No it doesn't clog up the heater or the radiator. I've used similar products multiple time without any issues. I've also blew a head gasket and got the engine so hot it seized up and after I fixed it I drove it for anouther seven years with no issues. Just luck of the draw. The thermostat being stuck is what blew the head gasket in the first place. But with the amount of valve train noise due to it over heating that engine is not goin to last long anyway.
@@jasoncampbell5518 These kind of cooling system stop leak products will eventually clog or at the very least will reduce flow to both the heater core and radiator. Ask a legit mechanic to show you the internal mess it can cause. Now for a vehicle that you don't have money to correctly repair or isn't worth the money versus value then these products can be a good option. I would advise to flush out the cooling system after the leak has been sealed.
@@vegasfordguy I can relate. I had an 1990 town car that constantly ran hot. I didn't know better at the time and just kept running it. Eventually the head gasket blew and we pulled the heads. I found what looked like glitter. Many different sealers that plugged up all of the cooling channels and found a solid ring that sealed the thermostat shut. That's when I learned any fix in the can is a gimmick to get something "working" so you can pawn the problem off on someone else.
@@Moose1207 👍👍I had a Pontiac Bonneville GXP with a Cadillac Northstar. (Famous for overheating) I used a stop- leak product that looked like glitter, worked really good. Then, eventually the thermostat froze up, it would get really hot, then I would stop driving it, cool it off, add water ,repeat. Someone suggested I just remove the thermostat, which I did. The engine thrived on it. Think you only use the stop- leak once or twice, after that it really gums up the works. If you remove the thermostat, the check engine light will come on. So I needed to replace it to get a smog, that's when my problems began again!
Samcrac, you have a gift! God blessed you with smarts! That's awesome you are being a blessing to your viewers! So cool u fixed the car and made it look so effortless!
"One of you will end up with this truck!" Sounds like you are threatening us with venereal disease. The gift that keeps on giving that you can never get rid of.
Whenever using that block seal or head gasket stuff always remove thermostat. Also you could have drilled them holes much much bigger and some people gut it out. Use a dremil tool to cut off the springs and end cap
P.S. another reason you're boiling over in your engine is that you're running 100% water. The engine operating temp is well over 100-deg which will cause the water in the engine to boil over. Use a 50/50 solution of water and coolant and that should stop the water from boiling over provided the head gasket has sealed and there is no more air in the cooling system,
Sam, the sensor on the thermostat is just a 2 prong so it's just heat sent OUT to a temp gauge. If it was a 3 or 4 wire then 1 or 2 wires would return to the computer module which might make it open/close.
That sealer will usually do more damage than good, be prepared to replace the heater core, possibly the radiator as well. Most shops will either refuse to touch it or charge you huge once they find out that stuff is in the system as well.
Thanks for showing us the diagnostic twists and turns. Liked your can-do attitude in getting to the bottom of the problem. There are a lot of unfair comments posted here that reflect the poster’s inattention and bias. Sam wasn’t trying to do a rebuild that some seemed to expect. They totally missed Sam’s intention - which was to figure out what was the problem and make economic decisions to get it going and drive it as a serviceable beast of burden until it dies. For example - drilling through the thermostat wasn’t a fix, it was done as diagnosis. Didn’t you hear what he said? In the end he found a replacement for between 60-70. In the end I think he did a pretty good job of it and we got to see the trials and tribulations of taking on the challenge and even learnt a thing or two along the way. Thanks Sam. I’ve subscribed.
A man walks into a hospital, missing an arm that was ripped off. Doctor SamCrac : Just wait a moment while i attach this tiny bandaid to the wound. FIXED IT....
Real bandaids are expensive, so I'm using some recycled tape I took off an Amazon box and renewed with a little generic white glue. It's literally the same thing, but costs basically nothing.
When you modified the thermostat it will make it overheat again(just slower)... thermostat that stays open(or modified) is just circulating hot water which will overheat. A thermostat is supposed to close so that the fluid in the radiator gets nice and cold before opening.
To answer your question about the thermostat it has a heating element which is that electrical connector on the housing. To test it you have to put it in boiling water then apply power and ground to the connector. It should start to open after about 5 minutes or more. It looks exactly like the thermostat in a BMW 540i and those open at 210 deg F which is hard to duplicate outside the car
Pro tip. When checking cars on the used lot, keep a wet wipe package close. Use your finger and wipe the inside of the tailpipe. What is going on in the engine goes out the tailpipe. Is it dry, oily, sooty, etc?
Great series Sam. My son noticed me watching your videos on my phone and asked, "is your car broken? If not, why are you watching someone fix cars?" Your videos remind me of my childhood. My dad, uncles, and grandpa use to fix cars. I thought they would teach me their craft but they wanted me to go to college. Maybe it was for the best but I still remember getting under a car and asking questions or handing my dad a wrench. Thanks for trip down memory lane. Onward, AW
My father was a service engineer with standard.motor products of india and was trained at Triumph UK. In those days all diagnostics were done by the "ear" and eyes. No gadgets. He thought me the various noise a car makes and the reasons. So when you said head gasket broken and you had no traces of oil in the radiator i new it was not the HG. Any way thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it and i loved my old man RIP dad.
Wow Sam! I am blown away with this I just found these videos today, I wonder if you gave the vehicle away already. I found the videos from the first one and watched them in series. Love his bodge on the thermostat. I did that 25 years ago on my VW Turbo diesel camper van. Still like that when I sold it. Weak engine would be worn out at 100,00 miles.
Since you plan to give it away, you should replace the thermostat. Remember that not everyone lives in FL, and cold weather citys will need a properly functioning thermostat.
New thermostat and radiator cap anytime a car over heats along with new coolant and and oil change is what I’ve learned. It also helps to use the correct coolant (very important). What’s the the rattling noise? Lifters or timing?
At that age it sounds fine. My 1FZ-FE motor sounds like an sewing machine or tractor at 240k. But head gasket sealer in a bottle is a ticking time bomb. That stuff is only a temporary quick fix to get you home.
@@robofatcat that's what happens when you get water in oil. The water vapor makes its way to the top and puts rust pits in the valvetrain. This thing is going to need a new engine after lobes start disappearing from the cams.

