Hi, for all those wondering how to fix dead tines, here’s what I did : take those little pieces of fabric used to clean glasses and wiggle it under the tine. Then, grab the two edges of the fabric and very gentle lift the tine up. And then you can remove the fabric. It works like a charm ! :)
What piece of fabric are you talking about? The cloth? I tried but it would just stretch and not lift up the tine. I feel like you are talking about something else but that’s the only fabric I have with my glasses.
For everyone who plays another instrument that requires short nails, just so you know there are things called Kalimba Fingertips which you can put on your thumb to make it easier to play the kalimba then take it off to play your other instrument I’ve literally just been copy and pasting a message telling people that kalimba thumb picks in the replies to everyone saying they cant grow long nail lol. If you see someone comment they can’t play because they need short nails for another instrument please just tell them they can still play with thumb picks. The kalimba is such a beautiful instrument and it would be a shame if people didn’t play it because they thought they wouldn’t be able to because of their nails.

About the nail thing: your nails also can't be too long because the skin of your finger has to touch the tab before your nail to avoid that ugly "zz" noise when playing one note more than once. 2-3 mm of length is recommended

I am so glad i found this!! I got a second hand kalimba last summer at a flea market, its in great condition, and it it was a bit out of tune, but i managed to fix it. The downside is that it only has nine out of the seventeen it needs. I want to learn how to play, and i have managed to learn a little, but it is incredibly difficult. And im already familiar with a wood one. So, thank you so much for this video!!!! I will be coming back repeatedly!!!
Fun fact, I grew out my nails before getting my Kalimba and broke them while playing so I had to cut them short. My short nails still did the job though. In fact I like shorter nails more while playing the Kalimba, it feels less weird. Of course you still need some nail, so don't cut them to short!
My first Kalimba was the kimi kalimba and it was great , my nails were originally already long , it took me a few week to quite get the hang of it , I’m not 3 weeks in and I have not even regretted even buying it
Love that you share your aquired tips. So giving. Greatly appreciated. You play beautifully. I hope I will learn and make swift progress too. Thank you. 😉👍♥️

Thanks for this guide, i tried downloading the Kalimba thru an app for a phone and I think it's much better to practice on an actual Kalimba. For the notes, tabs or chords for Kalimba, I tried the bamboo flute notes, I think it could help others practicing the Kalimba.
I broke one of my nails recently so i had to cut it totally and now I have to wait and can't do covers.. I tried to play but it sounded different when I recorded.. :(
Thank you so much for this video and the info you’ve included. I’m just starting out with my kalimba and your video helps a lot! 👍 And I loved seeing some of the songs you have in your song journal!
Kalimba old traditional instrument to the Shona people of Zimbabwe. They consist of a wooden board with attached staggered metal tines amazing to how popular it is across the world 🌍 🥰😍🥰😍and how refined and chic they’re being made these days 🤩
I found somewhere and read that Kalimba is the easiest music instrument and I was very excited to learn since when I was a child, my fingers are short so I cannot play any instrument. I don't really get into those arts and musicals because I was never been encouraged to. Now that I watched this video, it makes me want to comfirm on buying this Kalimba. I already tried to play this but *virtually* so it would be nice to have it for real. :>
ah good to know the wooden ones are beginner friendly. i’ve been wanting a kalimba for a while and a bit ago i was out with my mother at a market and i saw a stall that was selling handmade decorations and they had a couple of wooden kalimbas with pretty floral designs carved into the fronts so my mother bought one for me for christmas
Sorry to hear that :( Its risky buying online due to stuff like that happening... So if you have some music stores around you, it's safer to buy your Kalimba there. I'm planning to do that on my next purchase :)
@@1er1s on one of her videos she shares his to "fix" Dead tines which is to tune them a lower note unfortunately your not able actually fix them. Making them a lower note will sorta fix the issue to the best.
I just bought a kalimba and I’m super excited to use it!! I think it will fit in perfectly with my folk music kind of style that I play! Glad I watched this video!! :)
When something vibrates freely - you get that long "buzz" that goes on. If you touch it - it stops. So something must be touching it; preventing the vibration from continuing. Maybe you can bend it away from the base where it's touching too much?? - my 2 cents
Literally tabs are so frustrating bc actual, legit kalimba tabs are sideways sheet music which is confusing af, and all other “tabs” are literally just the notes in sequential order without rhythm. And even then you never know if it’s gonna be letter notes or numbers. I wish kalimba people just collectively agreed tabs were stupid and use the well established medium of sheet music instead. 😣😭
I don't look for tabs. I play the piano and i know how to read it and know the music dynamics. You can just play the kalimba on the treble clef and if something is lacking, just add a few notes from the bass clef.
I found your videos a little while back and was just mesmerized. So I started looking on Amazon and realized there not that expensive!!! This video helped me out a lot. So thank you 😊
Oh my gosh thank you so much! I was trying to watch on the train without headphones, realised automated subtitles were turned off and was sad. Then I realised you’ve put in subtitles yourself. ❤️❤️❤️ You’re a saviour! ❤️🥹❤️🥹
I think it's only thumb nails you need to grow out for a kalimba (chromatic kalimba being the exception), and guitars only need your fingers. There are exceptional times when you would use your thumb for chords, but that is for when you're on more advanced chords, so keep finger nails short and thumb nails long? If you're right handed, even, then it's only your left hand your need short fingernails for. 😊 I hope that helps, and happy to offer anymore advice 🙂
Thanks for this guide! I just ordered a Kalimba online (waiting for it to arrive now) and found this video upon researching "how to tune kalimba". I play string instruments for a hobby (not professional) and have basic knowledge on reading music sheet (note-reading). Tho my initial plan was to learn kalimba with music notes, I just learned (through this video) that it's also a necessity to learn how to read kalimba tabs. Something new to learn indeed!. I'm really fascinated on how kalimba sounds like and really wanting to learn how to play it

