    Tip start using less plugins
    Tone 1 -2 Eqs
    Dynamics 1-3 Comp 1 De-Esser
    Space 1 Verb 1 Delay
    Less is more
    And parallel compression helps as well.

      Indeed, you are right Cris! Most of us would benefit from the using less processing! It seems like the more powerful computers get, the heavier CPU load with plugins though! Proportionally speaking, we haven’t gained much power from the early days of DAWs it seems!

And have about 10 windows open at a time - fabfilter - pigments - analog lab - serum- ama 24 - compressors - limiters. I dont even have a ssd (yet, im installing one) bounced without a sweat
    I had one over load and thats only cause i had my arp and delay creating an infinite repeat by accident.

They realized the once a year new computer business model wont keep working. The m1 m2 m3, is like googles tensor chip - their purposely holding back features so that they can release them next year. Funny thing is i have a 2021 hp x360 made for content creators and it cant do half what my 11 yr old imac does

    About the "Login Items" your statement is wrong, I'm afraid. You see, the Apps listed in "Allow in the Background" are not loaded at login! Actually. you should be quite careful when turning off a background item because the respective app most likely is designed to work in that way... Secondly, the automatic updates download does not impact the CPU performance, impacts mostly the Internet bandwidth usage which compared to your LAN bandwidth is relatively small percentage. And last but not least, to keep and work with everything on external drives could create performance issues especially when these drives are connected on the same communication bus (like on the same USB/Thunderbolt hub) with other embedded or external devices like LAN, HDMI, etc..

    • @OliBeaudoin
      @OliBeaudoin  7 месяцев назад +1

      1. Your statement is incorrect. Login items are not all necessary, most of them aren’t. For example, Google updater, Dropbox, Arturia software updater, Slate software updater, etc. Nowadays, many software developers have this tendency to add their app to Login Items, which is unnecessary. Turning off Adobe CC may be problematic though, since it is needed for Adobe apps to work. Another huge bloatware that we should find alternatives for anyway.
      2. Auto-Updates don’t affect CPU usage: they allow operations out of your own control, which may cause problems down the road. Again, OS upgrades can compromise compatibility for older DAWs, plugins, and hardware devices (for example, I had to replace my SSL MadiXtreme card for an RME Madiface few years back just to be able to continue using my SSL Alphalink IO because the latest drivers for the MadiXtreme card wouldn’t work for the OS anymore.
      3. For drives, you are right, but many (if now most) users nowadays run their DAW on a laptop with only very few ports available. Once your iLok/Steinberg USB dongles are connected, it doesn’t leave many ports for HDDs or SSDs. The video explains about Thunderbolt daisy-chaining order and using dedicated USB ports for each drive, whenever possible.

    • @binetix
      @binetix 7 месяцев назад +1

      The main purpose of your video is to advise, and personally I really appreciate that. So, no offence, but please check-out your saying at position 2:40 when you're showing "Allow in the Background". You're saying that "Basically here there is a list of every single program that starts when your computer boots-up". The apps automatically started with your computer are listed ONLY under "Open at login" section. The next section "Allow in..." just allows/disallows particular apps to communicate on the background when they are operational but this section has nothing to do with auto-start. Furthermore, there is a strong suggestion proposed by Apple in this section that should be taken into consideration. You should have a very strong reason to turn any of these apps off.

    • @OliBeaudoin
      @OliBeaudoin  7 месяцев назад

      @@binetix Thank you for your feedback! Much appreciated. There are no "System processes" that are inherent to the functionality of the Apple OS available to modify in System Settings' Login Items, only third party apps. Therefore, preventing them to function in the background (allow in background) can't affect OS operationality per se. The goal here is simply to go as light as possible, becauce every little detail matter. If you add up all the steps that I described in the video, I pretty much guarantee that your system will function better. Ideally, one should start from scratch with a full format, but this is not always possible/advisable, especially for busy mixers who are on tight deadlines. Cheers!

    Thanks for the Video. Actually the Point of increasing the Buffer Size with an Apple Mx Processor isn’t true anymore. Lower Buffersize of 128 or 64 will lead to better Performance with Silicon Chips. Just saying ✌️

    great video! when you say audio interface first in daisy chain do you mean like a thunderbolt 4 hub such as caldigit? what do you mean when you say daisy chain yes but hub no?

    • @OliBeaudoin
      @OliBeaudoin  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Jesse, your interface should ideally be connected straight to the thunderbolt port of your Mac.
      For daisychaining, If you have an UAD Apollo X6, which has 2 thunderbolt ports, it is best to start the daisychain with that unit first connect to the Mac’s port, and then connect other devices, such as hard drives, displays, etc. If you have an Apollo twin X, then you can’t daisychain, ideally , you’ll have to use one TB port only for this device.
      About using a hub: the problem is that they share bandwidth of the Mac TB port with all devices connected to that hub, So to maximize bandwidth to your interface, we should ideally avoid connecting it to a thunderbolt hub, such as the OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock (hub), which is an amazing device that I use in my setup, or the Caldigit TS4. It can still work well with a powerful hub like these, since TB4 is so fast (I am using my Apollo Twin X via my OWC dock because my iMac doesn’t have enough ports).
      Let me know if this answered your question. Cheers!

    • @jessefallas7094
      @jessefallas7094 7 месяцев назад +1

      thanks for the response! Lets say I wanted to have a setup where everything is connected to a thunderbolt 4 dock/hub, do you think that can work well?
      My second question is, should projects and sound content be stored on separate external drives if someone wants to keep their internal drive as free as possible? Some people have their sound content and projects on the same external drive.@@OliBeaudoin

    • @OliBeaudoin
      @OliBeaudoin  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@jessefallas7094Hey Jesse, you're very welcome. My interface is running through my TB4 hub here and is working fine. Once in a while though, it happens that when I boot up my iMac, the devices connected to the hub (such as my UAD Satellite and UAD Apollo Twin X) don't show up. In that case, I quickly disconnect and reconnect the hub and they reappear, no big deal.
      For your 2nd question, always have all apps and OS in your main internal SSD drive. The rest, like VSTi libraries and projects, should be saved on another drive, ideally an SSD or a 7200RPM HDD. I use separate drives for sessions/projects and another one just for Kontakt libraries, just to make sure that each drive has as much bandwidth as possible. I would say, try to get your project files on a smaller external SSD and all your big libraries on another external 7200RPM HDD, or another SSD if you are willing to spend the extra bucks! Cheers!

    Ive been a Computer tech for 30 plus years the comment about cluttered and slowing down on a Mac compared to a Windows box is rubbish. one of my old computers a MacMini 2011 ive used it for audio and day to day work for 12 years not once has it needed a format and reinstall. I currently in last 3 years run bitwig as my DAW and ive not needed to update the computer let alone wipe and reinstall. its an amazing little box that does the job no slow downs or crashes . my bufferis set to 256 and it runs a dozen instances of Hive 2 for example and plenty of other plugins. I’ve formatted PCs and Macs countless times for many people and it always helped bring new life and speed to new and old machines, every time single time. To call this statement rubbish means you may are unaware of other users’ experiences and/or treating your machine in a very different way