I don't know much about fixing cars, but a troubling vw golf got me doing lots of research and i came across your channel. Followed this range rover "revival" and loved it. Pretty cool

It was probably driving to the mechanics shop...
Since we are all sharing, I saw a Chevy running yesterday too.

You need to road trip it to the winner! That would make for an interesting video- you’d know if it’s truly “fixed”
I sure as hell wouldn’t drive it back to Ohio lol. That vehicle can be so expensive when things start going and being it has over 200k miles and head gasket issues already I wouldn’t be looking forward to electrical problems, front end issues etc.
Woa now lets let him get further than his going across his back fields before we get that far ahead of ourselves lol. I’ve been to Mexico and just making it through there not even thinking about the others is risky itself.
I like that tractor in your photo what kind is that? When I was a boy my grandpa always had Case tractors. He actually bought me a complete set of Case tractors from the co-op just before he passed away that I cherish to this day. Mind you though this was around the era of when Case tractors were white probable early 80’s but I have a soft spot for them.
I live in Cali, if that thing makes it to Alabama from Florida without exploding I would be impressed hyh
You have to remove the thermostat before using any of those head gasket sealers. It will also clog up the heater core and radiator.
Did you even watch the any of the other videos?
Awsome job! Engine sounds super super tappy

Whenever using that block seal or head gasket stuff always remove thermostat. Also you could have drilled them holes much much bigger and some people gut it out. Use a dremil tool to cut off the springs and end cap
The sensor on the thermostat is the temperature sender, connected to the dash temp gauge. It does not control the thermostat in any way.
How about an electric assisted thermostat?
You are wrong. This is a thermostat heater which heats up to open thermostat further when required.
P.S. another reason you're boiling over in your engine is that you're running 100% water. The engine operating temp is well over 100-deg which will cause the water in the engine to boil over. Use a 50/50 solution of water and coolant and that should stop the water from boiling over provided the head gasket has sealed and there is no more air in the cooling system,
Sam, you didnt fix anything. You put a bandaid on a shotgun wound...

Gotta give credit when credit is due man good job bringing that car back alive
Hell yeah!
The idel sounds like mr krabs walking

Real bandaids are expensive, so I'm using some recycled tape I took off an Amazon box and renewed with a little generic white glue. It's literally the same thing, but costs basically nothing.
LOL 😁
I give it less than a month of driving around before head gasket blows again.
😂
Mine blew over 2 months ago and I put that stuff in it. It still runs perfectly
Another money pit. Wow a giveaway. Wonder how much metal recycling will pay for it!
Well it is a Range Rover after all. Lol
That long.
When you modified the thermostat it will make it overheat again(just slower)... thermostat that stays open(or modified) is just circulating hot water which will overheat. A thermostat is supposed to close so that the fluid in the radiator gets nice and cold before opening.
pretty sure that a thermostat is for a faster warmup time
To answer your question about the thermostat it has a heating element which is that electrical connector on the housing. To test it you have to put it in boiling water then apply power and ground to the connector. It should start to open after about 5 minutes or more. It looks exactly like the thermostat in a BMW 540i and those open at 210 deg F which is hard to duplicate outside the car
After watching all this, I'd tell you to keep it. Lol. I would have fixed it the right way, not the cheap way.

Pro tip. When checking cars on the used lot, keep a wet wipe package close. Use your finger and wipe the inside of the tailpipe. What is going on in the engine goes out the tailpipe. Is it dry, oily, sooty, etc?

Maybe it was for the best but I still remember getting under a car and asking questions or handing my dad a wrench.
