Tremendously helpful in shaping the Plexi tone!! Thanks for putting in the work to find the sound, make the video, and most importantly - sharing your settings! Your Mark V lesson is actually helping me to understand the interactive nature of the EQ settings, volume and gain! Outstanding video! Thanks again!
For year's I've been using edge mode for plexi like sounds. It always sounded to me it was closer than my mini jubilee could get. But I never really played a real plexi. Now you just proved my ears were right. Mark V really can get most tones close enough that you will not miss other amps. It's just not so easy to dial.
Appreciate you Euge. You just saved me from having to buy a Plexi. I have never played a Plexi so I don't know how to dial in the sound. This video is perfect.
EUGE, Metallica Ride the Lightning used G12-65 speakers which Kirt used a TS9 tube screamer but James used an orange ibanez OD850 or stacked with a TS9. They also used the ADA preamp but you should make a video lesson about this because they were trying to make a marshall plexi get that mesa boogie sound.
Great video, as always mate; the plexi still has that sparkle on top. For anyone wanting a plexi tone the synergy Plexi preamp is a very nice alternative and worth considering.
i feel the recording has a little bit fluffy lows... both sound close, but i believe the plexi has more organic sound and you can feel that when you hit the string with the pick. There is no other amp that can give you that feedback. You can try to replicate the sound of one or another amp with Eq or post EQ if you like, but the feeling when you hit the string is unique in the plexi...
I agree my mk3 is loose on the bottom end and fizzy on the high freqs got a plexi drve pedal sounds incredible. But to a trained 👂 Marshall nailed the frequency landscape as far as OD channel. So the boogie is EB stereo volume for clean. Nice equipment n monster tone as always Euge.👍
do it man. mark V changed everything for me. played a rectifier mostly before that and the tone possibilities with the mark V are crazy. especially the cleans 🔥
Plexi hands down....that sag squish bite that only a Plexi does......preamp gain doesn't compare. My opinion.... If you love Plexi sound, it's easy to identify it. lol Euge, my Soldanos are gathering dust since I acquired a couple Germinos
With humbuckers I usually like the bass around 3 or to tighten things up. Still has plenty of low end especially when the power amp is cranked. On my old Mark III I had the pre bass 2 or less because any higher would get woofy, especially at lower tunings but the graphic eq I’d have the bass boosted.
As always it comes back to the power amp tubes... so.. big ask,.. could you get the boogie set up with el34's. I get the same issue with mine, its always close, but I always go back to the marshall in my mind.. something about marshalls. Maybe I should try el34s too! Guessed right! ;-) Txs
The mesa sounded really close! But the "openness" and the clarity pf the Plexi is easy to spot. But I didn't think the Mesa could be that close honestly... great vid as always! And Elton John's wife hahahah!
@@MoreMeRecording if the switches on Ch 2 are accurate it sure looks like 90W mode and with the output at noon holy moly or maybe as EV puts it "So Yea!!!" :)
Cool thanks man. I just got my Mark V two weeks ago. And your video really sold me on that amp. I have a dual rectifier which I love, but that Mark V really is mind blowing on what it all can do. So I appreciate you sharing knowledge brother !
In your opinion, what to do about damping the shrill in the plexiglass. By that I mean when I play through my plexiglass, there is a slight twang for better words.
It looks whatever you do is high end, top of the shelf. I mean that it shouldn't sound like Marshall, but it would be unique, big ,3D, and full of air. Thank you.
I recently read a forum post someone had where they compare the V to the VII. Totally a worthless review for many reasons, but his comment on Tweed and Edge was icepicky. I argued his statement for a tiny bit, but I probably shoulld have linked this video to him. The Mark V is an awesome amp. I don't care what channel or mode its awesome.
I noticed that instantly and it doesn't sound good, regardless of the amp... Very flubby and fuzzy, as if slamming a HM2 or Rat pedal too hard in the amp or something...
Absolutely. I’ve done a few albums with real amps into reactive load with Jens Bogren’s IRs which I still do every now & then. But the reactive load and IRs have to be really good to get the same vibe & sound than with mic’d real cabs 👌. Real deal is always a real deal 💪.
@@EugeValovirta230V sorry another question, any tips on how I can make my guitars sound better when using amp sims? I’m using a Scarlett 3rd gen interface
If you sound good without anything (just the guitar) you’ll sound good no matter the gear. At least I do 😎. And that’s the way I mostly play and practise ’cos it works 👌.
I could tell...the Mesa just has a hollowness in certain frequencies that the Marshall fills out. (That channel on the V is REALLY kinda wonky and doesnt make a TON of sense...they took the crunch....REALLY upped the highs on the edge and the lows on the Mark 1...and thats it..the only difference is one cap per channel....magik huh?)...I own the V and it is kinda of an easy shortcut to certain sounds (like Santana is Mark 1 with all controls at noon...straight up black magic woman tone)...and I hate the overt sag of the V when used that way....not sagged so much as STARVED for power.
Let your help so bad. The only thing saving my life at this moment is trying to play guitar few tunes. I'm very stuck right now I need help I need an amplifier. Doesn't sound very good (for this kind of riffing at least) imo. Not sure what you did or if maybe i's sounded alright in the room and something was messed up on the recorded tone only.
Wow, I got them backwards when first listening, and I OWN a Mark V! 😂 Surprised to hear how much tighter the Plexi was than the much more modern Mark V. Both sound great though, and the Mark V is endlessly tweak-able.
There is WAY too much gain on that sound to make a usefull comparison. I find it totally impossible to make my MK5 sound anything remotely like a Marshall. Channel 2 is useless without the EQ engaged. You must roll off the bottom end on the channel eq because the Boogie is soooo way bottom heavy. If you don't, any random bass player you might play with will hurl abuse at you untill you do. What is true is trying to get that top end bite is totally impossible on Ch2 of a Mk 5.
This is one of the most important videos on youtube. Every child in school should be made to watch this every day
Never even thought about the boogie becoming a plexi 🤘🏻 Great video mate❗️
Thanks!
Passive pickups, plexi and greenbacks, that's just perfect. 1:42 When I heard that chord I just thought "plexi!"
Yes 💪😎

