Mercedes-AMG E63 vs Audi RS6 vs Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid | Super-estate shootout! | Autocar

- All the car you'll ever need. Is that a thing? It feels like, with these three cars, it could be. We've got three super estates together, cars that are meant to do everything from entertain you to transporting a family and a brace of golden retrievers, to see which is the car to rule them all.
One is the all-new Audi RS6 Avant TFSI Quattro. Like the others, we'll drop its full specification below but also like the others, it's a 4.0-litre, four-wheel drive car with a V8.
The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate 4Matic+ brings with it a more rear-biased four-wheel drive setup and a little more power than the Audi but there's not much between them on straight-line speed, power, price, or economy.
The slight outlier is the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, largely because of the 'E-Hybrid' bit. While it still has a 4.0 V8 - goody - it also has plug-in hybrid assistance, which means you might do your weekly commute without using any fuel at all. The system adds weight and price, but also power. It has lots more than the competitors.
Which, though, is finest super estate on earth? Join Matt Prior and James Disdale as they sit in a car together and talk it out. At some length.

Love these AMG/RS/Porsche reviews every decade basically lol, BMW need to do a shooting brake too
Alpina B5 touring has 620 hp.
M3 Touring might come too. Although not a direct competitor it might even be better
These are wagons, not shooting brakes
@@ThatRosco458 What´s the difference? I thought "wagon" is just an american term?
@@ThatRosco458 E63 t-modell and RS6 are too. There is barely a difference anymore.
There is a Porsche Panamera Turbo S Sports Turismo with 630 bhp. This is the more driver focused car as there is no heavy hybrid electric tech. Lighter and quicker too.
It’s also closer price wise
Turbo S is the real car to have... The hybrid crap is bought only for tax reasons because the end cost is less than Turbo S
@@mario20033 wait till you find out there’s a hybrid turbo s coming 😟
@@JadedsoFaded there already is a new (facelifted) hybrid Turbo S out at least in EU (680hp -> 700hp), but it's using detuned engine compared to the non-hybrid and is only bought due to tax reasons.
@@mario20033 Exactly! Nobody is buying those hybrids for any other reason than tax subsidies.
I enjoyed watching the Video Comparison. The Mercedes Is the one I would choose
The E63 S any day!
Great review. I enjoy random videos like this where Matt and James are so chill and just blabber on about the cars. 26 minutes well spent!
This was an incredibly boring video. They just drive along at slow speeds, never testing the performance, while having a ridiculously mundane conversation
@@peterjordansonthe2nd731thank you.
So boring, speed so slow as if they were afraid, no excitement in their voices.
26 mins of boredom
It does not happen often but I have long thought the best YT car review format is two people in a car having a conversation about it.
The smoking tire have been doing reviews with both Matt and Zach and they’ve been great.
They made it boring. It was unexciting and they just wafted about on the road with the occasional b rolls.
It was uninteresting.
Money no object, the Merc growl does it for me!
The E63 amg has all the full package. The best interior, exterior, dynamics, safety, sound and reliability !!!!!
Lovely and informative. I'm taking the Panamera every time
Alpina B5 Touring should be somewhere in this comparison, but if I had to pick between these 3, I would go for the E63 S.
Take a Panny Turbo w/o the Hybrid system....will be super collectible IMO
Agree! Non hybrid is the one to go for but I’m a MB fanboy and drive an E63 wagon now, so I’m bias.
All of these cars are such amazing daily drivers. The E63s wagon would be my choice
Buy some glasses, i bet something is wrong with your eyes. lol
@@theoldfashioned_ lol what is your problem mate?
@@theoldfashioned_ You Bing-Bonged him
I'm an Audi owner right now, out of these ones if I had the choice I'd go the Benz
Given the choice of the three, I think I’d have a Alpina B5 Touring! 😎
Zzzzz
@@sugarsaint I agree, why do people even say nonsensical crap like that?
Had a choice between and RS4 and an Alpina... Went with the latter and have never looked back
Why are many reviewers not getting the Panamera Turbo S without the hybrid?
My thinking is that because of the way the world is going, the hybrid may be the one to have for many people. Could also be slightly cheaper to run because of it weirdly.
@@Car10121-s exactly and in some markets the taxes and emissions fees might make it a cheaper than the Turbo anyway.
@@RichardFermion but not in the UK where Autocar is based.
Oh and it's massively lighter too
@@th3b0untyhunter oh for sure. I'm in NA and that's not the case here but I think/assume most markets are emissions heavy.
