I enjoyed this video very much, the sound clip trivia is great, I always found the death screams quite amusing, and now i know the movies they come from.

It should also be noted that in the arcade version, Death Adder is apparently comprised of dozens (or hundreds?) of snakes.

I saw your comments on Truxton. I do try to include as many facts that I can. The only thing I can think of, that wasn't mention in the video, was that there was a sequel released in Arcades and it was ported the FM Towns. The FM towns was a computer released only in Japan. Hope you got that game up and running via mame.

Interesting theory: the blonde guy in the middle of the Golden Axe poster art ,0:52-1:15, is actually a young version of either Death Adder or Death Bringer . Since the main protagonist Axe Battler doesn't use an axe, I always wondered just who is the guy in the poster? Can be either one, but fun to think about...lol

Wow! I never knew that Golden Axe was so influenced by so many movies I loved growin' up. with the sound bites and all. Had I known this when I was a kid I would've had more love for it. I do think its funny how they didn't get sued for stealing sound bytes from all those films.

First like, that's the first for me lol thanks again man for the batman returns cover on the cover project. Now I just have to fine some more artist that would help me out with the other covers I need. Your videos are good man keep up the good work ;)

Arcade Elite X I don't have gameboy games to help you with your covers. I do have Fighters History Dynamite for the Neo Geo AES. I can scan that if it'll help you.

Know Your Video Games That would help if you ever get any time to do that and post it so another artist might hopefully make the cover, I am no artist lol I don't know how to use those programs I am just good at printing. I also need help with labels and famicom games but no one seems to like working on covers or labels for famicom games on the cover project :( sadly.

I appreciate the compliment. These are the first videos I made. They are flawed and I know the issues they have. So, I'm used to hearing negative feedback.

There are actually quite a few more Golden Axe facts, such as the one that on the artwork for Sega Megadrive - Ax-Battler's look is copied directly from Dolph Lundgren in Heman and the Masters of the Universe. Hence blonde hair.
Gilius Thunderhead also appeared in at least one more Sega Megadrive non-Golden-Axe game, as a cameo. (maybe more than one) (Shining in the Darkness, if i recall right)
All magic effects for the arcade version are motion-animated (dragon flame, explosion blast) and are very pretty - but Sega Megadrive ones are not. (and downhill from here for any other version) This is also true for anything else animation-wise in the game, but the magic effects look particularly ugly because of that.
Animation effects for characters and backgrounds in general add a great deal of immersion to the arcade game and make a palpable difference (skies, eagle/turtle eyes, Death Adder snakes, magics, characters, dragons, ride-able dragon fire). None of those are in any port.
Stage 4, Fiend's Path is slightly shorter in the beginning on the Megadrive, but it is Stage 3 - (Turtle Village 2) which is simply butchered on the Megadrive. And i am not talking graphics here, cause this would be a truly abysmal comparison.
In the original, this stage is about 30% longer, starts with a big battle, where all 3 dragons are available right at the beginning, allowing you to choose either one to keep until the end of the level, or should you be particularly daring - duke it out on foot.
(in the arcade days, we actually had money bets at this point, if a player could complete the level using the two harder options)
Megadrive version, sadly, begins almost in the middle of the level, with only 1 dragon.
Speaking of Dragons, - the Red Dragon appears only very briefly in the Megadrive version, which once again is not even close to the original gameplay.
Also, in the original arcade game you could actually ride the dragon straight into the final battle, as the last scene was a direct continuation of your fight at the Adder's Castle drawbridge (kinda makes sense). But in the Megadrive version this gameplay option does not exist.
Let's not forget the Japanese version of the arcade with decapitation in the demo and a couple more cool effects (judging by the final frag, that is the version you were playing).
There are more details and facts, but that's a good start, Padawan :-)

Gilius is a judge in Alien Storm's bonus stage too. :)

That last stage on the Megadrive version is hilariously ill-designed given how pitiful the enemies are at general navigation and hazard avoidance. It's an issue that persisted into Golden Axe II and can once again be massively exploited on any stage with ledges and pitfalls, to the point where even the minibosses just mindlessly walk off the edge and plummet off-screen.

I remember the version that came on the Sega Smash Pack compilation released on the Dreamcast having dreadful sound.

I'd say it's nothing to do with the MD not displaying parallax, more to do with memory restrictions. 4mbit and new game.

Seems like the master system has a more accurate cover. Even the amiga has a cool but also weird cover. It looks like a nitty gritty game. But the music has almost a c64 vibe don't you think?

    • @KnowYourVideoGames
      @KnowYourVideoGames  7 лет назад +2

The music for the Master System has a C64 vibe? I'd personally feel the Master System has a unique sound unto itself.

    • @daveruda

I meant the Amiga version had a C64 vibe to its music. The master system was definetly a nice addition and had a unique feel to it.

3:16 "This game started development on PS1 and was intended to be released on PS1 and N64" - err no. Why would a game by Sega come out on PS1 and N64 when at the time Sega were still making hardware? It's far more likely that this started development for either the Saturn or Dreamcast. The PS2 remake of Golden Axe came out as a standalone on the PS2 in Japan before being released as part of the Classics Collection in the west. Otherwise a great video!

Andy O'Flaherty N64 and PS1 were still valid systems when Sega became a third party. They also signed up to become a third party well before it was announced. It’s been well documented. I read about development of the PS2 version of Golden Axe in one of the magazines of the time.
