The GROOVIEST guitar piece EVER written. His playing on this particular song leaves me speechless every damn time. SRV forever!!!
Those notes are just so absolutely beautifully fat and robust and thick as Texas mud!!
He was known for using unbelievably large string guages.
He used a set in which, the high string is thicker than the high string in a standard set of acoustic guitar strings. A standard acoustic high string is 0.012 and the high string he used was 0.013. FYI Strings are measured in inches here in the US.
His string gauges were .013, .015, .019, .032, .042, .056. The B and G were 11 or 12s but the rest were super heavy 13 gauge

Still the greatest rock/blues concert ever recorded and one of Stevie's greatest nights of his career. How lucky we are they had a pro shot crew filming. Goosebumps every time.

This entire El Macambo performance is astounding. The rise of a Star. Anyone who has learned to play guitar has to marvel at how easy Stevie made it look.
Talents like this should just be forbidden to travel at all. Who wants to see them, should have to come to their palace.
Lets take a moment to appreciate the dynamic drumming sytle of Chris Layton.
I will always regret not seeing this man in concert. RIP Stevie.
I was fortunate to see him play five times while living in Michigan. Shows you how much he toured in just one state. This concert does a great job of capturing the atmosphere of his performance.

"Genius" is a much overused word these days. Doesn't matter. Stevie Ray was a guitar genius. There were and are others just as technically proficient, but nobody puts as much feeling into each note as he did. The GOAT, IMO.
Sometimes he looked like he was holding some back in fear of vaporizing his guitar. Still, it smoked afterwards.
He had a great voice also, dont forget that.

He was definitely a guitar genius and has to be top 3 on nearly every list. Easy. I have him just behind Hendrix. Personally, my two favorites are SRV and Randy Rhoads.

I remember when SRV died. I cried. I was so shocked. I used to listen to him all the time . Still hard to believe .. I have NEVER stopped LISTENING ! All these years later he remains one of my all time favorites.

Reading youtube comments for more than a decade I noticed a lot of people get impressed by rock band vocalists who are able to sing and play basic power chord riffs at the same time...
I gotta say that what SRV was doing back then is far more impressive, all those string skips, this guy had his eyes closed for the entire duration of the song, even the solo. You can't get any more comfortable with the fretboard than this.

I saw him live in Houston. Amazing and just as good or better live. He was one of the best and will be remembered for getting clean and sober while being a guitar genius. He makes it look so easy. Thank you for posting these.

My brother is and always will be a SRV fan and when Stevie Ray passed away I had no idea what we lost I would be 5 years old dancing around the house listening to the music that my brother played and they did not come out of his room for two weeks after he passed away from the helicopter accident it was really something what an amazing artist now that I'm old enough to understand and appreciate his music absolutely amazing not only in his talent but also in his perseverance to overcome his addiction and his genuineness as a person great guy all the way around

Me and my brother played at the El Mocambo around 1988. I played bass and my brother played electric guitar. We used a pre programmed drum machine which was a Rolland 707. Our music was like jazz fusion rock. Needless to say the music didnt go over well with the rock blues crowd. At the end a blind drummer joined us on stage and saved the night. Anyways its pretty cool to say you played on the same stage as Stevie Ray Vaughn !

The tone and licks he had up his sleeve were the best from every blues artist you can think of. He was a big fan of Hendrix and that comes through in his playing too yet he said his favourite guitar player was his brother Jimmie. Classy guy for sure.

I saw him at Campbell Hall at UC Santa Barbara in the 80s. My big brother took me. Now he's gone and so is SRV.
So honored I got to see him in the 80s he opened up for Robert Plant here in Rochester New York unbelievable show

Had el mocambo on VHS in mid 90s in 6th grade... Used to watch it daily. 9th grade lent it to a friend who kept it. This was rhe days of borrowin skateboard vhs tapes man.

Every song he played was and is iconic. Yes, with a few special exceptions... Never forget the first VCR tape I watched. Jaw dropping on every note.
I was driving home listening to him on tape. Cut to the radio SRV is dead. I got seriously angry. The man took AA to heart and came out with his break thru album, In Step. "My heart goes out to others tryin to make amends". He was in prime time. He made Blues cool in the 80's. No small feet, if I may say. He refused playing on tour with Bowie and started his own tour, then dies. I still get ppissed thinking what more he would have done. He had finally reached stadium audiences. He had paid his dues and was set and ready to collect his just rewards... Guest appearance on the tonight show floored Dave. He just hung with the band the whole show... God Bless

My Dad was at this concert and many others at ElMo(Stones, Thorogood, U2, Ramones, Joan Jett, etc.. ) his best friend worked there and would let him him when he could. My dad passed away in 2018 before I really got to ask him about the shows but I got a few good stories from them(I still talk to his friend who worked there pretty regularly).

Stevie Ray Vaughan wasn't heard of in my era even though he was in my era..His music wasn't played in my hometown of Ohio..and it must have been a time when Stevie and his band was traveling from countries to different states..anyway..At least I get to hear and see the greatest legend that there was..awesome times..
I don't think his drinking and cocaine usage was really affecting in a negative way yet here he's on top of his guitar playing then texas flood I think next is unreal to play behind his back.rip srv we love you and miss u greatly.

As a young man Stevie went to the crossroads, where a well dressed old man whispered something to his ears, and Stevie couldn't ever remember what he said, but this is how that song came out ever since that day.
Been to the crossroads in Clarksdale mississippi birthplace of the blues. You can feel it in the air there.
