IMO the greatest guitar player of his Era and genres. So fluent, graceful and crisp, and totally in a class by himself. Take nothing g away from the others of the time, Eddie VanHalen, lynch, kirk, Mustang their all great in their own rite but what randy did in his brief time blessing us with his talent is unsurpassed. His mosoleum is like 2 miles from where I am born n raised and spent a lot of time there thanking him for what his guitar majesty has done for me personally.
I think randy was slightly better than Eddie...Eddie was technically brilliant but he was missing that special something which was soul quality...magic only randy had...if Jimi Hendrix had lived long enough to hear both their work he would say randy had IT like Jimi had IT and Eddie slightly missed it... 1. jimi 2. randy 3. eddie
@NovChivon edward was not a guitar player at all... he was the most amazing keyboard player on this planet. So he he would record his keyboard skills and fake guitar on stage... also why you never see him on a G3 concert with someone like Via or Satriani... he's not dead either. He was just sick of the job... Rudy is amazing as is Randy.... Ozzy is the most amazing guitar player of all of them I clouding Carlos and Zakk... as they had to imuelate Ozzy's guitar playing to be in the band... Ozzy Ozborne will forever be the most underestimated guitar player in Rock and Roll history... as audiences don't even realize that he was the composer, singer and lead/rhythm guitar on his albums... fuck off!!!
@@NovChivonAgree. 100%. Randy was slightly better than EVH. Eddie was technically brilliant, but imo it was his lack of musical excellence, or musical substance, that held him back. Randy was classically trained and had a greater understanding of advanced harmonic theory, bringing in different modes, modulating, chord borrowing, and switching from scale to scale seamlessly within a single solo. Further, his solos were much more “composed”. Meaning, they were structured, with clear musical phrasing - distinct musical parts moving from one to another, from measure to measure, in a pleasing, organized way. And on top of the structure and the harmony, Randy also had a very clear understanding of melodic phrasing. EVH was technically brilliant and had great rhythm and tone, but his actual musical choices (harmony and melody) were lacking compared to Randy. He mostly stuck to mixolydian and pentatonic, harmonically (which was very basic and common at the time) and really had very little sense of melodic structure. His solos were random, fluid, and improvised. Further, Randy was much more careful about the specific articulations of his playing (like Segovia). So he would put a lot more detail on a bend or vibrato or trill. And those little details really add to the character of his overall playing, making it that much more special. And that’s another thing (trills). Randy didn’t just mostly stick to the traditional concepts of rock and roll that had been in place since the days of Chuck Berry. Instead, he brought in a ton of classical concepts (such as the 6th interval, classical tremolo, trills, legato runs, staccato, diminished chords, diminished scale runs, and so many other harmonic and technical ideas from the classical world, that he fused very nicely with hard rock and metal). And therefore, when you put them side by side just in terms of surface level value, meaning, who is actually more technically brilliant and innovative, EVH looks a lot better. But when you look under the hood and really examine what these guys brought to the table (as musicians), Randy is just a bit better (as not only was he more musically advanced and out of the box, but he also composed a lot of the music with the mindset of an actual composer - taking a lot of influence from Bach and Vivaldi, his favorite classical composer). And so, I just don’t see the same musical quality in EVH that I do in Randy, even if EVH was a damn master of shred and rock rhythm (swing). Rhoads was partially a rock god and partially a composer. And it’s the fact that he embodied those two extremely different worlds so well, in such balance, that really makes him more of a Hendrix. Imo, Rhoads and Hendrix are the two greatest guitarists. Both were very creative, fusing different genres, composing very out of the box music, bringing new scales and sounds to rock, and both could express themselves very well with their instrument. In both, I see more musical substance and more artistic expression (especially in Hendrix). I mean, Randy actually used the Dorian scale in a few of his solos, while Hendrix uses Dorian in Purple Haze. And while Hendrix may not have known what he was doing the way Randy did, both were excellent at getting unconventional sounds to really fit well within a modern rock context. And so yeah, I just agree completely. (What you call soul quality, I call musical expression. But yeah, they both had “it”.) Hendrix Rhoads Van Halen

I got to see him in 82 diary of a madman at Charleston, Civic Center, West Virginia he was a little guy and I remembered that little midget with them, but Randy Rhoads was a little slender guy but he played a mean hell of a guitar nothing that I’ve heard before quite like it. His classical mixed with metal was bad ass man that’s what made him so special. No one comes close today is 2024 and I still listen to Randy‘s music.😊

Good lord Randy was good. Compositionally and technically the best of his era and one of the best of all time. The control, tone and consistency is just unreal with just enough sponteneity to keep the live performance feel live. Amazing.
Randy's tone here is killer. Love that crunch. Thank you for sharing this with us! I always get emotional hearing Randy in live recordings. Dude was amazing.

A Randy Rhoads video is a lot like a Bigfoot video. You can be sure the person recording can not possibly hold the camera still or focused on the star. Randy breaks into the first solo and camera cuts to Tommy Aldridge. Incredible incompetence.
tbh, I think the camera man was right here. When he went straight for randy on the 2nd solo, ozzy kept walking in front of him. Kind of rough when you're on the opposite side of the stage from the guy you want to record.
