    Thanks Sam! I own three L322's... two are 07 TDV8 and my old 03 4.4... i went trough a lot with the old lady (but the car drove me through whole europe and through africa!)... fuse 18 is a start :)... air suspension inactive is normal after disconnecting the battery, just turn the steering wheel full left and full right and then back straight, then the air susp. is calibrated again.

    BTW: Your battery solution is a game changer in itself. I did it successfully on 2 expensive batteries that wouldn't charge and you saved me $500+ in replacements. I'm definitely going to watch all your stuff like 'Scotty' because I have a lot of cars. 3 for almost 50 years and a '87 Porsche 911 Turbo w/505 option. For the record the Porsche I bought new. The others were and still are really sought after cars. I'm just getting way too old now but I do have a nice climate controlled shop (barn-like) for my babies. The internet is great because when I was younger I kept a shop and a rollback just for going to auctions with family and friends. My 2,500 sq' shop (back then) was great for watching master mechanics who could do anything. Really gifted men! Sorry, I'm getting too wordy again! Thx!

    Take a deep breath and put your hand in your pocket Sam. I drove a 2009 Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8 for 2 years and even though it cost me an eye-watering amount to run (36mpg at best when i do 35-40k miles a year, £500 per service carried out twice a year due to mileage, £550 tax, £400 insurance per year, two front tyres at £250 each, front wheel bearing £300) i can honestly say if i was doing less miles i would have another one in a heartbeat. I stuck with it for two years, but had to admit in the end it wasn't suited to my job and i was killing both it and my wallet in the process. Nothing else you will ever drive makes you feel so relaxed at the helm, nor so above the turmoil of the road. It doesn't matter if it's a 5 mile tailback or a 3am empty motorway, you won't find a more comfortable or gratifying place to sit than behind the wheel of a Range Rover (specially L322 like yours or newer). Yes there are cheaper cars, yes there are more reliable cars, but not one of them will make you feel like one of these will.

  • @CarDocBabaPhilipo
    @CarDocBabaPhilipo 5 лет назад +9

    Just in my experience, pull the heads and check the damage. If you have cracks in the heads or the bill runs high (too much wear on the valves or the cylinders), get a good used engine (make sure you actually hear it run and check it thoroughly). Sounds like the rest of the vehicle was maintained well and I can tell you they can be great 4x4 and road cars. Can be... (mechanic for 45 years)

    • @johngaltline9933

      Was mentioned in the first vid, even a used engine for the clunker costs more than the value of the car. Might be worth the time to do the gaskets, barely, as it's worth more parting it out that it the ROI on fixing it. For a quick flip trash car, a bottle of leak stop isn't a bad first try that might make it worth the time to fix the other issues instead of just selling it for parts.

    • @CarDocBabaPhilipo
      @CarDocBabaPhilipo 5 лет назад

      Agreed. The used engine cost was my only cringe point (missed that comment). Haven't had much success in past years (20 years since my last try) with leak stop on cylinder head issues. Of course I gave up on liquid glass type stuff as it sometimes stopped up the cooling systems more than stopping leaks, lol! the new stuff may work better. Hope it does!

      I have been presented with the opportunity to buy one similar to this with a blown head gasket (the guy wants $3k of which id never pay) but I'm curious if I'd be able to replace the head gasket myself. I'm a fireman that has worked on fire trucks (doing PM's and brakes) and I have also worked on my previous vehicles such as alternators, starters, radios, blower motors, a lot of bolt on stuff. I consider myself mechanically inclined but a novice compared to men like yourself who have done this professionally. What skills would it take for me to replace this myself? Would I need a heap of special tools? I'm just throwing this question out there trying to see if this would be something I could buy and fix to turn it to my daily day driver vehicle. 🤔 Thanks in advance for any help!

    Friend of mine is a former Rover technician who now works for a Benz dealer. He said he would see in a normal week 2-3 rovers come in on a rollback trailer that had their air suspension busted from normal driving and the mileage would typically be under 30,000. Another issue common was to have a total computer failure which requires a complete replacement with a long wait time sometimes due to parts available. He said they just build absolutely sht quality vehicles. It's amazing people have not figured this out yet.

