How's your current sleep habit? and did you find any tips to be helpful?
I watch yt for an approx 1 hour before bedtime, yes yes yes, every night. It relaxes me 😉 like watching your channel, so ZEN.
I've been suffering from insomnia for at least 12 years now. Work is extremely stressful 😨
I will try your tips tho. Thank you 👍🏻 Nick!
@@juliaangelicaa5395 yes please try it out and feel free to update us on your progress :)
@gautam bk sadhu sadhu
All the tips are very helpful to me🤗
My living situation is a bit unconventional at the moment. I am living in a space of approximately 6ft x 5 ft. So my one and only room is, by necessity, a multipurpose room. I do fold up my bedding and place it out of the way when waking in the morning. After using anything, it has to be tucked neatly away into its place to make room for doing something else in the space. I do also tend to a regular sleep time because my work shift has me waking at 4am Monday thru Friday. One thing I do not do is to eat there. I don't want my space getting soiled with food remnants.
1. The bedroom is for sleep
2. Have a consistent sleep time
3. Make your bed
4. Not sleep on a luxurious bed
5. Sleep in a sea of merit
Thank you for your kindness 😊😊😊
thanks for your summary
Thank you for summarising.

I don’t know why, but it feels so peaceful, me as a Muslim watching his videos thinking how if everybody from the different religion background can get along each other. Lol, i’m just sharing, guys.
Have a nice day 💕💕💕
❤❤❤🙏 thank you
all the religion are the same teaching, people are the one made it different for their own .........
You’re not born a Muslim, you’re a human being.
@@olivercook873 actually, we are universal beings 😉
That is because most religions are dividing the world in good (us) and bad (others), whereas Buddhism is transcending good and bad, it is truly universal including everybody and everything.
A sea of merit? I'll have to try that. I usually sleep in a vast open ocean of anxiety.
😂😂😂😂 yes please try it and see if it helps.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂
Same... i usually dun zzz well
I usually listen to BBC world service all night, then fall asleep in the morning
Very excellent advice you offer about sleeping. Fifteen years ago a psychotherapist advised me to each night just before going to sleep recall three blessings of the day. I called it my positive event review. I did this every night and it changed my attitude and outlook. I am now positive and I smile and laugh a lot in spite of the dire circumstances of the world and my lack of material success. I like your emphasis on recalling the good deeds of kindness and service done during the day and resting in a sea of merit. I will try this.
Wonderful. Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
When I was living in a monastery in Thailand...meditating all day... not using electronics. I slept like a baby.
I had the same problem as you did. My mind is very overactive at nighttime. Recently, I've been waking up at 5am and setting a consistent sleep schedule. I sleep less but the quality is much higher.
I loved this video! You're a great speaker!
awww sadhu sadhu adam. thank you so much for your kind words 🙂🙂 hope you are doing well
After watching this about 5 days ago, Immediately tore apart my small livingroom/entertainment/sleeping room threw out the bed frame that was taking up about 1/3rd of it, reorganized, and simplified everything, put a thin futon on the floor and am wondering why I didn't do it all earlier! It's a huge improvement and I've slept for 7 hours through the last two nights, which is definitely unusual. I'm still not totally onboard with giving up some bedtime habits, like laptop or tv, but this inspired me to exist and behave more intentionally in my living space and experiment with separating sleeping more from living. Making the bed up neatly so it is not available to flop onto randomly is helpful. There is a start (rolling out and making bed) and finish (rolling back up and neatly folding bed) to the sleep cycle. I've also been going over my positive achievements at bed and again on waking in the morning. Thanks much!
Wow. This post is amazing and inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing this update. Its wondeful 💙💙💙🙏 keep up the great work.
Cheering you on from Thailand 😊
Sounds like you showed that room whose boss 😅 a small challenge for you try turning your cell phone off for at least 48 to 72 hours unplug your TV and laptop . And meditate become familiar with yourself your intelligence . And surely you are not addicted to your phone so this will be an easy task because if you were addicted you would be weak and if you think this is impossible and you can't do it it shows you the truth. There's no better person than yourself to invest time effort love and simply just paying attention to it and not everything else because you're letting your body control you instead of your consciousness it could be the reason your body is waking you up and won't allow you to sleep because it wants to be entertained ☮️ Out
Progress not perfection
Hey man, thank you, that sea of merits, in my 51 years of my life, this is the answer of enlightenment, my life has just got better 🙏
Wow. Sadhu sadhu ❤❤❤🙏
Sleeping in the sea of merits. Never came across such concept before!
Thank you so much for such a golden sharing. 👍
Awww thank you so much my friend. ❤❤❤🙏
I have been sleeping on a yoga mat for about two years. I don't even sleep in my bedroom. I find it very comfortable for me.
I don't sleep a lot though. Maybe about 5 to 6 hours and I feel great. I love the sound of water ... it putts me to sleep
Thank you for being so caring I will practice this from today I am a sri lankan and a born christian from a christian family too but I'm happy because I am being enlighten by Buddhism it gives me tears as I personally have undergone disaster in my life I have two beautiful most caring kids I make them to understand about the philosophy of Buddhism once again according to our culture May the triple gem bless you and protect you all stay blessed

