Great video, Daniel! I loved getting to see parts of my life from your unique perspective. Thank you soo much for documenting my boat projects, journey & struggles! It HAS been an isolating experience on my own and as the only woman in this boatyard for the past year (that I've seen). I really hope this video inspires more women out there to go it on their own, alone and make friends along the way (I really want some solo girl buddy boat friends 😊) Can't wait to see what adventures you get up to next!!!
Hey you're so welcome Nicole! I had a blast, and really enjoyed collaborating with you. You have true grit and in this process have built strong character for yourself. I can't wait to see what adventure YOU get into next!
I dig it! Hello from a fellow female sailor…love Bristol’s! My sailboat obsessions were: Pearson Vanguard, southern cross, island packet, norsea 27 & now a Slocum 43 down in MX ;) Just subscribed to ya!!
At 65, female, I built my own house. The funniest thing was people’s reactions. Took me 1.5 years while living in my van…It was so fun. Congratulations Nicole…women can do anything if they want and are willing. Apparently a lot of sailors are sailing 27’ boats around the world. Wind Hippie Sailing, there are several. No one expects women doing this work because not many women do this work. I also do mechanics and I always get weird reactions. People eventually respect you for it. Nicole sounds like a very experienced sailor.
Well done. Truth is many people of all ages and gender are doing the most amazing things and we never get to hear of it. They don't know how to film and edit and if they try it's very difficult to get noticed on an already over-cluttered yoututbe. Just do it for yourself, it's not important for others to see it, it's a great feeling for you to know that you can.
Way to go Nicole,. I am also a solo female captain of a sailboat. The love of sailing is something you can't explain. Exploring new places and enjoying the journey of getting there is part of the adventure. It's wonderful to see other women bravely stepping out on their own without waiting for someone to join their dream. 🤗💖⛵🌅🐬🏝️🐕 S/V Cork~Texas ⛵🌎🙂
I did 13 years after moving off my parents' boat we lived on as a child through teen years. However my other half hates the ocean so I joined military but trying to get back is the hardest adventure yet. One day I tell my self since my kids are adults.
N̈icole is a very inspiring young lady, I've been watching her vlogs for some time she has been through a lot in her life but manages to have a beautiful smile. She deserves the best.
Yup! I rescued a 22' Southcoast about two days away from being chewed up at the dump, thinking it would be a lot less expensive than buying one. It most probably was not. Five years in and it's just going out since I got her floating again for the second time next week. It will be another year before her sails go up.
Nicole is amazing and has the right attitude, not just for sailing and maintaining a boat but for life in general. And, Dan you are a fantastic presenter. Better than 90% of the people in mainstream media.
I am a single hander woman with a boat in Mexico. I am new to this and am doing most of my own work and experiencing many of the same things. I am considerably older so this is a new adventure for me.
I've been watching her videos since her last boat. Many props to the work she has done. Good looking out spotlighting her. She deserves much cred. Dan, you rock as well.
Same here. Dan and Nicole demonstrate the warmth and support the sailing community has. It is a common theme on the sailing channels I regularly watch. Its my dream to experience it one day. Fair winds all!
I am a woman fixing to be 60 I built my own house, built my own barn, built my own fences, repair my own vehicles, n tractor. I refit in my own sailboat. We’re out there we’re just now obviously not where you are.
I've been watching Nicole's channel for a while now. She never fails to amaze me. It's been a struggle from start to finish, she's on her own, does everything on her own, hits seemingly insurmountable hurdles, has a little cry, pulls herself together, and moves on. She is relentless. When she eventually sets off on her "new old" boat, I fervently hope she will be able to "relax" and enjoy the lifestyle she's struggling so hard for to achieve. In fact I am a little mystified she doesn't have more followers (yet), she's definitely one of the more personable channels out there.
Amazing, I started sailing early in life on Uncle John's 37ft Crocker schooner. She was built by Ted McIntosh in Dover, NH as a family project. I was photographed in diapers playing in mahogany planning shavings as we faired her topsides. Then on to racing at the age of 7 in turnabouts. Graduate of Maine Maritime Academy where I raced collegiately. Employed in the US Merchant Marine Service for 35 years I spent countless months in both US Shipyards and Foreign, mostly Singapore and Korean, yet Dubai and Cape Town. Nicole demonstrates, throughout her channel a can do attitude, patients, and aptitude to get her rebuild process done. We all are very grateful for her channel and the knowledge received by her. This is an epic journey we all can enjoy. Thank you Daniel for including us on her extensive refit. The boat of Artha came out perfect.
