      Just as Sophomore :D said below, that's going to be the hardest part for me if I commit to doing this - not working out! My biceps tendon on my left shoulder has been killing me for just about 2-3 years. It started right after I had biceps tenodesis surgery on my right shoulder. All MRIs came back negative for any tears on my left shoulder though. I've already gone through physical therapy but no dice. Medication doesn't work and I notice that lifting does often irritate it more. Maybe the key is COMPLETE rest for a little while. This may be my last resort...

    Hi Bob and Brad! Love your channel. Question: I had a bicep injury about 7 years ago (playing drums for long periods with poor technique) At the time I was also working out regularly. I have an active lifestyle but have not started weight training again until recently. Both my arms have plenty (equal) strength, but I notice when I flex my biceps the previously injured one does not seem to respond in the same way as the non-injured side. (does not seem to flex as hard / present as large / respond explosively) Are there any exercises (other than repeated flexing) that I can do to address this? Thank You!

    Tendonitis is practically an inflammation, right? Can these exercices really make the inflammation dissapear and totally heal the tendon? I'm struggling with pain caused by this tendonitis for 3-4 years and the orthopedical traumatologist said that surgery is the only way (they cut the superior part if the tendon and reattaches it to the humerus through a hole + screw). This sounds kinda scary, but in the end I am willing to accept it, if no other methods works!

    • @favor9677
      @favor9677 4 года назад +11

      I would recommend taking your thumb of opposite hand and separating the 2 biceps bellies and then try to lift away the bellies away from the bone individually. Work down to brachioradialis (outer forearm muscle) and do the same. Doing this on outer half of biceps and forearm is easier than inner half but do your best. Great way to massage and get more bloodflow to the area. Obviously if you have torn something all bets are off. In future when you are doing biceps curls, along with doing it the traditional way, it is very important to turn forearms about 30-40 degrees away from trunk while locking elbows against the trunk when doing biceps curls to give the biceps a more thorough workout with less future chance of injury.

    I discovered I have a torn long head bicep tendon in my dominant arm a few months ago only because I noticed the muscle looked funny (the Popeye look). An orthopedic surgeon confirmed it and told me that generally the only reason people surgically reattach it is for cosmetic reasons. He could not believe that I did not feel pain when it detached. Over the years (I'm now 63) I've had shoulder pain (both sides) on and off so maybe that was bicep tendinitis. Who knows. All I know is right now my arms and shoulders are essentially pain free and I'm continuing with my routine of sets of pull ups and pushups in the park and light weights in the gym. I have a feeling some day the other one will detach, maybe it's hereditary. But for my age I'm in great health and super active. John Elway won two superbowls with a detached long head tendon in his throwing arm!

    • @csm1813
      @csm1813 Год назад +1

      I wish mine would detach like that--I actually need to go thru surgery to get that result to deal with a labral tear! (tenotomy) And that is a very cool factoid about Elway--my surgeon kept trying to convince I wouldn't notice the 5% loss of strength and I'm like, I need ALL my strength because I have so little.

    • @exalhoa

Still no issues, it just looks funny. Banged out 50 pullups today at the park. Good luck!

    • @exalhoa
      @exalhoa 8 месяцев назад

      @@mnp8211 I don't do much TBH. After seeing the orthopedic surgeon I saw a physical therapist for one session and she recommended bicep stretches, which I do fairly regularly, and internal and external shoulder rotation exercises using a band. I do those once or twice a week. I still do the workouts I mentioned in my OP. Other than occasional weird twitchy feelings (from what's left of the tendon) everything is fine. I have arthritis in the wrist of that arm from an old injury and that bothers me more than the bicep issue in day to day activities. Good luck.

      @@JamesFeey it was getting better and I could workout for 10 months again and get all muscle and progress back. But it never really fully went away and I always had to do some more rest days than usual. 1 month ago it actually got a bit worse again so I'm pausing again at the moment... so I definitely recommend letting it heal completely at the beginning to not have the problem I have rn again

      @@JamesFeey don't do anything or just some stuff like light exentric bicep curls and band rows without biceps activation until it feels like it's gone. THEN for like 2-4 weeks very light training with machines where you have good control, slow reps,... Never go close to failure or anything. You really have to workout without feeling fatigued. Then you can slowly increase. And of course no exercises where you feel pain

    Love your videos!! You guys are the best! My Bicep is more tender towards the bottom. Basically on the opposite side of my elbow. Not the middle and not where it attaches to the shoulder. Do you still recommend the same treatment or a different course of action?

      Same here. Very difficult to find content that addresses one-time overuse onset of tendonitis. In my case it was due to trying to muscle a stackable dryer into a closet. This happened yesterday and will try this treatment and post results.

    Love these guys. Putting pressure on the inward-rotated arm, out or down, easily reproduced the pain for me. Most effective biceps tendinitis test I've tried. And the cross-friction massage works very well

    Hi. I've had a biceps tendon tear for almost 20 years now. Had an extensive SLAP tear surgery to repair a torn labrum 5 years ago. Doctor said he would repair the bicep tedon too during that SLAP surgery and used a term called "letting it fly". The doctor did not "let the bicep tendon fly" and said I could always have it done later, reason being he said I was still young. In the last 8-10 years I've been developing some herniated/bulging discs in my cervical and thoracic spine (before the shoulder surgery), plus severe and moderate nerve impingement (C4-C5, C6-C7). I feel like my spinal problems come from this bicep tear, is this possible?
    This was my reason for getting shoulder surgery originally because the pain in my neck and back was getting pretty bad and still is now. Also have this clicking/popping of the shoulder while rotating too. One doctor said that it was unrepairable damage to the shoulder capsule. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    How can I know if i tore part of the muscle tear. I heard crunching sound but there wasn’t much pain during the tear in fact I was able to finish three reps after with very diminished strength. I am traveling so going to the hospital isn’t an option right now.

    Fantastic! Been struggling with this for weeks after going up in weight too fast, Doc referred me to a Physical therapist but there's a 3 month waiting list.
    Watched dozens of vids none, of them got it right. Followed your diagnosis method, 1st negative, 2nd negative, 3rd positive.
    Started doing the massage 4x5 mins every other day a week ago. This fixed it for 90% in a week.
    Very slowly, as per your caution, starting to build up strength in it again.
    Thank you very much!

    I don’t know if I have a tear or not but I was doing curls, not really pushing myself too hard. The next day my arm I cannot stretch it fully, my arm gets stuck in a L position, if I push anymore it hurts a ton. Pain if I touch my bicep.

I loved your video here....very informative and simple to do at home. I will try. Thank you. Any other exercises would be helpful.

    My bicep shortened and went up my arm a bit I guess the “popeye” deformity. It’s not absolutely terrible but for sure different from my other arm. Basically I look like I now have one long head bi on one arm and one short head bi on the other. I have full range of motion and zero pain....no surgery and it’s been that way for two years now

    My arm doesn't hurt if I aligned it with my body and bring it straight up ( upward motion like jumping jacks), but the side of my biceps will hurt if I first bend at the elbow and then go with the same motion. It doesn't hurt as bad but it is stopping me from doing certain activities.

    I have a partial tear in my rotator cuff in the back and got bicep tendonitis bad. When I ice the front of the shoulder it actually makes it hurt like pulsing pains. Have you ever experienced that before? Should I alternate ice and heat or just ice?
