    I made a floating deck myself a few years ago. It always feels better when you do something yourself and not pay someone, unless you fuck it up lol!

      It was very satisfying to do this project. Before this the only thing I put together was a dresser from wayfair🤣

    Thank you for your honest comments. You’re a real and authentic DIY-er. We (DIY-ers) are not contractors, but homeowners who want to improve their homes by doing a job which is not their profession, but we have the guts and confidence to take the challenge. So, it is obvious that we don’t know everything. I watched many DIY-ers who pretend to talk like pros and make the job seem very complicated - this does not encourage a DIY-er. It is refreshing to watch your videos - Thank you.

      Sorry for the late reply (1 year!). I appreciate your kind words. I am a diy er and intend to always speak this way. I feel it is ridiculous to speak like you know what you are doing when you don't! To show the mistakes and speak from the heart and be honest is the only way!

    Exactly the point, no need to over build, over spend. Only thing I see the wood looks beatup after a yr, maybe paint or stain will be helpful for appearances

    Great video Clint! The only thing I would say is at the 6:00 mark you mentioned using nails. I would highly advise against nails and stay with the screws. The problem with nails is the freezing and thawing that we get eventually pushes the nail heads out. When I moved into my house, and refinished my deck; my wife and I pulled out all of the nails that were sticking up and replaced them with screws. It was a very tedious process, but the screws shouldn’t ever pop out since they tightly grab into the wood. Just a tip 👍🏼

  • @piratetaylor29

    Your deck is under a roof so it doesn't matter which way you lay the boards. Without a roof, I suppose the parallel to the house is better so when the 1 or 2 boards rot along the roof drip line, they are easier to replace. Other than that, it's your call. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸

I just wanted to show anyone who wanted to build a deck that if I (who has not even put a Lego together) can do it, they can do this too. What were the smaller cut pieces of wood attached vertically to the joists? I thought if you had the deck blocks you wouldn’t need any other wood for support.

    I watched the first video of the deck build. You can get away with much with an on-grade deck .. just don't build elevated. I can't decide between impressed or amused .. probly a bit of both. Nice deck .. hope it lasts.

      Thanks Terry. This video was to basically show if I can do it (grass guy that has no carpentry skills) can build a basic cheap deck, anyone can. Don't be scared to try it. That was my thought behind it. I will be getting a professionally built deck hopefully next season.

    You did a good job-regardless of not having done one before. I built a floating deck last summer with my niece’s husband (who is a builder) and we did it very similar.
    Something I found out during my build, most deck builders don’t leave a small gap between the boards anymore. They do just like you did; anchor the first one, then put them all down loose against each other and use a board at the end to tighten them up and take out the gap. They use the wood shrinking over time as the gap.
    Good luck on the lawn season. I gave you a subscription because being from MI-we gotta stick together! West side of the state here in Byron Center (10-minutes south of Grand Rapids).

    • @TheNeighborDominator
      @TheNeighborDominator  3 месяца назад +1

      They were all the same size pieces of wood. I was going for simplicity with this build. I have no carpenter skills so I was going the easiest route possible. I didn't want to have to cut anything but luckily my friend brought his circular saw so we could make a few extra supports and a step. Hope this helps

    Your deck would have looked much better if you had used an oil based stain instead of it turning grey. But you can still stain it after a power wash and removing all that dead wood, mildew etc. also, your deck is strong because it’s in the shade. So it will last longer.
