Best Mono Fishing Line Experiment: Abrasion Test Across 4 Popular Lines

- Опубликовано: 30 июл 2024
- This video shows the best mono fishing line in terms of its ability to withstand abrasion.
This is a very important factor for those of us who target fish with rough mouths as well as those of us who often fish in areas with a lot of underwater structure (docks, rocks, oyster bars, thick vegetation, etc.).
We recently built this testing assembly, and it has been able to help us determine which lines truly are the best for abrasion resistance.
In this video, we are testing the following 4 popular lines:
- Berkely Trilene Big Game
- Stren Original
- Ande
- Berkely Trilene XL
I had assumed that the one with the thickest diameter would be the winner, but that was not the case.
Watch the video above for the details in this test.

One might just might say this is
mono e mono
oooouch, you made my brain bleed and my eyes go blind reading that...it's just not pun-n-games man!
HaHaHa
I can really appreciate your impartiality. Please keep these videos coming.
Awesome experiment. Way to go Stren!
I love these test definitely some eye openers! Great job Luke.
Thanks Rob!
Awesome experiment. Good ol' Stren coming through big time.
Thank you. I have stern line monflilamenet on my reel right now.
I would like to see trilene XL vs XT in a abrasion test!
test copolymer against mono
Where the test is very close, virtually a draw, then it should be the thinner diameter line that should take the win.
I have always loved stren for the strength but for bass I love Berkeley. Both are great for the money. Berkeley will give you a extra feel of what the fish is doing. Stren can be tricky it will back lash when it is new but hardly ever have to change it. With the Sten was able to get my Hook out of rocks and other snags.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I still use traditional Berkley or Stren mono (I'm too old to change) works well for me. When fishing line breaks it's rarely the fault of the line. (Unless it's old)
Fishing line like everything else becomes a religion...everyone has a brand and a good story to go a long with it. Sometimes listening to seasoned experienced so called experts only adds to the confusion.
Even with my poor vision, I can easily see all kinds of line in the water..I'm sure the fish can see the leader as well. (I wonder if they even care)
please test the kastking mono leader vs Stren or berkeley, thanks!
Wow cool test
I've always use monofilament as a leader but I switch over to fluorocarbon in finesse situations. I'm definitely curious to see how the visibility test goes.
Me too:)
I agree. This year with Spanish mackerel I tried fluorocarbon but got no more fish than mono. Leader length was more important.
This is what I do using main line mono for a leader / using the very finest grit emery paper , some also call it crocus cloth and run a piece of line thru it holding the crocus cloth folded between your index finger and thumb just enough to remove the shine .. I believe it makes the line almost invisible and you have the durability of mono
I would like to see a comparison of the Stren vs Yozuri hybrid also.
Could you guys do a test on inshore baitcaster reels? I'd like to know more about the Lew's Inshore Custom, Curado K, Daiwa Costal. etc
Out of all these tests I have seen conducted, the most important factor seems to be the ability of the line to stretch as being the most important factor. Since that is the one characteristic that the mainline mono exhibits over all the others.(That along with it's increased diameter) I originally thought that the density/stiffness of fluoro would give it an edge, but this particular test disproved that. I guess that extra amount of pliability goes a long way in retaining integrity under load. Along with being slightly thicker.
I agree that the stretch may very well be a big factor. I used to think that the added diameter of mono relative to braid was a factor too, but that got disproven in another test (www.saltstrong.com/fishing-tip/fluorocarbon-leader-abrasion-test-vs-mono/) in which a 20 lb mono beat a 25 lb fluoro that had a thicker diameter than the 20 lb mono.
So now, I believe that the difference is due to either the added density of the fluoro making it more brittle than the mono, or the strength of the mono somehow enabling it to withstand more abrasion... or perhaps a combination of the two.
I need to know is stren the best monofilament fishing line to buy
Great vids, I would like to see Maxima tested. Ultra green, Fluorocarbon, and Power Pro Maxcuatro. Thank you.
If possible, I would like to see Bullbuster line and leader reviews. Not sure if youve done them or not, but Im curious. Thanks!
I like all your test. Thanks for all the info. Can you test Copolymer line against Mono & Flouro?
Thanks for the suggestion David! Is there any copolymer in particular that you like best or that's most popular that I should keep an eye out for?
Salt Strong I have only tried P-Line & Vicious brands. Not sure the exact lines.
ive used both stren and trilene lines. Honestly the difference is slim to none, I think this test provided proof of this. Stren is probably a little better, however, trilene is usually cheaper, especially the big game spools.
Please do Stren Original vs Sufix Superior
Yea the trilene big game is a screaming deal. It may not be as sensitive, but it’s way more cost effective for large baitcasters and conventional reels
Good experiment but I hope people assess their fishing environment and choose based on where and how they’re fishing! Sometimes abrasion resistance is last in terms of variables to consider and sometimes it’s first. I’ll be fishing off a pier in a couple weeks so I put 50 yards of 50lb big game on my Avet MXL over 30lb braid. In open water I use 100+ yards of 30lb fluorocarbon so the situation really makes my decisions! Also depends on how long your leader is, if it’s 3’ compared to a topshot then it’s a different game! Bottom line, assess your situation and conditions and choose based on that!
Can you compare Kastking to Ande....and did you do a visibility test?
Bro, which fishing knot is best for mono line to hook? And( specially for big catfish like wallagu attu),thank you...
What happen with the suffix line you had in the begging of the video?
spoon lure casting best leader line tell me??
Great test! Are you checking diameter each lines?
Stren is the only mono I will buy!
Stren is a joke
I have always liked stren line
Which one has the least amount of stretch and strength?
I use Stren on all my reels I have had good success with it over the years back in my early days of fishing I used Berkley Trilene XL for a short time on some of my reels and I lost a lot of my favorite lures from line snap
I Use Stren magnathin as a leader on my yellow fireline.
My grandfather always told me to stick with Ande. I may have to reconsider.
I have been a big fan of Ande for many years too.
Who cares about abbrasion resistance I care about diameter to lb test and the color mostly because if the diameter is equal the line that is stronger for it's diameter with be better for visability, abbrasion resistance ect.
Because nothing else matters when the 50 flathead rubs the line till it breaks. Another story to tell with no pictures.
I'm an old guy who's fished for over 60 years and I've been using Stren for most of those years with great success. Many of my fishing buddies has used other brands including fluorocarbon but I've stuck with original stren mostly. I always believed that a company as big and well known as Dupont should produce a superior product and in my solely opinion I believe they do. Thank you for your testing.
Berkley bought Stren in 2004. Since then they are made by the same company, Pure Fishing.
Great test! I've switched back to nylon/mono leader for most situations except when the water is super clear. Thank you for this video. BTW, your other line tests (braid/fluoro/nylon are excellent. THANK YOU! Those pros that endorse products give opinions but never objective tests.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment! More fishing experiments coming soon.
I fished 15 & 20lb. Up to 100lb Big Game for 10 years on the west coast worked good for me. Never did care for that stretchy lavender stuff. After I was introduced to Trilene low vis green it's been my go to of choice since 83. A friend gave me a spool full of 4lb Maxima for crappies but lb/lb for the cost...I caught just as many fish as he did and just as big on the crappies and toothy walleyes. Now northerns will chew through most anything up to 10lb test. In Minnesota most guys I knew fished 6 or 8 maybe 10 for trolling only because of that 10lb trolling. Never know what you'll hook.
Big Game will always break much higher than rated in test that if have seen. But your test are great for abrasions. And surprising.
That was interesting thanks man!
Thanks making time to leave the nice comment Chris!
Did you ever do the mono vs fluorocarbon vis test?
Thank you for doing this experiment. I've been wondering for a while if I should keep buying leader grade mono or just regular mono.
What's your thoughts about using steel leader with artificial lures? I recently got bitten off by a bluefish on my 20lb mono leader and I'm wondering if the smaller diameter steel leader would be better than heavier mono.
