heaven and Hell". I heard some weird swirly noises from a keyboard. I'm thinking hmmm... Certainly not a sound I would associate with Black Sabbath. Then the guitar comes in. Alright, this is cool. Then Dio..."Ooh, gather the wind, though the wind won't help you fly at all, Your back's to the wall" OMG... Die Young is, to this day, still one of my favourite songs. Ronnie James Dio is, and always will be, one of the finest vocalists ever to grace the genre of Metal music. RIP Ronnie.
Dio grew up listening to and idolizing opera singers like Mario Lanza so your on the right track. Was also a trumpet player, that's how he perfected his breath control.
The funny thing is, his voice only ever got stronger with age, and the reason we either call him Dio or Ronnie James Dio, is because he's a fuggin LEGEND. Long live Ronnie James Dio!!! \m/

Ronnie James Dio is the SOLE REASON my band got a contract...he was not only an iconic, talented singer, but an amazing, compassionate, kind person. He was a true legend, and I am very proud to have met and known him
Yes to you!!
RIP Ronnie

That is such a cool story of who, what, & why RJD is so beloved by so many people.
Dio was an absolute gentleman

I met RJD in 2000 at the NAMM show in LA. He was at the Dean Markley booth with his band. He was hands down the nicest rock star I ever met. I introduced myself and said "Ronnie, for me this is like a catholic getting to meet the pope". He told me that was the nicest thing anyone had said to him in a long time. He signed a picture and took a picture with me. RIP RJD, we love you.
That's something I've heard from pretty much everyone I know ever met him. That man was normal and nice to a level of it feeling weird in the world he was part of.
Awesome story man!!!!
I saw dio with rainbow, sabbath and solo twice. My favorite singer ever. Rip Ronnie
You were blessed my guy.
I would have loved to see him live!
Amen my brother
Lets all keep playi g these songs....I have younger guys I teach music to appreciate our times
Fun Fact: Ronnie James Dio was never a trained singer. When he was younger, he played trumpet and throughout his singing career, he used breath control techniques he learned as a trumpet player.
Fake news! I played trumpet and I can't sing for shit ;)

True, and as Dio means god, that suffices too🤘

The devil horns comes from his grandmother who lived in Italy. Ronnie James Dio is Italian. His grandmother used to do that to him as a child to ward off the evil spirits. so he Incorporated it into his live shows and it caught on as a Universal symbol for heavy metal
It was called the "Malik" (ma-ēēk). However the hand gesture predates Ronnie's grandmother by many MANY years.

Yes it’s an Italian thing called the molocca, you can give someone the evil eye or ward off the evil eye
@@hvitekristesdod i saw it called maloccio but italy has many dialects.
Called it a "Loyic" 🤘😊

I was so sad when I heard Dio passed away. Dude was epic. Makes me happy to hear an expert talking about his abilities.
One sign of the "greats" is finding their own way.
The other sign is recognizing what came before them.

However, he did study as an instrumentalist, and has claimed that his time as a trumpet player gave him excellent breath technique. Not only that, but he loved to listen to opera from an early age."

Ronnie James Dio.
We refer to him as Dio or Ronnie James Dio instead of just Ronnie because the man is a god and a legend. The rest of us are just mere mortals blessed by and grateful for his music.
In line with this, "Dio" is the Italian word for God.
It just rolls off the tongue really.

Thanks for taking the time and choosing this - kinda longish - version. There are a couple of others, shorter ones on YT with the Dio band, all of which have cut off the ending.

Very much!
I love this comment. It made me say "yeah, that's it!"
That is a great way of explaining it!

Glad to see this, I came to the comment to post it. It's a protection symbol, people forget that a lot of early metal artists were superstitious and if you're going to sing about evil you ought to give yourself some protection.
Both to protect the other person, and to ward off the other person, all depending on the intention! 👹
Gene Simmons also claims to have invented that hand symbol. Gene Simmons is also a notorious egotist though, so I'm more inclined to believe Dio (whose reputation is that of a seriously generous and grateful dude).

