Hello! So I had originally hoped to put this out closer to the 1 year anniversary of Gaming For A Non-Gamer, but due to some timing stuff I obviously didn't lol. I know this is completely different from a typical Razbuten video, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. A more typical video essay will be out before the end of the year, and, like, ya know...I appreciate ya and all that good stuff. Peace.
I was SHOCKED when she asked "what are the hearts". My 30+ years of absorbing "video game shit" really has blinded me to the idea that there are people who just don't have that knowledge haha
Kinda surprised me to cuz other games she played had hearts for HP like shovel knight, zelda, and others. But to be fair a lot of them didn't use hearts and instead used healthbars like doom, shovel knight, dark souls, etc.
It shocked me that he points out the depleting bubbles and she doesn't understand that they are her air! MY 30+ years of absorbing video game shit has trained me to ALWAYS look for an oxygen meter. I hate drowning in video games!

She asked a question that was basically, "is there fall damage?" and then walked off a really high place. She curses like a sailor. She hears Razbuten ask her not to do certain things, (fast travel, step on his flowers) and basically takes it as a challenge. She nearly breaks a controller in frustration. Maybe she just doesn't know it yet, but she's already one of us gamers. _One of us! One of us!_
It's actually very interesting to see her struggle. Understanding what seems to us like logical or simple as some learning curve we've mastered so long ago we don't even notice it can be a challenge to some of us. - Coordination of control to the camera, movement and action - Understanding what/where/how to do things all at once. - Figuring out the failures/mistakes and learn from them after 1-2 try - Focus > Stress in critical moments - Puzzles - Figuring out the point of the game (Portals and Minecraft) - Lastly, identifying the playable character's sex
You know, this sounds to me exactly like learning how to drive a car. At first you have no idea how to coordinate changing gears, being aware of your surroundings, controlling the speed of the car, moving the wheel... But those are basics of basics. Once you grasp them, however, you don't think about that - you just jump into a new car and drive, your movements are automatic, you don't think about it anymore. The car becomes the extension of your body. Just like a game pad becomes the extension of your hands when playing games. I'm a life-long gamer that learnt how to drive a few years ago and I feel like this is a pretty accurate comparison of how a non-gamer might feel when learning how to play games. My experiences of learning how to drive to the point of it becoming my second nature and "feeling" the car as if it was my own body (even in stressful split second decision making moments, as in my body moves the car our of danger in the same way it would duck to avoid a projectile) seem to look pretty similar, at least.
@@gygy82 yeah agreed, you just gotta learn to do small adjustments to see if it clicks and your brain has worked it out. once it clicks its smooth sailing. But if you dont adjust, the time where everything just clicks into place and make sense will be a long way off.
I love how she casually just makes advanced moves in Celeste without being taught but misses the simplest grab... people without a set idea of how to play a game always have the most creative solutions :)

