Most of this makes sense. Some things I'd be afraid to have my kid do by themselves. If my parents did this for me as a kid, I believe I'd be more independent and confident as an adult.

I agree but many of the things she says are possible because she's privileged and wealthy. Not everyone can have that, in another environment the kid would suffer and feel abandoned

I currently live in France and teach Middle School. 95% of my students age 10-14 take public transport or come on bikes, even in winter. The other 5% walk... and this is a big city, not country side. And the eating... they are only allowed to eat at meals, and boy, do they eat :)

We live in Switzerland and kids as early as 4 years old have to walk on their own to the kindergarten and on to school. My 6 year old has to walk 1km to school on her own. Start taking public transportation very early and no tracking devices or phones.

Nutritionally - that’s not good for that health if they have to go hungry for that long esp while doing school activities. They are still growing & need basic nutrients for the brain & body. Obviously since I see you’re an RN, you understand this 😀 I think using discipline with food - is never a good idea for the long term - can contribute to emotional eating issues in adulthood 🙏🏽

This reaction makes me think that public transportation in San Francisco is as danderous as in India.
Maybe it is, i don't live there to tell. But in Europe it's normal for kids to use public transport at that age.
    Sometimes they even walk!

I am unsure as to why you point out India, the common misconception around the world is that india is unsafe. I have lived all my life in india and have travelled around the world and I find every place to be as unsafe or safe as india. Basically you have to be vigilant no matter where in the world you are bad things happen in the safest of places. Crime rate in public transport is actually suprising to how you may other wise percieve is not so prevalent in India.

In America: everyone is shocked about that.
In Europe: everyone is shocked if you dont parent your kids that way.
Kids go to school when 8 or 9 - even in big citys (using buses, trains, metros). Kids work in clases where they are responsible for the task they do each week (they get a paper with many tasks - they choose when they do which task, And if they do all of them)
Children Go outside playing on Playground by themself with their friends. Yes they Hurt themself sometimes, yes they fail with tasks, yes they are sometimes a little scared of a task. - (As adults we face these situations And Feelings as Well!)
The key is, guiding the children (instead of serve them). HELP them learn things, help them with their Feelings.
No parent Just throws the Kid Out the house "you walk to school Alone now" - we teach the Kids the way many, many months. School Shows them the area around the school. You teach them how to handle different situations (the situations they CAN handle). In puberty you have children that know how to make good decisions, how to handle different situations, and who know when they need to talk to the parents.
The kids learn what they are capable of and when they need Help from adults!

Ladies, you are great moms! Your kids will be resilient and competitive. They will not be the ones living in your basement at 35. They will also thank you for teaching them independence and instilling confidence. Also, it's not called free-range parenting in my country. It is just parenting. I realize US is much more successful economically than Ukraine, it's a great coutry, but for different reasons, not that over sensitivity brought you great success that the whole world praises. You'd rather hear gasps in Ukraine if you said your adult kid is still clinging to mommy too much and is absolutely helpless without a parent. Just an outsiders comment here. Best wishes to everyone here.

I agree!!... I wish there were more "Free Range" parenting here in the US because this generation here has no clue about consequences or accountability!! I raised my kids in the 90's and 2000's in a similar way except the public transportation thing only because we live in a very large city but once they felt confident (early teens) I taught them how to use public transportation and as smart watches weren't a thing they has cell phones for emergencies. My youngest is 19 and lives at home but is independent. Works pays rent and the other 2 are parents themselves, living and working independently. But I raised them to know consequences which is something that is lacking here in the US as parents tend to make excuses for their children. Which is something you'll never see me do and if they were wrong I will make them accountable. Anyway Hello to you in the Ukraine from here in Massachusetts, USA!!!

I believe in modified free range parenting. I would allow the child more freedom as he age. As a child I was given a great deal of freedom. I could go to the park, the library, the movies, etc. by my self. However, if I didn't do my homework I would catch holy hell. The opposite of free range parenting is helicopter parenting. The helicopter parent is so protective of their children that they never learn self sufficiency.

I dont see why everyone is so worried about public transportation. There is a bus driver who is a trained city employee, and the train has cops on it. Your kids are way safer on public transportation than at a park alone.

    • @elyzamarie8209
      @elyzamarie8209 3 года назад +1

Isn't about the bus driver or anything happening on the bus I don't think. It's about who's watching that child getting on & off the bus alone & walking. Too easy for a predator to notice a vulnerable child & their routine & knowing their routine is waiting for public transportation & leaving public transportation alone every day is incredibly dangerous.imagine the bus is late one day & your child is at a bus stop waiting alone while a predator that also rides that bus every day is there waiting at that bus stop too.. Easy to lead them away in the span of that wait on top of a million other possible scenarios. A block in the city for a 10 year old girl being watched getting off the train/bus alone every day is incredibly irresponsible.

With meals it makes sense-you decide what the meal is and the meal time- but you cannot decide if they are hungry or how much they eat. I do believe it's the parent's job to ensure things like homework and lunch are taken care of. Being too much in charge at a young age can give a feeling of insecurity. Parents make big decisions, kids can make small ones.

We worked to keep the school going - cleaning the bathrooms. running an industrial dishwasher, helping the cook, chopping wood, care of garden and animals, own laundry I took long distance bus on holidays. And we were responsible for homewoork, own bedtime. Get too lazy and you get expelled.

My mom did that. If I forget lunch at home it's my problem. I don't agree with that. Lazy parenting. If I don't want to eat something I go hungry. Alright so years later from 18 onwards I was the parent and my mom expected alot more from me than she ever gave me. I won't parent like this. Ridiculous.
I also lived in San Francisco for almost a year and it's not safe for a 10 year old to travel alone.
I can't even go into detail about what all I saw omw.
Also.. at 12 I had to do the shopping and cash my dads cheques at the bank for his workers. I hope this women is watching. I had depression long after... 20s and 30s I have anxiety. Look at what you are doing. You are doing this to your kids. Both my parents are deceased now and I'm left with all of this.

She’s very smart about these details, but when she said she doesn’t put her 5th grader & other children in danger??? She’s doing it on a daily. How many times on the news or popular crime shows do you hear the report on the abduction &/ or murder prefaced by someone in the family or a neighbor saying, “This is a quiet neighborhood. You’d never expect something like this to happen here...”?
Also, NOW this mom has just advertised that her kids are walking to & fro, & most predators are pretty smart.
Also, kids do need to learn how to fail, but to sit there & watch your kid climb up a slide or whatever, potentially about to break a bone or worse??
Don’t get it twisted. I’m in massive disagreement on coddling & the typical (average) parenting of millennials, but this type of parenting is on a different level. I suppose each to his or her own & deal with the consequences.

As a kid I had to use a bus /public transport and I was at least 7 years old and not the only one from my school so it felt normal at that time. It is not a big city but small town...but still I realise how alone and by myself I was. At least my anxiety has a sence now. It is not healthy to leave a small kid to do all this things by themselves.

  • @katwmn2524

Free range parenting these days is foolish. This is not the 80's or even 90's. We live in a different time and place. I had that kind of freedom being raised by single mom that did the best she could raising 3 children alone...working all the time. So we had no choice but for her to trust us. Sometimes as a result of that we got in trouble and there were consequences. Oh and as far as abduction goes....in this day and age, people are always watching you and your regular routines especially children (especially because of social media sources like KidsTube , TikTok, Facebook).
