Hi, Justin! Hello, everyone! I really need the second opinion, guys on my way to singing high notes.
Why does my vocal teacher keep saying there's no much effort in singing high notes? That kinda blows my mind! I can see from facial expressions on every music genre that singers DO actually scream and try their best to not move holding their position still - that doesn't look like a "little effort"!
The second thing I still can't understand is his advice to lower the pressure on cords on my way from low to high sound (glissando for example) - he says that too much pressure on high notes "blows away" the good sound and makes it weak. But personally to me it feels like if I reduce "the pressure" even more the cords stop from vibrating and I'm definitely losing the sound ending with a plain exhale.
    What do I do?

Hi Graf! Singing high notes can definitely be athletic, but the goal is to be able to do it with ease (no strain, and reproducible). Sometimes a singer's face is because they are working very hard for it and sometimes it's just because they are trying to express emotion or intensity. So we can't always go by how they look. For the pressure you're talking about, it sounds maybe like your teacher wants you to use less breath pressure. This can be difficult to do when your vocal folds are used to having the air help them achieve the pitch. So, you're not alone! All of this makes sense. Would you be available to come to Justin's live chat next Thursday, July 11th at 2PM? He could definitely guide you on this! In the meantime, check out these episodes:
