My sister and I live 260 miles from each other. We had a habit of talking for about an hour each day during covid. Now we walk together connecting our phones and ear buds. She said that she hated walking alone everyday and wasn’t motivated. I walk 5 miles or more everyday. So now with technology we walk and talk sharing family stories, books and the things we see along the way. Win Win for the both of us. We are in our late 70s.
I do the exact same thing but with my best friend, my dog. I also talk in the phone with my BFF as I hike. I’m 61 and look 50 and it’s because I’ve been a long time walker. Blessings to you for continued good health
This is such a great idea! Both of my sisters moved states away this year and we are missing each other. We're talking on the phone everyday, but this would enhance those phone calls. Benefits includes, be able to walk at your own pace, sitting and resting for sister who needs that, maybe even inviting friends to join us on something like a conference call. I walk 8-10 miles a day. I do a 2 hour walk everyday in the morning. And then do several more shorter walks through out the day. It is cheaper than a psychiatrist, cheaper than a cardiologist and cheaper than a gym membership. It is free and so good for you!
Wife and I walk 7+ miles a day for over 30 years. Greatest habit we formed. Keeps us physicians fit, spiritually fit (prayer walks), socially fit (connects with wife and friends), and mentally fit (learn observing nature). At 63 I still feel young and alive, much of it due to walking.
I am into daily walking as as a rule. I live in an independant living facility, but although there are activities here, l prefer to go out walking, and even though the weather mi be unfavorable, l dress accordingly and head out to the scenic places around here like along the Bow River pathway, or the Big Hill Creek pathway, two lovely places to walk. Unfortunately, nobody in the building, of aboout 80 plus residents do this, as they say they are not able to walk far, like l do, so l go by myself, listening to prerecorded music through my headphones. Hopefully, l'll be able to do this for many more years. I have congestive heart failure, so this will limit me in the future , but l'll enjoy my wallking as long as possible. Suzi Q.😅😊❤
I retired December 2022 , now I’m bored , slowly becoming depressed. My outlet has been walking every day with my two dogs, morning and late afternoon I am isolated with no friends or family around me ,so it’s great to past the time of day with people I’ve met on my walks
I’m sorry to hear you are feeling this way. Have you considered visiting your local library to see if there are maybe book clubs or other groups or activities that you might be interested in? Another great way to meet people is by volunteering. Even if you are a little ways from your nearest town, I’m sure there are some agencies that need some help such as a food bank, the chamber of commerce, church or a seniors home where there are people just like you who are lonely and would love some companionship. Numerous studies show that helping others actually provides huge positive benefits to the person doing the helping. Good Luck!

Love this! I used to walk 3-5 miles per day. Walking longer was something I looked forward to in retirement. I suddenly developed a limp and walking became increasingly more difficult and then nearly impossible. I was diagnosed with MS. I’ve been working so hard to get my ability back and thankfully it’s working. I use trekking poles and am up to 2 miles but I won’t stop. Walking has always been my way to clear my head and something I very much enjoy both alone or with friends. I won’t give it up!
Best of luck to you, indeed never give up and check what in your diet progresses the disease, I have heard so much about dietary-related illness. Im no expert but I read and listen so much- there always seems to be links (even if its personalized food sensitivities)

Hi Mel Robins- I am a trauma therapist and recommend walking to all my clients. When we walk outside we switch from micro view to macro view which is counter active to fight or flight where we focus in on pinpointing our enemy - it sends signals to our amygdala that we are safe. The macro view also encourages horizon view where our eyes move back and forth from left to right. This eye movement alternately stimulates left brain and right brain and balances sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and brings left and right brain online equally- which we call the wise mind. Walking also triggers chemicals that create a sense of well being, and pauses production of corticosteroids as these glands are mutually exclusive.
I am 86. walk 5 miles/5 days/wk. Do Yoga. Vegetarian. Sleep 6-8 hours/day. No precooked, packaged foods. No salt, no sugar. No bread and rice. No alcohol, no smoking no drugs. I keep track of politics. I vote. Retired. Immigrant. Landed in the US with $2.75 in my pocket. Got a degree, Got a job. Married. Two children - Doctors. All paid. Anyone can do it.
I do custodial work in a high school and already have 10,000 steps in and 3 hours left of work. I love walking. I listen to your podcasts while working.
I walk twice a day covering five miles. I love it. I’m 68 years old and I’m a painter and a writer and walking is something that grounds me and centers me. I get great ideas for art and writing and it is a form of meditation for me. I was a runner for many years and a speed walker so I hope I’m in good shape. Walking is great for weight control and it eases the mind. I love walking and yes get off your butts and get out there. I go alone for my walks because I enjoy my own company plus I walk at a fast pace being race walker. It’s a work out for me too.

I have MS and I started walking daily with assistant of my cane in March 2022 for about two blocks in my neighborhood. I kept adding more blocks every week and by August of 2022 I was walking two miles a day. We have a lot of hills in my neighborhood so I started using hiking sticks instead of my cane. I can’t stop walking now because I’m so thankful to God that I can walk again so I continue to walk everyday. I am now part of a neighborhood walking group and I walk everyday for 4.5 miles a day. I have made a lot of great friends and my legs have became very strong and I no longer need any hiking sticks to aid me to walk anymore.
Thanks for the inspiration! I went for a walk this evening. I have experienced how effective walking is. Seven years ago, I was incapacitated due to being surrounded by stressful, unsupportive, and psychologically manipulative people, and that was aggravating my autoimmune disease. I couldn't even walk up the 6 stairs in my house without resting in the middle. Then I started putting one foot in front of the other. One day walking to the mailbox, the next, trying to walk to the neighbor's mailbox. As time went on, I was walking from one mailbox to another until I made it to a half mile, then a mile. Then a mile 2x a day. Then 3 miles a day. Then I started hiking. I joined Meetup groups that lead hikes and was soon hiking 30 miles a week. I hiked all the trails in the Smoky Mountains. I'm now a member of the '900' mile club for hiking every trail in the Smokys. Due to the hiking and time to think for hours on the trail while surrounded by nature, I got stronger and got brave enough to leave all the unhealthy relationships around me. Now I am a completely different person, and so much healthier physically and emotionally. I know walking works. When I don't walk, I can feel myself slipping into depression again. So I'm glad I went for a walk this evening! (I'm in my mid 50's.)

