I just stumbled on this video,my parents were the fist owners of Perihelion and I sailed to Bora Bora with them back in 1982 when I was a teenager. I have some fond memories sailing perihelion in her glory days. I have seen the boat at the rowing club whenever we cruise in there. I knew Evan was not well but you sound like the perfect match for her new owners!
Another vote for "ment to be"
Love to have this boat for free. Is he serious about it. Take a while to fix it up.
No they are not. Very very not.
Id like to Free myself from any further obligation. The movie quotes were dope.
Is that boat a Cherubini?
That would probably be the prettiest boat I have ever seen.
You may have heard this already but I have to say it. "Rebuilding a boat is like building a brand new one with the old one in the way" What an adventure I am in, my name is also Barry.
Difference? You have all the templates. Next to no mulling over how much materials or what shape you need. No time spent writing the blueprint, and usually you have the most expensive bits intact. Now if you go Tally Ho's route... yeah its a total rebuild. Here they need pretty much only replace the decking and 95%of all problems are fixed. Pretty good deal for a free boat.
One of my friends recently bought a huge old farmhouse. It cost a fortune to rebuild! Afterwards he said it would have actually been cheaper to demolish the house and build a new one on the land. But, I don't like new houses (or anything new really) so I can see it was worth going through all the agro to end up with something special and unique and have it exactly the way you want it. :0)
Its rare but sometimes RUclips recommends some gems and this video is one of them. You guys are some interesting characters too put it mildly, definitely look forward to see the rest your adventures.
I just subscribed. cant wait to go on their adventure.
Ok lets state the obvious.......you two are INSANE! And I LOVE IT!!!! Cant wait to see the rest of this adventure!
Wow, look how honest he was and how well he knew his boat and what she needed. That's the type of person you always want to buy a boat from, not the guy that tells you it's in perfect condition and as you walk around you notice all these things that need fixing that the owner doesn't. Great job finding an awesome project boat with a lot of character that will really shine as you work ur way through the refit. 🙂
I second this comment
👍👍👍😜🏴🦄🦕😁✌️🤞
I get it. I bought a 100 year 60' Dutch sailing barge with holes in the bottom. No regrets. Greatest adventure of my life! You guys have the right attitude. Have fun
I’d love a Dutch barge
@@garythmoxey2719 I loved mine. Ended up without it after the divorce. Miss the barge not the ex
I am crazy excited to have discovered your channel at the beginning of this adventure. To me, the restoration and refit by someone who knows what is needed and knows how to do it and works hard to do it right, is my favorite kind of channel to watch. The only thing I ask, is that you pause your work often enough to post videos of your work and progress frequently so that some of us can live vicariously through you. Thanks!
I knew romance was alive somewhere, and here it is. I wish them all the luck to continue as they are. Just great.
Can't believe you got a Formosa for free. What a gem!!
Looking forward to seeing her getting repaired. Well done guys.
That boat is cool as hell
Formosa 51, a great Bill Garden design. I hope Perehelion gets to shine again. Pretty boats, like pretty women, tend to soften the brains of otherwise level headed sailors. I hope Captain Barry’s skill set is enough to see him through this rebuild.
Only take her out of the water for a bottom job and other Essentials. Keep her in the water and sail ready most of the time. Use and enjoy her as you restore her. Too many of these boats get disassembled and never go back together again. Of course Tallyho is a wonderful channel an example of what is possible, but there's so many clever ways to bring this boat back little by little. Ship Happens is another great channel.
Congratulations on your boat! From experience comes wisdom... I will never leave the dock again on an old boat, I just bought, without having a professional clean the gas/diesel tanks😅
I'm so glad to get in on the ground floor of this project. Capt Ron is my favorite movie and I fell in love with the Formosa in that movie, It's great that you found that boat and it found you! I'm looking forward to your progress!
Of course your insane. Having lived and refitted a boat many times over 20 years but there is nothing like it. The sense of achievement is indescribable. Best of luck guys.
You two have the most important thing needed to take on this job , youth. Good luck.
Formosa 51's are gorgeous boats very lucky guys
IN A HEARTBEAT MY FAVOURITE BOAT YOU ARE VERY LUCKY LEARN AS YOU GO GRAHAM FROM AUSTRALIA IM KEEN
She smokes well when she is running out of fuel. I NEVER had problems with water in the fuel. And yes, she will dock just like that!! Good luck guys. So pleased you have her.
