My living situation is a bit unconventional at the moment. I am living in a space of approximately 6ft x 5 ft. So my one and only room is, by necessity, a multipurpose room. I do fold up my bedding and place it out of the way when waking in the morning. After using anything, it has to be tucked neatly away into its place to make room for doing something else in the space. I do also tend to a regular sleep time because my work shift has me waking at 4am Monday thru Friday. One thing I do not do is to eat there. I don't want my space getting soiled with food remnants.

Very excellent advice you offer about sleeping. Fifteen years ago a psychotherapist advised me to each night just before going to sleep recall three blessings of the day. I called it my positive event review. I did this every night and it changed my attitude and outlook. I am now positive and I smile and laugh a lot in spite of the dire circumstances of the world and my lack of material success. I like your emphasis on recalling the good deeds of kindness and service done during the day and resting in a sea of merit. I will try this.

I had the same problem as you did. My mind is very overactive at nighttime. Recently, I've been waking up at 5am and setting a consistent sleep schedule. I sleep less but the quality is much higher.

After watching this about 5 days ago, Immediately tore apart my small livingroom/entertainment/sleeping room threw out the bed frame that was taking up about 1/3rd of it, reorganized, and simplified everything, put a thin futon on the floor and am wondering why I didn't do it all earlier! It's a huge improvement and I've slept for 7 hours through the last two nights, which is definitely unusual. I'm still not totally onboard with giving up some bedtime habits, like laptop or tv, but this inspired me to exist and behave more intentionally in my living space and experiment with separating sleeping more from living. Making the bed up neatly so it is not available to flop onto randomly is helpful. There is a start (rolling out and making bed) and finish (rolling back up and neatly folding bed) to the sleep cycle. I've also been going over my positive achievements at bed and again on waking in the morning. Thanks much!

Sounds like you showed that room whose boss 😅 a small challenge for you try turning your cell phone off for at least 48 to 72 hours unplug your TV and laptop . And meditate become familiar with yourself your intelligence . And surely you are not addicted to your phone so this will be an easy task because if you were addicted you would be weak and if you think this is impossible and you can't do it it shows you the truth. There's no better person than yourself to invest time effort love and simply just paying attention to it and not everything else because you're letting your body control you instead of your consciousness it could be the reason your body is waking you up and won't allow you to sleep because it wants to be entertained ☮️ Out

Your story resembles mine with my 4 months of ordination in forest monastery in Thailand. Long before that, I had been suffering from chronic insomnia and alcohol addiction for almost 10 years. Just like you, I had to rely on sleeping pills. At the beginning, it was extremely difficult to adapt to the way the monks were, especially the sleep cycle. Throughout the ordination, it taught me a lot of things I had never known before in the secular world. To sleep with sea of merit is what we hardly considered to do before in the world outside. They never taught us to consider sth like these. Every night is fraught with burdens and duties. I can say that those periods are the most precious time of my life. Now, I have stayed sober and my insomnia has been gone since then. Thanks for sharing these useful suggestions to other people. You definitely got a knack for simplifying and extracting the principles from the story :)

The last advise I find the most helpful: Before going to sleep, as you lie there, think of your good deeds that day or week. Don't reflect on problems or conflicts. Think positive thoughts in other words, whatever they may be, happy thoughts, no miserable ones that give you anxiety, tension. To rest of course one must relax. How can you relax when you review problems? You can't. That's another reason why our day hopefully should be filled with positive things, so we remember them. It's not always possible, but if it is, fill your day with positive, happy, loving, charitable, Godly things, & then you can relax, feel peace, & sleep. I'm going to work on this as I get bad insomnia & the same as him, I was a dancer, night owl all my life. I want to change.