I walked three times per day. In the morning, I wanted to get my dosage of vitamin D3 and meet ppl. My second walk is at 1 pm after my meal. My third walk is at the sunset, I get the infrared from the sun helps me to sleep better. Total about 6-7 miles per day. I also have a clean diet and intermittent fasting. I am fortunately living in Maui where is endless sunshine and fresh air. I’m 57, I feel fantastic every day. 😊
A 5 mile walk every morning with my dog, Tess, is how I start my day. It is beautiful early in the morning in Denver. My doctor says I will be walking 5 miles a day when I am 90. I am an older woman and have never had any medical problems and have been walking like this since I was 10 years old.
Do you have issues with your dog's paws getting tinder because when I try to walk more than we already do they get raw paw pads. Of course we have to walk mainly on the concrete because where I live, apparently the city doesn't spray any of the grass and everywhere you turn has stickers.
Mel, 2 miles is super easy! I do a 2-mile walk every single morning as soon as I wake up around 5am. I take a 32 ounce water bottle with me and don’t return home until I’ve consumed it all. Then my morning coffee is my reward! It takes me about 35 minutes and the early morning is so peaceful. It’s the best part of the day!❤

My dog and I take a 2.4 mile walk every morning, weather permitting. Since he's a male, we do a lot of stopping during the first half mile or so, then we get down to a more steady pace. He's my motivator and I have to say, he's a great listener and companion.
Yes!! Dogs are great listeners, they help keep your blood pressure under control because they love you no matter what.....it's when they start talking back that you have to worry😂 (just joking)

I can confirm everything you're saying I'm a walker that's what I have been called. I had many days when I would walk all day long to help me through anxiety. I would out walk my thoughts what I am saying is the first few miles the thoughts would come up to be witnessed as I continued to walk a beautiful PEACE would come over me.I became and still am addicted to what some call WALKERS HIGH. I think that people who don't like walking probably experience pain while they walk. I know that was the case with me. A friend of mine was always begging me to go for a walk in the woods with her and her dogs, and the few times I did I had pain in my lower back and shins. Then I lost 50 pounds, and now she doesn't have to ask me for a walk- I ask her. I still have weight to lose, but that initial loss took some weight off my back, literally, and I now have so much less pain. A walk boosts my mood- I get a chance to chat with my friend, and I get to forest bathe. It's been a truly excellent addition to my life.
Another reason is many are living in a location they do not like, and there is no place to walk. It's all ugly outside, and this city I live in is terrible. But i can't move. I'm 54, never married, failed career, no kids, no friends, no hope, stuck in a terrible city, hopeless. I want to "go" early....... I used to walk all the time when I was younger, but then made a poor choice in cities to move to , now I am stuck in a place I hate and do not want to gout into. I'll just fade away early in my hole..... I'll never find happiness :(
I'm 73, my dream is to travel abroad. Realized, that would require more walking/energy than I was could muster. Afraid, I was just too tired all-the-time to enjoy traveling and make new friends. Five weeks ago I gave up alcohol and started walking twice a day, using my free weights, balance board, resistance bands. Some results: fog lifted/mental clarity; I'm pretty again my eyes/face/skin look fab; first time in 10+ years good sleep; my legs look great. I'm now addicted to walking. Gotta go get my fix.🚶♀
I'm almost 70. 69 now I started walking 2 miles 40 minutes every day because I was depressed. I'm now going on 3rd month and it has become a habit and am going to increase from 2 to 3 miles looking for a new walking route to inspire me. I use an All trails ap on my phone and it tracks my progress and inspires me. I love watching the miles and hours stacking up.
That's only half of it dude. Get outside! Find a route that takes you through trees, forest, fresh air whatever. You'll notice the difference. Treadmill is for rainy/snowy/stormy days.
A month ago ,just started walking a couple blocks every morning very early . A 10-15 min walk. Now I have a compulsion to do it every day. I wake up , get dressed and go. Nothing to eat. No coffee. Just out the door. While I walk, I pick up garbage off the street while going around the apt complexes in my neighborhood. I've also found some cool free things people leave out for others. I think this really helps my arthritis too.
I walk sins 30 years once a week for 20 to 24 km. And last seven years I began to walk barefoot 🦶 and this helps me very much to do my weekly activities. I work 12 or 13 hours a day. /without home activities cocking,cleaning…./. I absorb the energy from the nature. Everyone says to me: you are looking so fresh and this is true❤I always thank the God for creating the nature 🙏🏔
Started power walking during pandemic just to get a sense of freedom, but it turned out to be the happiest accident in all kinds of ways: 1. I lost weight 2. I built muscle tone 3. I felt a boost in energy level 4. I felt happy and motivated 5. My mind was cleared 6. I got a boost to my immunity 7. Felt more flexible too. And felt so much more refreshed overall! Also learned that your body will adapt to whatever you push it to as long as you do it gradually! I m now up to 25 miles per week🥳
Wow this has popped up just when I needed it. I have high blood pressure, depression, and a few other health issues. My Dr was telling me to get walking hard when you feel shitty physically and mentally but I have just started small steps and back gardening which I love.
I'm one of those people who doesn't like walking 🤣😂 that's because I prefer to run or swim. BUT I have been walking more in the beautiful woodland near where I live. Today I was feeling dark feelings of stress and disappointment so I decided to stick on this podcast and go for a walk! I fed and patted a horse, I stopped and found a new delicious blackberry patch and butterflies bumped into my head. I looked at the little caterpillars and spiders. I felt the childlike wonder again, a world full of possibilities again. Fresh air in my lungs. It was so wonderful to be free for those moments. I even felt like lying in the grass and watching a plane go by. Now I'm going to go and tackle some paperwork I have been avoiding knowing that I just did something beneficial for my mind and body 😊

I’ve walked pretty much every day all my life and will do till the day I transition, halfway I sit barefoot on the grass for 30 minutes and it’s a game changer for emotional well-being and grounding , trainers have taken out the earthing connection , add that to your daily walk and your sorted for life 💚

I rescued a blue heeler mix, and she just LOVES long walks. We walk at least 2 very long walks a day. I rescued her and now that's how she is rescuing me, by making me walk SO MUCH. That's awesome
What I learned walking average of 10km a day this past month: 1) It does reduce stress and make you sleep better. Lowering cortisol, lowers depression and things like this. You can walk and listen to podcasts, music , or just clear your head. 2) If you want to lose fat you have to keep a pretty fast pace, which can be hard without a good gait cycle or windlass mechanism, good posture, shoes etc. It won't make you as hungry as running and you can do more of it. 3) If you have flat feet, consider strengthening your arches, and learning not to heel strike to avoid stress on your knees and spine. Try barefoot shoes or walking barefoot but do the transitions slowly to avoid injury. 4) If you plan on going for really long walks but just starting out ease into it by increasing distance 10% each week. You can also split your walks into morning and evening. 5) Consider wicking socks or something that will absorb moisture to avoid blisters. Take care of your feet. 6) Do stretches and if you can get a good sports/back massage where they target pressure points. Again if you have flat feet and do too much your back will take a toll and you will need rest or relief. It prevents injury and helps you recover. Foam roller or massage gun is also good. 7) Remember to take rest days. Eat healthy, get a good electrolyte powder. 8) On rainy days you can still walk on a treadmill. It has the advantage that you can monitor your heartrate and you can adjust your incline. 9) Walking combines well with swimming, as well as strength training.
@DanielWillen Thank you for the tips, I justa started my 10 km everyday for 30 days challenge, must say takes some effort but on day 5 (today) feels good. I'm discovering parts of Johannesburg city and finding it quite relaxing at the end of each session. My leg muscles are sore, I'm stretching after every walk, but will also consider getting some massage. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, gives me more perspective to consider through my journey.
I never walk very fast at all. Perhaps 3 miles an hour max. However because I walk for 3 hours every day (3 x 1 hour walks) in 2021 I lost 3 clothes sizes In 6 weeks. Got down to the size I am now (uk size 6 to 8 and US size 2-4).
Mel this was the sign last push and confirmation I needed to get up off my ass and take a walk everyday. I deal with anxiety and depression diagnosed with postpartum depression almost three years after having my son as well being diagnosed with ADHD about three months ago. I took medication for depression and anxiety for a while (which helped) now I'm starting ADHD meds but I'm still not where I want or need to be. I was telling my husband tonight that I need to do something different with my self care, diet, quiet time and taking a walk, because when I put more emphasis on those things I feel better and show up better for myself and my family.

