Audi is beautiful sure, but all those glass surface would make me go wild with microfibre towels on each of those glossy surfaces Merc, the prefacelift car looks better in my eyes and it's cheaper so that wins for me
Has to be the AMG. It’s subtle, it doesn’t shout about it’s capability, just delivers when you want it too. The Audi is too “glitter ball” and toy car looking. It’s “shouty” and might as well have a neon sign saying “Grrrrrr” just to add to the attention seeking looks. It’s a 21st century cartoon car from a remake of Whacky Races. Understated, charismatic and characterful is the way to go these days and for that reason (and I’m biased as a Mercedes owner), the AMG E63S is the better performance estate car.
A properly comprehensive review, well argued, and it was the result of 10 hours of driving, yet video-wise it seemed like it was only 2 corners. A bit more variety, please.
No it isn’t because the clutches aren’t sandwiched together like they were in the old 7-speed trans coupled with the M157 engine in the old E63. Although it is a similar configuration in the new 9 speed the power is dissipated through the transmission in a ‘dual clutch manner’ unlike the wet clutch system in the old MCT. That is why this is referred to as a dual clutch trans even though it is more similar to the old mct than for example; the 6speed dual clutch trans you would find in a Porsche 911. It’s also likely to do with the stick surrounding the old 7speed Mct as it was not a very good multi role transmission being known as the Achilles heel or chink in the armour of the w212.5 E63. The m157 was a massively underrated engine and was let down massively by the Mct. So don’t confuse the two 😅
The 7 speed mct was designed for the m156 which due to its normal aspiration, has different power characteristics to the more powerful and torquey m157. This explains why the mct struggles in the w212.5 e63. However Amg’s decision makes sense as it would of been way too expensive and nonsensical to design a completely new transmission for the m157 when they knew it would be discontinued in less than 5 years. I believe the only reason amg changed the engine in the face lift was to bring the w212 E63 fuel efficiency and power output on par with the recently released f10 m5.
The only reason I can think, as to why Mercedes used the m157 in the new s63 at the time, instead of the m176 4.0 tt from the amg gt is that they wanted the power and torque of the proved m157 for the heavy s class until the release of the m178 in 2017 which officially rendered the m157 completely obsolete in every way. It was also probably down to the fact that the 6 speed dual clutch mated to the m176 wouldn’t of been suitable in an over 2 tonne a class as it was designed for the lighter amg gt and c class models.
Just doesn't have the boot space sadly, which is why people go for estates! Whilst the Porsche is lovely, I went for an E63s because 2 retrievers and needed the space.
It's 2024, how well have these two holding up? You can picked up a brand new 2025 RS6 Performance for $140k (US). Since 2023 is the last year for E63 S, on Autotrader, a used 2023 E63 S Estate with less then 1,000 miles is averaging $170k (fully loaded like the 2025 RS6), used E63 S Estate averaging 5,000 miles is averaging $140k. What about a used 2023 RS6 comparable to a 2023 E63S Estate, well, if you are an Audi fanboy, you may not be happy as they don't hold their value too well, 2023 RS6 less 5,000 miles averaging $122k (high options) the lowest miles was a 3,022 with little option at $115k.
Calling audi old and bland is an understatement. Merc looks far better both inside and out. And spanks the audi around the track and in the straights all while also being more fun to drive
Looks-wise the Audi is just far superior. The Merc's looks and design are just underwhelming. Lucky they have that power plant. And for all his waffle about Merc's all wheel drive system, Audi's legendary Quattro system is still the one all the others try to copy.
Far superior??? Pfff everything from the triangular air intakes to the messy rear end with that awful plastic exhaust surround/diffuser in addition to the cartoony hugeness of the car on the road. The designers were obviously high af and designed the car with a ott fan made sketch instead of the original designs
Audi obviously forgot that they were designing an estate, and designed the next hot wheels car. The only thing that makes the c8 acceptable on public roads is to have it in a very dark colour to somewhat hide its ugliness.
My wife was in the market for a new car and she so loved her '01 Allroad that she wanted another Audi Avant. Audi was not selling them in the US (except for the too small, A4 based Allroad). She couldn't find anything she liked until she came across the E63s... Finding a dealer with an allotment to get one was the first challenge, then we had to wait for the next model year, '20, as they were done making the '19's. We love this luxury car... and it's an absolute thug when you want it to be. Even as long time Audi fans, we're glad we got the Merc.
The looks of the RS6 alone kills the merc! Most people don’t like wagons to begin with so why make it uncomfortable and unattractive? There’s nothing like an RS6!!!
Great review, well done to you both👏🏻👏🏻🍻. The Merc looks like an awkward turtle with its front end which seems out of proportion from the A pillar back. The Merc’s wheels look like they belong on a shopping trolly😂. The Audi looks like a complete package with sensational looks all round. 🤔I think the Audi wins the comparison in looks🤭🤫😂 and also inside with the interior, comfort and for the family and pets. Cheers!🍻
Na. The Audi looks overly, in fact I'd say ridiculously aggressive. To the point that it's beginning to look stupid. The outgoing model had it just about right. Reminds me of when I was younger and people would go to Demon Tweaks or Carnoisseur and buy the biggest wheels they could find to stick on their car. The Merc certainly looks odd but theAudi is getting accolades more for its silly looks than its driving and that's the reason that it usually loses these tests. They've moved on from the Hp wars to the aggressive bodykit wars. A shame as Audi used to be the best of the bunch in the field of just enough muscle to look right.
You're blind af. If merc looks like an awkward turtle then audi looks worse than an awkward turtle 💀 E63 blows rs6 out of the water in every possible way. Way better looking both inside and in. Way more better performance both handling and acceleration. Way better sounding. Way more fun to drive. I could go on and on