Your story resembles mine with my 4 months of ordination in forest monastery in Thailand. Long before that, I had been suffering from chronic insomnia and alcohol addiction for almost 10 years. Just like you, I had to rely on sleeping pills. At the beginning, it was extremely difficult to adapt to the way the monks were, especially the sleep cycle. Throughout the ordination, it taught me a lot of things I had never known before in the secular world. To sleep with sea of merit is what we hardly considered to do before in the world outside. They never taught us to consider sth like these. Every night is fraught with burdens and duties. I can say that those periods are the most precious time of my life. Now, I have stayed sober and my insomnia has been gone since then. Thanks for sharing these useful suggestions to other people. You definitely got a knack for simplifying and extracting the principles from the story :)
ขอให้เจริญทางธรรมนะครับ
Awww thank you so much for sharing your story. That's beautiful. May I rejoice in the merits from your time in monkhood. Also congratulations on your sobriety. That's a very big deal. Keep up the great work. I'm cheering for you from Thailand. Be safe my friend 🙂🙂
The last thing you think about before you go to bed is the first thing in your mind when you wake up - it is really true! Thank you Nick for the tips.
Sadhu sadhu. Thank you Mao :)
That's similar with rebirth.
I feel so called out and I am so grateful I get teary eyed. I've struggled with sleep my whole life and this video made me reflect on the few times in my life when I fell asleep the fastest and it was the times I slept in tents and other minimalistic environments. Thank you, I think you gave me answers no doctors or therapists have been able to give me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
You're so welcome!I hope it's helpful. Hang in there my friend :) you got this.
When you start this video and within a few seconds you realise this is the right video to share with your friends, then you know it's worth it.
Awww. Sadhu. That's so kind of you 🙏🙏🙏
Thailand is a blessed country with beautiful people, history, animals, nature🙏🏻✨❤️☀️🌈🌱🕊
Yes it's so beautiful ☺️
I get up at 5am everyday, when I wake up , I get up make my bed & don’t go back until bedtime, so I suppose I’m nearly there, I just need to crack not waking up 3-4 times a night 😊 oh & I always think about what I’m grateful for before going to sleep ❤️
adding yoga at sunset in the form of asanas and meditation before you go to bed may help prevent the interruptions you are experiencing. Tiring the body through physical exertion and quieting the mind by meditating has shifted my life in many directions.