Haven't watched this video yet but, i will say since I have dogs and also know how beneficial it is to take said dogs for individual walks to get away from each other and to get away from the house. So I end up walking about three miles every day between all of the dogs. This has become my favorite part of the day. It is just so peaceful when I'm out on those walks and it's just me and my buddies and it's just such a great thing. One of the many ways that having dogs is greatly beneficial because without that I don't think I would go on those walks just for myself. Dogs seem to be the only thing I even give a s*** about anymore. They don't manipulate they don't lie they don't gaslight they don't do any of that nonsense they just want to love you and want you to love them back. I can definitely handle that.
I used to go on really long walks during the pandemic shutdown. Although I did it with headphones on listening to many, MANY different TED talks including yours! I was going thru the breakup of a decades long marriage when my ex left me suddenly with next to no explanation other than he was "unhappy" and had been for years. I was shocked, devastated and basically an emotional wreck! Those walks were definitely a great help to my mental state! I also started doing a lot of yard work and I found that doing physical activity outside really helped me emotionally. I still cried every day but all that physical activity not only raised my fitness level, it helped me process my many, MANY emotions! So I am not surprised by what this doc is saying. I know I'm not as active now and I will make a pack with myself to walk more and to9 do a bunch of short walks or short bursts of physical activity throughout the day!
Walking changed my life. I had gained 90 lbs after abt 6 yrs of tragedy after tragedy. I started it to TRY to start to lose weight. What I found, by accident, that it COMPLETELY changed, not only my body, my health but also my mental state. Years later I can't believe which I am now...inside and out
Today marks day 27 of walking 10k steps a day and I feel amazing. I work from home now and its just what i needed. My goal was to do it for 30 days only but I feel too good to stop now.

I absolutely love walking and walk every single day ( luckily I have 2 dogs which means I'm out in all weathers all year long) in the UK we are having lots of rain in what's now supposed to be our summer time but walking in the rain, in the woods with the gentle patter of raindrops on leaves is beautiful and it makes me so happy and relaxed. I have heard how it helps prevent brain ageing as when we walk the brain is so fired up and tuned in ❤

I have a desk job. Once I am in a project and totally focusing on it, I lose all track of time. I have a Fitbit. It reminds me to get out of my chair once an hour to do at least 250 steps. This can take a minute or two. Those 2 minutes allow me to go back to my project with a clear mind and ready to focus once again. This is especially beneficial when I am struggling on a project or frustrated by it.
I started walking 20 years ago when my son had a mental health crisis and life was almost unbearable. For the first year my brain just buzzed during the whole walk - I could feel it processing stress. Now walking is an essential part of my life. I can't image life without it.

I am 74 years old and I am totally blind I wish I had someone that could take me for a walk daily but what I do currently I walk on one spot 10 km it takes me 2 hours three time is a week I don’t mind I feel wow I am happy in my younger days are used to run marathons as a blind person 2:16
I walk with my son and our dogs everyday. He’s 15 and it’s great bonding time, I know both of us will remember once he is grown and moved away. We’re lucky to live in beautiful woodland. There’s always a point on the walk where we stop and listen and absorb the nature around us. Yoga taught me how to feel present in the moment, not to rush through to the end and how to let go of that which doesn’t serve me. I apply the same mental approach to our walks. It felt like a chore before I did that.
Hard to think of myself at 65 as one of those older people…walk and work out everyday…weights, pilates, chair yoga. Im fitter faster and more engaged cognitively than I was in my 30s! Just as an adjunct…the cognitive benefits of walking in a fasted state…amazing!

Are used to walk every day just 20-30 mins. During Covid, I was going crazy so I had to walk and I tried doing 20 minutes a day for 2020 and upping it each year. Well, for some reason I’ve fallen off the habit and I’m totally miserable. OK that’s a overstatement, but I definitely need to get back to it. A little goes a long way, but the biggest part is doing it every day. Thank you for this podcast to remind me of why I need to do this. My aunt is 89 and walks as.much as 6 or more miles a day. Not including all the other things she is in involved in. She even mows her own yard and gardens and is active in the community. Proof in the pudding !!! She is a tiny firecracker !!

as a person who is a work in progress from early childhood developmental issues, I absolutely dislike walking when I am in my negative state. when I am in a good space, walking isn’t an issue. I don’t use the same reasoning. The trick for me is to USE walking and bilateral movements to help process and increase my body functions and Silence the Saboteur in me that wants me to stay unwell. ❤

I always loved walking. But at 11:46 at 57 I got a problem, rectal pain with sitting. Now at 80 it hurts me to walk in rectal area. I love walking. I always walked everyday twice a day. Now I can’t stand the pain. Any suggestions? I’m 80. I’m losing my memory & im so depressed. I started talking to a psychologist, but she doesn’t have any ideas.

I have cardiomyopathy...inherited.Its reduced the severity.... New it was going to catch up with me one day ..which was my motivation 25 yrs sgo. When my mum had a dudden cardiac death. I have been voluntarily sedentary for over a year now, and let me tell you, it’s done me *no favors* - I’m in the worst physical health I have ever been. Partially due to myself working on my mental health and stress in my life in the last year and a half, my physical health took a backseat. I need to do better and show up for myself so that going forward at 35, I can live a longer, more fulfilling life for myself and my family. Walking massively helps with stress and mental health. Cortisol level decreases and all good chemicals go up. If you do it for at least an hour in one go (endorphins don't get released until we have walked for at least 30 mins so an hours walk you only create endorphins for 30 mins) you will feel amazing!

I walk my dog every day but unfortunately my cardiologist said that's "not really a walk"......I've added treadmill to my exercising but never really got over his statement. I love to walk and am slowly considering walking her (my dog) then going back out (before it gets winter again) and walk myself for as much time as I want!!!! without stopping to sniff etc. Yes, I love to walk and wish more people would do the same. I am in my best health when doing daily fast walks combined with runs in spurts with my headphones on. Up and down hills and running through woods. Heart rate up and down great for heart health ! I combine with healthy eating for the most part! I haven’t walked much in months as physical issues but will resume asap! I’m turning 65 in August and need to get it together ! I started walking twice a day and I'm doing minimum 5,000 steps with a goal of 10,000 and I feel way better. I'm also doing the carnivore diet and can see changes, my energy is way up. Thanks for the info, good to know I'm on the right path. ❤
Me & Hubby walk 1hr every morning before work. Up & out at 5.30 whilst the kids sleep. Not always easy to do if tired BUT always feel better. My husband has crippling anxiety and at the moment depression due to grief, I have busy busy days so it helps mentally x

I have learned that when I walk it decreases my anxiety and and my depression.. if I go for a week without taking some kind of a walk depression sets in big-time even though I'm on medication so that little 30-minute walk helps to beat that.. matter of fact when this podcast started I started listening and decided and got inspired to go do a little 20-minute walk before going to get my friend from work that I get a ride everyday when I pick him up he was depressed so I told him I have a cure for that,will you trust me, just for 10 minutes? he said yes so we drove to the nearby park and walked around the park at first he was hesitant but I said it will make you feel better and then he actually opened up and talk to me about something that was bothering him and said he felt much better by the time I got him home so it did both of us a world of good just to take a little short walk together and talk❤❤❤❤❤
When my dogs transferred (4 months apart), I just couldn’t get out of just not feel like doing anything. I actually find that by my walking, it’s gotten me back on track. I now do about 10 miles 4 or 5 times each week along the beach. What keeps me going is getting a few books “listened to” each week as well. It’s easier on the body as well. I just do anything I can to understand this thing called life. ❤🐾❤️