I’ve only recently come across and started to watch your channel; I find it peaceful but also thought provoking. Today's post on better sleep (how it calms and heals not just the body but the spirit and soul) struck a chord. I’m definitely a Nightowl - even as a child it was always a struggle to wake up early and get going. The 9 to 5 work life was immensely difficult until about 35 years ago when I started working nights only. Life changed then … for the better I thought! . I work in a fast paced and stressful corporate environment and for years I actually thrived and fed off it. Lately I feel more fatigued than ever (with just about anything and everything) and many of the things that once excited and drew me in no longer brings satisfaction but mostly leave feelings of antipathy and a general lack of enthusiasm. A regular shift is 12 hours but often I'll work upwards of 14 or more, not to mention the ton of extra O/T hours for the taking. At the end of a shift when I finally get to bed it can take an hour or 2 just to “unwind” before falling asleep so I turn to the TV or RUclips till I eventually drop off. The TV is always playing in the background; the alarm clock projects on to the ceiling; the phone just a hand's stretch away. For all intent and purpose the bedroom is the everything room - sleeping, dressing, entertainment, dining and, in all honesty, somewhat of a hoarders’ paradise! What's the use making the bed if only to jump back in a few hours later, and why bother putting stuff away when it’s so convenient having them right at hand when you need them? Anyway, thank you Nick for your videos and teachings… there's much to unpack and take on board from today's message; perhaps soon I may be able to come back and tell you I'm starting to see some positive changes. Stay safe and be blessed.

This is such sound advice, thank you Nick. I think many people are taught to never acknowledge themselves and their good deeds or rather they have a skewed sense of when and how to acknowledge their acts of good will (i.e. on a social platform to gain applause from an external source). I hope this video reaches many more people so that we understand just how important it is to see ourselves clearly in order to become better human beings.

Shower or hot bath before bed, read in bed, go to bed at the same time, magnesium supplements, no caffeine after 5, these are the things that have helped me. The secret is to just keep to a routine so when you go to bed your brain knows it’s time to sleep. I just keep on reading until I fall asleep because a lot of the time if I just turn the lamp off I start overthinking. So reading is the most important thing for me

Thank you. Your videos are very helpful. This video comes at a perfect time where I need to deal with sleep which is getting affected by being overworked.
I have become aware and have changed a lot of my habits. Vegan, extreme minimalist, almost zero-waste and now spiritual training to truly be human. While I cannot let go of my responsibilities to my family your videos are very helpful and helping me deal with the pain of awareness, of realising what we humans are, have become and the countless lives we are hurting needlessly. We, the human, have become the problem. This plagues every waking moment of my existence. My awakening was a result of being exposed to the cruelties of animal farming in the developed nations and deforstation that is caused by my consumption which is devastating the orangutans, gorillas and chimps amongst other wildlife. I donate .... a lot of money or as much as I can afford. This is my only solace. I work to earn to donate to save animals and raise awareness of their plight.
Thank you for also addressing the question of is being a buddhist monk selfish. I have always wondered about this. I get it now. We need to first fix ourselves. I am working on that.
Thank you and please keep these videos coming. They are very helpful. I am also reading Attisha's lamp to enlightenment and the books by the dalai lama on how to practice.
I aim to live my life by firstly by NOT being the problem and secondly by reducing the suffering of others.
Once Covid is over or reduced I plan on visiting the buddhist monastary and seeking spiritual guidance and supporting the community in return.

Such inspiring words. I have lived in a Western culture for 50 years and have been consumed with the ideas of constantly trying to better yourself and living a materialistic life. I married my Thai wife 2 years ago and discovered the Buddhist culture and the concept of Merit. It has totally changed my life from being goal driven to wanting to improve my spiritual wellness. Fortunately our plan is to move back to a small village in Isaan, Thailand in 3 years time and hopefully live this way of life until we depart this world.

I have no probleem with sleeping. I always have prioritize sleep. I always sleep at 10am. And I wake up without alarm every morning at the same time. 1hour before bed I stop with technology. I wish everyone who would contact me a good night and I drink my warm milk and chant and meditate. I am someone who loves the time before technology came in our life and try to live like that. My daily life is for focusing on learning and reading. I love cooking vegetarian. I love to live a life that I focus on my body signals of hunger and sleep. The Dutch way of living, what most doesn't do anymore, rest-regularity-cleanniness as looking after your body. Thank you Nick for all your knowledge. I will see if any can be improved in my life.