Thank you Simone. Have a speedy recovery my friend. Wishing you well 😃
Your honesty vibes reach even through the video to your followers, thank you for sharing these tips.
sadhu sadhu. thank you for your kind words my friend :) Greetings from thailand.
Excellent advice! One thing that you didn’t mention is to not drink alcohol. This messed up my sleep for years until I quit and my sleep quality immediately improved. Really important to follow all of the 5 (or 8) precepts to experience the benefits! Thanks again for your wonderful videos. A refuge in the midst of a difficult season!
Thank you so much my friend. And yes cutting alcohol is critical 😊
Dear Makarios, please try not to take caffeine 12 hours prior to bed.It has a quarter life of 12 hours and it effects your sleep quality.I would like to recommend you to watch ted talk and interviews of Matt Walker to aqquire some scientific knowledge about sleep.Take care, sleep well.
I’m another video you mentioned eating lightly or not at all in the evening, so your stomach is empty when you sleep. That’s an important one for me. Blessings, Venerable Nick!!
Wonderful Andy :)
I am so looking forward to trying tonight for the first time, sleeping in a sea of merit! Thank you for putting this out there
Wonderful Danielle. Let us know how it goes :-)
Nick I don't know how to thank you for this, I have tried these little changes in my sleep routine, realized I suffered from overthinking at night so it was a moment for thinking and not for sleeping. Meditating and sleeping on a sea of merit has saved my night's sleep (I stopped sleep medication after two years). Thanks from the bottom of my heart
Wow Caro! Thank you for sharing and I’m glad it’s helpful. Keep up the great work and happy sleeping 😴
Nick, I've seen so many videos of different people advising me on how to do this, or how to do that....But after following you for so long and watching your content as it comes out you are the only one that I actually take seriously because you truly are keeping everyone's best interest at heart! Beautiful location you're filming from this time too! Thank you for being such a constant in my life my friend and for all of the great videos and advice! ❤️👍🙏
Awww thank you for your kind words. I'm still learning also as a newer monk so I'm just trying to share what I can. I'm glad it resonates with you. 🧡🧡🧡🙏
I hope this will help me to get a better sleep tonight, an issue I have had through all my life since I was a child. Thank you for your kind lessons, Monk.

Wow thank you so much for your kind words Jennifer. So touching ❤❤🙏
Venerable Nick I thank you for this and all your videos. Thanks for taking the time to educate and enlighten the world. I have watched you for sometime but never commented. I should know better since you've done so much to help get me more balanced. I watch your videos over and over. Never stop sharing. You're making more of a difference than you might know. Namaste 🙏🏾
Awww thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share. Thank you for the support. Hope you are well 😊

1) Your outside environment reflects your inner world and
2) Sleep in a sea of merits.