Evan! Happy to hear from you! Excited to show you our progress soon! She’s lovely and will live a full new life again soon. Thank you sir!
You two are naturals. I’ve never seen such natural born sailors.
Lmfao
Amazing! I would have had a hard time keeping myself from saying “I’ll TAKE IT!” As I first saw it walking down the dock! Yea she needs work but she’s a jewel! Work can be big but work can be done! Wish I was closer to give you a hand! Good luck and cheering you on from my own restoration projects! What a great boat!
Scammers make RUclips go.
Finally a sailing channel with some real people! Keep it up! Great first video very well thought out.
Try Sam Holmes
Ok you 2 are pretty fun people and I hope to see much much more of this boat. The old leaky tikis are just amazing boats. Stunning when they're done up. Keep the vids coming.
I’ve just bought 3 old classic vintage boats, oldest built in 1913 and the youngest in the 60’s. I’ve my eye on a few more with a short/long term dream of a parade of sail/maritime museum/community rejstoration boatyard/sail training school/Matitime industry promotion which will be crewed by voluntary labour and supported by lovers of all things marine, craftsmanship, people power and a shared love of and dedication to all fellow humans! I am confident that this is a good project because there are lots of people out there that just love all things marine, boats and community spirit. I feel positive about the boats and hopefully positively confident in the people’s sharing of the dream! SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.
Best wishes to this brave and hopefully seaworthy project. You will love the voyage of discovery ahead! These types of projects are fantastic not just because they evolve around beautiful boats and craftsmanship but also because they are about recycle, repair, reuse and the appreciation of the world’s limited supply of precious resources and human skill and artistic endeavour that created these things of beauty and also planet friendly modes of travel and exploration! Sailboats are one of if not the only things that man creates that actually improve and compliments the appearance of our seas and planet! SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland
Courageous and crazy, ......but oh so fantastic. From Australia.
I never see what is, just what could be. My heart says: Take this boat, & love it, and don't look back!
just found this after it poped up after watching the sailing brothers. im hooked
I'm inspired. Now I have to go and watch "Captain Ron". Haven't seen it in years. 🍻
I watched it last night!
Looks like a Vagabond. Hey to all interested, nobody runs a long inactive boat on the old fuel in the tanks bc it has water from condensation collected as you found. You must flush and scrub the tanks and use only fresh, clean fuel from a new tank if you want to keep going. Im here in my boat with two 60 gallon tanks I filled twenty years ago and who knows how much algae and crap is in that fuel. It needs fully filtered before use and I use only from a new 12 gallon tank just installed. Glad this boat found a great new life!
That's hilarious Barry!!! I said at the same time when I saw that aft cabin itwas the seal of approval!!!!
Formosa built some beautiful boats.. they have that old pirate ship look and feel..the interiors with their carved doors and arched doorways is a thing of beauty.. I love these old boats..hopefully someday I'll have one
As someone who has given away a beloved "yacht" myself, I understand the desire to get into this project boat. I also am realistic. This boat will need not just a lot of elbow grease, not just a lot of hard cold cash. It will need someone who is realistically enamored by the beast itself but knows what questions to ask, how to proceed, and keep up the drive and ambition it will clearly need to bring this beauty back to her true heartbeat. Never give up! I wish youse guys the best!!
Being she's a glass hull, I'd strip the top side back to the joists, sheet it and glass the deck. Then if you want the teck deck look overlay the hardwood on top. But you got a ways to go before figuring out that stuff. Good looking vessel Barry.
Congrats on becoming proud owners of what looks like a diamond in the rough! Looking forward to your upcoming (weekly?) videos! Good luck guys, and salutations from the UK.
On the tour when you walked into the aft cabin I smiled and thought “Ooooh that’s it…game over.” Too romantic. Good luck and best wishes.
Saaweeeeeeeet! She fell into good hands. Do her proud guys. Looking forward to her remake❣❤🐺❤
Captain Ron lives .can't wait for your next episode
You guys make Captain Ron look like a genius! Just kidding all the best!
He is a genius!
You're not nuts it's a beautiful boat. I just got done rebuilding a 1985 Mako with a two-foot hole in the bottom and both stringers we're broken. I've never ever worked on a boat before I work on cars and I know how to work with fiberglass. I did all the repairs fiberglass wiring new stringers and put in some bulkheads. It is a Mako 224 hand-laid glass. I rebuilt the ox66 Yamaha outboard 250 horsepower. We use it every year going down to Florida for lobster season we scuba off the boat. Good luck I will be watching
Those were the days, WHEN. Love the older boats. Enjoy.