Found Leslie Sansome videos here, and started her walking program, and after just three months I lost a total of twenty-one pounds, along with real simple cut backs like less sugar and processed foods. Walking cut my appetite and desire for fattening foods. Friends that are on ozempic don't even come close to my results, and have discontinued use and lost more pounds just by walking. Mother nature sure is amazing that's for sure, and it doesn't cost anything except time. Its been a year now, lost thirty-eight pounds and maintaining.
Walking really is amazing. In 2021 I walked 20k steps a day (3 seperate hours of walking) and in 6 weeks I dropped 3 clothes sizes. Going down to UK size 6 to 8 which is US size 2-4. This was combined with 1500 calories of plant exclusive diet every day

You talk about having an epiphany as a listener as we listen to this. I had mine yesterday. I don't know why. I walked for 4hrs in my kitchen/living room. Today I found "The GreenWay" a walking path that runs around my city. It's only 2.5 miles but is being developed. I found the peace of the countryside, watching squirrels, the rushing streams and a collection of butterflies. The forestation got me away from the American town. As an Englishman, where I lived in a pure countryside area, it made me feel like home .

I'm an old person (72 years old) & live in Alaska. When its winter, I still sometimes walk outside, but it is more difficult. As an alternative activity, I stay inside and walk up and down my stairs.
Great podcast, I love walking, where I originally live we had to walk everywhere in hot humid weather. Now living in UK for tbe past 50 years I walk everyday atleast once a day or 2 to 3 shorter walks. I am blessed living in village, woodlands around, birds small animals see & hear has help me to a much healthier mental & physical health. 69yrs young but felt I am youthful and full of vitality. Sad when out walking I often don't see more than a handful or none peop,e of all ages. Walking in fesh air, sunshine & amazing woodland and it cost nothing but improves your mind, body & soul. Come on people get walking.

Love this conversation! I walk twice a day for stress reduction and many health reasons. The time out in nature is very calming and creates an environment of gratitude. A free pedometer app tracks your daily steps. You can set your daily goal and it will track and show you how many steps and how many days you met your goal. Walking not only becomes a habit, but a competition with yourself to continue to meet or exceed your goal. You just have to keep your phone on you! I love my running belts that hold my phone as I move all day.
It's amazing to learn of the benefits of walking. I walk 6000 steps appx everyday ,in the morning. A coiple of rounds in the big park. We are blessed with a 10-acres Wonders's Park in New Bombay,Nerul,just infront of our house, A well designed Theme Park ,it offers morning walkers special permission in the morning ,for less than ten dollars an year. Walking has always brought me peace and has helped me in difficult moments in my life, years ago with my father's illness and now for me, facing chemotherapy far from my home and family. I just listened to this podcast while I was walking, giving a scientific explanation to the benefits that I already felt when walking outdoors... and after listening to it I had to increase my daily steps as advised by the expert.
Walk, stroll, amble, saunter, hike, promenade. Really good point that settlements need to be designed to make it easy to go for a walk. Eg having a corner shop nearby, wide pavements and safe nice parks nearby.

My grandparents immigrated from England in 1918. They were great walkers. My mom walked with her dad to the local library weekly, a five mile loop. My grandad walked daily, my mom and her sisters walked daily, and my mothers 4 daughters are all walkers. Some of my fondest times spent with my mom were while out on a walk with her. My own kids and I walked everyehere. We lived in a small walkable town in Washington State. Bald eagles circled overhead, the tall conifers had wonderful hiking trails, deer leapt across the girest paths, and berries grew abundantly in late summer. They are now all grown, but they carry on the walking tradition. I am 74 and proudly wear the title of the quirky lady who walks everyday, rain, wind, and sun. I carry a UV umbrella now, but care little what others think. At least 3 miles a day. My blood pressure, my cholerserol levels, my pulse, my glucose levels all healthy. Depression is rare. Exercise diffuses stress. I talk to God, I love being out under the sky, cloud gazing, puppy petting, encounters with others out and about, and always return home happy. It is my daily ritual, a simple great pleasure. I also think deeply about things, and compose poems in my mind...walking just unwinds me in all sorts of wonderful ways. I enjoyed your feed back. Mostly Its just become a part of my daily life. My mom continued her walks until a bad fall broke her hip at age 90. She rapidly declined after that, and passed away at 93. Thank you Mom, for teaching me the simple pleasure of going for a walk.
I do morning walking daily with my husband for about 1.30 hours, 7 Km, and more than 10,000 steps. We really love it! ❤️ Thanks for sharing the benefits of walking. It even makes us love and motivated to make it as our daily habit.

Walking 2 miles in the morning outside (and this is in Chicago suburbs even in winter) a day isn’t much Mel. Kick yourself out the door in the morning and it’s done in 30/40 minutes if it’s a pleasant walk thru your neighborhood.😊 or split it in an am/pm break thru the day. I know from sometimes having to skip my morning habit. It TRULY makes a difference. If I don’t do my am walk, my ENERGY flags by 3/4pm….I totally agree with this..🎉🎉🎉 NOW you need to interview Dr. Peter Attia and share this insightful information. He does give credence to walking but I think he underestimates the benefit to your emotions. Totally agree, depending on your day, it makes sense that you can vary the type of your walk (fast or slower, creative or problem solver or just a soak in your surroundings or for discovery of something you hadn’t previously noticed?). And I bought his book while listening to this. ❤
Totally agree! I feel like walking is the first easy step a person can do to break out of a funk! It helps to release so much pent up anxiety and it helps you sleep better. The fresh air and exercise feels great! The time to yourself and the way you feel your muscles tighten and feel stronger and for people that desperately need SOMETHING to feel proud of themselves for, walking is one of the best things to do. It seems like you always walk further than you intended and you come back feeling amazing and think "Whoa! I walked a mile? It didn't feel like it!"
It's 100F in Texas now, plus the index is 5 degrees more or less. I move/walk indoors daily also some light strength exercises for my 74th summer to help my muscles & bones. I do this throughout the day & night. Never been depressed.I also have hobby I 😉 enjoy. Thanks😊
Thank you for this! I’ve always intuitively known that walking is not only good for health but actually essential. I didn’t own a car until I was 27 so I walked and/or used public transit all he time. In midlife I enjoyed hiking with friends. But those friends gave up walking and I didn’t feel safe in the woods alone. Then I experienced sudden catastrophic vision loss in my early 50s and had to give up driving. I lived in a suburb with a walking/bike path, a small park with a lake, near public transit and within walking distance of shops, banks, restaurants and a library. So I went back to the lifestyle I had when I was young. I’m 72 now. My husband and I moved to a suburb with similar amenities. He too has had to give up driving due to vision loss. He is ten years older than I and severely arthritic, but I’ve convinced him to walk with me. He is much slower than I but it’s a bonding experience for us. We walk 1/2 mile to a grocery store. He takes a break while I shop. Then we walk home again. I think this is the best he can do. I can easily walk three miles in about an hour depending on weather. But I have no one to walk with. All but one of my age peers are semi-invalids, obese and sedentary. My one friend who likes to walk lives in another city and is not inclined to drive to my neighborhood to walk with me. You’ve given me the idea to recruit walking partners on a local social media platform called Nextdoor. I don’t mind walking on my own but I do get lonely.
I love walking outdoors. I really being serious since June. I try to walk 3 miles ; goal is 5miles. Mentally I feel so much better when I walk outside. I just always under estimate how good walking is for our health.