This episode was such a gift. You have no idea how you are changing life for the better. Will you be sharing a video on how chanting improves well-being?
Awww thank you so much Shannon. And thank you for the feedback. I will try to find a way to incorporate your suggestions 😊😊
the ocean waves behind him is so soft and peaceful
Sadhu Sadhu 😊😊
I have been suffering from insomnia for years, and I thank God I chanced upon your video. Tonight I'm going to try sleeping in a sea of merits.
I'm glad it can help. Please try it out and keep us updated ❤❤
The last advise I find the most helpful: Before going to sleep, as you lie there, think of your good deeds that day or week. Don't reflect on problems or conflicts. Think positive thoughts in other words, whatever they may be, happy thoughts, no miserable ones that give you anxiety, tension. To rest of course one must relax. How can you relax when you review problems? You can't. That's another reason why our day hopefully should be filled with positive things, so we remember them. It's not always possible, but if it is, fill your day with positive, happy, loving, charitable, Godly things, & then you can relax, feel peace, & sleep. I'm going to work on this as I get bad insomnia & the same as him, I was a dancer, night owl all my life. I want to change.
Sadhu. Thank you so much for sharing this 🧡🧡🧡🙏
Same for me....it is really a beautifu and positivel way to go into sleep...
Watching this at 3 am.. instead of sleeping...
😂😂😂
me too))
🤣😂😂😂
Very funny and sadly true 😂😂😂
I’ve only recently come across and started to watch your channel; I find it peaceful but also thought provoking. Today's post on better sleep (how it calms and heals not just the body but the spirit and soul) struck a chord. I’m definitely a Nightowl - even as a child it was always a struggle to wake up early and get going. The 9 to 5 work life was immensely difficult until about 35 years ago when I started working nights only. Life changed then … for the better I thought! . I work in a fast paced and stressful corporate environment and for years I actually thrived and fed off it. Lately I feel more fatigued than ever (with just about anything and everything) and many of the things that once excited and drew me in no longer brings satisfaction but mostly leave feelings of antipathy and a general lack of enthusiasm. A regular shift is 12 hours but often I'll work upwards of 14 or more, not to mention the ton of extra O/T hours for the taking. At the end of a shift when I finally get to bed it can take an hour or 2 just to “unwind” before falling asleep so I turn to the TV or RUclips till I eventually drop off. The TV is always playing in the background; the alarm clock projects on to the ceiling; the phone just a hand's stretch away. For all intent and purpose the bedroom is the everything room - sleeping, dressing, entertainment, dining and, in all honesty, somewhat of a hoarders’ paradise! What's the use making the bed if only to jump back in a few hours later, and why bother putting stuff away when it’s so convenient having them right at hand when you need them? Anyway, thank you Nick for your videos and teachings… there's much to unpack and take on board from today's message; perhaps soon I may be able to come back and tell you I'm starting to see some positive changes. Stay safe and be blessed.
Oh wow. thank you for taking the time to share this. I think MANY people can relate to what you just describe. Yes, please try some of these techniques or make small shifts and please keep up updated :) and welcome to the channel my friend :)
This is such sound advice, thank you Nick. I think many people are taught to never acknowledge themselves and their good deeds or rather they have a skewed sense of when and how to acknowledge their acts of good will (i.e. on a social platform to gain applause from an external source). I hope this video reaches many more people so that we understand just how important it is to see ourselves clearly in order to become better human beings.
Thank you so much erin 😊 hope you are doing well
Shower or hot bath before bed, read in bed, go to bed at the same time, magnesium supplements, no caffeine after 5, these are the things that have helped me. The secret is to just keep to a routine so when you go to bed your brain knows it’s time to sleep. I just keep on reading until I fall asleep because a lot of the time if I just turn the lamp off I start overthinking. So reading is the most important thing for me
Awesome. Glad you found what has worked for you. Thank you for sharing these tips 😊😊
Thank you for this, it's eye-opening! I'm doing almost everything wrong, apparently, and struggling with PTSD as well, so I barely sleep at all, even with meditation and other mindful practices.
I will put your advice into practice and perhaps let you know in a few days.
Your channel has been valuable to me. 🙏🏼