Fellow Charismaniacs we have done it. We have turned Elizabeth in to a metal head level one. Well done everyone well done.
Now to powerlevel her...
My number 1 voice choice since I was 12 years old . Now heading to 51and never fail to be astounded by this legend .
What a great recording! Dio was really feeling that night clearly, he sounded amazing.
RIP Dio
When she mentioned longevity, it hit me in the feels
This woman is having the Eargasm of her adult life she is finding out what we all known for years. RONNIE will live forever. He was very special and the best.
The Man will live on in all of us who loved him so much
"They'll tell you black is really white, the moon is just the sun at night and when you walk golden halls, you get to keep the gold that falls..." f'n genius. \m/
I've been listening to Ronnie since I was 12 yesterday. old. I'm now 52. His singing never gets old and in some strange amazing way I only appreciate Ronnie more and more with time. Bottom line.... Ronnie is and always will be the greatest ever. Period. R.i.p. Ronnie, we miss you so Brother.
this song was written by black sabbath before dio joined. he did it justice like no one could
“The world is full of Kings and Queens, who blind your eyes and steal your dreams. It’s heaven and hell.” So true.
@@dalemartinez3382 Didn't know that. Can't imagine Ozzy singing it, truly a Dio sonmg.
So… what does that even mean?
This is so fun to see Elizabeth hearing Dio for the first time, nowadays she is such a fan of him o/
"This will be my first time hearing Dio.". . . . .Me- *Pulls up a chair with some popcorn*
😂😮😎
dont be too excited.
ahahah 100% True
I puckered up also.
Never understood the concept of popcorn, must be something really "murican" that I as real Dutch cheesehead can't understand.
It allways reminds me of styrofoam.
Love this lady's style How she expresses herself
Dio’s Vocals on the album Rainbow Rising, song, Stargazer, best ever. Guaranteed.
100%
Agree! If Elizabeth is going to react to another Dio vocal, it has to be Stargazer!
@@craigfraser2204 Think the problem there would be I dont think there is much if any of Stargazer out there.
Your hair is incredible, your review of “Heaven and Hell” is fun and on point. I love watching your reactions to metal, almost like a foreigner discovering a whole new amazing country or world. You have quickly become my favorite reactor to music. Keep up the awesome work.
It's gotta be "Rainbow in the Dark"
so perfectly written...
Yes! Someone else repping Rainbow in the Dark! Lets see it!

RAINBOW IN THE DARK REACTION!
I got to see Dio 6 times. He owned the stage when he was there. He would walk out, grab the audience by the balls and say "I'll give these back when I'm done".
Twice for me. Amazing
I saw him live once with Sabbath. I confirm - that's pretty much what happened.
I had a wife like that once.
@@jeffsmith8849 An amazing voice? ;-)
"The Horns" the maloik protection form the evil eye in Italian folklore. His grandmother taught it to him.
This is crazy, I've seen my gradma and other elders doing it many times in my life, and I've never actually thought that's where Dio got it in the first time. Next time I see my grandma I'll thank her for keeping on the beliefs that originated the most iconic rock gesture ever :'D
I did not Know that😲😂 seriously thanks 👍🏽🇺🇸
All things are from God. It's just up to the individual to use it for good.
My God can do anything, so everything is possible!
Satanic brotherhood sign
I heard him reference the horns as the malosek “I know it’s probably spelled different” his grandmother was from Romania and it was not only meant to ward off evil spirits but to also curse you for being bad or evil.
Knowing Dio the way I do, I can only say that when he sang on stage the stage was his whole world.
We call him Ronnie James Dio or just Dio because Dio means "God" and out of respect we either refer to him by his full name or simply "God", since he is one of the greatest metal singers of all time and pioneered the genre.
Dio is "The" Iconic voice of Metal!!
Dio is the God of Metal.
That, and "Dio" was the name of one of his bands.
I call him Ronnie James. :)
Different spelling. Deo v Dio. Wow.
His voice is like if Al Pacino became a metal singer.
Every time he tried to quit Black Sabbath, they pulled him back in!
hehehe...true story :P
HOOOO-AHH
"The world is full of kings, who'll blind your eyes then steal your dreams...It's Heaven and Hell"
The lyrics in this song are ridiculous. To call him a musical genius is a huge understatement.