Talk about a blessing, congratulations on what will be an even more beautiful vessel when you bring her back to her glory days.
Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
My goodness, what a grand old Lady. Please, please, please document the restoration! What's that old saying? Nothing is more expensive than a free boat lol. Couldn't hit the subscribe button fast enough!
We looked at Perihelion in April '22. Could see it needed lots of work, we didn't have the skills or the friends that you have. I bow to your superiority and wish you fair winds.
Good luck from all us at the VRC who knew Evan for years !!!! SV KiltLifter! VRC
Hello, I don’t normally write comments. “A Free Boat” watching the first minutes of your presentation made it obvious that you know just how much this project will not be free. I won’t list why as you already know. I just wanted to say that time fly’s and even faster the older you get. When circumstance makes your plan seem impossible: be creative, ask for help, learn from others ( mistakes/wins) don’t listen to naysayers, break large scopes into smaller steps, fight for yourself, love ones who love you, and easily said but hard in practice, never give up!
Soon that day will come when leave your home port and follow the path of so many before you.
Like butterflies and the migrating birds, sailors heading south to Panama. The final provisioning of themselves and vessel for the first step out into the pacific blue for the Marqueses’s and beyond.
Best wishes
Bryan
Ugh, wow. Your comment is music to my ears and food for my soul. Thank you!!

Thanks SailorBarry
You in the H2O or on the hard
What’s your story SailorBarry?
I’m boatless at the moment but can jump on and crew on a couple boats. I live in Blackstock Ontario. My parents are getting old and caused be to be there for them. Always something!
Best wishes!
Bryan from Blackstock 🇨🇦
@@bryanbonham448 on land at the moment. My home (a 40 foot wood boat) is at the tail end of a major refit.
And perihelion is still on the hard but we’re hustling to fix that asap.
I work on a 120 foot mega yacht on the hard right now and a 80 foot tallship in the water. Slaving for for boats right now.
@@SailorBarry 👍
That’s a lot of boat projects, sounds like you must be a pro!
Best wishes
Seeing the aft cabin makes me think it would feel like you are stepping back in time, imagining all the incredible places Evan visited while living aboard. Definitely looking forward to more videos.
What a cool piece of history.
Thanks for sharing!
I miss my boat! Just because I watch Tally Ho I am now getting swamped with all of this wonderful life. My Wife and I both miss boatlife. Wish you guys the best. I will be waiting with baited breath. If i was healthy I would love to come help. But if i can help from a distance i will. I can weld anything to anything, literally, you should see my finger.
I am so excited to see this development. What a great story and I enjoy how your showing it. Thanks for the ride.
Me and my boyfriend reckored this back in 1998 and still have all the photos of us inside if you would like to see! Amazing to see it again and that it will be well loved
an adventure is afoot . how exciting
oh wow what a find, cograts thats just how i felt when i brought my boat with 2 feet of very dirty water inside
Best old boat advice I ever got:
"Keep going"
Also, ozone generator + dehumidifier to fumigate the inside / kill all the mold
I love that boat , can't wait to see more !
As the owners of a 1979 Formosa 51 aft cockpit ketch, we gotta say - you go, guys! We refit her in 2007-08, and are refitting her again - 24V bow thruster, new batteries, some deck re-coring and teak trim replacement. Drop me a line if you have any questions.
You guys are great, can't wait to see more
It's obvious why you both fell in love with this gem. I'd do necessary repairs but leave the survivor look 100% intact. She's a queen. What score!
This is so awsome !!
The vessel has beautiful wood work that just needs to be sanded down and pure tung oil to restore. Only replace what's necessary 👍
Hey guys ! Greetings from Japan .My humble advice is live your insanity own it ! This is living ,this is indeed why we came to this world! Go for it ,a million blessings ,shalom ,shalom .
Cheers!😊
Sounds like the beginning of an incredible adventure. The production company of Captain Ron actually bought 3 Formosa 51's. One was a wreck, another housed the film crew and the third was the one most of the scenes were shot in. Also, RUclips "Sailing Miss Lone Star" refurbed a Formosa 51
looks like a great project, it will be a beauty when done. good to see earl on your boat he gave me a hand with my engine install this summer, very nice guy.