Thank you. Your videos are very helpful. This video comes at a perfect time where I need to deal with sleep which is getting affected by being overworked.
I have become aware and have changed a lot of my habits. Vegan, extreme minimalist, almost zero-waste and now spiritual training to truly be human. While I cannot let go of my responsibilities to my family your videos are very helpful and helping me deal with the pain of awareness, of realising what we humans are, have become and the countless lives we are hurting needlessly. We, the human, have become the problem. This plagues every waking moment of my existence. My awakening was a result of being exposed to the cruelties of animal farming in the developed nations and deforstation that is caused by my consumption which is devastating the orangutans, gorillas and chimps amongst other wildlife. I donate .... a lot of money or as much as I can afford. This is my only solace. I work to earn to donate to save animals and raise awareness of their plight.
Thank you for also addressing the question of is being a buddhist monk selfish. I have always wondered about this. I get it now. We need to first fix ourselves. I am working on that.
Thank you and please keep these videos coming. They are very helpful. I am also reading Attisha's lamp to enlightenment and the books by the dalai lama on how to practice.
I aim to live my life by firstly by NOT being the problem and secondly by reducing the suffering of others.
Once Covid is over or reduced I plan on visiting the buddhist monastary and seeking spiritual guidance and supporting the community in return.
This is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this and its wonderful how you are giving and working on yourself. Keep up the great work and greetings to you all the way from Thailand 😊😊😊
I have been watching your videos for a while and I love it. I also lived in L.A and just recently moved to Colorado Spings. I left the fast paced crazy L.A life style behind and feel my quality of sleep has improved. Thank you for your tips and for sharing so much wisdom with us 🙏.
you're welcome. thank you so much anna :) Colorado springs sounds peaceful.
Such inspiring words. I have lived in a Western culture for 50 years and have been consumed with the ideas of constantly trying to better yourself and living a materialistic life. I married my Thai wife 2 years ago and discovered the Buddhist culture and the concept of Merit. It has totally changed my life from being goal driven to wanting to improve my spiritual wellness. Fortunately our plan is to move back to a small village in Isaan, Thailand in 3 years time and hopefully live this way of life until we depart this world.
Oh wonderful. Yes the concept of merit is so critical. Good luck in your move and if you're ever in Chiang Mai, feel free to come visit us at the papae meditation retreat 😊😊
Although I have no problem falling asleep but I watched till the end because I can relate to your tips, thank you for explaining in such a sensible way.
Thank you Jayne 😊😊 greetings to you from Thailand
This is the first time I watched your videos and they’re amazing. Sea of merit is something that I really should practice. Thank you! 🙏
Awww thank you so much and welcome to the channel 😊😊😊❤
I have no probleem with sleeping. I always have prioritize sleep. I always sleep at 10am. And I wake up without alarm every morning at the same time. 1hour before bed I stop with technology. I wish everyone who would contact me a good night and I drink my warm milk and chant and meditate. I am someone who loves the time before technology came in our life and try to live like that. My daily life is for focusing on learning and reading. I love cooking vegetarian. I love to live a life that I focus on my body signals of hunger and sleep. The Dutch way of living, what most doesn't do anymore, rest-regularity-cleanniness as looking after your body. Thank you Nick for all your knowledge. I will see if any can be improved in my life. Much love. Xx
This is so wonderful Irma. It seems you've been able to develop a good sleep habit and routine. That's great. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing :)

Thank you for sharing with us your wisdom, insights and experience. I am a Christian and i am from India but i find Buddhism has plenty of wisdom and life guidelines that are related to our day to day life . One thing that I've practiced for the past two years when i was stucked in life is gratitude like how you said and also to sleep in time by leaving my thoughts behind and i feel like my anxiety and mood swings also decreased when i have a good sleep .

When we moved to a new house, I made a point to not allow a TV in the bedroom. This did not go well with my husband. I must say for the past year the quality of my sleep improved drastically. Before falling asleep. I list all the things I am grateful for. The list are great and simple ( grateful to be alive, a visit with a friend, flowers… I also add some prayers and positive thoughts for people.
Thanks for sharing!! I'm glad it has improved. keep up the great work :)
Thank you Shifu for sharing your subtle yet profound wisdom. It has really improved my sleep. I’m so grateful…🙏🙏🙏
You are so welcome. thank you roger :)
I personally can't sleep without over thinking especially after my father's death. I always watch a movie or video just to be able to sleep. This video is indeed very useful and inspiring. Also totally irrelevant but the landscape behind you is so pretty it's like your standing in front of a painting.
Yeah I can only imagine how difficult it would be after a big loss like that. One of the things we always do after our meditation is to share the pure energy/loving kindness we receive from our meditation to our loved ones, both deceased and alive :) I'm glad this video was useful. Thank you for sharing Alana.
I have some struggles with this because I work graveyard at the hospital so I have to be able to sleep during the day on the days I work. Thank you so much venerable sir!