I once tried to show my mom Celeste because I thought the way it taught players was amazing, and because I thought the assist mode would be a useful fallback to help her get into the swing of things. Of course, all of that fell apart the moment I realized that she didn’t seem to grasp the act of jumping and moving at the same time, something I hadn’t even considered. Seeing her struggle with the controller as a barrier between her and the game, rather than an extension of it, was really enlightening. I recognized your wife as having the same problem immediately in this clip. And it’s really telling that when she finally did it, she didn’t even register that she’d done something like that. Or maybe more accurately, that something like that had *happened,* because I suspect that there’s a mental disconnect between herself and the characters that she plays, something alien to us who are used to being “in” the characters we play. So many seemingly obvious events in a game can go over a beginner’s head.
Every single one of the videos in this series makes me shed a tear. It's so wholesome that you and your wife play video games together and she actually enjoys quite a few of them. I'm more than happy for you, and all the attention you may have gotten out of it was well deserved! I hope me and my girlfriend will ever play video games like this. @@mcawesome9705 I was wondering how she did it. i thought it was something that would only happen when you jump of one of they obstacles that move right after it stops moving
I think the most impressive thing here is her dedication. Whenever I try to get my dad to play games he usually gives up after a minute of not understanding the controls Edit: even with me trying to help him
The gaming for a non-gamer videos were so successful because seeing how she reacts sparks nostalgia in all of us from when we started playing said games.
I decided to rewatch thus whole playlist, and one thing that's really nice about this video is hearing your wife celebrate her successes. Hearing a lot more of her input in this video is real nice. It might be interesting to hear her more of her thoughts on these experiences, like in the AC/casual video, in future videos of these experiments.
Please let Mrs. The Lady know that we really appreciate the suffering she went through for this series, these videos are fantastic! Give her a raise or something.
As a fellow wife of a lifelong gamer, this is extremely relatable. What's most difficult for me in games is camera control, walking in a straight line on narrow ledges, and remembering button combinations, so I don't play those kinds of games (FPS, open world RPG, all triple A title games, etc). The closest I got to trying was giving BOTW a shot. When I made it to the bridge part (as seen in this video), I couldn't get it to work, had my husband do it for me, and then shortly gave up on the game bc there were too many of those power thingies to remember. Over time, I've grown to appreciate video games and we've found a handful that we both can play together. I appreciate this series for shining a lot on us kinda-gamers and the patience you both shown in all these games. I also commend the great editing for all these hours of gaming! Needless to say, love this series. Take care and happy gaming!

@@GiantButterKnife ah, yeah, the part where only ladies can enter the gerudo village would make no sense and be frustrating if you thought Link was a girl
I really appreciate the frustration your wife has put into this series. I appreciate it may be mostly for you, but I really like how this series shines a light on how gaming can be inaccessible to outsiders because of its internal language, or just it's toxic players, or 'not being good enough to have fun here'. As a complete aside, I kind of want to know if you and she have tried playing a table top roleplaying game - like DnD but a more story based collaborative game system seems like it might be something she'd have fun with. Monster of the Week or Blades in the Dark come to mind as options.
I would love to see her attempt to beat a game. I think it would be interesting to see if she spent a lot of time with a single game if by the end she would feel some sort of attachment to it or if she will just feel relief that it’s over.
This video had me in stitches! XD This was all incredibly relatable. For a non-gamer, the lady you live with sure cusses and rages like a gamer! I love this series, and all your videos! Keep it up! Can’t wait for more!
i love the attention to detail at 18:32 where the music dulls when she goes underwater - this whole video was SO good, and only enhanced by the editing. thank you to theSir Toasty, Razbuten, and the lady you live with!
You know what you like and are comfortable playing those games instead of taking risks playing games you may not like and actively avoiding games you do not like known through experience. It's a mixture of habit and comfort.
Honestly they should have just put a wall of barricades to stop players wondering off the critical path to avoid these situations from happening, it's lazy game design. Instant death screen is far worse and less understandable of what caused it.
The control confusion reminds me of the first time I got my sister to play some of my games. A nice reminder that so many game controls that come 'instinctively' to us are actually build over years of playing games.
"Will Tom Nook ever stop?" No. He never stops. He will always hound you forever. lol Seriously, this is like the most wholesome content around. I love seeing great relationship stuff like this. :D
I love these sorta deleted scenes! Partners playing things together is always so nice to watch. It doesn't matter if either both people are experiencing smth for the first time or one person is getting to share a game they love, it's just so nice. Just watching the highlights of you guys laughing together and watching the Lady You Live With have a real first experience with games a lot of people love and have played to death and back is way more entertaining than any structured LP. I'm sure there was plenty of work to be done in editing it down, but I'm glad this video is here.
just binged this series and not only did this have some rather heart-warming moments it really was something else to see what we, as gamers, can take for granted as knowledge we assume just automatically clicks for everyone. Thank you for this.
I wanted to do this with my husband, who is not a gamer at all (roles are kinda changed up here 😂) but after playing like maybe 30 minutes he asked me “And what’s fun about gaming?” He prefers just watching a movie, while I hate movies, I want to do “something” and a game brings so much more joy for me 😂
Maybe get him play some narrative focused games like The Wolf Among Us or What Remains of Edith Finch, something that he can find familiar as watching movies.
The thing that stands out to me about non-gamers doing any unfamiliar thing is how rarely they actually try to figure out how it works. Like they don't attempt to actually keep track of what buttons or processes they do, and what they accomplish. So often they just learn one thing they can do and then just cease attempting to press other buttons. Like the start of Celeste it seemed she took a long time to realize there was a jump button in addition to the dash button.
I'm 2 years late to this, but I must say... I 1000% appreciate your wife's use of "fuck". It's not just an expletive, but also a comma. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely glorious! I love every moment of it (including the struggles) but the absolute best parts are when something clicks and she achieves what she tries to do. It makes me wish I could re-experience the magic of learning how to game.
I’ve honestly loved this series so much. It’s encouraged me to branch out and play games I might not have played before. It’s one of the things that made me make the switch from err the switch to the Xbox (which has also been incredible because the Xbox has WAY more accessible games and just accessible options in general which as a disabled gamer has blown my mind a bit). I really enjoy this series so much and I think it’s success speaks to how important it is that the gaming world consider how many potential players they lose out on just by not considering how a game might be for a new gamer (or in my case for a disabled gamer, where I find a lot of crossover with the experience of new gamers because I need things to feel welcoming as I get to grips).

