I just stumbled on this video,my parents were the fist owners of Perihelion and I sailed to Bora Bora with them back in 1982 when I was a teenager. I have some fond memories sailing perihelion in her glory days. I have seen the boat at the rowing club whenever we cruise in there. I knew Evan was not well but you sound like the perfect match for her new owners!
My goodness, what a grand old Lady. Please, please, please document the restoration! What's that old saying? Nothing is more expensive than a free boat lol. Couldn't hit the subscribe button fast enough!
Hello, I don’t normally write comments. “A Free Boat” watching the first minutes of your presentation made it obvious that you know just how much this project will not be free. I won’t list why as you already know. I just wanted to say that time fly’s and even faster the older you get. When circumstance makes your plan seem impossible: be creative, ask for help, learn from others ( mistakes/wins) don’t listen to naysayers, break large scopes into smaller steps, fight for yourself, love ones who love you, and easily said but hard in practice, never give up! Soon that day will come when leave your home port and follow the path of so many before you. Like butterflies and the migrating birds, sailors heading south to Panama. The final provisioning of themselves and vessel for the first step out into the pacific blue for the Marqueses’s and beyond. Best wishes Bryan
@@SailorBarry 🙏 Thanks SailorBarry You in the H2O or on the hard What’s your story SailorBarry? I’m boatless at the moment but can jump on and crew on a couple boats. I live in Blackstock Ontario. @@bryanbonham448 on land at the moment. My home (a 40 foot wood boat) is at the tail end of a major refit. And perihelion is still on the hard but we’re hustling to fix that asap. I work on a 120 foot mega yacht on the hard right now and a 80 foot tallship in the water. Slaving for for boats right now.
You may have heard this already but I have to say it. "Rebuilding a boat is like building a brand new one with the old one in the way" What an adventure I am in, my name is also Barry.
Difference? You have all the templates. Next to no mulling over how much materials or what shape you need. No time spent writing the blueprint, and usually you have the most expensive bits intact. Now if you go Tally Ho's route... yeah its a total rebuild. Here they need pretty much only replace the decking and 95%of all problems are fixed. Pretty good deal for a free boat.
One of my friends recently bought a huge old farmhouse. It cost a fortune to rebuild! Afterwards he said it would have actually been cheaper to demolish the house and build a new one on the land. But, I don't like new houses (or anything new really) so I can see it was worth going through all the agro to end up with something special and unique and have it exactly the way you want it. :0)
I get it. I bought a 100 year 60' Dutch sailing barge with holes in the bottom. No regrets. Greatest adventure of my life! You guys have the right attitude. Have fun
I am crazy excited to have discovered your channel at the beginning of this adventure. To me, the restoration and refit by someone who knows what is needed and knows how to do it and works hard to do it right, is my favorite kind of channel to watch. The only thing I ask, is that you pause your work often enough to post videos of your work and progress frequently so that some of us can live vicariously through you. Thanks!
Wow, look how honest he was and how well he knew his boat and what she needed. That's the type of person you always want to buy a boat from, not the guy that tells you it's in perfect condition and as you walk around you notice all these things that need fixing that the owner doesn't. Great job finding an awesome project boat with a lot of character that will really shine as you work ur way through the refit. 🙂
I'm so glad to get in on the ground floor of this project. Capt Ron is my favorite movie and I fell in love with the Formosa in that movie, It's great that you found that boat and it found you! I'm looking forward to your progress!
Its rare but sometimes RUclips recommends some gems and this video is one of them. You guys are some interesting characters too put it mildly, definitely look forward to see the rest your adventures.
Of course your insane. Having lived and refitted a boat many times over 20 years but there is nothing like it. The sense of achievement is indescribable. Best of luck guys.
As someone who has given away a beloved "yacht" myself, I understand the desire to get into this project boat. I also am realistic. This boat will need not just a lot of elbow grease, not just a lot of hard cold cash. It will need someone who is realistically enamored by the beast itself but knows what questions to ask, how to proceed, and keep up the drive and ambition it will clearly need to bring this beauty back to her true heartbeat. Never give up! I wish youse guys the best!!
Amazing! I would have had a hard time keeping myself from saying “I’ll TAKE IT!” As I first saw it walking down the dock! Yea she needs work but she’s a jewel! Work can be big but work can be done! Wish I was closer to give you a hand! Good luck and cheering you on from my own restoration projects! What a great boat!

