Yep, Spark plug tubes seals, also a compression test is inconclusive for this purpose, a cylinder leakage test is the way to go, topping off the radiator for bubbles and checking for bubbles
Agree! This happened on my BMW 740il with the same engine. Heat in the back of the engine bay causes the gasket to fail. Valve cover gasket replacement isn’t too difficult.
I love how you say "These old Range Rovers are really unreliable". Dude, I used to built these things and trust me, the NEW ones are shit, never mind the old ones!! They spend more time on a ramp than they do on a road!
@Robert McGuire, saying they're more reliable doesn't mean they're "reliable". And that's coming from owning several Range Rovers. Even the BMW versions are really pretty decent if you just take care of the Vanos and timing chains every 15 years or 150k + miles the finer optic BS in the jaguar based vehicles are also terrible.
Both cylinder head gaskets (you wouldn't do just one of them) on that rig, done by a shop that knows what they're doing (such as resurface and pressure check the heads, for a start), would run at least about 6-7000 dollars. Honestly it's usually better to just find a solid used engine from a wrecker and swap that in, rather than spend all that money gambling that the bottom half of the engine is going to hold up much longer, after having been run with coolant/water contaminated oil for who knows how long.
@@someone28 didnt that Range Rover end up on somebodys ranch or something to be used for target practice? Hopefully nobody fired any heavy rounds into the engine block.
I love these kind of videos. Thanks for taking the time to produce this one. One of the great joys in life is getting something that appears to be broken - whether that be a car , a relationship - whatever - to work again . Of course being tooled up in this life is very important. By the way we have a decent TV series on fixing up motors in the UK - its called Wheeler Dealers
Your guess that there was a major oil leak on that first spark plug was all wrong. The oil was on the outside of the plug; the part that stays outside the engine. So, if there is oil there, then you are guaranteed to have a valve cover gasket leak. It would tell you nothing about the compression on that one cylinder.
actschp1 - I was going to comment on this as well. The BMW engines have a bad trait (several actually) with the valve covers leaking oil into the spark plug wells. That’s all that is. It’s usually worst on the back ones as the engine is at a slight angle back (like most engines) so the oil pools back there inside the valve covers. It can lead to misfire faults on those plugs as the oil and dirt will conduct and lead to a current path to the block inside the well / outside the cylinder when the coil discharges. I have an 04 RR. About to start a series here on RUclips restoring it. Gonna be a great series.
actschp1 i came here to comment the same thing. Dont get me wrong i think this range rover is junk and is worth parts but oil on the outside of a spark plug is a valve cover gasket not telling on where the head gasket may be leaking from. There are other places that water could be coming from and a coolant compression visual check might help find it. I hate when misinformation is put out on some of these channels.

If it's between junking it or trying the fix I choose to try it. But like others have said the cooling system will get gunked up. I have a v8 explorer with a ba
Badly ruptured waterpump/engine gasket that required complete removal of engine and tranny at the minimum of 2.5k . Way over what it's worth. Ran a ton of heavy duty leak fix. 5 years later it still runs perfect. Coolant still looks the garbage despite multiple coolant flush but these old 5.0 engines are difficult to break. Do this with a smaller higher power engine and almost guaranteed to have problems later.
No, test ALL of them
Might be worth putting in a can of piston rings !

This dude is definitely related to Adam Sandler
Dont you love it when Sam answers the question in your head in this next statement
I've managed to change the head gasket using a maual.. What gets me is the electrics.
I've always said that with cars you either pay it on the front end (new car), or you pay it on the back end (used car). However sir, you have successfully proven that it is possible to pay it on the front end AND the back end, at the very same time. Seriously, good luck to you on this project car. If you ever get it running, my advice is to sell it as soon as possible for whatever you can get out of it.
So you buy a new car drive it 100 miles and it's now worth 5k less. Seems like great sense
I wanna manual swap a modern range rover, maybe put a LS IN IT to have it s a daily
There is an ls swap kit for the rover that uses the factory trans but a manual swap would be nice
Saw an auction Tesla marked "DEAD" that just had a dead battery 😂
There ain't no such thing as a mint Range Rover
Maybe in america
There are, but you probably just look on facebook marketplace and craigslist.
Mint as long as they are in the StealerShip showroom
Maybe like a Polo Mint, if it has a hole in the middle
Fuckin mint 👌
200000 miles my tundra was just getting broken in
Those will run forever as long as you do scheduled maintenance. Excellent vehicle of choice as well!
Well, I've got 147k on my 1995 YJ. (And that is the 4 cylinder not the i6.) I feel like people should throw roses as I drive by.
You will have to put another 200k on your vehicle to even come close to my level of bragging rights. ; )

Hey Sam! I'm a old cautious Viet Vet but pretty computer savvy. BTW, I was drafted after enjoying college including Woodstock in '69. Does 'Honey' have access to my personal info on google chrome? Kudos, great video! I'm sold on continuing to grow with you. Sadly, I'm on borrowed time.
What the hell happened to the Gallardo?

Rich tx I’d go with plan B , Spicoli . Hoof it over to the Mi-T-Mart and see if they have any spray paint . Let your creativity flow from there.
Oh and pick up the new Playboy.
“First, he’s gonna shit. Then, he’s gonna kill us.” 😂😂😂
He's got an awesome set of tools! We can fix it!
You bought a Range Rover? Kudos for courage.
Ugh, milkshake in the oil
Who else is a big fan of Samcrac??😃
Been off an on but been here since the original money pit lol vw
First video of yours I discovered. Cool format. Subscribed. I'm going to go out and guess this was driven by a woman (or Betta male) who didn't change the oil, or ran it with no oil.
I once bought, and fixed a car that didn't run, because the old lady put a quart of oil in it every time she got fuel. 1.8 liter Toyota, had 12 quarts of oil in the crankcase, and was pumping oil out the exhaust until it just wouldn't run anymore....
Oil drain, and a couple cans of seafoam later it was purring like a kitten.
So that’s how testing is spelled in China.
What I hate most of buying a car like that is there’s always more damage done with the fork lift.
cars and motorcycles that have been in accidents /-often- the MOST damage is caused by the tow truck operator
Yeah, fork lifting from the side destroys the driveshafts...
This RUclips video of the Range Rover covered the cost of it easily.
He wants it to pay for itself so he can pocket this money and continue to do these vids