Or maybe more accurately, that something like that had *happened,* because I suspect that there’s a mental disconnect between herself and the characters that she plays, something alien to us who are used to being “in” the characters we play. So many seemingly obvious events in a game can go over a beginner’s head.

18:39 - This is a perfect example of staying calm and giving clear instructions in an emergency situation.
"I'm not going to swear this time..." *SWEARING INTENSIVIES*
😂😂
INTENSI *_f_* IES
I think that was the joke
Every single one of the videos in this series makes me shed a tear. It's so wholesome that you and your wife play video games together and she actually enjoys quite a few of them. I'm more than happy for you, and all the attention you may have gotten out of it was well deserved! I hope me and my girlfriend will ever play video games like this. Anyways, lots of love from The Netherlands! Keep up the great stuff!
14:45 she did a hyperdash, a move most gamers don't do until the end of the game xD
that's actually a super but yeah probably
@@mcawesome9705 I was wondering how she did it. i thought it was something that would only happen when you jump of one of they obstacles that move right after it stops moving
@@marcelocarlos4102 have you reached it yet
I think the most impressive thing here is her dedication. Whenever I try to get my dad to play games he usually gives up after a minute of not understanding the controls
Edit: even with me trying to help him
I wouldn't like this to not break the fun number
No bcs same. It’s rlly sad bcs I’ll help all that I can but they simply aren’t willing to get past the learning curve
The portal lightbulb moment is pure gold
“I’d have to divorce you, if you fast travel..”

*she fast travels*
dats why shes known as "the lady i live with" and not wife
That's why she camp outside of his house and trampled on his flowers
Game Over
I dunno how people can joke like that. Seems worse than death.
@@Walamonga1313 worse than death? Yeah you sure got your priorities straight lol
I love how she casually managed to pull off a hyperdash in celeste lol
shout out to the lady you live with's mom probably watching her definitely-not-swear right now !
The transition from sighing at getting eaten by a zombie to screaming in terror at trying to track the ball in rocket league is fantastic.
Now that she has a highlight montage on youtube, we can't really say she's a non gamer now. Rip series, hope to see more lol
11:29 Idk man, those are clearly gamer noises
yep
that's literally me

This was as great series, you should do more "experiements" in the future :)
Hehe with the woman he lives with? Some experiments? Niiice