@@onizgr77 Not a problem at all. Hope your day gets better.
Dio said playing the trumpet gave him great breath control which obviously contributed to his vocals.
Isn't it amazing how Ronnie, even though he was only 5'4" tall, could command the entire stage so powerfully and project so much character out to the large audience? True showmanship.
How tall are you supposed to be to be able to do that?
@@sojourner7597 I think that he means that Dio commands such power that it feels like he should be 50ft tall.
Very true. Saw him fronting Sabbath around 1992. He had the whole audience in the palm of his hand. Utterly mesmerising 🤘
Great front man really amazing in a small venue like House of blues with armored saint and lynchmob
A-hole Ozzy made fun of him for being short. Like thats something you can change...
Dio is the best ever he loved his fans and we love him RIP Ronnie we miss you
His voice was so amazing.
I love watching you react to music I've listened to for 40+ years.... Your emotions show how much you care and know!!
Finally, the world will remember Ronnie again (us fans have never forgot). I like this version but favor his own Dio performance. Please take a moment just to watch it on your own, it'll show you some of his true personality as a performer. His voice is awesome but that's only half the story!
10 years gone, RIP RJD
@Dennis Mcpeak- I agree completely!
Dio's vocals on "Mistreated" with Rainbow live in Munich are some of the finest live vocals ever recorded.
Yessss... His version kicks so much ass. Totally owns coverdale on it
I wonder if Ronnie James Dio in 1980 expected that 40 years later so many people will be watching analysis of his performance:)
Thank you for showing love for Dio! My favorite rock singer, maybe my favorite singer, of all time.
I saw Black Sabbath with Dio in May of 1981 during the Heaven And Hell Tour.
Dio had everyone in the LA Coliseum in the palm of his hand and rocked our world. Greatest singer / performer ever.
I was at that tour and next.
I was at that tour in Dallas Tx. So awesome. Seen him 2 more times after that.
I was fortunate to see Black Sabbath with Ozzy singing at the Irvine Meadows in 2013... after he said he would never sing with Sabbath again... Ozzy is truely another great singer.
@@derekjackson3980 i think i saw Black Sabbath with Ozzy twice. But, seen Ozzy about 3 or 4 times. Seen him with Randy Rhodes in Dallas about two weeks before Rhodes death. Was 2nd row. Use to camp out the weekend for tickets. I guess that shows my age a little bit. Lol have a great day
@@debwoods6011 I would have love to see Randy Rhodes, my ultimate favorite guitarist and inspiration. I saw the Dio and Dokken tour back in the 80s. I found this RUclips post, as I am learning to play guitar for Heaven and Hell... The long pause during the song, I decided to try singing the lyrics because they are just so powerful.
Not only is his vocalizing technique stupendous, but his stage presence drew the audience into the palm of his hand. Simply a joy to see live.
Stage presence: Have you ever been to a Uriah Heep (with David Byron) concert!! WOW!!! Byron's presence thickly FILLED the ENTIRE colosseum.

I remember the moment I put the needle down on Black Sabbath's new album,
"Heaven and Hell". I heard some weird swirly noises from a keyboard. I'm thinking hmmm... Certainly not a sound I would associate with Black Sabbath. Then the guitar comes in. Alright, this is cool.
Then Dio..."Ooh, gather the wind, though the wind won't help you fly at all,
Your back's to the wall"
OMG...
Ronnie himself credited his voice to his training in trumpet playing, when he was a kid. Apparantely, that builds immense lung power and stability.
And occasionally, insanely puffy cheeks.
The funny thing is, his voice only ever got stronger with age, and the reason we either call him Dio or Ronnie James Dio, is because he's a fuggin LEGEND. Long live Ronnie James Dio!!! \m/
Latin language people understand you…
Dio means God.
@@j_freed actually Dio is Italian for God. However that's not why he called himself Dio
RUclips decided to bring me here and I'm glad! What a joy it's been to see you smile at the different sounds by Dio. And I'm impressed how much you enjoyed listening to it, even if that's not your genre of choice
