I love Golden Axe and this is the kind of review I have been looking for, but good lord that squeaking, scrolling text totally kills it for me. Way too hard to watch with that constant irritating sound...

No, narration is a must. The RPG text box is fun for a few seconds, but I could not deal with the entire video. The noise becomes excruciating eventually, and it detracts from the visuals of the game. :/
'Just wanted to add that the reason the 8bit Golden Axe had such a bad frame rate is b/c they didn't use sprites. Finer pixel movement wasn't possible b/c everything was done with tiles - and just from a technical perspective, it *is* an amazing port.
You kick ass at golden Axe! I can understand if you feel shy about your voice, but the text scroll can be a bit distracting. Edit: I might be mistaken but, I think the golden axe is the one Death Adder has not Thunderhead, they turned his axe to silver to avoid that confusion
The reason that Golden Axe for the Master System is so choppy is that it uses software sprites, drawing the images pixel by pixel with the Z80 processor to give an unlimited sprite size and with no flicker. It's impressive all right; I wonder if with more time the engine could be sped up and made smooth. Also, maybe they could have mixed in some hardware sprites to take the load off the main CPU.
Almost correct, it actualy uses background tiles for everything other than the life bar, thats why it avoids the sprite flickering and yes, this causes it to be very choppy. A few master system games did this.
Personally I was not disappointed at all at the Genesis version. I think because I was use to the 8bit generation that had ports that were not even close visually. The Genesis felt like a huge leap forward and the slight downgrade in visuals did not bother me at all.
I think the Genesis version is superior in terms of gameplay to the arcade original myself. The enemy AI is trickier, the mechanics feel a bit refined and more nuanced, and the new last stage is a great addition.
Great video! Well, about the genesis port, despite the low color depth and low detail quality, we cannot forget that it has lots more contrast, it gives a good feeling to the overall piece. The animations have less frames, it is a bad thing but at same time, the game has a little more impact because of that. A great thing about golden axe is that the game is still on the shelves since it was first released. It was ported through the decades and always had an available version to buy, since arcade, genesis, sega cd, pc, amiga, playstation 2, xbox 360, wii, xone, steam and so on.
this game is so good as an arcade game. What I can tell is the UI is ahead of its time. It is so simple, clean, and provide players with a good, immersive view. It has the feel of Dead space that kind of immersive feeling for a 2d game. Smooth action, beautiful setting, and music all made it a game must play.
Hi. Nice bits of trivia about this classic. I'm confused why though you say the master system port features no axe at all in the game, when Death Adder is the one weilding the axe. I never understood why in the arcade version Gillius wielded the golden axe? The game is about claiming the Golden axe back from Death Adder who previously stole it and used its power to rule over the land. Yet you start the game with it as Gillius. Be funny if you choose Gillius and the moment the first screen loads, The End appears followed by credits 😂
Some interesting facts on one of my all time favourite games, especially seeing where all the sounds from the movies came from - but like the other comments have said, please redo this one without the squeaking sounds. It detracted from what was otherwise a well researched and entertaining video.
This was one of the first videos I made. The assets are long gone. I agree, they're pretty frustrating as the text moves too slow and Nei's voice is too loud. Hopefully all my newer videos are better balanced. An Altered Beast video should be up this Friday. If I ever redo Golden Axe, I'll spend the time an actually narrate it.

I've heard people trying to argue that the name "Golden Axe" was based on Death Adder's axe but he has a brown axe in both the Genesis and Arcade versions. Michael Kats is responsible for naming the game and he said in an interview that the name came from Gillius's Golden Axe.
These are Great Facts! Here's a funny and immature bit of info... On The Mega CD/Sega CD version of Golden Axe on the Mega CD Sega Classics Game the audio has been enhanced and certain sound effects have been upgraded/replaced. If you play the sound effect of Gilius,Ax/male characters dying, it sounds like sex groan. As does when you play the sound effect of Tyris/female character dying, again it sounds like a sex groan. You can have a bit of fun playing the sound effects one after the other, its sounds like two people having sex ;)
I actually enjoyed the presentation style but I can get why the text sound bothers some lol. Anyway, it's great looking into the history of this series, I'm glad I finally cracked (mostly from seeing Tyris fanart admittedly) and got the Steam port as part of the Genesis collection there. Simple but fun adventure that no matter how much I fail,im having a good time
The only reasonable port is the arcade itself, or a PS2 alternative, as a bonus, for that matter. I still remember the bitter feeling of having to play and look at the completely dead and void backgrounds of Sega Megadrive with no life in them, (after returning from the arcades) starting from the Tyris' dragon flame all the way through eagle's eye movements and about three dozen other things. And then, the simplified music as well as the significantly dumbed down AI. Even the extra level (also present in the PC version) didn't help at all. Gamers who had to spend their hard earned nickels and dimes on Megadrive games would eventually realize that the better option is to simply get better at the arcade Golden Axe, than to play a heavily limited version at home, even at no charge and no time limit. This realization came with time, and usually a little too late. But it does come, and the next arcade hits were sure to benefit from it. Golden Axe 2 or 3. for that matter were a different ballgame altogether, cause they were Sega Megadrive exclusives....but then the arcades created Golden Axe 2 of their own! Which was quite amazing, but also very different from any other Golden Axe.