I have been following Nicole for a while; she is a remarkable young woman. As for your question about other young women doing their own work - I've seen a far amount of women HELPING their mates work on boats, including my daughter who's spent the last three years helping rebuild a 52er, but I have never seen a woman doing nearly all of the work by themselves. By the way, I have a friend who finished out a BC 28 from a hull/deck kit and sailed it from Seattle to the tip of South America and back over a two year period. They are very seaworthy and good sailing boats but rather tight inside for big people. This boat, despite being in poor shape when she bought it, will be a huge upgrade over her old boat.
Absolutely love this!! I grew up on sailboats since a baby…and women are rare in this life style! Thanks for the video! ❤❤ I’ve got my “forever” boat now down in Mexico 😊 Currently redoing her chainplates from scratch! Cheers to Nicole!!
Hello Nicole What an amazing lady you are ! I was very impressed by your work over the past year in rebuilding your Bristol Cutter. Well done 😀👍 Best wishes Ric
This young lady is such an inspiration, surreal... amazing drive and commitment to her goal.I have to admire this kind of human beings. Wishing you fair seas and winds along your way Nicole. All the best in the future...
Cool that Holly Martin (Wind Hippie) inspired Nicole. I have been following Holly since she started her channel and she is definitely inspiring. Nicole, you're in good company.
Wow this was fascinating! I'm 73 and have never sailed but love the ocean! I'll be a sailor in my next life or a naval architect, haha! Thanks so much Daniel for introducing me/us to Nicole which really blew my mind! I love to see people do DIY projects like she is doing with her boat. I love seeing people follow their dreams whatever the difficulties! Thanks guys for this great lesson in living ! 🌿
hey dan im 15 and have found a real interest in sailing i found your channel some time ago and like the only thing i can think about is sailing i would love to sail with you or learn from you in the future i think i finally found a goal to set and your videos have been a huge inspiration.
I am doing a full refit of Jeanneau Sangria, an Edel-3, and a prototype 38 feet, for a project called Erdissol (coming up). Alone, for the time being, in Portugal and France. Just to say, there are women around, doing it, and sailing solo - it's the willingness to get it done, know fully the boat, and learn to be self-sufficient. Great Nicole!!
Thank you so much for this video, Dan! I have subscribed and im super excited to go on her adventure with her! I am not solo, but my experiences are similar. I am a bit more hands on on the boat while my man makes money the old fashioned way. It means a lot to see another woman excelling. I love all your videos. But, these ones, where you introduce us to other sailors and their boats, are swiftly becoming my favorites. Appreciate you!
.. wow..wow..wow...I admire this young woman for her passion and drive for this amazing project. I'm already having trouble getting new paint on the walls in my apartment... All the best to her and nice and safe trips on this beautiful boat ..
So true when she talked about not being sure she could do it. She said she tries and fails and tries again and eventually she gets it. I know every boat project I’ve done seems to take me three times before I get it right!
my favorite video yet. I was a peace corps volunteer in the DR and it truly is an amazing country. I've had the parasites, Dengue, chikenguna. I love the dominican dogs.. they truly are a breed of their own
Awesomeness at its finest. My wife likes the fact that she takes care of the dogs. That model of boat was well known from the Pardey's. If you do not know them, just google the name.
It's awesome to see a young lady be so capable of doing her own work, I too as a young woman sailor did all my own work on my 38 choey lee sailboat too. I am in my 60s now and yes I still do 80% of my own work. But bottom paint jobs has been passed on to boat yard labor. Comes a time when watching is fine. Do it as long as you can!! Remember the rewards... Sailing ⛵️ fairwinds
Smart girl. I have been a fan for some time but have learned more about her from this video. Now I just want to sail with her I need the education because "sailing" is new to me. That bit about the hull flexing.. same goes for lining up your prop shaft. It should be done while floating.
