  • I heard Randy Rhoads for the first time in Crazy Train, and I was blown into utter shock and disbelief at his talents. This time I needed a live recording to see him in action. Couple that with Ozzy's unique singing ability and we have a performance I've now had on repeat a few times now. This was absolutely insane!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Ozzy Osbourne performing "Mr Crowley" for the first time.

This isn't live in concert but I'll take anything from this period. There are actual live videos of Randy but few and far in between. My buddy and I had tickets to see Ozzy with Randy in 81 at a small one level venue (3500 capacity maybe) and Ozzy cancelled the show. Didn't realize there would never be another chance. Saw Ozzy when they resumed after Randy's tragic accident with Brad Gillis. It was still really good. Also love Rudy Sarzo. Saw him again in '83 with Jake E Lee.

Watching Elizabeth’s face melt upon hearing RR just takes me back to being a teenager and dropping the needle on “Blizzard of Ozz” for the first time. I’d figured out some guitar stuff by then, and we had Van Halen 1 to chew on, but Randy was simply otherworldly. Still stings that we lost him so shortly thereafter.

It brought a tear to my eye, watching Elizabeth’s reaction to Randy’s first solo. But then again, listening to Randy on the Blizzard & Diary albums always does anyway. And also, I think she feels the pain that we’ve lived with for 40 years. We’ve been cheated out of a wealth of music, with Randy being taken too soon from us. Saying that, he was leaving Ozzy to become a classical guitarist…

100% Agreed, and also the ending solo on Tonight. For me you can feel the emotion he's putting into both. Personally Diary is the better of the 2 albums. That has to be an amazing feeling, to play at that level with such comfort and belief in your abilities. Then watch the audience reaction to what you are doing with them, gosh.

Randy Rhodes was an amazing classically trained guitarist who never stopped learning. It's such a shame he died so young. Dee is a great instrumental that Randy did with Ozzy. You should check it out. Crazy Train is the most heard and well known song with Randy playing guitar with Ozzy. I remember being in Junior High School and learning he passed away. It devastated many of us in school. It seemed everyone at the school knew who he was and listened to Ozzy. Several went home early from school because of it. It was a different time in the 80's. Musicians were put on a very high pedestal. Their lives were our lives. We lived and breathe music. I'm very fortunate to of had my formative years in the 70's and 80's. Music was real. You can hear the rawness of Randy's guitar. No auto-tune, no electronic correction. Amps with no modelers. Volume wide open to get the sound. You felt the music.
My sister learned Dee note for note. I'm 55 now and still remember her fingernails clicking like little hammers all over the fretboard. I tried to teach her Crazy Train while she tried to teach me Dee. Randy was a major influence of mine, and my sister's guitar playing early on. Same for Alex Lifeson & Steve Howe.
Thank you for these reaction videos. It's heartwarming to see and hear someone of a much younger generation appreciate great music to the same level I do, without a preconceived bias.

Singing comes from a different region of the brain than speaking. That's why people with dementia struggle to remember regular things but can sing entire songs and listening to music "snaps" them out of the dementia for a short time. It's crazy to see it work. There was a famous singer (can't remember his name) who did some duets with Lady Gaga before he passed of his old, crooner style songs. He couldn't remember much of anything but as soon as Lady Gaga sang the first verse he did the rest perfectly.