I think Porsche will only lend them the hybrid so they can push their hybrid sales to bring their group C02 down.
Well, I suppose the MB is my personal favourite, too. I like the colour best!
Cheers, J.
Guys, in the Mercedes you can get the right side of the dash screen to show, in the middle, which gear you are in. It's pretty big and easy to see
All of these weigh so much. I would go E63 S Estate personally for its fun oversteer handling. Its fun to drive unlike the other two Audi products. Shame Euro regulations are killing petrols by strangling them of sound and character
Agreed, Audi's look amazing but driving them feels lackluster compared to the competition. And If I wanted the Porsche experience, I'd get a 718, 911 or Taycan.
It appears the reviewers are not entirely convinced by any of these 3. Understandable.
You two are Doing god’s work. I don’t know how you pick between 3 ultimate do it all cars. I’d have the RS6 not because of the dynamics but because of the cool factor.
The Mercedes’ doesn’t look different enough from the non AMG Wagon variant. But the Audi with those flared fenders just does it for me. The Panamera is in a disappearing lineup that’s soon to be replaced by its Tycan cousin.
One is 40% more expensive than the others, how can this be a minor point?
Which one exactly?
@@robin4046 the panamera is 140k, the rest are 100k
Should have used the Panamera 4S instead.
They should use the Turbo S (petrol rather than hybrid) in these comparisons.
I’m pretty sure they would’ve gone for the turbo s if they could. I’m guessing Porsche UK don’t have one in their press fleet…
Hitting that pothole should be a part of all future testing.
Misha exposed the Porsche Hybrid as useless on the track. The battery system makes it far too heavy and the car struggled with high tyre temperature after just one lap of the Nurburgring. The E63 is the best all rounder.
I’d be keen for the smaller version of this. Rs4 vs c63 etc and also the slightly more economical version - e53 vs s6 vs Panamera 4s maybe
s6 vs e53 would not be fair. e53 does 0-60 in 4.5 sec. s6 does it in 5 sec. 349 hp diesel vs 435 hp petrol
@@sapnupuas7271 why isn't it fair? it's the one rung down from the top performance model. You could pick e43 I guess but that has a naff sounding engine.
Wish you guys also got the Alpina B5 Touring, nevertheless great video
not an inside house tuner
@@Leonchik999. not a criteria. Still has VIN and warranty
@@papa_pt totally agree, that's why you won't see here G-power, Brabus, Hamann, Ac Schnitzer, Carlsson, Dinan and so on. They do tune those beautiful cars but at same time are independent, while M division and Amg belong to the brand. But same as you I would like to see that Alpina on the track 👍👍👍
You need to use a Panamera Turbo S (non hybrid) for the comparison at some stage.
Great video, I love all three cars but if I had a choice I would take the E 63 s
Thanks God I will buy one for myself
funny I was watching old Auto Express featuring James and here you are lol
glad to see you back....missed your reviews and your driving skills on track lol
A very interesting estate car comparison the Audi RS 6 Mercedes AMG E63 S Porsche Panama Turbo S E Hybrid Sport Turismo. All 3 of them excel in different areas. I would say as the best all rounder is the Mercedes AMG E63 S. Though it will come down to personal preference. All 3 contenders are on top of their game.
This channel features some of the best cars BUT its reviewers/journalists let it down. It'd be rude to say they're boring but one could easily fall asleep watching them. Anyways, if it was up to me I'd have the RS6 fitted with the E63S engine & exhaust plus with the Panamera's interior.
I live in the south in the US and I just put the AMG in comfort everything, and just switch it to manual when I want to play the twisties and it’s fine. Our roads are like a 3rd world because of our government dysfunction. Remove the muffler and it sounds great, lots of room for the dog, kids, Costco, and I can still powerslide out of corners with only quarterly puking from passengers.
A very pleasant 26 minute ride and review.
Being from the US, I didn’t understand a word……except I believe you liked the Mercedes best ! ?
Great review and verdict. Can’t wait for the C63 S estate vs. RS4 Avant vs. upcoming M3 Touring!
When the new M4 Comp is faster than the RS6 I don’t hold out much hope for the RS4.
@@jryalls Me neither. But the fastest isn’t always the most fun. Although that applies more to the C63 now than the RS4…
I throughly enjoyed this comprehensive comparison.
Great video for my week end thank you guys
I love all the 3 😍
I loved my w213 E63 estate. I even tracked it a handful of times. However there were things about it that just didn't quite gel with me. I have since place the order for a Panamera GTS sport turismo to replace it. I drove the RS6 and it was just horrid. I don't get the hype. It's pretty I suppose
Cool sir. Can't go wrong with Porsche. How so was the Audi horrible?
