@Master Yoda why can't you just accept the joke? Nobody cares that you know that during the United States Revolution there was a king and not a queen, you are on a chess video, not a history buff video, so stop trying to correct everything anyone else says
@Master Yoda Charity work??? How is telling someone that Great Britain is different that England charity work? Those two words are interchangeable in day-to-day talk, and everyone would know what you are talking about. If you were to go up to someone and say England, they are going to think of the United Kingdom, England is used to refer to the U.K., and England is a part of the U.K., so how the hell are you teaching me if I know this stuff? and how is this charity work? Again, this is a chess video, not a history buff video, and I would appreciate it if you could just take the joke and not be so serious about one small mistake another person makes over the internet.

You can't cheat against this computer- if you move the wrong piece than what it orders you to move, the game pieces won't match the computer game score any more. I get what you mean though. lol
I cheat against the computer regularly, lol. After I have made a horrible move and played it out I will go back (a number of moves) to see where I went wrong and what line would have been better. I don't see it as cheating, more learning from my mistakes.

This computer is very cool because it is physical and you can touch it with your hands, as if you are playing with a living person, not on a smartphone or monitor. and you move real figures - full immersion. It's a pity that so few of them are produced and I found a similar one at a flea market with very great difficulty (Chess Partner 3 Kasparov )
I played in a tournament with you way back in the day in Minnesota. The Scholastic chess championships I believe. I squandered my talent that I didn't really know I had at the time, but was similar in rating to you back when we were 11/12 years old. I was 1633 in 1999, I think you were about the same
What is wrong with the 2.5k people that disliked this video? This is top-tier content. He isn't whoring himself out for subscribers and sponsorships, he's just presenting the content in a polite and informative way. This is genuinely everything I've been looking for in a chess youtuber.
In my experience most people who dislike these types of videos aren't doing it willingly. I can't even count the amount of times I've accidentally disliked a video on my phone, I always take the time to un-dislike, but I'm sure most people just don't give a damn.
I loved watching your video(twice now). Excalibur King Arthur, bought at Fry's Electronics in 2003. Once I learned the London System opening, I was finally able to start winning at higher levels at a faster rate, 10 level jumps at a time. It's like I cracked the code and on my way to finally beat the computer soon.
Ah I miss them times John,I used to sell these table top chess computers in my shop 90s to mid 2000, the strongest one I can recall was a Mephisto big wooden board and practically full size pieces it was around 2200 , my first ever one was early 80s a scicys one must have been around 1200 max lol, I was a beginner then so I thought it was a GM lol,but it definitely improved my game and gave me hours and hours of enjoyment,I moved up to stronger models later. Thanks for the memories John,I think you went back to being a kid again then John. Cheers Joe (BDG Joe)
Lol, I first started with Lego chess, I too thought that the computers must obviously be the best players, I would often pair the computers up against each other so I could witness the best games ever played! Now I realize how bad they are xD
Never seen such a thing in Russia, it is incredible for me that so long ago you had such cool "computers". My first opponent was my grandma (she taught me to play), and now I am helping her to fight against Chess Titans :)
me too besides my father he taught me, I played against ChessMaster 7000 i think, and I beat him everytime, I thought I was good, but I know now I still need work.
I preferred the PC version chessmaster 9000 namely because the mobile version was tremendously weak I actually tested it's strength by only using variants of the scholars mate every match and it worked up until 2500 every single time which is rather pathetic
I used to play with a very similar chess computer in the late 80s. Its name was Mephisto and I really enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for reminding me of those old good times.
I'm 33 years old, never played chess. Now in my "mid 30s" I'm starting to shift interest towards chess . I'm little overwhelmed by all those openings and moves to remember. But I will watch your basics videos for sure!
Omg this was also mine, my uncle bought one of those for christmas when I was like 4 and he taught me how to play but I didnt have many people to play with so I always played against the machine
"How creative, hehe, oh more bad jokes, OH NO I'M MATED! Anton squared me, oh man I just fell for a scholars mate, I just got scholared!" Did it happen like this? :)
There is a connection. I remembered this quick mate but didn't know the moves or name. After some googling I stumbled onto Jerry's video. That was the beginning of me watching tons of chess videos and putting (a little) effort into getting better. Before that I'd just screw around on Yahoo from time to time.
DGT Centaur would be the modern version of this board. It's sleek, beautiful and modern looking. If you're into playing over the board vs computer then you might find that worth a try... Especially with the interface this used, it might be familiar to you. I applaud your younger self for playing chess and damn I wish I had something like that when I was little. I hope that you preserve this childhood memory and when you're an old guy you do another video or hologram or whatever is used in the future... I'm relly curious to see you take level 72. You can try to cut computer's thinking time out of the video. And my first opponent was my father, who taught me the moves some summer. But he wasn't any kid of serious chess player. He just played a bit as a kid himself. We only played occasionally I decided to learn more of chess way in teens and then I played ChessMaster on my phone. Still, wasn't very serious about it. Until I was 19 and I was bored and I got ChessMaster for a computer and did Josh Waitzkin's tutorials, which were the thing that really taught me how to play. And then I started playing chess on facebook and this is how it started :P
nah, john is 2400-2500 according to the video whereas the computers max level is 1650, it wouldnt even be a challenge, also stated in the video is that the comp thinks for a long time at higher levels.
Thanx for making this video! I always wanted to have this device many many years ago and i always wondering how to use it. Now i know, thanx to your video!
Krabbypal maybe, depends on time controls. I figured the first line out in about 30 seconds. I completely missed rg8 and would have misplayed if someone played it against me
My dad was my first opponent and even though we don't have the best relationship, I appreciate that he's got better skills just on intuition. He doesn't read any theory or whatever and he absolutely kicked my ass last time he was at my place. I think he did Caro-Kann against me which took me aback since I'd never had opponents online do it to me. Just pushes me harder to be better.
Dude I love this video. Such a cool old school piece of history. (I've also been watching your other videos, so this isn't the first one of yours I've seen. Love your videos where you're climbing the ranking ladder. They're fascinating, and it's helped me a lot.)

