    Barry congratulations on a fantastic new boat! Sadly that's the way boats always go. We make plans for upgrades and projects and we work to get them done but alas fate usually has another plan. You guys were destined to find one another and as so often happens a great boat falls into your lap. That doesn't mean there won't be problems or projects to do but you'll work through it. Finally an inboard diesel and an auto helm makes life aboard so much easier. You can helm when you want but don't have to.

    I watch every episode, beginning with Perihelion. Somehow I missed your decision on what to do with her. But I LOVED watching the resurrection/transformation of Dagon. She is beautiful and I look forward to seeing her engine running and more projects on her underway. BUT NOW! Congratulations on Thunder Child! Good things happen to good people and how amazing is it that John & Viv would make your dreams come true! I really can't wait to see what you do with Thunder Child. JUST PLEASE...keep us updated on Dagon and Perihelion too. Who would have guessed that Sailor Barry would one day own his own FLEET of wooden sailing boats!

    • @SailorBarry
      @SailorBarry  8 месяцев назад +5

      Perihelion is sitting safe at the docks getting worked on occasionally. We’ve made massive strides but you’re right. Definitely need to do an update! Thanks for following along. I’ve sold Dagon to my friend Nathan. But we’re still all working on Dagon together. And Nathan has really taken the boat further since he purchased it.

    • @drjmedders7095

      You sold Dagon???

    • @SailorBarry
      @SailorBarry  8 месяцев назад +6

      @@drjmedders7095 indeed. Owning two 40 foot boats is not a reasonable thing to do. And Nathan is a wooden boat shipwright. A great fit. We just signed the deal this week.

    • @drjmedders7095
      @drjmedders7095 8 месяцев назад

      @@SailorBarry Every bit of this is "icing on the cake!" You get a little bit from selling Dagon--that helps. Nathan is a great owner for Dagon -- AND -- you still get to participate and help complete the work on her. A triple-win!
      Can't wait for an update on Perihelion. I absolutely love that boat. It looks like Thunder Child needs a lot of work. And I can't wait to see you get started on her.

    Oh, that boat, I've walked past it lots of times.... you walked past our boat too ;) BTW that is not the Comox marina, it is the fisherman's wharf.... about half the price of the marina. That is a pretty boat though.... The difference between a ketch and a schooner is .... not much, mast placement (and therefore mast size) is about it. Deep Bay is a nice place to stop, nice people there. Anchoring out is not so nice as all the power boats run through that part at full speed anywhere past the big yellow float. Enjoy your ketch, it looks lovely both in person and on video.

    Just found your channel. Very cool. Glad I'm not the only one with inaugural issues, LOL. Our first night aboard our Alberg 30 Mahseer featured a gushing chainplate at my berth because the p.o. hadn't told me he had replaced the port lower chainplate but had forgotten to bed it, and when we enthusiastically washed down the deck with copious amounts of water, well, let's just say we spent our first evening walking through downtown Belleville with a bundle of bedding looking for a laundromat! Not as serious as an engine issue, but it sure took the gilding off the rose.

    No electricity is not an issue. Paraffin lamps and stoves still can be found and they work great. Particularly the pressure lamps. Solar panels can provide for safety lights and electronics and a bank of extra batteries can be fed by e generator..
    Electricity should be kept at a minimu anyway. it is the first thing to go wrong on a boat and it's a pain in the butt…
    Of course some sailors are masters in electronics and these kinds of things… but some of these guys wouldn't be able to cross the Channel (my home waters) on dead reckoning.
    Jean Gellineau is a great sailor. I happened to meet him very briefly at the Salon du Nautisme in Paris around 1995. He was presenting his great windvane which is the smartest one I've seen. He was so nice and so humble at the same time, definitely a great sailor. His book and fil are a reference in solo sailing.
    WIsh you the best in with your new adventure.
    Glad to see tere are still good people around in the sailing community.

    Good for you for taking on Thunder Child. I was on a long hunt for a Solid gaff cutter or ketch a couple years ago, we looked all over the island and BC Wide, but couldn't at that time find a solid enough boat that was in our budget. I found a couple that I really liked but despite my best efforts the owners did not want to part with them. I'm not a shipwright but a traditional vessel rigger and sailor, and I wasn't quite confident enough in my woodworking abilities to take on a woody that was quite old or in need of major structural work.
    One of the last boats we looked at looked great from the outside, the teak hull planking was in great shape, but my quick survey revealed rotten deck beams, cracked and rotted frames, white mould in most of the boats hidden areas, and general neglect. I think by the time we got around to having a look at Thunder Child I was starting to get a bit gun shy after some of the previous boats w'ed looked at, and maybe I didn't take the time look close enough before passing on her.
    In the end we found a fiberglass boat with a traditional hull design. I still regret not finding a gaff rig though. They are wonderful to sail, excellent, powerful downwind rigs. Forgiving and simple to rig.
    Looking forward to seeing what improvements you make to her. Looks like you got a good one.
    Cheers
    Ryan

      @@SailorBarry Absolutely! We live in Sooke and keep our boat in Victoria. Would love to meet up with you guys cruising in the summer. We will probably be up in Desolation Sound in August. We were up there last year in July. Good luck on your projects. I’m off to rip a stubborn windlass out…

    a simple very reliable way to test a thermostat is to drop it in boiling water. You should see it open. Take some pliers to grab it out of the hot water and leave it to cool. You should see it gradually close. If so it is OK. If not the part is bad.
    Congrats on your new boat, it's gorgeous!

      I guess the reason I like this video so much is because Dec 5 2023 I was given a 1988 23’proline walk around with a 225 Johnson ocean runner. By a complete stranger. It’s a long story. It’s amazing how beautiful people can be.

    Location is key. After a storm a friend of mine got a nice sailboat for free, after a storm in Key West. Granted, it needed some work. He spent more on his tender than on the sailboat! I helped him salvage a nice, straight mast from yet another boat, aground. (dumpsters at marinas hold treasures, to the dumpster-diver)

    You were saying you had a secret last episode Barry. Wow guys, super big. MEGA. Bon Voyage Dagon, Bon soir Problem child a-thunderin' down that sea-way. She's not as quaint yet, but you'll see to that, But she's a beauty to behold. And now you got a motor, plug in the past. Take a while to build another of those. And it is true, Hailly, yes, sometimes it is imperative to be makin' that moula before we get to see that cheesecake. But now you get to eat it. Ahoy mates, fair weather fore 'n' aft

    Great upload congrats on thenew boat im very inspired with your positivity during trials and tribulations. I once took a boat on test drive that broke down and left me stranded. The Honda kicker started right up then died and the pull cord broke leaving us drifting down a river dodging dead heads with a fishing net for an oar. We made it back to safety and my wife still wanted the boat I regretted that decision and the boat was cursed. I sold the boat fast forward 15 year the new owner call me and ask about the boats original name and said the boat was cursed. Glad the dog house is gone from my life. Hopefully thunder child turns out

    I like the FOO Bird Philosophy and it states If a FOO bird shits on your head don't rub it off because you will turn invisible and the moral of the story is " If the FOO shits WEAR IT " ! LMAO
