    Great progress!
Since you are solo studying you may not be getting any guidance on pronunciation.
You have a very british "a" vowel going on in words like "wanikani".
You are using what linguists call a "Near open front unrounded vowel". In IPA it's written "æ".
You want to be using a "Open central unrounded vowel". In IPA it's written "a".
Japanese always uses "a" never "æ" because "æ" doesn't exist in japanese.
If you google both of these the first result will be wikipedia where you can play and hear the difference.
    Continued luck on your studies!

The best textbook is Japanese from Zero (imo). Just started a few weeks ago, and I’m a slow but thorough beginner, so that book it ideally progressive.

thank you! It doesn't always feel like much but I watched suzume yesterday in the cinema and felt quite proud of how familiar japanese feels

Well one thing that amazes me while learning any language is when I realise things are so familiar, and this is connected with this and all that kinda stuff! That just motivates me to study more!

Your progress is similar to mine, except I decided to learn the entire Joyo Kanji alongside Genki 1 for about a year...
I just finished the first book and am taking the JLPT N5 exam next month!
Good luck with your studies, I look forward to seeing your progress!