I personally prefer using mono and rarely use wire. But if you're specifically targeting bluefish or other fish that have very sharp teeth, then a wire leader may be smart to use.
Increase the test of your mono. I use regular mono for my leader and will go as high as 40-50lbs if there's blues in the area or if I'm fishing from or around the rocks. I would go higher but it gets very difficult to tie. Big game.
Luke, I love the all the line test videos. Have you thought about creating a summary of all your tests? Maybe for insiders only?
Can you test yozuri hybrid and kastking copolymer..... kastking has a mono leader I used and it worked fine but still looking for a second option..... I don't use floro anymore
Robert Jeffries kastking is horrible. I used 30lbs test and it snapped twice on hooks ups of rockfish. I’ll never buy it again.
If you notice, all four brands broke between the 22-24 movement marks, thus they’re nearly equally abrasion resistant.
So what's the best confinement line cause I want to buy one
You should have tested Trilene XT as well as XL.
We'll add it to our future tests!
The biggest issue I have with mono is the stretch. My question is; which casts the best but also has the least stretch with at least decent knot strength, and then abrasion tolerance. How do you rank them in importance?
Zebco Cajun line has very little stretch. I liked the gator Green.
I have yet to find a line I like more than the XL smooth casting. It has low diameter and it casts easily while retaining a reputable amount of strength and abrasion resistance.
Thanks for the input
50 now been using stren since my dad handed me my first fishing pole when I was able to hold one.
Are you using heavier weight compared to your fluorocarbon vs. mono test?
I have used the same weights for all of these tests. Some of the original contests used just 1 weight per side. And the latest ones (including this one) had 2 weights per side (they can be identified in the videos when the weights are shown).
We’ve all been fooled!! 😕
A finer sand paper would be a better test, where you had to rub the line far more times. The time between breaks would be longer and give a better indication of relative abrasion resistance.
This is relevant to dragging slow through sand, but far more often line is compromised by getting nicked on rocks and structure which this does a poor job of modeling. Line pulled laterally over a sharp surface under tension would simulate a fish dragging line across a rock or piling and be far more useful an indicator of line quality (due to being the scenario encountered far more frequently). I can't remember ever abrading a line to breaking, but I constantly trim line that has been nicked.
How about Sufix?
I like the High Seas fluorocarbon coated copolymer.
I just tried this.....noyhing but memory....i may go back to stren
Try coated braid vs normal braid and vs mono
Here's an experiment of braid vs. mono in case you haven't seen it: www.saltstrong.com/articles/braid-vs-mono-abrasion-strength-experiment/
I now know that I've been using the best fishing line available.
In your Mono vs Fluor test you were getting 40 oscillations from Andes and here was 22. What was the weight difference in both test and was it the same grit paper in both test? I’m just trying to understand the discrepancy’s.
I increased the weights for some tests (but all tests had two equal weights to keep it each experiment fair).
Salt Strong just adding(what is that 2lbs) cut the Andes abrasion resistance in half? 40 to 22-ish. I understand more weight is gonna make it fail sooner but that little amount of weight made a drastic amount of change? Love to see more experiment (same line different weights) simulate smaller to bigger fish. I just might do some experiments myself, I’m extremely curious now.
@@salty7760 Yes, I believe that the difference in the two tests that you references was that the weight went from 1 lb to 2 lbs... so as the weight doubled, the revolutions before breaking dropped in half.
Another important test is comparing measured line diameter. Some companies like Maxima make thicker line than they advertise as a marketing stunt.
I have tried so many lines....stren orig.and magna thin are best...stren products period.
The stren is more supple than the big game and that’s a win for lure action so Stren for the win
I use stren and trilene they are the originals they're better than suffix, p-line and any of those other lines out there don't waste your money on them
Thanks for the feedback and for watching!
I like Berkeley because of it casting range.