Loving every bit here, the girl, the boat, the project, can't wait to see the duo sailing around (I mean the BCC & Nicole). Oh and the interview was really nice. And there was hints of what came along next 😅
Another great video Dan. I always learn something. I think Nicole will be fine as a solo sailor, love her tenacity and work ethic. I’m going to subscribe to her channel and look forward to seeing her pics of Greece. Cheers
Great work girl, it will all be worth it...... Bristols are a very sought after boat, amazingly sea worthy. Once restored would be worth a lot of money... great to see them all over the world.
Hi guys, wow what a talented lady Nicole is absolutely wonderful I take my hat off to her , I really admire how much work she’s done on this boat and living in this boat yard incredible keep up the good work. Really enjoyed the video Cliff from Australia.
Always nice to see women with this amount of bravery and desires. Nice work. Boat looks better than you give credit for. Sure it looks nice bc of your labor but really looks good. Cant wait to see you sailing this boat.
Been there , done that.....Grew up in boatyards... Have known single, or otherwise women live on run and repair power and sail boats.... Actually Nicole, is lucky to be ale to have the freedom etc. to actually "work" on her boat, and get all the patron support benefit's etc. to pay for it all.. Smart girl... Luperon is one of the best places to be left alone to do whatever you want with your boat ..(unless they are stealing parts off it..) . Parts and stuff may be hard to get.. But it' possible.... You know, Victoria's daughter did all that a while back.. Bruce is a Good Man...
I bet her stuff will be very educational. It's nice to see a woman being real and acting like a serious person on youtube without all the clickbait nonsense.
Kiana Weltzien has rebuilt her own Wharram Pahi 42 and has solo sailed across the Atlantic multi times. You should interview her as well. I believe she's in the Brasil area at the moment? Her channels are kiana weltzien and Women & the Wind
She seems to have the same can do free spirit that "Wind Hippie" has, and that girl has sailed over halfway around the world on her own. I wish her the best and will definitely check her channel out.
Ahoy Dan! It was good to see you & the Chickadoo who can do. The saying: "i've put my Heart & Soul into it", seems to apply to her right? There's a little *Dynamo* who built a boat with her longtime squeeze, with both of them recently hauling their boat out & doing needed maintenance on it. Between her & Garrett, they've accomplished a lot, with trials & tribulations handled with aplomb. 🙏🦉
Wonderful work. Wow. My wife and I did similar projects together. And that’s a lot of work with 2 people. We cruised for 26 yrs. Some good choices there. Looks like the windlass is a Simpson Lawrence 555. Slow but dependable. Love composing heads. And a Spade anchor would be an excellent choice. Better than Rockna.
if i was a hundred years younger i would love to learn sailing/boat work from this young woman. great interview and great subject. wind hippie is also a very talented young woman sailor.
Been subscribed to "Sailing Artha" for awhile. Nicole is a BEAST!!! She has more guts and No Quit in her little toe than any ten people combined. So glad I found this story.
I was born in Ft. Pierce, Rad (Inspired!) Thanks for sharing your story! Recently watch the movie Women of the Sea a few days ago and this video is great view on how much has changed over the last century. Working to join y'all out there for the bluewater adventures one day! Thank you both! Peace - J
To answer your question, you may need to visit more boatyards. I suggest White Spot Pirates to see a women do everything on her boat. That said, Nicole is awesome!
