  • If you’re new here, I’m on a personal quest to find the "Japan in me." My grandparents are Japanese, but I grew up without inheriting the language or culture. Now, I’m diving into learning Japanese and I’m taking you along for the ride.
In this video, I'll be sharing my detailed study schedule for the Genki II textbook. After not passing the JLPT N4, I'm more motivated than ever to succeed. I'll break down the Genki II structure, the timeline I've set for myself, my approach to each lesson, how I track my progress, and what keeps me motivated.
I am also going to be sharing the accompanying resources I use each week with everyone!
You're all amaaaazing! Let's keep going
01:36 - Overview of Genki II
    02:17 - My Study Timeline
    04:18 - Lesson-by-Lesson Approach
    06:00 - Tracking Progress & Accountability
    09:00 - Staying Motivated

I'm glad to hear your result didn't make you want to give the language up, but did the opposite ❤ language learning is a marathon and small 'failures' are inevitable. We are learning after all! 😊 All the best from the UK! ❤

I missed the post asking for advice but I think Genki 2 is the best choice even though I never used it. I highly respect textbook learning but really struggle to stick with it as a self learner which is why I am so glad I took classes at the local community college. But getting to N2 I had to self study (I consider online lessons part of my self study routine but I did a lot and they helped too). It was quite the struggle and I even moved to Japan and lived there before I passed. I think I failed N2 three times before passing. And I was the smart one learning Japanese among all the friends I made on my language journey. For me, Japanese was my #1 hobby by far even though I had a full time job so I was more than willing to dedicate all my free time towards it. I'm struggling with Korean while you struggle with Japanese. I'm off to do a 2 week study vacation in Seoul next month which I'm looking forward to. Nothing helps motivation like visiting the country.

Can you make your notion notes available or teach us how to make those? It’s so thorough.

Yeah! I'll try and attempt a video walk through of it in more detail soon. Though I am making improvements to it as I go 🤪 so it might take a little while for me to be happy with how valuable it was for my studies

Looks really organised! I felt the motivation part. I've been lucky to have some Japanese friends to talk to but that doesnt help with things like drilling kanji 😭. 頑張って!

My teacher recommended going through Genki 2 in about 6 months. But surely it must be very individual and depend on how much time one can spend on it? Have you used the genki apps btw? What do you think of them?

Ah interesting! Yes it’s really down to how much time you pour into studies every day over the course of 6 months. I’m using the genki vocab app and think it’s definitely worth the £5. But I haven’t tried any of the other ones because I was experimenting with Bunpro and WK!
