My concern of pulling those injectors out with a cherry picker is keeping everything straight. Looks like a good way to break one. I bet there is a ton of carbon in that engine

Hi Sam, I think the special slide hammer is the problem here. It needs to be extended so you have at least 12 inches of travel and a bigger weight needs to be fitted.
I had no issues when pulling the injectors on my XJ while doing the timing chain tensioner replacement. Pulled the fuel rail and ignition coils to have free access to the injectors and had no trouble pulling them. A couple solid pulls was all that was needed to break all 8 free.

I think I would modify those stupidly short slide hammer and get the sliding part almost double the length and make a heavier hammer part then get an air hammer underneath the slide and hammer it out that way. Using the engine crane although it has been working is a recipe for breaking them.
Nice video Sam. What I learned is....Not to buy a Range Rover. I have a BMW 7 series e38. I fix myself and I'm glad it's not that completed aside from the timing chain of which I'm doing now.

Very clear diagnostic procedure! Next question, do we clean the remaining injectors before putting them back in? Of course! Actuate them then shoot some carb cleaner in them!
Every time I watch your videos it reminds me of the commercial back in the 80's.... the one with the monkey's smacking the drivetrain components with 2x4's yelling, "Gee boss, never worked on a transmission before". I totally like the creative & ingenuity, it is just funny sometimes how you get to where you are. Keep it up.
Sam you need to power the injector if you want to see fluid flow. It’s simple just use jumper wires to the connector. Once you power it with 12v shoot your fluid and you can see the pattern of the injector.
Hey Sam, I think you need to pull the injectors with a steady force not a dynamic puller. That is why they won't come out and self-destruct when you use a puller. You can spray some penetrating oil around the outside and try to rotate the injector body so that it will break free.
Aother suggestion would be put a load of tension on the cherry picker and add force with the slide hammer, even if you had to modify it first. I wonder if the factory uses some hi-temp grease when they install these? Sometimes a dry install is actually better - I've known Coppaslip to dry out and act like glue.
The old 5.4l Ford tritons the recommendation for getting the sparkplugs out was to fill the plug wells with carb cleaner over night. I think they trick may work for these since it seems like this is carbon build up causing the issue.
It seems to me the key to stuck things is pressure + impact. So the cherry picker + either a air hammer to vibrate things, or using that slide hammer to add some kick.
The way to remove those type of stuck injectors is soak the base of the injector with WD40. Keep spraying it towards the lower part of the injector.. If need be soak overnight. It will slowly drip down to the base of the injector to free it up. You'll know when it's free when you can turn the injector back and forth. But don't use too much force doing that. It will free up.
If you think those were difficult to take out, try the jaguar f-type with the hood vents , the injectors are exposed to the rain elements. They are pain in the neck.
The reason why the injectors get stuck is carbon buildup in the tips. They go directly into the combustion chamber. The way i get them out is: set the piston you are working on at Top Dead Center. So the piston is all the way up and all the valves closed. After that is Achieved, i fill up the one cylinder with Seafoam and keep it full while i pull that injector. It losens up the carbon and makes removal easier. That seafoam eventually is going to leak past the piston rings and make it to the oil. So i have an “oil change kit” ready, but dont change the oil until after the first test drive.
Is there a reason why you went straight to tear down? I don’t know much about LR/JAGS, but seems simplest first step might have been to try some HEET, Barrymans, or Seafoam top end treatment. It may have cleared up the stuck injector, and then no tear down necessarily. Granted it could have happened again if the injector was failing, and been a bandaid solution. At least if they do fail again you can get the parts replaced under FCP’s warranty.
The crazy thing is we have a 2008 Mercedes Benz GL550 with 265,000kms and it gave none of the problems this RR or pretty much any other RR has given even when much newer. It's just been changing out wear and tear items and the only failure we had was the rear tailgate motor failed. It wasn't a hard fix. I get that the RR has more of a luxurious feel but that means nothing if it's broken down or breaking down all of the time. I wouldn't hesitate to take our 14 year old GL out on a road trip, I wouldn't have that same confidence in a newer RR.
I'd be putting just a lil dab of white lithium grease around the sealing point of the injector when installing the new ones so they aren't so hard to remove the next time... 🤷♂️
I would probably use a pulley system taking notice on d angle of the pull to prevent d injecTor from bending. Use weights to apply a constant pulling pressure while lubricating the injector
Sam there's a really easy way to test and clean a injector using a 9-volt battery a clear tube and large syringe. You load seafoam into the syringe and connect the hose to the fuel input side of the injector. The syringe builds pressure and also forces the Sea foam into the injector. Then you connect the 9 volt battery to the positive and negative of the fuel injector using really tiny terminal lugs, connecting and disconnecting the positive just like a injector is pulsed you're pulsing it manually by connecting and disconnecting the positive. That way you're able to see the spray pattern and clean up the spray pattern.
Fake news. Have you ever owned one? The issue that he’s having is a wear and tear item that only happens on higher mileage Rovers and JAGUAR’s any of these high-end brands have a specific issue with their engines it doesn’t matter the make or model they all do I’ve been at Rover and Jaguar for over 20 years. I will admit the biggest issue that the jags and Rovers have especially in the 5.0 timing chains.

On the direct injection stuff I have always had luck with heating the head up and then using a big pry bar
Have you tried the Double Dutch Rudder to get the injectors out?!?
Classic "Hold my beer" fix...love it...
Good job as usual Sam!
Range Rovers are always the most headache, but they just look too good 😭
Corey chase!!! After reading comments,.. not many people know how "handy" a stepmom is
This is why you should always use a premium fuel like Shell V power or BP ultimate in cars like this. Cheap fuel is just not worth it in the long run.
Glad I found your vids, as I’ve been looking at 2016 Rover
The slide hammer needs more mass and slide travel to bulid up the force.
That twisty Thomas be wilding
make it happen sam, this is an awesome using your head moment
Yes a lil dab of flammable lithium grease.
Or copper or aluminum anti.seize
I would probably use a pulley system taking notice on d angle of the pull to prevent d injecTor from bending. Use weights to apply a constant pulling pressure while lubricating the injector
You got lucky pulling out those injectors Merry Christmas Sam it was nice to see your step mom again🎄love the video ⛄🐐
Merry Christmas to you too!
Great removal technique & diagnosis.
Can we thank the government and ethanol for this job ?
Try soaking overnight in Cola (yes the soda!) Nothing would shift the injector in my BMW and on a friend's recommendation this worked!
Curious, why are the cars always out in the field away from the tools? 🤔
Sam, will you ever learn that Range Rovers are indeed a nightmare for their owners? Cory's cameo was hilarious.
Their original owners are rich and would just ditch them and get something else. But their second and third owners get all the problems.