Very well done, Dan. I'm now watching and enjoying your videos. I appreciate the way you explained things or let Nicole explain things so a novice would understand the terminology. I think the main reason you don't see women doing such extensive work on boats is because of some very subtle currents in our society that establish a sort of false premise that women are not capable with tools and construction in general. That's "guy stuff" and things like sewing or cooking are "girl stuff," which is more ridiculous than it sounds. I think it possible society evolved like that as a way for men to keep women by keeping them dependent. As a man, I think it is better for the woman to be completely free and independent so the only reason she stays is because she wants to. A man with his ego in balance can handle that and a man who has not got his ego in balance has a hard time with such a lady. I had over 40 years in the construction business and encountered very few women in the construction trades. There is the physical aspect of doing certain things, but there are also ways of mitigating the need for brute strength by being creative and calm while applying basic physics such as employing a lever or wheel. I think many guys from an early age learn more about the basics of how things are constructed and can "see" certain things that escape someone (guys or gals) else. Women are obviously fully capable of doing a total refit like Nicole is doing. The good news is, our society is changing for the better as such stereotypes crumble, thanks to ladies like Nicole. I have witnessed a lot of positive change for women since the 60s and society's growing acceptance of women fully participating in all aspects of life and being more able to pursue and achieve their dreams. This change always takes too damned long and it can seem as if no progress is being made. We need to encourage and celebrate positive change to make our society better. One thing I've found over the years that helps is understanding our society is better off when it is fully integrated. Then we take maximum advantage by having the input from different perspectives provided by women and various racial, sexual, ethnic or religious minorities that have previously been blocked. More good news is found in the sensitivity so many of our young people have toward bigotry. I am proud of them and am fully confident they will make tremendous strides and the day will come when single women doing total refits in boat yards will be common.
I am a girl me and my wife are currently doing the loop. Quite often people are surprised to see 2 lesbian sailors. With that said everybody has been quite nice and friendly. It's rather wonderful to see her refitting her boat. :-) :-)
Yes, it's true, you don't see that often. But the sailing community is incredibly open and welcoming to everyone. If you were from North Korea, other sailors would be shocked & surprised......... and then invite you up onto their boat for some snacks and chat you up about the sailing conditions above the 38 parallel! Hahaha I wish I could test this, but I'm 99% sure that's how it'd go. :)
She is amazing !! Got a subscribe from me as well as you dan !! Thats my dream your living it !! That go for it attitude is inspiring ...wish i was as young as you guys ..live your life to the fullest and dont waste it like me !!!
OMG! Do you guys know Harold on the 70’ schooner named Cassie? Harold is a friend of mine. He really DIY’d Cassie. He’s in Carriacou now helping get boats out of the mangroves after Beryl.
Dom Republic. Awesome because in the US boat faciities are so inflated boats are being given away, why not just get a free boat from California in a yard foreclosure. Theyre everywhere and abandoned all over Washington state waters. Nice boat...Great story!
Dan, outstanding as always love the channel, I wish I had known of this girl's story I would have added her story to my book Wake Up Neo! The Working Man's A Sucker!" much like you always state that in 20 years we will regret what we haven't done more than what we have, I have a similar look at life "Time is your greatest commodity, trade in the now!" ⛵ Fair Winds Everyone!
Wow! great project, it must be quite the roller coaster trying to get though things down in the DR. I look fwd to following along, and wish you all the best! Dengue sure doesn’t help, I got it while anchored in suva, no ac aboard that boat at that time, nasty…
Coppercoat is said to do 10 years, there is another antifouling that I found with not really any mention at all that's speedcoat-49 a hydrophobic antifoul said to increase boat performance in speed and reduce water drag.
She's not the only woman that has refined and redone a monohull I did a trymaran. I grew up with a sailing family lived on one for 13 years. Sailed after I moved on but moved ashore as my other halted hated the ocean. Trying to get back has been the hardest path.
Great video, Daniel! I loved getting to see parts of my life from your unique perspective. Thank you soo much for documenting my boat projects, journey & struggles! This is the chick that nursed you back to life from fever . Iv watched her channel a while now ,she has main character vibes that I adore 😊
The very same. Main character vibes indeed.
I am a big fan of Nicole! She has such a wonderful can do attitude! The world would be a cooler place with more people like her.
Nicole, your journey, work ethic, and skills are simply amazing. As a fellow greek sailor, carry on and never give up on your dream.
She’s a keeper

Another great video Dan. I always learn something. I think Nicole will be fine as a solo sailor, love her tenacity and work ethic. I’m going to subscribe to her channel and look forward to seeing her pics of Greece. Cheers
Cheers buddy! :)
Thank you so much!
Congratulations - you are an amazing sailor and champion, all the best with this wonderful project. Inspirational !
What a wonderful
Adventure to have. I really enjoyed the story ... And i didn't even miss the normal sailing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video, will share with my daughters!
Awesome! Thank you!
Always nice to see women with this amount of bravery and desires. Nice work. Boat looks better than you give credit for. Sure it looks nice bc of your labor but really looks good.