The president of SEGA (at the time), Michael Katz, saw that the dwarf wielded a golden axe and suggested the game be called Golden Axe. He even went as far as to say that the game wouldn't be marketed in the North America unless the name was changed to Golden Axe. Death Adder/Bringer's axe is the same color as their skin, brown or green.

The narration box is really cool. But using it the whole episode makes me not wanna watch the whole video. Used as an introduction or segway would be good. Just giving some honest feedback cuz I like what you’re doing.
When I was a kid, a store I went to had a version of Golden Axe that was different from others, the skeleton hands on the character select screen dripped blood. I've never seen this version any other place.

Know Your Video Games I can't stand going on RUclips when people don't talk on the videos and use text instead, but I can actually sit here and watch and read all of yours. I don't know of that is because I'm such a Phantasy Star fan or if it's because I'm a retro gamer. But like I said before I like it, this style is a fresh way to take a look at classic games. I'm sure it's a lot of work to do it this way, but well worth it.
When I first started working on this project, it was going to be in the Shining Force Universe. However, some part of me was never satisfied with Phantasy Star II's ending and I always wanted to revisit those characters. So, I thought it would be fun to bring them back to life with a review/facts show. However, a limited percentage of people would enjoy this type of show; old school gamers and Phantasy Star Fans like us! I have some good shows coming up in the next few months!
I don't agree about memory limitations concerning the PC Engine version. Streaming the music from CD is one thing, but you only have a 64KB buffer to put samples in. In a sample-heavy title like this, will you have enough room even with ADPCM? The Mega Drive can at least stream successfully due to its cartridge access speed, but that port was only created in a few weeks and, unlike Revenge of Shinobi, had a sub-optimal sound driver which, like with Master System titles, paused the music whilst it played samples. There is no technical reason that, with a few more weeks of development time, the Mega Drive version couldn't have been polished more. Sprite-wise and music-wise, it's pretty much there.
So the limited memory is the reason the artwork for the PC-Engine CD port looks for terrible? Limited memory is the reason Golden Axe has tiny Sprites? Why does Altered Beast PC-Engine maintain larger sprites and all it's animation? Or, can you explain why Double Dragon II on PC-Engine CD can have a perfect port with animation, environments and sprites that are equal to that of Golden Axe?
I was talking about audio, which means I was only talking about audio RAM. I even agreed with you that the PC Engine CD hardware was much more capable than this title suggested.
You do a good job on these man, but I have 1 large criticism. the noise that comes out of the Phantasy Star girl's mouth is unbearable. I want to watch the whole thing with the sound on but I simply cannot. Your show has a nice format..

It's an old video. When I first made it, I thought it would be fun to experience a review as though it were a 16-bit video game. Over the past five years, I've gotten messages like this. So, I changed the format. Current videos have Narration. However, Golden Axe is my most popular or click on video. So, I'll be remaking it later in the year.

I've replied to this same comment over and over. Death Adder uses a brown Axe. Look at Gilius's axe and look at Death Adders Axe; It's brown in both the arcade and Genesis ports. Plus, Michael Kats named the game and he's stated that the game was named Golden Axe due to Gilius's Golden Axe.
The official Golden Axe instruction manual says the Golden Axe is in Death Adder's possession. Doesn't make much sense for Gillius to have it, no matter what poor palette choices were made.
This was one of my first videos. As you can see by the date, it's old. I've considered remaking it. And I might at some point in time but for the mean time, I'd rather make new videos.

Yes the "Golden Axe" is referring to Death Adder's, Gillius' axe being golden must have been an oversight as it was fixed in the home port.

Stephan Dolby Memory Limitation aren’t an excuse for bad artwork or small sprites. Altered Beast turned out find with these same limitations.

The villain Death Adder carries the titular Golden Axe. The home port made a mistake by changing the colour of the dwarf Gilius's weapon.

The MD/Genesis was a downgraded arcade system. (slower clock speed) This game was only 4mbit. Figure the arcade version had a bit more Megs to it!!!

I've replied to this same comment over and over. Death Adder uses a brown Axe. Look at Gilius's axe and look at Death Adders Axe; It's brown in both the arcade and Genesis ports. Plus, Michael Kats named the game and he's stated that the game was named Golden Axe due to Gilius's Golden Axe.
The official Golden Axe instruction manual says the Golden Axe is in Death Adder's possession. Doesn't make much sense for Gillius to have it, no matter what poor palette choices were made.
Had to stop watching because of that very annoying squeak.
This was one of my first videos. As you can see by the date, it's old. I've considered remaking it. And I might at some point in time but for the mean time, I'd rather make new videos.
Next time please take away the tex sound effects. It's annoying as hell.