I've just bought Captain Ron from watching your video... The docking scene reminds me of parking a Oceanis 38 against the wall, just under Banana Wharf in Hamble marina to an observers comment "Well that was bloody impressive" ;)
I’m 💯 invested from the get go!…GET IT GUYS! Gorgeous boat with bags of potential ya gotta do this …Let’s Go!!!!
what a fine looking boat
Wow, can't wait until the work starts, what a project, what a beautiful boat! Good luck!
The boat is a beauty
Welcome to YT guys. Great opportunity. I’d consider a boat like this too. I’m 2-3 years away from taking a few years off and need to a project boat like this to restore and make my own for the circumnavigation. Good luck guys, look forward to seeing the journey.
Beautiful score!
Very nice of the Previous Owner!
Always, plumb an onboard diesel portible fuel tank to run the engine on initally.
Fuel tanks are always suspect on old boats.
From being able to hold fuel, to contamination.
So inspect well.
But use an alternative fuel source.
As well, a dinghy, A radio(vhf handheld)
A working Anchor, and a cell phone.
Im sailing a 32' Mariner Ketch, 1979 out of Olympia Wa.
I dunno, I've seen Boats in MUCH worse shape than that make spectacular come backs...that being said? This I GOTTA see!
Seen this boat a few times. Godspeed
Your " Home " is a Piece of Art, Authentic, Real, and Yours. Be Proud. I have No Home.
Epic match. Perfect boat. Cape Horn. And Expedition Evans was crazy; you no. Fair winds! Congratulations. Subscribed
"Boat" is not a word,it's an acronym! for "Break out another Thousand!"
She's a work of art in the rough... Beautiful... Good old William Garden...
Definitely both crackeroonies. Went to BC, Vancouver Island and other parts 1968. Love and peace you two. Thanks. Dave
If it floats - - you can FIX it ! ! ! Beautiful Rig ! "The Swabbie "
I've been stuck at the exact same place! The entrance to the river is a big part of the reason I moor in Pont Roberts now! Your lucky no barges were screaming down there!
Best of luck! You know you're in for a lot of work, but you'll have a wonderful SV in the end.
Awesome! Go for it! What a fit for your life! I'll be watching!
yes, yes & yes….. good luck & best wishes !!
Wow, what a beauty! This is not a boat - Its a ship!
Awesome! Where some movies are bases on a true story, you are a true story base on a movie!
Oh my god. Favourite comment ever
I have never been a "I have to have one" fanatic, but will stop what I am doing to watch Captain Ron. I have always loved the ketch rig and for cruising a full keel "Fat Bottom" girl gives a NICE ride. William Garden did an exceptional job with the design of the 50 series. I wish he had laid her out as a ketch gaffer. She would be awesome under top sails, stay, flying jib... I mean, hell, strip the births and fly the fart sacks too. With a 15' beam and nearly 7 tons ballast you would have to work really hard to knock her down. Can't wait to see her back in shape. The Islands are calling.
Wow, what an opportunity. Good luck guys!!!!
No matter where you go.
.. there you are
Good luck 👍
if yall keep up the content youve got a one way ticket to youtube succes, good luck yall!
I’m glad you are experienced sailors and aren’t going into this blind, but few things are more expensive than a free boat.
Thanks for sharing. I think you guys are as mad as a box of frogs😁. As you already know boats never stop yielding surprises. I'm sure you won't be put off, it's a lovely boat and so kind of the owner to give it to you.
I'll keep a look out for updates on the boat.
Fun! I can't wait to see what you do with her. She's a beautiful vessel.
Yous can do it! Put your mind heart and body in it! Your rewards will be full of love joy and happiness! Make sure yous Bless that boat! It will in return take good care of yous! God Bless and good luck! Can't wait for the end results! Yous got this!
Go for it! The price is right!
Yes I will be following your progress. Nice !! SHE IS A FINE SHIP. Give her TLC. and she will route you around the world. Here's Fair Winds & Following Seas!!!!
Good find and good luck. I think you two will be just fine and I think you know what your in for over the next couple of years but she will be a great vessel. May the spirit of Captain Ron be with you. 🐟 😁
Wow serious score!! We would take that boat in half a heartbeat. Just found your channel but we will be following this story. Congratulations 🎊
Thanks for inviting us along ...
Wow...a Formosa. Glad I found you today. Gonna be epic.
She’s an absolute beauty! Lots of work ahead, but it’ll be well worth it. Looking forward to seeing more!
Really enjoyed coming along…you guys have the most important ingredient….a good attitude and humor….great boat…lots of fun, frustration and accomplishment ahead …steady as she goes…stay safe…
Yep I dig the show