Cant wait to see you sailing this boat.
That's well said. Thank you.
Came here from Artha, Nicole is inspiring. Thanks for this interview.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent interview! Subscribed to both of you. That's one way above average human, intelligent, beautiful, resilient, competent.
Thanks soo much! Too true. 😀
I bet her stuff will be very educational. It's nice to see a woman being real and acting like a serious person on youtube without all the clickbait nonsense.
Nicole is incredibly genuine on her channel. Check out her videos.
Great video, loves the story and yr shared boatyard pains. Def will follow her channel.
Thank you!😊
Kiana Weltzien has rebuilt her own Wharram Pahi 42 and has solo sailed across the Atlantic multi times. You should interview her as well. I believe she's in the Brasil area at the moment? Her channels are kiana weltzien and Women & the Wind
Yes , Kiara is also amazing. Her boat is not a Pahi. It is a Narai mk1, 40 ft classic Wharram range design.
@@milanmarinkovic3016 Youre right. Cheers!
If our paths cross I'd love to. I'm always interested in talking to sailors who've accomplish/strived that much!
What an inspiration. Great vid Dan, thanks.
You said it all in Dengue fever ...aka breakbone fever...
Respect to her the other one I know is a Wharram owner .
Exactly! She's a trooper through and through.
She reminds me of Wind hippy.
Another woman doing it all one her own, but already in the South Pacific.
Cheers buddy! :)
She seems to have the same can do free spirit that "Wind Hippie" has, and that girl has sailed over halfway around the world on her own. I wish her the best and will definitely check her channel out.
Cheers buddy! :)
She can teach us - You go girl!
What a great woman, just love her for the right resonans 😊
Couldn't agree more!
Great episode! Very nice!
🙏🦉
Cheers 🍻
Wonderful work. Wow. My wife and I did similar projects together. And that’s a lot of work with 2 people. We cruised for 26 yrs. Some good choices there. Looks like the windlass is a Simpson Lawrence 555. Slow but dependable. Love composing heads. And a Spade anchor would be an excellent choice. Better than Rockna.
if i was a hundred years younger i would love to learn sailing/boat work from this young woman. great interview and great subject. wind hippie is also a very talented young woman sailor.
Our pleasure!
Nicole has some real positive energy!
She has done an amazing job
Been subscribed to "Sailing Artha" for awhile. Nicole is a BEAST!!! She has more guts and No Quit in her little toe than any ten people combined. So glad I found this story.
Cheers buddy! :)
I love it when people realize that they can fail, but still succed when they keep trying.
Cheers buddy! :)
I hope you get it in the water and have a great time ⛵️🇨🇦
she is amazing!!!. I love the grit.... the drive!
For grinding in protective suits there are welders vests that you connect to an air compressor that will keep you kind of cool about $70.
your doin a great job against the odds patience is your best virtue
Incredible! A women doing things for herself!!
Wind Hippy is great. Also, check out White Spot Pirates. She’s been on her boat for a decade and does everything in some remote and austere places.
I love her channel. She's legit and has a while story.
What a beauty! I wounder why shechose this life! Breath of fresh air!
I was born in Ft. Pierce, Rad (Inspired!) Thanks for sharing your story! Recently watch the movie Women of the Sea a few days ago and this video is great view on how much has changed over the last century. Working to join y'all out there for the bluewater adventures one day! Thank you both! Peace - J
That's great! Hope to see you out here soon.
What an incredible young woman. She won’t be single for long!
How right you are. :)
This young lady knows how to kick some ass ! Well done !!
Proud to be one of Nicole's patreons :)
Thank you!!
You're the best!
My name is Lydia, and I do all of my own work, on my sailboat, too.
Wind Hippie must be proud of you Nicole! ❤
Love a Bristol. Congrats on such a classic beauty.
Cheers buddy.
Brave woman, God Bless her, and your interview skills are amazing.
Thanks for listening
Wow! great project, it must be quite the roller coaster trying to get though things down in the DR.
I'm well aware. Please read the second paragraph of the video description. Good luck getting back out on the ocean.
"I just float to the top like a rubber ducky"... Hilarious!