Thanks! Much appreciated 🙏.
Sounds great! I think of my Mesa Nomad the same way-the knobs are the overdrive control and the sliders are the EQ
Yeah!
It would make sense on Ch1 since the tone stack is pre-gain on that channel but Ch2 and Ch3 have their tone stacks post gain.

Thanks! Yep 😎.
That was great! Now to try those settings on my Mark IV…
Thanks!
Sounds great, never knew the mark v could sound so close to a plexi! Will you ever try the mark vii?
Thanks! If I get my hands on one someday then of course.
Heh, just noticed that pop-up where you say the exact thing i was wondering, that the boogie is missing some of that plexi bite :)
👌😎

I know you're more of an 800 man, but for me, the Plexi is where it is at. And you've got the Mesa sounding very close indeed to a Plexi.

[ut EL-34's into the Mesa and you'll get even closer
Thank you !
🙏🤟
Am i hearing this right?, the plexi seems to have more high frequency bite, more treble/presence. I thought it'd be just the opposite?
Yes that’s the classic British Plexi bite 👌.
What power mode are you using, 90 or 45?
I'm going to guess 90 as it was the tighter / crisper sound that made it easier to spot from the lower watt amp I reckon but obviously just a guess.
@@MoreMeRecording if the switches on Ch 2 are accurate it sure looks like 90W mode and with the output at noon holy moly or maybe as EV puts it "So Yea!!!" :)
I believe I said that in the video but if not: 90

@@EugeValovirta230V indeed you did!!! BTW IMHO those greenbacks really are a major contributor to that stellar overall tone.

That’s the beaty of it 👌. If you don’t like that Plexi twang maybe it’s not the right amp for you 🤷♂️.
thanks
🙏
Great. Can you make MessaBoogie sound in its own fashion to sound as big as Plexi.???!!!
Not sure what you mean.

Fantastico !

Edge is icepicky through v30s and if you don't have the channel master cranked up.
Two great amps.🤘
Yes.
This is pretty great, but now I'm wondering how close the Mark V can get to the Bad Boy!
😎🤟. I guess I need to figure it out one day 😎.
Is that clipping or something on the low end when you're muting?
I was cranking the amps so it’s just the power tubes begging for mercy 😁.
@Euge Valovirta lol yeah, that'll do it!
I noticed that instantly and it doesn't sound good, regardless of the amp... Very flubby and fuzzy, as if slamming a HM2 or Rat pedal too hard in the amp or something...
Boogie has more fullness and beef in the tone
I will Like to own a real amp. Do you think a hybrid solution like a real amp with a load box has better feel than amp plugins? Can’t use cabs to loud
Absolutely. I’ve done a few albums with real amps into reactive load with Jens Bogren’s IRs which I still do every now & then. But the reactive load and IRs have to be really good to get the same vibe & sound than with mic’d real cabs 👌.