The fact her camara was looking to the sky the hole time whilst playing Zelda made me connect mentally to this person I’ve never met before.
Got my dad to try out cod and he did this like every 5 minutes it's so funny how intense he gets when he sees an enemy
...did your wife ever figure out link is a guy?😂
*guys I was just laughing at the funny lady why are you all so hostile*
I watched the longer video on Patreon, I'm pretty sure it was a joke
Does it matter in any meaningful way?
@@TZerot0 i mean yeah its canon so it's important
@@streax8885 but does it matter? Does anything meaningfully change if the player never realizes Link is supposed to be a boy?
@@GiantButterKnife ah, yeah, the part where only ladies can enter the gerudo village would make no sense and be frustrating if you thought Link was a girl
I love your chemistry and her gaming personality and the moments she suddenly gets it. Makes me so happy!
Not gonna lie the whole:
"I'm gonna have to divorce you if you fast travel."
That in my mind was hilarious.
Well she "beat" animal crossing sorta I'd assume they have a three star island
This video had me in stitches! XD This was all incredibly relatable. For a non-gamer, the lady you live with sure cusses and rages like a gamer! I love this series, and all your videos! Keep it up! Can’t wait for more!
“I’m gonna break this controller” spoken like a true gamer.
i love the attention to detail at 18:32 where the music dulls when she goes underwater - this whole video was SO good, and only enhanced by the editing. thank you to theSir Toasty, Razbuten, and the lady you live with!
18:32 - I love that little touch of muffling the music when she dropped underwater.
At this point, I think the lady you live with has played a more diverse selection of games than I have. Am I a Non Gamer?
It's more about the time and comprehension of games, if you watch gameplays of whatever you can already think of yourself as a gamer
You don’t really need a diverse selection of games to be a gamer there are some people who only like shooter games and so on
You know what you like and are comfortable playing those games instead of taking risks playing games you may not like and actively avoiding games you do not like known through experience. It's a mixture of habit and comfort.
@@cattysplat why spend sixty dollars on games you probably won’t like when you can get a game you probably do
game jornalists play plenty of games they dont care about and rush to finish just to write a wrong article, that doesnt make them gamers either
My brain is just instinctively thinking of the action to do, and then the opposite thing happens on screen...
Yep!
This video is pure torture! :-)
18:33 that little edit made me laugh way too hard. Absolutely incredible.
This whole "doomcraft" editing is gold. :D
Lady you live with: **gets something right in Celeste**
**turns into Santa Claus**
Man her finally understanding portals is one of the BEST. FEELINGS. EVER
I remember when I first had this a-ha moment and it absolutely blew me away
When she called out Naught dog's games for feeling like a movie, I felt that. And I liked it.
"Will Tom Nook ever stop?"
No. He never stops. He will always hound you forever. lol
Seriously, this is like the most wholesome content around.
I didn’t ask for this but I’ll take it just fine.
Me when my girlfriend comes into the room with a strap-on.
"WHY ISN'T SHE CLIMBING??"
I died xD
1:08 "Was that plug subtle enough?"
That was incredibly smooth, I wish more people actually incentivized following up their plugs and left it at that.
11:28 I think she deserves her gamer card, she's a natural since day one
The music cutting to a muffled version when she goes underwater was that best gag I have seen in a long time.
24:02 this is what I image Santa Claus and his Wife sound like

I didn't know it was even possible for someone to feel this much genuine emotion
sorry, the first clip you showed was the lady you live with checking if there was fall damage.
are you sure she's not a gamer?
There's only one way to find out.
Put her in a first person game and see if she checks if she can see her feet.
She has an lot of patience and dedication to keep playing some of those games after so many attempts. I have to respect that.
I wanted to do this with my husband, who is not a gamer at all (roles are kinda changed up here 😂) but after playing like maybe 30 minutes he asked me “And what’s fun about gaming?”
He prefers just watching a movie, while I hate movies, I want to do “something” and a game brings so much more joy for me 😂
Maybe get him play some narrative focused games like The Wolf Among Us or What Remains of Edith Finch, something that he can find familiar as watching movies.
18:34 The muffled "You Will Know Our Names" was a nice touch
That eureka moment in Portal was beautiful.
You're a monster for putting your wife through this.
Good job!
The drowning countdown music from Sonic still gives me an anxiety response all these years later.
"why isnt she climbing it!?"
Ah, yes. Here, we can see the-lady-he-live-with playing as zelda, who is currently not climbing despite being told to.
I'm loving this series so much. She definitely rages like a true gamer xD
Can't wait for the next episode if you have one planned