I feel positive about the boats and hopefully positively confident in the people’s sharing of the dream! SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.
Best wishes to this brave and hopefully seaworthy project. You will love the voyage of discovery ahead! You're not nuts it's a beautiful boat. I just got done rebuilding a 1985 Mako with a two-foot hole in the bottom and both stringers we're broken. I've never ever worked on a boat before I work on cars and I know how to work with fiberglass. I did all the repairs fiberglass wiring new stringers and put in some bulkheads. It is a Mako 224 hand-laid glass. I rebuilt the ox66 Yamaha outboard 250 horsepower. We use it every year going down to Florida for lobster season we scuba off the boat. Good luck I will be watching
I'm in the UK and just found your channel. A great couple it looks like you are, love her humour. Expect many more cuts and bruises doing the boat up, and free or bought boats always offers teething troubles for the new owners
Sounds like the beginning of an incredible adventure. The production company of Captain Ron actually bought 3 Formosa 51's. One was a wreck, another housed the film crew and the third was the one most of the scenes were shot in. Also, RUclips "Sailing Miss Lone Star" refurbed a Formosa 51
Good find and good luck. I think you two will be just fine and I think you know what your in for over the next couple of years but she will be a great vessel. May the spirit of Captain Ron be with you. 🐟 😁
I've just bought Captain Ron from watching your video... The docking scene reminds me of parking a Oceanis 38 against the wall, just under Banana Wharf in Hamble marina to an observers comment "Well that was bloody impressive" ;)

If i was healthy I would love to come help. But if i can help from a distance i will. I can weld anything to anything, literally, you should see my finger.
We looked at Perihelion in April '22. Could see it needed lots of work, we didn't have the skills or the friends that you have. I bow to your superiority and wish you fair winds.
I have never been a "I have to have one" fanatic, but will stop what I am doing to watch Captain Ron. I have always loved the ketch rig and for cruising a full keel "Fat Bottom" girl gives a NICE ride. William Garden did an exceptional job with the design of the 50 series. I wish he had laid her out as a ketch gaffer. She would be awesome under top sails, stay, flying jib... I mean, hell, strip the births and fly the fart sacks too. With a 15' beam and nearly 7 tons ballast you would have to work really hard to knock her down. Can't wait to see her back in shape. The Islands are calling.
No idea why your channel popped up . Really glad it did . That is an awesome boat ! Bout 5 years ago I got a 1967 American marine Admiralty 50 . Very similar condition . But what a lot of fun! I even enjoy hauling her out to grind the paint off the bottom for fresh paint .
Oo Boy oo Boy! Congrats!?!?! Can't wait to see the her all fixed up. And from what I can see is she Needs a Ton of work. But those Boats once fixed are just fantastic Boats. So Good luck and I will be here on my lanai waiting for the next video. So until next time. Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!
I love that boat, I totally get it. I'm predicting five years and $250k, mostly offset by donations and sponsors. It's good work that you do. Perihelion deserves it.
You're extremely lucky to get this boat... It's beautiful... The more flaws you point out, the more I see it as character.... The one major thing that tells me you're way ahead of the game is that it floats... And has been floating for many many years... Anyone that thinks they're going to get a perfect boat for free is insane..lol
Well done you two. All the best to you. I watched many young couples renovating/rebuilding old boats and know you can do this. You will run inte problems and sometimes you will want to give up BUT that is when you just take a small break and then get on with it again.🙂

If i was healthy I would love to come help. But if i can help from a distance i will. I can weld anything to anything, literally, you should see my finger.
Fun to see a local restoration, good luck guys👍
Awesome! Go for it! What a fit for your life! I'll be watching!
Awesome! Where some movies are bases on a true story, you are a true story base on a movie!
Oh my god. Favourite comment ever
Wow serious score!! We would take that boat in half a heartbeat. Just found your channel but we will be following this story. Congratulations 🎊
We looked at Perihelion in April '22. Could see it needed lots of work, we didn't have the skills or the friends that you have. I bow to your superiority and wish you fair winds.
Stunning vessel. I’m very excited for you 🎉
I’m glad you are experienced sailors and aren’t going into this blind, but few things are more expensive than a free boat.
So much potential so much work ,all the best.
This journey is gonna blow up with all the sailing nuts!
She's a work of art in the rough... Beautiful... Good old William Garden...
Best of luck! You know you're in for a lot of work, but you'll have a wonderful SV in the end.
Perihelion deserves it.
if yall keep up the content youve got a one way ticket to youtube succes, good luck yall!
"Boat" is not a word,it's an acronym! for "Break out another Thousand!"