    I love these cars. Easy to fix on Saturday morning and cheap to buy from disgruntled owners. I bought one with 122k miles and only needed camshaft position sensors. I drove it for eight months then down again. One morning the dreaded P0011 code came on with rattling and a bunch of codes later. I tried calling mobile mechanic because I was on the road... but after a brief inspection, the 30 years experienced mechanic dropped the bad news. He told me the timing chain was kaput and required extensive work $4k parts and labor. I towed my baby home! On Saturday morning, I research for an hour while eating mandazis and tea....mainly reading stuff from Bimmerboards because of M62 commonality with BMW. I would say 70% of comments thought Vanos timing chains were the cause of p0011, but one person recommended checking oil filter housing. Since I only go for easy things to fix, I took out the filter housing cleaned it and blew dirt off, then dropped the sump and went ahead to change the oil. Two hours later, I started, and the rattle was gone. I drove it again for months, and I hit a dead end this time the big one I thought (transmission failsafe program) with jerking. I took it to stealer (dealer) and after two hours of the inspection/ diagnosis. He came out and quoted $9500 and suggested getting rid of it. I drove home, and on Saturday morning, we descended on it with my partner. Before we dropped the ZF5HP24 transmission down, we did the easy stuff. Fixed transmission cooler line and put it new battery. The error message disappeared. I drove it for few days hoping to work....damn that was 23 months ago and still rolling. Transmission is hgood while the stealer was quoting almost $10 grand. Please, with mechanics, get 2-4 opinions and start with the easy free fixing first!
    I fix my car on Saturday morning and NEVER giving money to scam/mechanics!

    I won't even put a switch on it for the mobilizer, I rather put a cheap relay to make a contact when you turn the switch on, then crank the engine to make it run, and when the engine is off it is off as well. So you eliminate the switch part and it becomes automatic and non issue. You need to have someone that understands the electric part and relay ON/OFF conditions and how to.

      @@nickking1510 Well, yes and no I think. ^^
      The antifreeze didn't do the tensioners any favour, but the timing chain guiderails are prone to break at the TU engines. Then the chain runs on the bare rail without the guiding plastic, chain has more slack in it and rattles against the timing chain housing.
      It's a common problem, on the M62TU you should do a timing chain replacement every 150-200k km. The non TU M62 has been seen more often with 300k and more on the first chain. But then the chain needed to be replaced.
      ^^
      And Samcrac's M62 has massive chain noise, both Vanos units are imitating a diesel and over all the engine needs much much love. :D

My recommendation...insure it and burn it...or part it out if you feel the need to stay honest. It will likely have catastrophic engine failure soon if you drive it. There is a possibility the the coolant/oil mixture is making the Vanos noisy but probably it is too late to save it now.

      That thing has a ton of miles on it. It’s gonna need a new suspension soon and probably has worn out bushings everywhere, exhaust is gonna need replaced, power steering is probably on its last leg, Who knows if the Speedo even works. Dumb idea to put a motor in it, although if I had 45 people near me like the ones who thumbs up this idea, I would consider it, nothing like a bunch of dumb consumers to sell things to.

      Pablo Céspedes , totally! I had one exactly like this one. It ran problem free for four years (miracle!) until it died the same death as this one. Otherwise such an amazing vehicle. I pulled horses across the country, went off roading in the Colorado mountains . It was a boss while it was living. And hands down the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever had. I’d take this one just to love it (and curse it) for ever more.

    Sam you could always find the power wire to that module, and instead of it being hot all the time, just change it to Accessory power. That way it resets every time when the car is turned off, then on.
    If that doesn’t work then use a cheap $5 relay. One pole (NO) is Accessory power and the other is Hot power(NC). Use the wiper (C) to the security device. The coil is Accessory power & ground as normal. I believe any change in state where it loses power momentarily during the key rotation should make it more automated than the manual switch method.
