Since the first time I visited Ethiopia, I had wanted to visit the ancient city of Harar. On this trip, we had a chance to visit, a very short trip just for one full day, but we made the most of the day and crammed in as much street food and exploring as possible. It was one of the overwhelmingly incredibly days - a day I’m still processing now - the food, the people, the hyenas, WOW!
Dire Dawa, Ethiopia - We landed early in the morning in Dire Dawa, the closest city airport to Harar, to begin this street food tour.
Al-Hashimi Sweets - This is the most well known legendary sweets shop in Dire Dawa. They have a number of different sweets, but we tried their baklava, which was excellent.
Price - 20 ETB ($0.71) for everything
Next in Dire Dawa we stopped at a stall near the bus station to eat some Ethiopian street food breakfast. We ordered ful, mashed fava beans with tuna, and eggs, all served on a communal platter with bread. It was delicious, and cooked right before our eyes. All the ladies were so nice and friendly.
Price - 120 ETB ($4.30) for everything
Harar, Ethiopia - It was about an hour drive from Dire Dawa to Harar, but a beautiful drive through the mountains. Harar is an ancient walled city, a maze of back alleys and walking footpaths. We arrived to Harar, dropped off our stuff at the guest house, and continue on exploring. It happened to be Ramadan when we were in Harar, and Harar is a predominantly Muslim city. So we had a chance to stop by a few places where they were preparing food in large quantities. It was amazing to see and smell.
For our first lunch we stopped at a local restaurant that Hailu took us to. Along with a spread of Ethiopian food, one of the main dishes we got was gomen besiga, which is a type of collard greens with meat. It was incredibly good, as was the dulet.
Price - 165 ETB ($5.92) for everything
Harar is one of the cities that everywhere you look, there’s something fascinating and interesting happening. We walked around the markets, explored the walled city for a few hours, and snacked on some street food.
Iftar is the evening meal to end the daily Ramadan fast, and we were invited to participate in the meal with our host family at our guest house. The house was beautiful, traditional Harar Ethiopian style. Along with a bunch of different fried snacks, the main dishes of the evening meal were fenugreek stew with injera and barley soup.
Hyena Man - One of the legends of Harar is the hyenas, which go back hundreds of years, believed to chase out evil spirits and enemy, as well as the hyenas playing a role in the Harar culture. One of the edge of town, in the middle of darkness, the hyena man feeds wild hyenas camel meat. Sitting on a rock, hyena on my back, face to face with a giant hyena, was undoubtedly one of the scariest things I’ve ever done.
Fatira - Finally to end this amazing day of Ethiopian street food and attractions in Harar, Dessie and I had a fatira.
Total price (for 2 and drinks) - 120 ETB ($4.30)
Thanks to Go Addis Tours (goaddistours.com/) for arranging this trip for me. Note: I paid for this tour, but I highly recommend them - they did a great job. And Dessie and Hailu were fantastic!

The feeding of the hyenas was amazing!!! When he said that this tradition started hundreds of years ago, my first thought was “I imagine they fed them to keep them from coming into their town and causing any kind of distraction or harm.” In other words, the humans and animals came to an understanding 😊 & that’s beautiful!
Exactly! You clever for figuring it out, just like that! Make u enemy u friend. 🇪🇹

I hope cnn will hire me replacing Anthony Bourdain
Sometimes the best thing is not to go mainstream media, it keeps you humble & you create your own terms.
B. Hall he don't need them
Producers will make bank from him.
Networks come with major restrictions on what one can say, or what they want said on their shows. A certain degree of independence is lost in being part of one.
Pity the twit who fashions anyone will ever replace Bourdain. Your wet dreams are invalid.
I feel an element of guilt in having preconceived images of Ethiopia inscribed in my mind. No hormone no artificial no fertilizer no chemicals all goods and live still super natural.
Sorry but Africa is known to have MANY chemicals, many fertilizers and NO laws in which the food is grown, made, stored, shipped, kept etc etc etc.
Lmao
Deadcrows1981 And the chemicals so happen to come out of African soil? I think other continents are responsible of that my guy.
@@Deadcrows1981 The only reason Americans become sick, is because our bodies are toxic to the organic way of life. This is why we get sick whenever we do a "Cleanse", when in fact Ethiopians eat a daily diet of clean food that purifies the body. Any sickness they suffer from, is because of Western influence from the experimental projects from Western culture under the disguise as "Missionary" work.

Africa trully is one of a kind. So much richness in the people and culture that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. Thank you Mark for sharing.
No its not false because i am African but live in the England. I have to mention though that i lived in Africa upto the age of 14 so i know what i am talking about. In fact i am from East Africa originally and Mark has been exploring some of the places in east africa that i've been and lived
Why are white South Africans living in South Africa, in China and all over the world? That answers your question. Plus living here does not invalidate my claim that Africa is one of a kind. I bet you havent even been there. If you have then you have not explored it. African history a lone triumphs European history in terms dynamism . When it comes to nature, there is just too much for africa to be proud of. When it comes to culture, Europe is a baby. When it comes to diversity of people, europe is a baby. When it comes to climate, they have it all e.g winter summer, constant sun, deserts, amazons, Rivers, lakes, moutains etc. When it comes to diversity of languages, europe is a baby. Natural resources, europe is a baby. Why do you think all eyes have been on africa even before colonisation? The whites wanted so much to have africa as their own. why do you think they fight for it? Its not a false generalisation. Africa is a continate and with the most countries, so you'd expect way a lot of things going on.
Also, as someone who studied Humanities, and Architecture + Engineering, I investigate and compare and analyse different countries around the world.
I very much follow the activities taking place in Africa and around the world. I am well informed i would say.

Dire Dawa and Harrar were my old stomping grounds for many months in the Smallpox Eradication Programme working for the World Health Organization as a Peace Corps volunteer. As for the hyenas, been there, done that.
What year was this??
Every time I watch one of Marks videos I can 't help but feel envious for what he gets to do and see, especially the food. But I've never been so envious as I am after watching this video of him with the hyenas. I'm sure Mark will cherish that for the rest of his life, it truly must have been a life changing moment.
Hey mark you show it as it’s with humble smile as you enjoying the technique of eating anywhere your feet touched, keep going you’re awesome.