Does anyone ever use grand slam?
try adding maxima ultra green to the mix
That stuff is so thick it'll probably beat them all
There is some good mono line that will catch huge bass like maxima mono bass guide told me use
Thanks for leaving the comment!
Have you ever done this test with the important variable of water added?
Yes, I have repeated some of these tests with lines that I soaked in water for 1 hour or more, and they all resulted in the same winner as the dry test.
@@Saltstrong Thank you for the response
Rs brother
Please test again underwater condition.I think this condition effects test result.
Stren has been my choice of mono line since I was a child. I'm now 40
It's obvious test size would be a factor.
DAIWA use to make a brand called SAMURAI GREEN.I used only 6lb test and it was so strrong Iuse to straighten hooks on lures that were snagged and get lures back consistantly! Why they ever stopped making this is beyond me!
I remember that line they also made crystal clear it was great as well
Sorry, sample size too small to give significant results.
Um, why test the Trilene XL against Ande leader material? The XL is a mainline you would fill your spool with, the Ande is only 50yrds long for leaders. Or does this Ande come in a spool long enough to spool a reel with as a mainline? Seems like an odd comparison otherwise. Shouldn't the Ande be tested against other leader material, not a mainline?
So far, I have not seen any difference in "leader" line vs. bulk spool line from an individual manufacture unless the line is a different size... the leader spools seem to be more about convenience of carrying a spool where the line won't get all over the place like it would in a bulk spool. One example of this is the fact that the other two bulk spools (seemed to do a bit better than the Ande leader spool).
Overall, I can care less how they market the lines... I just want the best line without wasting money.
@@Saltstrong Okidoki, but if the material Ande use for this leader isn't available as a mainline, what's the point testing it against three mainline spools? seems an odd comparison. An Ande mainline product should have been used. One a different note, what do you think of Izorline? it used to be the bee's knees 20 odd years ago. I wonder what their products are like now in comparison. Regarding leaders, I don't think you can go past Yozuri H.D. Carbon. As you know there's stiff & soft fluorocarbon. Theirs is a soft type (so nicer bait presentation) but seems to have the same abrasion resistance as stiffer fluoro. It has awesome knot strength (especially with an Alberto knot), doesn't get damaged and wrinkly if a quickly tied, not enough lubed, knot slips a bit. Also it's light pink in colour (which is best colour for invisibility at most depths & fluoro is already the same refractive index as water. So a ligth pink fluoro is as ideal as you can get). I have tried so many different Fluorocarbon leaders & it really is my fave. So if you haven't tried it, which I imagine you have, do give it a go. Cheers & Kia ora from NZ (the Angler's Eldorado, according to Zane Grey)...
@@Tight--LiNeZ Make sure to watch this experiment which shows how the Yozuri fluoro compares to the Ande mono (this is when I realized that the marketing claims of many line companies are not to be trusted): ruclips.net/video/KiQTvmM-1cY/видео.html
@@Saltstrong Wow. But surely with a weigh on it like that, stretch comes into it. The mono can stretch whereas the fluoro doesn't as much, meaning each stroke of the sandpaper has more of a scratching affect on the fluoro in a shorter area of space on the line, or something. Wonder how visible the mono is underwater? I must admit, my spool of Ande leader from 25 years ago, is still mega strong & never breaks, it's just so thick for it's breaking strain though. Maybe newer Ande stuff is thinner?
@@Tight--LiNeZ If stretch did impact this test, the same impact will happen in real life too given that the line are tight when fighting a fish... if anything, the tension will be much more making the mono even stronger relative to fluoro. As for wondering how visible mono is underwater, I'll refer you to another experiment in which I was testing the sink rates of mono vs. fluoro lines in water. A surprise finding was how similar the lines looked underwater (essentially showing that the "invisible" claims of fluoro are simply not true). ruclips.net/video/d9GM78rkqnU/видео.html
Berkeley flourocarbon infused coploymer
Actually Berkeley owns stren
Nvm, it was stren
Yea that’s handy but stress line diameter is crap
I went and bought 10lb 1500yds, 12lb 1100yrds, 15lb 900yrd trilene big game mono after watching this video.