@@dinhomashele7203 touch screen HVAC is a no no for me. It's also part of why I didn't go with the Taycan (which otherwise I loved) but it was how the RS6 drove that made me frustrated. It simply didn't behave as nicely as my e63 on a back road. But I am the one guy who tracks everything he owns. I have videos on my RUclips of me on track in my gt3, macan GTS, and e63. If it doesn't work well at the limit I am just not too keen on it. Nothing wrong with the RS6. It's just not for me
Cool cool. Also not an Audi fan😂
Excited to see your wagon Rich! I've had my 4s Sport Turismo since 2017-2018 with the sport package. Best driving wagon imo
@@sportturismo_4s definitely best driving wagon but the e63 is close ish'
Does anyone know the name of the podcast Matt referred to with the ride and handling engineer on it? Thank you,! Great video!
Which car has better steering feedback?
The E63s or Panamera?
The e63s amg all the way
The E63 is the ugliest of the 3 to me and that has to mean something when spending this kind of money
I liked the e63s design way more than the porsche imo
I think the e63 is quite attractive, the porsche is definetly the ugliest out of the 3.
I’d probably agree, but being the ugliest in 3 quite good looking cars doesn’t necessarily make it ugly overall. The Audi looks the best with that road presence and stance, the Porsche is prettier.
I’ve owned an RS4, my dream car is a 997 GT3, but the noise, dynamics and general hooliganism of the E63S make it the pick of the group here for me.
I don’t care for how the Mercedes wagon looks. The Panamera and RS6 are beautiful though
Overall a pretty good review. But just don't watch it while you're having popcorn and beer. Most of the time they talk as if they're in a library and it's hard to hear them.
E63s needs a bigger back seat. Can’t comfortably fit the car seat for the baby
Enjoyed that - thanks. Question is, can you even get a new E63s now? Haven't Mercedes pulled the V8?
no.. there is a brand new lineup of GT cars coming, the SL, GTC, GTR from merc with the V8 and partial hybrid system.
02:52. The most important sentence in this whole review.
Once you get a car that will hit 60 in around 4 or less you're splitting hairs if you think a few 10ths of a second really means anything at all. At least in the real world.
The look, cost and character of the car are what are important at that point.
Not sure what I'd pick. Generally, I prefer a Merc, but whilst it's now looking cartoonishly aggressive and stupid I think the RS6 is a bit better looking. The Porsche on the other hand has come on leaps and bounds since introduction but is looking a little tame.
Merc for the actual drive and engine.
Audi for the looks.
Porsche for the interior.
19:38. Have to disagree with Matt here, probably the primary reason a heavier car rides better than a lighter one is simple physics. Inertia.
23:58. James, did you say "semi discreetly", when describing the Audi? You cannot be serious.
Yes, we love Autocar!!
Should've included a GTC4lusso, just for fun . Either engine would do
I can't stt how you'd go wrong with any of those choices!
Very interesting! I wonder how sharp oder sharper the RS6 with its more stiff Suspension would be Driving Dynamically compared to the Cars in the Video ?
I think that while I agree with their decision, the commentators lack the communication of the cars themselves. When watching this video I hope to learn something however I learned what their thoughts were/are about daydreaming buying these cars. I really wish they spent more time discussing handling, exterior, interior, technology, and livability, of these cars. The constant interruption of each other and lack of previous communication was apparent. Autocar, I just wish that you would put in a little bit more effort to your videos as other channels do and understand the engineering of these cars before just saying that other people should know more about these cars than you because they drive on German roads. 90% of the video with you is discussing the ride comfort, which of course is important, however there is a serious lack of information about the rest of the car. Please going forward inform your viewers more instead of giving ridiculous hypotheticals about people owning barns of cars. I live in the neighborhood of people who own multiple Tesla‘s, a Porsche GT4 Cayman, a R32 GTR, a Mercedes E 63S, Classic Dodge charger RT(unknown year), Subaru foresters, and early 2000s Honda civics(A large diversity) just to name a few. You seem to miss out on the fact that a lot of people are buying these estate cars as their only daily drivers not an addition to a barn of cars.
That RS6 is too wide for your roads it's crazy.
‘It is the weakling of the group, it’s only got 590bhp’ (RS6) 😆 what a ‘group’ of mean machines.
They were being sarcastic
AMG for me, thanks!
Audi for the looks, that's a mean estate. Shame they don'r come as a sedan.
