Beating Everyone with the Same Opening Trap (Stafford Gambit)

    This video features 3 games (played in the same day) in which the white side falls victim to the same simple and devious opening trap in the Stafford Gambit. The trap involves a "fishing pole" idea with an early h5 and Ng4. While the Stafford Gambit is not necessarily a sound opening, it is highly venomous. If white is not prepared, then it can be easy for black to win quite quickly!

    I think the reason why the Stafford Gambit works so well is because the correct way to play looks dangerous and sketchy, whereas the dangerous/sketchy way to play seems like the natural and most solid way. It's super counterintuitive.
    It's very tempting for white to castle kingside because it just looks so natural and obvious. Otherwise, your king is going to stay in the centre for several moves.
    But it's very tough to play pawn to c3 instead, because it effectively means that not only is your king stuck in the centre, but you've also made queenside castling less appealing, due to moving the c-pawn. So it seems like the most dangerous move, and yet it is the safest move.

    Answers to everyone's questions in the comments:
    Q: Why can't white play pawn takes knight on g4?
    A: After black responds pawn takes pawn on g4, it's mate in 4 for black, see 8:55 (Keep watching from this timestamp if you want to see other ways to defend that also fail, and also the best moves to play in the position)
    Q: After queen takes g3 check, why can't white take the queen with the f2 pawn?
    A: That move is illegal. Moving the f-pawn puts white in check from black's bishop on c5, see 0:46

      Because there is a black bishop diagonally across from it and if the pawn is moved, the bishop would take the king, so you can’t move the pawn in order to protect the king and block the bishop from attacking the king.

    Best defence is 9. Pawn e5 to threaten the queen. If pawn is taken by queen , bishop takes knight on g4. If black takes bishop , white rook pins the queen. If pawn is taken by knight , bishop to f4 to take either knight or queen.

    Shouldn't white's H pawn take the knight? That prevents the queen from coming in to attack and allows time to further defend or force black pieces out. Moving the D pawn forward to attack the bishop (defended by queen) is another move I saw; it frees up the pin on the G pawn and allows the king to maneuver out of the way or defend with more pieces

    • @luccubsol

    • @exquizzetmtg2779
      @exquizzetmtg2779 3 года назад

      @@luccubsol looking at it again, I think you cant play it bc it opens up the file for block's rook, and with the bishop and queen controlling diagonals right next to White's king, it's too easy to get checkmate from that position. But this is all assuming black recaptures the pawn. If they do, it would then be white's move, and theres probably something you can do with either of the bishops or maybe moving the king out of the way depending on your pawn structure

    From the thumbnail, the conclusion is, knight as a bait, whenever a pawn or a piece capture it, we can recapture and we just opened our rook and with the help of queen long diagonal, the next move white is dead, you're probably wondering, why can't white just make an escape route ?, because when white realize this threat, there is no way to get out of it because the only pawn move that saves white is pinned to the king by the black bishop, but what if white don't take the knight then ?, Same thing, the rook is just to cover that one square where the queen is going to be putted on, the knight covers the same square so if white don't take they're checkmated, also you can block off the diagonal right ?, Yes, but with a couple of maneuvering, white is either surviving with bad position or will be checkmated again