Matching diamiter to diamiter is the only fair test. What the spool test is labeled means nothing
In your "mono vs fluoro" vid ruclips.net/video/KiQTvmM-1cY/видео.htmlm26s it looks like that same Ande 20lb monofilament broke after 40 passes, but in this video it broke after 23 passes. Is there a difference between the test you ran in the original video and in this one besides the line/surface being wet?
Even if so, that's still an enormous drop-off in strength when wet!
Stren for the WIN.
No spider wire??? Seriously
Yikes, lol. Thanks.
ande still the best all around has been for year's
No MAXIMA . they been around for ever!!!! or is it American lines only test your doing????
The lines we used were the most requested from comments in earlier line tests that we performed.
It’s captain sobel
Pandeep Pawar lol from Band of Brothers??
Unfortunately 5 years old, should have them all the same diameter. Hanging a weight is relevant, the diameter more relevant.
Thanks for the feedback!
. @Saltstrong Thanks for replying on such an old post. Find your videos very well thought out. We love an industry full of wives tails, black magic and voodoo :)Too bad I'm in Ohio, but love inshore when i get a chance. Going after Bull Reds this Nov! Keep up the great work and All the best
Trilene big game is nothing but a sales gimmick. The plain old original Stren blows it away.
I just got, 14,000 yards of trilene for $10
How good is that trilene line
Maxima kicks all it's ass.
Because it's thick af
Not a relevant test. Same diameter line is more important to test oneley so you can find out how abrasion resistant the line is. Then you get true results. Test those lines in same diameter 0,30 ore 0,35 all 4. Oneley in this case you get " real " results. BS is not important in abrasion resistance diameter is!!
The assumption for this test is that anglers mostly choose their line based on the strength they need to handle the pulling power of their target fish. If you equate the diameter of a braid to the diameter of a mono line, it would then be comparing a 100 lb braid to a 20 lb mono. Do you think many people would be considering picking between a 100 lb braid and a 20 lb mono for handling any given species?
Yep but you were not talking about compare braid with mono. In your Video you compared 4 diffetent monos. And the theme was abrasion resistance and not pulling power. And a nother argument Look at the i think berkley nanofil line massive BS in extrem thin diameters but almost no abrasion resistance. So wud you compare abrasion of a nanofil in 0,10 with a mono in 0,30 ore a braid in 0,16 if they have all 3 5 pound BS.I can tell you the looser right now withouth any tests and who will winn im also 75% shure. So if you want a fair abrasion resistance test you must look on the diameter not the bs. Bs dont say nothing about abrasion resistance. And also if you have a 0,55 mono ore fluorocarbon they beat the 0,55 braid in abrasion resistance and the braid can be 6 times stronger as they are. And also a 0,35 mono with 7 pounds is much more abrasionresistant as a 0,16 braid with 7 pounds. So if you targeting fish under critical conditions i wud prefer mono ore fluorocarbon over braid ( pulling power means nothing when the fish finds 1 stone 1 sharp edge and braid is history with other 2 lines you have more chances to get the fish with equal ore a litle lower pulling power of the lines because they are thicker. If you have clear areas then pulling power is important but Else not. )
@@evgenveberic7023 My apologies... we have a braid vs. mono video that typically gets this line diameter question, and I assumed you were commenting on that one... my mistake! I agree that it would be smart to do the mono vs. mono test while equalizing the line diameters for the reasons that you mentioned. The reason it was focused on breaking strength was simply to keep it consistent with the braid vs. mono one that gets the most traffic.
Obviously after watching this you don't need to worry about abbrasion resistance when buying mono just get higher lb test if you need it.
Too bad Stren only goes to 30lb test max
Too many knots for old eyes and fingers. Straight mono for me, no leaders.
Kastking the best fishing line
No beard!!
This test proves nothing
I put trilene big game on old ande spools. Just because I like the spools when Im fishing. Easier to pack.