Really enjoyed that review just wished you done a bit more on the practicality of the cars, as this would be why you would choose one of them. I still can't choose a winner for so many different reasons.
I’m currently looking at something in exactly this space and it’s so difficult. The merc has a lot more space but just not really my thing.
@@sammooresphoto the infotainment on the merc looks impossible to use to me. I’d go for either the panamera or an Alpina I think.
@@sammooresphoto Have you had a whole heap of kids since your last podcast? Is that why we haven’t had one in a while? 🤣
@@jryalls haha, podcast or video? Podcasts have been every week!
I’d go the Audi without air suspension or the non hybrid Turbo S Panamera but if someone chucked the keys of the Merc to me I’d probably keep it.
Mercedes is the most serious
Around 5.30. How’s the steering? Reply - it changes the direction of the car!!!!
RS6.
The Panamera is surely covering all bases and as such can be all things to all men? 🤔
Great video! What is the name of the podcast with the ride and handling engineer?
all this "save time" by stomping on the accelerator is of course, nonsense
By launching your car once a day, you're going to need new tires every month, and certainly, a tire change will cost you quite a lot more than the time gained smashing the throttle completely.
Dude they were just joking. Quite obvious actually
The Intercooler podcast!
Good Review I think RS 6 Most popular one
E63s always 🔥
Tbh I’m not too interested in great dynamics and handling. All I want is straight line speed and acceleration, low down torque, comfortable ride, and lovely interior.
Would like to drive the Mercedes Benz, I have a 2021 Audi RS6 and couldn’t be happier with it, the Mercedes must be spectacular to beat it as an all rounder
Title should be..."Two of the most boring car journalists come together for a SNOOZE-OUT!"...Step it up Autocar
RS6 is an RS6
Default best fast estate money can buy whilst being infinity more interesting to look at than any M5 or its peers in this or any group test 👍
Mercedes are lovely Hero cars but In the company of an RS6 this AMG estate looks like a smacked ARSE.
Money no object ..I'd have the Porsche all day long....!
In Dash IWC clock has been eliminated
It has a digital one in the menu now
Given the choice of the three…. Sadly I fell to sleep ….. no idea ? I rather watch paint dry ?
Terrible sound quality...sounds like they just mumbling to each other
I totally agree with the outcome but now i need an hour sleep.
how about Volvo v60 hybrid 🙏😊🇮🇩☮️❤️
Buy the Porsche if you want to drive it hard on corners!
@18:45 what podcast are they discussing?
I just dont know what to say, you guys have the dream job, acces to these cars yet ypu sound so booring that is a let down. The winner is the RS6 looks best, drives well, is comfortable.peace
Benz for me
Am I the only who doesn't the rear quarter of the E63s estate.
I know this was an Estate shootout, but where does a Macan GTS fall in your eyes if dropped in the middle of this. Reviewers always talk how it drives like a car….
This review is dull.
Just driving about and speaking in very unexcited tones.
It would be better if one random fellow did this, not a journalist
Surely you chose the wrong Panamera ?
The latest Turbo S has more power than either of the 2 rivals (circa 630hp) but without the huge weight penalty of the E-Hybrid
Not to mention its closer in price too
I was thinking the same.
I’m pretty sure they would’ve gone for the turbo s if they could. I’m guessing Porsche UK don’t have one in their press fleet…
@@ilcapitano010 you may be right.
Several UK youtubers have driven the facelift panamera turbo s (MrJWW, Mat Watson, RBR & Rory Reid iirc) but its always been the saloon not the Sport Turismo
Want the Porsche, admire but loath the Audi but probably buy the AMG. Or an older Panamera.
What is missing from this test is the ALPINA B5
Why does Porsche always provide the ehybrid? The best Panameras are the GTS and the Turbo S. The Turbo S would have been a much better comparison.
Audi is always plum last in every comparison test, perhaps you should stack it against a Davia Lodgy or a Lada Granta Wagon.
E63s
A great vid, however 5 advert breaks in 27min is bordering on me unsubscribing…
2325 kg is the weight of the porker panamera

the passenger,would you speak louder?
i want Porsche to made panamera turbo GT like cayenne
C`mon you didnt even know whether its the new RS6 or a facelift and you calling it RS4 so are you really able to be objective??
The guys a chav... anyone with brains and class buys an RS6... wouldnt be caught dead in an E63s estate, that looks like the back end of a train... RS6 looks the best, built the best, is subtle, best allrounder... sure its abit clinical, but then you bring out your GT3 if you want a proper track car... plus there will be an RS6 performance that will come out shortly...