Thank you. 😉👍♥️
This was helpful. I've been ticking away with two kalimbas and didn't know what dead tines were. Now I have one for practice (with dead tines) and another that seems to be dead tine free (also for practice as I'm not very good yet). Thank you!

Thanks for this guide, i tried downloading the Kalimba thru an app for a phone and I think it's much better to practice on an actual Kalimba. For the notes, tabs or chords for Kalimba, I tried the bamboo flute notes, I think it could help others practicing the Kalimba.
I also cut my nails before buying my Kalimba, and I needed to wait for my nails to grow 😂😂
I broke one of my nails recently so i had to cut it totally and now I have to wait and can't do covers.. I tried to play but it sounded different when I recorded.. :(
Sam Salvador It is a torture when you want to play the Kalimba but you can’t :(
The notebook! I just received a gift of a very pretty one with sections so now I know exactly what I will be using it for! Thank you !
Thank you so much for this video and the info you’ve included. I’m just starting out with my kalimba and your video helps a lot! 👍 And I loved seeing some of the songs you have in your song journal!

I've thought about getting a Kalimba myself. Figured I'd look into what's involved a bit before I decide. Very informative video!
ah good to know the wooden ones are beginner friendly. i’ve been wanting a kalimba for a while and a bit ago i was out with my mother at a market and i saw a stall that was selling handmade decorations and they had a couple of wooden kalimbas with pretty floral designs carved into the fronts so my mother bought one for me for christmas
I wish that I know about that dead tines 😭, my first kalimba also have a dead tines
Sorry to hear that :( Its risky buying online due to stuff like that happening... So if you have some music stores around you, it's safer to buy your Kalimba there. I'm planning to do that on my next purchase :)
@@SamSalvador if there's a dead tine is there anything you can do about it??

@@1er1s on one of her videos she shares his to "fix" Dead tines which is to tune them a lower note unfortunately your not able actually fix them. Making them a lower note will sorta fix the issue to the best.

thank you for teaching me this it helped me a lot :D
Yay! I'm glad i could help ❤️☺️
Question: You spoke briefly on Dead Tines, but how would one revive them? Or is it just as simple as buying new ones?
A hammer 🔨 comes with it! 🙃
@@dunnnuu6502
Do you fix the tines, or murder them?
@@eyesofthecervino3366 i dunno much about kalimbas but i saw someone gently hitting the edge of the tines with a hammer
When something vibrates freely - you get that long "buzz" that goes on. If you touch it - it stops. So something must be touching it; preventing the vibration from continuing. Maybe you can bend it away from the base where it's touching too much?? - my 2 cents
Wiggle the tine around until the tine fixes itself
The calimba sounds so pretty. The acrylic is pretty, and the wood is pretty. Thank you.

I was trying to find Undertale ukulele tabs but there wasn't any QwQ
I've had no trouble finding tabs. What I want is SHEET MUSIC.
Most of the tabs I find for the songs I want to play are advanced tabs. I just want an easy version y'know? I only got this thing at christmas. 😭
So thank you 😊

when you want to learn how to play guitar AND kalimba : 👁👄👁
I think it's only thumb nails you need to grow out for a kalimba (chromatic kalimba being the exception), and guitars only need your fingers. There are exceptional times when you would use your thumb for chords, but that is for when you're on more advanced chords, so keep finger nails short and thumb nails long? If you're right handed, even, then it's only your left hand your need short fingernails for. 😊 I hope that helps, and happy to offer anymore advice 🙂

Me, a pianist who's buying a kailmba: 😭
Thanks for this guide! I just ordered a Kalimba online (waiting for it to arrive now) and found this video upon researching "how to tune kalimba". I play string instruments for a hobby (not professional) and have basic knowledge on reading music sheet (note-reading). Tho my initial plan was to learn kalimba with music notes, I just learned (through this video) that it's also a necessity to learn how to read kalimba tabs. Something new to learn indeed!. I'm really fascinated on how kalimba sounds like and really wanting to learn how to play it