My sister and I live 260 miles from each other. We had a habit of talking for about an hour each day during covid. Now we walk together connecting our phones and ear buds. She said that she hated walking alone everyday and wasn’t motivated. I walk 5 miles or more everyday. So now with technology we walk and talk sharing family stories, books and the things we see along the way. Win Win for the both of us. We are in our late 70s.

This is such a great idea! Both of my sisters moved states away this year and we are missing each other. We're talking on the phone everyday, but this would enhance those phone calls. Benefits includes, be able to walk at your own pace, sitting and resting for sister who needs that, maybe even inviting friends to join us on something like a conference call. I walk 8-10 miles a day. I do a 2 hour walk everyday in the morning. And then do several more shorter walks through out the day. It is cheaper than a psychiatrist, cheaper than a cardiologist and cheaper than a gym membership. It is free and so good for you!
Wife and I walk 7+ miles a day for over 30 years. Greatest habit we formed. Keeps us physicians fit, spiritually fit (prayer walks), socially fit (connects with wife and friends), and mentally fit (learn observing nature). At 63 I still feel young and alive, much of it due to walking.

I am into daily walking as as a rule. I live in an independant living facility, but although there are activities here, l prefer to go out walking, and even though the weather mi be unfavorable, l dress accordingly and head out to the scenic places around here like along the Bow River pathway, or the Big Hill Creek pathway, two lovely places to walk. Unfortunately, nobody in the building, of aboout 80 plus residents do this, as they say they are not able to walk far, like l do, so l go by myself, listening to prerecorded music through my headphones. Hopefully, l'll be able to do this for many more years. I have congestive heart failure, so this will limit me in the future , but l'll enjoy my wallking as long as possible. Suzi Q.😅😊❤

Hello. Try joining a gym. You will meet many friends at your local church. Library book clubs. Volunteer at your local animal shelter.
I’m sorry to hear you are feeling this way. Have you considered visiting your local library to see if there are maybe book clubs or other groups or activities that you might be interested in? Another great way to meet people is by volunteering. Even if you are a little ways from your nearest town, I’m sure there are some agencies that need some help such as a food bank, the chamber of commerce, church or a seniors home where there are people just like you who are lonely and would love some companionship. Numerous studies show that helping others actually provides huge positive benefits to the person doing the helping. Good Luck!

Love this! I used to walk 3-5 miles per day. Walking longer was something I looked forward to in retirement. I suddenly developed a limp and walking became increasingly more difficult and then nearly impossible. I was diagnosed with MS. I’ve been working so hard to get my ability back and thankfully it’s working. I use trekking poles and am up to 2 miles but I won’t stop. Walking has always been my way to clear my head and something I very much enjoy both alone or with friends. I won’t give it up!

Hi Mel Robins- I am a trauma therapist and recommend walking to all my clients. When we walk outside we switch from micro view to macro view which is counter active to fight or flight where we focus in on pinpointing our enemy - it sends signals to our amygdala that we are safe. The macro view also encourages horizon view where our eyes move back and forth from left to right. This eye movement alternately stimulates left brain and right brain and balances sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and brings left and right brain online equally- which we call the wise mind.
Walking also triggers chemicals that create a sense of well being, and pauses production of corticosteroids as these glands are mutually exclusive.

I am 86. walk 5 miles/5 days/wk. Do Yoga. Vegetarian. Sleep 6-8 hours/day. No precooked, packaged foods. No salt, no sugar.
No bread and rice. No alcohol, no smoking no drugs. I keep track of politics. I vote. Retired. Immigrant. Landed in the US with $2.75 in my pocket. Got a degree, Got a job. Married. Two children - Doctors. All paid. Anyone can do it.

I walk twice a day covering five miles. I love it. I’m 68 years old and I’m a painter and a writer and walking is something that grounds me and centers me. I get great ideas for art and writing and it is a form of meditation for me. I was a runner for many years and a speed walker so I hope I’m in good shape. Walking is great for weight control and it eases the mind. I love walking and yes get off your butts and get out there. I go alone for my walks because I enjoy my own company plus I walk at a fast pace being race walker. It’s a work out for me too.
I am an artist and a writer also. Walking is a form of meditation. Art is also a form of moving meditation. It was nice to hear from another long time walker. Have a great day!

I have MS and I started walking daily with assistant of my cane in March 2022 for about two blocks in my neighborhood. I kept adding more blocks every week and by August of 2022 I was walking two miles a day. We have a lot of hills in my neighborhood so I started using hiking sticks instead of my cane. I can’t stop walking now because I’m so thankful to God that I can walk again so I continue to walk everyday. I am now part of a neighborhood walking group and I walk everyday for 4.5 miles a day. I have made a lot of great friends and my legs have became very strong and I no longer need any hiking sticks to aid me to walk anymore.

Thanks for the inspiration! I went for a walk this evening. I have experienced how effective walking is. Seven years ago, I was incapacitated due to being surrounded by stressful, unsupportive, and psychologically manipulative people, and that was aggravating my autoimmune disease. I couldn't even walk up the 6 stairs in my house without resting in the middle. Then I started putting one foot in front of the other. One day walking to the mailbox, the next, trying to walk to the neighbor's mailbox. As time went on, I was walking from one mailbox to another until I made it to a half mile, then a mile. Then a mile 2x a day. Then 3 miles a day. Then I started hiking. I joined Meetup groups that lead hikes and was soon hiking 30 miles a week. I hiked all the trails in the Smoky Mountains. I'm now a member of the '900' mile club for hiking every trail in the Smokys. Due to the hiking and time to think for hours on the trail while surrounded by nature, I got stronger and got brave enough to leave all the unhealthy relationships around me. Now I am a completely different person, and so much healthier physically and emotionally. I know walking works. When I don't walk, I can feel myself slipping into depression again. So I'm glad I went for a walk this evening! (I'm in my mid 50's.)

I walked three times per day. In the morning, I wanted to get my dosage of vitamin D3 and meet ppl. My second walk is at 1 pm after my meal. My third walk is at the sunset, I get the infrared from the sun helps me to sleep better. Total about 6-7 miles per day. I also have a clean diet and intermittent fasting. I am fortunately living in Maui where is endless sunshine and fresh air. I’m 57, I feel fantastic every day. 😊

A 5 mile walk every morning with my dog, Tess, is how I start my day. It is beautiful early in the morning in Denver. My doctor says I will be walking 5 miles a day when I am 90. I am an older woman and have never had any medical problems and have been walking like this since I was 10 years old.
Do you have issues with your dog's paws getting tinder because when I try to walk more than we already do they get raw paw pads. Of course we have to walk mainly on the concrete because where I live, apparently the city doesn't spray any of the grass and everywhere you turn has stickers.

