I've had TDR Simulathe sitting on my desktop since release and i still haven't gotten round to testing it lol. But it's absolutely crazy that they've simulated a lathe and it works. Instant pro tool !
Just curious....all mixers are saying to mix bass in the mono ..and then with the baseline you make it stereo...why not to do this already in the mixing phase ? Is mono bass thing outdated ? Cheers..
Looking forward to a video on simulathe! When analyzing previously pressed masters and new masters with extreme settings, I’m not seeing a huge difference in the vinyl cutting simulation… not sure if I’m using it it correctly or if there’s really not that much difference required in the masters
1:46 despite my autism being the Costco generic brand that doesn’t have the “good at math” feature (I call it Kirkland-Signature Brand Autism), I do appreciate when you result down different moves based on mathematics. Do you have a more fleshed out “audio mastering math” sort of video?
I'm curious on your opinion on Elevate and SpectralDynamics. Also Fabfilter ProL. Sometimes I feel like it's a bit on a heavy handed side considering Cpu consumption, but in all honestly I like how it sounds
@@panorama_mastering from 2x to 4x Rarely go over 4, most of the time in trying to keep oversampling off... It might be my fault on one side as I like the sound of the algorithms I tend to use it as mixing clipper/saturator instead of going with some "friendlier" option. Newfangled Saturate for example also feels ultra heavy for clipper/saturator compared to Kclip and Freeclip. But I like the sound. Sorry it's not that I'm complaining or anything... Nice entertaining video! However didn't like the Bassline in the example in this video, the hihats became more harsh after enabling it and the whole balance shifted to more brightness. I find that always when I use a stereo widening it's making a mix brighter so I tend to use it on the buses or individual channels in a mix more than on a mix bus to prevent overbrightening the mix later.
Hey Nicholas, I would like to see a video on mastering an EP or album and with the process looks like working with songs. Also, how do you add metadata to tracks in Pro Tools?
FWIW, I have both Kotelnikov GE and Unisum. Kotelnikov is still my go to, Unisum does some really great things but I've only had it 6 months and I'm still learning (it has made it onto a few masters using modified presets in that time). The big thing that jumps out at me while using both, where Unisum really outdoes Kotelnikov is the ability to more or less crossfade between different ratios and attack/release settings. Kotelnikov has 2 release settings, and you can do a few smoothly variable frequency dependent ratio presets in the paid version, but Unisum gives you more control over all of that, and then gives you attack settings and envelope shapes as well. Also, Unisum's detection circuit is multiple discrete bands while Kotelnikov, even with frequency dependent ratios, is broadband with just a filtered sidechain. I think that's the biggest differences. As for how that manifests in my work, the jury is still out.
No Shadow Hills mastering compressor, or SPL Iron? No Weiss stuff? that stuff is better than most of the plugins you showed here, at least in my comparisons. Black box M/S is amazing IMO ...But I love the format and information...I'd also use 2 completely different sources and add live instruments with piano and acoustic drums, if something works with electronic music and jazz then it's definitely God-tier.

This is all extremely subjective and I suggest you try what works for you. I own the DS1 MK3 and it is my go to limiter for mastering, but I'd be lying if I said it is life-changing. I also own the Maximizer (within the Ozone Suite) that for him is life-changing and that I only used in my first years. I don't believe you need to spend any money in order to get great results. I'm mainly a producer and although I own many very good, expensive and much praised plugins: I find myself using ableton stock more and more. Do I use the Weiss MM1? In mastering occasionally, yes. It's best applied subtly in my opinion. But if you still have important things to invest in, like: Monitors, room-treatment, studio desk, better chair, etc. - don't waste your money on plugins. I know you probably still will, we all did and all do. But there is no life-changing plugin. There are life-changing workspace situations and life-changing experiences and skills. I know you didn't ask for this comment, but I felt like sharing! Enjoy your week!
@@panorama_mastering if you have the cpu for it slapping an instance of gullfoss in between also sounds great. I realize it's an "eq" and you usually stick those after but there's something really nice about treating it like a dynamic processor and sticking in between those two
Regular viewer here. Any chance you could make the volume of your voice more in line with the volume of the music in future? You got me constantly reaching for my volume knob haha Great video as always though. I'm surprised not to see the Tone Projects stuff higher!

Amek Mastering compressor, Brainworks bx-XL, Sonnox, McDSP, SSL and Weiss stuff or A.O.M. G3?? I like your videos, but this one make no sense...
I love vsc 2 but I do agree it’s not exactly versatile, my uni had a real one and it’s very close to the hardware. I think when kotelnikov is so cheap/free, you can’t really beat it.

Hey Joshua, where does Michelangelo sit in your rankings? Its a new plugin so you don’t have it in your video here but I’ve seen you use it elsewhere
Other plugins I'd consider:
• Playfair Audio Dynamic Grading
• Soundtheory Gullfoss EQ
Nice share!!

Agree on the fabfilter q3. Almost every time I have it on something, I have screwed it up somewhere. It is a kind of workaround instead of a cure.