Your channel has opened my eyes in such a relatable way. Why should I be so surprised to know that you were in the entertainment field with such an exciting life prior to becoming a Monk. I guess every induction into Monkhood is a story unique to itself :)
Awwwe thank you so much. This journey into monkhood has been quite the experience 😊😊
I remember as a infant and a young kid I could go to sleep in a matter of minutes, as I got older more things and responsibilities came into my mind and sometimes it can take a could take hours for me to finally fall asleep. It tells you something.
☺️☺️
A better sleep is to start by relax myself, find a good quiet place nature & listen 🎶 music for stimulation ..thats a life balance
wonderful 🙂🙂🙂
Im literally in my bedroom, on my computer, eating right now lol
😂😂😂
👍🏻💫🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
So much we can learn.
Thank you.
Great inspiration to change life. 🙏🙏🙏❤️
Sadhu Sadhu 😊😊 thank you so much
Oooh, I reflect at bedtime too. I call it train brain. I am a scorpio woman. Many of my virgo friends still train brain. Many people use alcohol, drugs, or bad habits to get through bedtime. Thank you for sharing the blessings, chores, and deeds you share for others to carry the good energy. Leaving a to do list for those of us who are trying to do better is so heartwarming. Please send love, we need to know more than ever what you are doing that is working for you and your family. Please, share! We love you. ❤️🌿🥰🌼🍀🧚🌈
Awwwe thank you so much for your kind words. I'll definitely do my best to share more 😊
You know us Geminis can train brain. I have 2 grown Scorpio children. It wasn't always easy with my daughter but now as I'm getting old, she is going to be our rock.
Hey, Nick!
Thank You so much, this is very helpful advices!
I wanted to share my observation that the amount of fresh air during sleep time and the quality of that air is having a great influence on sleep quality.
It is very neccessary to breathe oxygen for our cells to regenerate and balance the body systems : if i stay with opened window through the night time i feel much more fresh in the morning.
Oh yes. I agree. The air quality makes a big difference. We can tell a difference sleeping in the city versus the forest.
"The Bedroom is Only for Sleep"
Me, who lives in 10sqm dorm room and wants to go somewhere else but classes are over zoom and everything outside is shut down: I desperately wish that could be true.
Essentially for us this means still separating our “sleeping area” from our other distractions. In practice no games, no phone, no studying, no meditation in bed, because the bed is for sleep only. Hope this helps you, since I’m in a similar situation.
@@benjamino.7475 Yeah I don't have a bed I just have a mat similar to what the monks have and I spread it out when I sleep and put it away the rest of the time so it's not a "bedroom" the rest of the time and it helps. That was some nice advice from Alan Watts.
@@Iudicatio Indeed, that’s interesting advice
@@benjamino.7475 try reading the BIBLE,! THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD
As a non monk living in a Buddhist country and observing both lifestyles. Being a monk offers one a no worry lifestyle. All the trappings of modern life are removed. So no financial stress, no employment strees and no fatherly or marriage stress, giving one more time to reflect on spiritual nourishment, and so meditation and restful sleep come easier. Imo.
❤❤❤🙏
I agree a lot with what you say. If you have a wife and children you can be very busy. Add to this a job/career to make a living, the life of a monk is easier in many ways..
Thanks a lot! I`m passing right through a situation of bad sleep nights. Now I`m feeling more calm and with things on their place to solve this.
Wonderful 💙💙💙

Thanks Nick...am guilty of eating and chatting when in my bedroom and overthinking.I'm going to work on that. The scenery behind you is beautiful 🤗
Thank you so much ❤❤❤🙏
Here's a tip from me about how to get better sleep; turn off all electronics in your home an hour before you go to bed. The blue lights that are emitted can keep from sleeping.
Sadhu Sadhu 😊😊 thank you
Yes. The light stimulates your brain. Reading a book is ok. But the light emitted from devices, no.
I will be trying your list of suggestions. I’ve had two terrible years of not sleeping well. Mainly due to stress. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome julie :) I hope it helps.
Today I woke up at 4 am to practice Vipassana and during practice I was feeling drowsy then I went back to bed. I want to change this habit. I think so it will help me. I need to learn a lot. Thankyou🙏
Yes it takes diligence and practice to cultivate a new habit. Just keep practicing with kindness for yourself. No stress. Just do your best each day :)
@@nickkeomahavong01 Yes! I am trying to do that. Thankyou! Bhavatu Sabba Mangal.