Mel, 2 miles is super easy! I do a 2-mile walk every single morning as soon as I wake up around 5am. I take a 32 ounce water bottle with me and don’t return home until I’ve consumed it all. Then my morning coffee is my reward! It takes me about 35 minutes and the early morning is so peaceful. It’s the best part of the day!❤

I grew up in a very chaotic household. I developed a love for walking because that was the one thing that gave me temporary freedoms and peace. To this day I enjoy walking
My dog and I take a 2.4 mile walk every morning, weather permitting. Since he's a male, we do a lot of stopping during the first half mile or so, then we get down to a more steady pace. He's my motivator and I have to say, he's a great listener and companion.

My little dog walked and hiked with me for almost 15 yrs. We recently lost him and miss him dearly! We will definitely get another fitness partner.

I can confirm everything you're saying I'm a walker that's what I have been called. I had many days when I would walk all day long to help me through anxiety. I would out walk my thoughts what I am saying is the first few miles the thoughts would come up to be witnessed as I continued to walk a beautiful PEACE would come over me.I became and still am addicted to what some call WALKERS HIGH. I think that people who don't like walking probably experience pain while they walk. I know that was the case with me. A friend of mine was always begging me to go for a walk in the woods with her and her dogs, and the few times I did I had pain in my lower back and shins. Then I lost 50 pounds, and now she doesn't have to ask me for a walk- I ask her. I still have weight to lose, but that initial loss took some weight off my back, literally, and I now have so much less pain. A walk boosts my mood- I get a chance to chat with my friend, and I get to forest bathe. It's been a truly excellent addition to my life.

Another reason is many are living in a location they do not like, and there is no place to walk. It's all ugly outside, and this city I live in is terrible. But i can't move. I'm 54, never married, failed career, no kids, no friends, no hope, stuck in a terrible city, hopeless. I want to "go" early....... I used to walk all the time when I was younger, but then made a poor choice in cities to move to , now I am stuck in a place I hate and do not want to gout into. I'll just fade away early in my hole..... I'll never find happiness :(
I'm 73, my dream is to travel abroad. Realized, that would require more walking/energy than I was could muster. Afraid, I was just too tired all-the-time to enjoy traveling and make new friends. Five weeks ago I gave up alcohol and started walking twice a day, using my free weights, balance board, resistance bands. Some results: fog lifted/mental clarity; I'm pretty again my eyes/face/skin look fab; first time in 10+ years good sleep; my legs look great. I'm now addicted to walking. Gotta go get my fix.🚶♀

I'm almost 70. 69 now I started walking 2 miles 40 minutes every day because I was depressed. I'm now going on 3rd month and it has become a habit and am going to increase from 2 to 3 miles looking for a new walking route to inspire me. I use an All trails ap on my phone and it tracks my progress and inspires me. I love watching the miles and hours stacking up.

I just started walking on the treadmill everyday for 30 minutes! Still going strong after 3 weeks!
That's only half of it dude. Get outside! Find a route that takes you through trees, forest, fresh air whatever. You'll notice the difference. Treadmill is for rainy/snowy/stormy days.

A month ago ,just started walking a couple blocks every morning very early . A 10-15 min walk.
Now I have a compulsion to do it every day.
I wake up , get dressed and go. Nothing to eat. No coffee. Just out the door.
While I walk, I pick up garbage off the street while going around the apt complexes in my neighborhood. I've also found some cool free things people leave out for others. I think this really helps my arthritis too.
I walk sins 30 years once a week for 20 to 24 km. And last seven years I began to walk barefoot 🦶 and this helps me very much to do my weekly activities. I work 12 or 13 hours a day. /without home activities cocking,cleaning…./. I absorb the energy from the nature. Everyone says to me: you are looking so fresh and this is true❤I always thank the God for creating the nature 🙏🏔

Started power walking during pandemic just to get a sense of freedom, but it turned out to be the happiest accident in all kinds of ways: 1. I lost weight 2. I built muscle tone 3. I felt a boost in energy level 4. I felt happy and motivated 5. My mind was cleared 6. I got a boost to my immunity 7. Felt more flexible too. And felt so much more refreshed overall! Also learned that your body will adapt to whatever you push it to as long as you do it gradually! I m now up to 25 miles per week🥳

Wow this has popped up just when I needed it. I have high blood pressure, depression, and a few other health issues. My Dr was telling me to get walking hard when you feel shitty physically and mentally but I have just started small steps and back gardening which I love.
I'm one of those people who doesn't like walking 🤣😂 that's because I prefer to run or swim. BUT I have been walking more in the beautiful woodland near where I live. Today I was feeling dark feelings of stress and disappointment so I decided to stick on this podcast and go for a walk! I fed and patted a horse, I stopped and found a new delicious blackberry patch and butterflies bumped into my head. I looked at the little caterpillars and spiders. I felt the childlike wonder again, a world full of possibilities again. Fresh air in my lungs. It was so wonderful to be free for those moments. I even felt like lying in the grass and watching a plane go by. Now I'm going to go and tackle some paperwork I have been avoiding knowing that I just did something beneficial for my mind and body 😊

I’ve walked pretty much every day all my life and will do till the day I transition, halfway I sit barefoot on the grass for 30 minutes and it’s a game changer for emotional well-being and grounding , trainers have taken out the earthing connection , add that to your daily walk and your sorted for life 💚

I rescued a blue heeler mix, and she just LOVES long walks. We walk at least 2 very long walks a day. I rescued her and now that's how she is rescuing me, by making me walk SO MUCH. That's awesome
What I learned walking average of 10km a day this past month:
1) It does reduce stress and make you sleep better. Lowering cortisol, lowers depression and things like this. You can walk and listen to podcasts, music , or just clear your head.
2) If you want to lose fat you have to keep a pretty fast pace, which can be hard without a good gait cycle or windlass mechanism, good posture, shoes etc. It won't make you as hungry as running and you can do more of it.
3) If you have flat feet, consider strengthening your arches, and learning not to heel strike to avoid stress on your knees and spine. Try barefoot shoes or walking barefoot but do the transitions slowly to avoid injury.
4) If you plan on going for really long walks but just starting out ease into it by increasing distance 10% each week. You can also split your walks into morning and evening.
5) Consider wicking socks or something that will absorb moisture to avoid blisters. Take care of your feet.
6) Do stretches and if you can get a good sports/back massage where they target pressure points. Again if you have flat feet and do too much your back will take a toll and you will need rest or relief. It prevents injury and helps you recover. Foam roller or massage gun is also good.
7) Remember to take rest days. Eat healthy, get a good electrolyte powder.
8) On rainy days you can still walk on a treadmill. It has the advantage that you can monitor your heartrate and you can adjust your incline.
9) Walking combines well with swimming, as well as strength training.

I never walk very fast at all. Perhaps 3 miles an hour max. However because I walk for 3 hours every day (3 x 1 hour walks) in 2021 I lost 3 clothes sizes In 6 weeks. Got down to the size I am now (uk size 6 to 8 and US size 2-4).
Mel this was the sign last push and confirmation I needed to get up off my ass and take a walk everyday. I deal with anxiety and depression diagnosed with postpartum depression almost three years after having my son as well being diagnosed with ADHD about three months ago. I took medication for depression and anxiety for a while (which helped) now I'm starting ADHD meds but I'm still not where I want or need to be. I was telling my husband tonight that I need to do something different with my self care, diet, quiet time and taking a walk, because when I put more emphasis on those things I feel better and show up better for myself and my family.

