  • The Boat Geeks #7 - Matt Steverson (Shipwright, Rebuilding Duracell)
    Recorded 2.19.24
Rebuilding a legendary Open 60 race boat requires many skills, a lot of perseverance, and for husband and wife Matt and Janneke, a leap of faith.
Recorded aboard their floating studio in Port Townsend, WA, in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, your hosts Darren and Daeron take another deep dive into the world of boating.
This episode: The Boat Geeks meet one half of The Duracell Project. From Matt's beginning as a racer (and as D&D surprisingly discover, a 1st place winning racer!) to a liveaboard cruiser, his boat building and maintenance skills are front and center as they transform the legendary around-the-world race boat known as Duracell into a "hot cruising boat." Matt completely stripped the boat to a bare hull, and together with some family and friends they are totally rebuilding her. Meanwhile, Janneke has made a series of wonderfully entertaining and educational videos documenting the work being done, taking their RUclips channel to incredible heights.

The cherry on top is their cat LaPaz, I was surprised she wasn’t mentioned, the best cat inspector on the planet!

You left out the most important cast member of his channel, and its "The Inspector" kitty that everyone is here for. 😂

Because of Matt you 'geeks' popped up in my suggested video timeline. Great channel, great voices, very nice to listen to. I am looking forward to the interviews you guys are going to have with Sailing Magic Carpet II and Steve from Acorn to Arabella!

Enjoyed that - Matt is doing an exceptional job and is very relatable. Now you just have to get Leo Goldie (Tally Ho), on the show, before he disappears on the ocean blue.

    One of my newest concerns!!!!
With all boat construction design Cruisers ect:
FIREs - Batteries! Batteries have changed!!
    They work way better!
BUT!!! They catch on fire a lot easier!!!
Fire and boat is about as bad a horror story that one can think of.
Saw one Catamaran that had a flooding battery compartment? That looked interesting?
I’d like to see many of these Marine RUclipsrs talk about it with solutions and remind Cruisers think about this scenario!
A fire at sea is unthinkable