It's a pity that so few of them are produced and I found a similar one at a flea market with very great difficulty (Chess Partner 3 Kasparov )
Yes! It's an extremely tactile, pleasing bit of old tech :) Really fun to play - I may have to bust mine out again and record another video.
I played in a tournament with you way back in the day in Minnesota. The Scholastic chess championships I believe. I squandered my talent that I didn't really know I had at the time, but was similar in rating to you back when we were 11/12 years old. I was 1633 in 1999, I think you were about the same

In my experience most people who dislike these types of videos aren't doing it willingly.

Even though it might take some time, I would love to see a game against lvl 72!

Thanks for the nostalgia - I really enjoyed watching this. I had a Fidelity Chess Challenger 7 when I was younger.
Cheers

Me too. Chessmater taught me a lot.
ChessMaster is my favourite mobile game of all time! :D
Oh, yeah. That satisfaction you got from beating higher levels. For a long time I made sure ChessMaster was on my every phone.
I preferred the PC version chessmaster 9000 namely because the mobile version was tremendously weak I actually tested it's strength by only using variants of the scholars mate every match and it worked up until 2500 every single time which is rather pathetic
My first electronic opponent was the Mephisto MM3 in the year 1985 I think. I learn to love the game with this chess computer:)

I used to play with a very similar chess computer in the late 80s. Its name was Mephisto and I really enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for reminding me of those old good times.
If you're talking about the mephisto academy, that was actually rated around 2000, it was very impressive for its time and way ahead of this.
I'm 33 years old, never played chess. Now in my "mid 30s" I'm starting to shift interest towards chess . I'm little overwhelmed by all those openings and moves to remember. But I will watch your basics videos for sure!
Omg this was also mine, my uncle bought one of those for christmas when I was like 4 and he taught me how to play but I didnt have many people to play with so I always played against the machine
damn you're uncle's awes. 4 years old? that's how people should gift children
My grandfather taught me how to play. During one game he told me where to move....and then scholar's mated me!
Gotta defeat 'em while they're young, right? :)
"How creative, hehe, oh more bad jokes, OH NO I'M MATED! Anton squared me, oh man I just fell for a scholars mate, I just got scholared!"
Did it happen like this?
And show us this again because I think that it's amazing that such a simple yet profoundly advanced device (for it's time) inspired a child and elevated a simple game to a passion that lasted a lifetime. I'm relly curious to see you take level 72. You can try to cut computer's thinking time out of the video.
And my first opponent was my father, who taught me the moves some summer. But he wasn't any kid of serious chess player. He just played a bit as a kid himself. We only played occasionally
I decided to learn more of chess way in teens and then I played ChessMaster on my phone. Still, wasn't very serious about it.

The 10 actually means 1 to 0, so it means you win, and if you lose it shows 01 which is 0 to 1, so it means you lose

nah, john is 2400-2500 according to the video whereas the computers max level is 1650, it wouldnt even be a challenge, also stated in the video is that the comp thinks for a long time at higher levels.

Hi, I start playing chess, after I watch this video. And brought myself a chess computer too. Thank you
13:47 if you moved rook E1 to E5, you could have killed the queen by sacrificing either a horse, a rook, or a bishop...
Krabbypal re5 g5, rxg5 qh6, rg3 (re5 will allow the queens escape to) qh5. Queen escapes or the position will repeat.
William Hitchcock yep, you are right... wow, i did not see that, well played
Krabbypal on the third move, rg8 is better than rg3. I missed it but it will either win the rook, or trade rook and bishop for the queen.
William Hitchcock, ya, but i feel like not a lot of ppl could have figured that out in the middle of a match, under the stress and all
Krabbypal maybe, depends on time controls. I figured the first line out in about 30 seconds. I completely missed rg8 and would have misplayed if someone played it against me
My first opponent was my 12-year-old brother when I was 8. 1963. In 1981 I bought the Great Game Machine and it still works! It played about 1600.