Haven't watched this video yet but, i will say since I have dogs and also know how beneficial it is to take said dogs for individual walks to get away from each other and to get away from the house. So I end up walking about three miles every day between all of the dogs. This has become my favorite part of the day. It is just so peaceful when I'm out on those walks and it's just me and my buddies and it's just such a great thing. One of the many ways that having dogs is greatly beneficial because without that I don't think I would go on those walks just for myself. Dogs seem to be the only thing I even give a s*** about anymore. They don't manipulate they don't lie they don't gaslight they don't do any of that nonsense they just want to love you and want you to love them back. I can definitely handle that.
I used to go on really long walks during the pandemic shutdown. Although I did it with headphones on listening to many, MANY different TED talks including yours! I was going thru the breakup of a decades long marriage when my ex left me suddenly with next to no explanation other than he was "unhappy" and had been for years. I was shocked, devastated and basically an emotional wreck! Those walks were definitely a great help to my mental state! I also started doing a lot of yard work and I found that doing physical activity outside really helped me emotionally. I still cried every day but all that physical activity not only raised my fitness level, it helped me process my many, MANY emotions! So I am not surprised by what this doc is saying. I know I'm not as active now and I will make a pack with myself to walk more and to9 do a bunch of short walks or short bursts of physical activity throughout the day!

I absolutely love walking and walk every single day ( luckily I have 2 dogs which means I'm out in all weathers all year long) in the UK we are having lots of rain in what's now supposed to be our summer time but walking in the rain, in the woods with the gentle patter of raindrops on leaves is beautiful and it makes me so happy and relaxed. I have heard how it helps prevent brain ageing as when we walk the brain is so fired up and tuned in ❤

I have a desk job. Once I am in a project and totally focusing on it, I lose all track of time. I have a Fitbit. It reminds me to get out of my chair once an hour to do at least 250 steps. This can take a minute or two. Those 2 minutes allow me to go back to my project with a clear mind and ready to focus once again. This is especially beneficial when I am struggling on a project or frustrated by it.
I started walking 20 years ago when my son had a mental health crisis and life was almost unbearable. For the first year my brain just buzzed during the whole walk - I could feel it processing stress. Now walking is an essential part of my life. I can't image life without it.

I am 74 years old and I am totally blind I wish I had someone that could take me for a walk daily but what I do currently I walk on one spot 10 km it takes me 2 hours three time is a week I don’t mind I feel wow I am happy in my younger days are used to run marathons as a blind person 2:16

I walk with my son and our dogs everyday. He’s 15 and it’s great bonding time, I know both of us will remember once he is grown and moved away. We’re lucky to live in beautiful woodland. There’s always a point on the walk where we stop and listen and absorb the nature around us. Yoga taught me how to feel present in the moment, not to rush through to the end and how to let go of that which doesn’t serve me. I apply the same mental approach to our walks. It felt like a chore before I did that.
Hard to think of myself at 65 as one of those older people…walk and work out everyday…weights, pilates, chair yoga. Im fitter faster and more engaged cognitively than I was in my 30s! Just as an adjunct…the cognitive benefits of walking in a fasted state…amazing!

as a person who is a work in progress from early childhood developmental issues, I absolutely dislike walking when I am in my negative state. when I am in a good space, walking isn’t an issue. I don’t use the same reasoning.
The trick for me is to USE walking and bilateral movements to help process and increase my body functions and Silence the Saboteur in me that wants me to stay unwell. ❤

I have cardiomyopathy...inherited.Its reduced the severity.... New it was going to catch up with me one day ..which was my motivation 25 yrs sgo. When my mum had a dudden cardiac death. Never gaining any weight is key..but walking literally saves my sanity and my complete wellbeing. Its free and wonderful for your body and mind. Guaranteed. Win win win....
Thank you so much for this episode! I am making a promise to myself today to start walking two miles each day. I have been voluntarily sedentary for over a year now, and let me tell you, it’s done me *no favors* - I’m in the worst physical health I have ever been. Partially due to myself working on my mental health and stress in my life in the last year and a half, my physical health took a backseat. I need to do better and show up for myself so that going forward at 35, I can live a longer, more fulfilling life for myself and my family. Walking massively helps with stress and mental health. Cortisol level decreases and all good chemicals go up. If you do it for at least an hour in one go (endorphins don't get released until we have walked for at least 30 mins so an hours walk you only create endorphins for 30 mins) you will feel amazing!

I walk my dog every day but unfortunately my cardiologist said that's "not really a walk"......I've added treadmill to my exercising but never really got over his statement. I love to walk and am slowly considering walking her (my dog) then going back out (before it gets winter again) and walk myself for as much time as I want!!!! without stopping to sniff etc. Yes, I love to walk and wish more people would do the same. I am in my best health when doing daily fast walks combined with runs in spurts with my headphones on. Up and down hills and running through woods. Heart rate up and down great for heart health ! I combine with healthy eating for the most part! I haven’t walked much in months as physical issues but will resume asap! I’m turning 65 in August and need to get it together ! Thanks so much for the uplifting podcast !

Me & Hubby walk 1hr every morning before work. Up & out at 5.30 whilst the kids sleep. Not always easy to do if tired BUT always feel better. My husband has crippling anxiety and at the moment depression due to grief, I have busy busy days so it helps mentally x

I have learned that when I walk it decreases my anxiety and and my depression.. if I go for a week without taking some kind of a walk depression sets in big-time even though I'm on medication so that little 30-minute walk helps to beat that.. matter of fact when this podcast started I started listening and decided and got inspired to go do a little 20-minute walk before going to get my friend from work that I get a ride everyday when I pick him up he was depressed so I told him I have a cure for that,will you trust me, just for 10 minutes? he said yes so we drove to the nearby park and walked around the park at first he was hesitant but I said it will make you feel better and then he actually opened up and talk to me about something that was bothering him and said he felt much better by the time I got him home so it did both of us a world of good just to take a little short walk together and talk❤❤❤❤❤

Never learning to drive and growing up skint's meant that I've always walked more than most people do lately, I'm thankful for both!
When my dogs transferred (4 months apart), I just couldn’t get out of just not feel like doing anything. I actually find that by my walking, it’s gotten me back on track. I now do about 10 miles 4 or 5 times each week along the beach. What keeps me going is getting a few books “listened to” each week as well. It’s easier on the body as well. I just do anything I can to understand this thing called life. ❤🐾❤️

Found Leslie Sansome videos here, and started her walking program, and after just three months I lost a total of twenty-one pounds, along with real simple cut backs like less sugar and processed foods. Walking cut my appetite and desire for fattening foods. Friends that are on ozempic don't even come close to my results, and have discontinued use and lost more pounds just by walking. Mother nature sure is amazing that's for sure, and it doesn't cost anything except time. Its been a year now, lost thirty-eight pounds and maintaining.

When I go to Palo Alto, Ca to the V.A. hospital for my husband, I will appreciate the large area to walking land, so it's adjustable. You talk about having an epiphany as a listener as we listen to this. I had mine yesterday. I don't know why. I walked for 4hrs in my kitchen/living room. Today I found "The GreenWay" a walking path that runs around my city. It's only 2.5 miles but is being developed. I found the peace of the countryside, watching squirrels, the rushing streams and a collection of butterflies. The forestation got me away from the American town. As an Englishman, where I lived in a pure countryside area, it made me feel like home .
I am grateful for the long days of summer to get outside early with our three dogs and use movement for medicine!

I'm an old person (72 years old) & live in Alaska. When its winter, I still sometimes walk outside, but it is more difficult. As an alternative activity, I stay inside and walk up and down my stairs.
My paternal grandmother said she is older than yesterday but younger than tomorrow. She prefers to say she is 96 years of age.
Old in years but not old in your desire to stay healthy.
Great podcast, I love walking, where I originally live we had to walk everywhere in hot humid weather. Now living in UK for tbe past 50 years I walk everyday atleast once a day or 2 to 3 shorter walks. I am blessed living in village, woodlands around, birds small animals see & hear has help me to a much healthier mental & physical health. 69yrs young but felt I am youthful and full of vitality. Sad when out walking I often don't see more than a handful or none peop,e of all ages. Walking in fesh air, sunshine & amazing woodland and it cost nothing but improves your mind, body & soul. Come on people get walking.

Love this conversation! I walk twice a day for stress reduction and many health reasons. The time out in nature is very calming and creates an environment of gratitude. A free pedometer app tracks your daily steps. You can set your daily goal and it will track and show you how many steps and how many days you met your goal. Walking not only becomes a habit, but a competition with yourself to continue to meet or exceed your goal. You just have to keep your phone on you! I love my running belts that hold my phone as I move all day.

It's amazing to learn of the benefits of walking. I walk 6000 steps appx everyday ,in the morning. A coiple of rounds in the big park. We are blessed with a 10-acres Wonders's Park in New Bombay,Nerul,just infront of our house, A well designed Theme Park ,it offers morning walkers special permission in the morning ,for less than ten dollars an year. I take snaps , write poems or listen to hymns or even chat with friends, as I walk. Thank you for the podcast ,Mel Robbins, God bless you, Jose Abraham.
Walking has always brought me peace and has helped me in difficult moments in my life, years ago with my father's illness and now for me, facing chemotherapy far from my home and family.
I just listened to this podcast while I was walking, giving a scientific explanation to the benefits that I already felt when walking outdoors... and after listening to it I had to increase my daily steps as advised by the expert.

Walk, stroll, amble, saunter, hike, promenade. Really good point that settlements need to be designed to make it easy to go for a walk. Eg having a corner shop nearby, wide pavements and safe nice parks nearby.
Great stuff! Walking every day, just moving this way is so good for you. Look at the Blue Zones, this is one of the keys to longevity. Kiki and I walk most every day we can. If it’s real cold on our mountain, we will do the parking garage.
My grandparents immigrated from England in 1918. They were great walkers. My mom walked with her dad to the local library weekly, a five mile loop. My grandad walked daily, my mom and her sisters walked daily, and my mothers 4 daughters are all walkers. Some of my fondest times spent with my mom were while out on a walk with her. My own kids and I walked everyehere. We lived in a small walkable town in Washington State. Bald eagles circled overhead, the tall conifers had wonderful hiking trails, deer leapt across the girest paths, and berries grew abundantly in late summer. They are now all grown, but they carry on the walking tradition. I am 74 and proudly wear the title of the quirky lady who walks everyday, rain, wind, and sun. I carry a UV umbrella now, but care little what others think. At least 3 miles a day. My blood pressure, my cholerserol levels, my pulse, my glucose levels all healthy. Depression is rare. Exercise diffuses stress. I talk to God, I love being out under the sky, cloud gazing, puppy petting, encounters with others out and about, and always return home happy. It is my daily ritual, a simple great pleasure. I also think deeply about things, and compose poems in my mind...walking just unwinds me in all sorts of wonderful ways. I enjoyed your feed back. Mostly Its just become a part of my daily life. My mom continued her walks until a bad fall broke her hip at age 90. She rapidly declined after that, and passed away at 93. Thank you Mom, for teaching me the simple pleasure of going for a walk.

I do morning walking daily with my husband for about 1.30 hours, 7 Km, and more than 10,000 steps. We really love it! ❤️ Thanks for sharing the benefits of walking. It even makes us love and motivated to make it as our daily habit.

Walking 2 miles in the morning outside (and this is in Chicago suburbs even in winter) a day isn’t much Mel. Kick yourself out the door in the morning and it’s done in 30/40 minutes if it’s a pleasant walk thru your neighborhood.😊 or split it in an am/pm break thru the day. I know from sometimes having to skip my morning habit. It TRULY makes a difference. If I don’t do my am walk, my ENERGY flags by 3/4pm….I totally agree with this..🎉🎉🎉 NOW you need to interview Dr. Peter Attia and share this insightful information. He does give credence to walking but I think he underestimates the benefit to your emotions. Totally agree, depending on your day, it makes sense that you can vary the type of your walk (fast or slower, creative or problem solver or just a soak in your surroundings or for discovery of something you hadn’t previously noticed?). And I bought his book while listening to this. ❤
Totally agree! I feel like walking is the first easy step a person can do to break out of a funk! It helps to release so much pent up anxiety and it helps you sleep better. The fresh air and exercise feels great! The time to yourself and the way you feel your muscles tighten and feel stronger and for people that desperately need SOMETHING to feel proud of themselves for, walking is one of the best things to do. It seems like you always walk further than you intended and you come back feeling amazing and think "Whoa! I walked a mile? It didn't feel like it!"
I am 77 and walk 3.5 km every morning with my dog up in the woods, and I love my walks! Everything I see, hear and people I meet are lovely!
It's 100F in Texas now, plus the index is 5 degrees more or less. I move/walk indoors daily also some light strength exercises for my 74th summer to help my muscles & bones. I do this throughout the day & night. Never been depressed.I also have hobby I 😉 enjoy. Thanks😊
Thank you for this! I’ve always intuitively known that walking is not only good for health but actually essential. I didn’t own a car until I was 27 so I walked and/or used public transit all he time. In midlife I enjoyed hiking with friends. But those friends gave up walking and I didn’t feel safe in the woods alone. Then I experienced sudden catastrophic vision loss in my early 50s and had to give up driving. I lived in a suburb with a walking/bike path, a small park with a lake, near public transit and within walking distance of shops, banks, restaurants and a library. So I went back to the lifestyle I had when I was young. I’m 72 now. My husband and I moved to a suburb with similar amenities. He too has had to give up driving due to vision loss. He is ten years older than I and severely arthritic, but I’ve convinced him to walk with me. He is much slower than I but it’s a bonding experience for us. We walk 1/2 mile to a grocery store. He takes a break while I shop. Then we walk home again. I think this is the best he can do. I can easily walk three miles in about an hour depending on weather. But I have no one to walk with. All but one of my age peers are semi-invalids, obese and sedentary. My one friend who likes to walk lives in another city and is not inclined to drive to my neighborhood to walk with me. You’ve given me the idea to recruit walking partners on a local social media platform called Nextdoor. I don’t mind walking on my own but I do get lonely.
I love walking outdoors. I really being serious since June. I try to walk 3 miles ; goal is 5miles. Mentally I feel so much better when I walk outside. I just always under estimate how good walking is for our health.
