  • I review this 2023 Chevy 3500 HD 6.6L Duramax Diesel (L5P) for a MAX TOWING Test. I load 20,000lbs on concrete behind this Chevy 3500 pick up truck and run it down the highway over the Appalachian Mountains to see if this Duramax Diesel has enough power to tow this heavy trailer.

    This weekend I had the pleasure of testing this brand new 2023 Chevy 3500 HD Duramax Diesel engine and strapping its max towing capacity behind it and seeing how this Duramax handles the heavy load. r
    I go over the engine specs like how this Duramax engine makes 445HP and 910 pound feet of torque which is wild.
    Next I talk about the different towing specs for the 3500 platform. technically the 3500's are rated for 36,000lbs but that is only a specific configuration of truck. the truck I had had a MAX towing ability of 20,000lbs and so I loaded up 20,000lbs of concrete on my trailer and towed it down the highway
    I was surprised how easily this diesel engine towed the weight once it got to cruising speed. it just goes to show how well these diesel engines are towing heavy stuff.
    went going down hills I got to see the Chevy exhaust brake working very well as well as the engine downshifting to slow the truck down. I didn't have to hit the brakes once.
    on the way up the big slopes this Duramax had plenty of power to keep up cruising speed. in fact we didn't lose any speed at all. the truck worked very well and there is plenty of power out of this Duramax diesel engine when towing a heavy trailer.
    Overall I was very impressed how easily this Duramax diesel towed it's max trailer weight on some pretty steep hills.
    I can't wait to get other trucks and engine on the same route to compare them to the Duramax!

    As a mechanic myself (retired) your channel is rapidly becoming my favorite. You are going to give TFL a run for the money.
    I own that truck a 2021 3500 L5P and tow a 12,000 pound fifth wheel RV with it.
    Thanks again for what you do. It is nice to have an actual mechanic doing these reviews unlike TFL where Andre and Roman pointed to the rack and pinion steering on a Dodge 1/2 ton truck and said here is the four wheel drive. None of that BS here.
    Thanks much.

      Thank you Jim! Means alot. I still get lots of stuff wrong but I feel like I can tell a rack and pinion from a front Diff lol I imagine your 3500 pulls that camper without an issue. I was happily surprised how well the L5P performed, I honestly thought it would bog down a lot more then it did.

      @@TheGettyAdventures One thing to keep in mind is that in theory lets say a tall fifth wheel holiday trailer for example is going to pull a fair bit harder for the same given weight as your loaded trailer simply because of wind resistance. That difference would become more and more prominent as one drives faster or if there is a head wind. Of course with this loaded flat deck trailer it will show how well each truck you test does against its rivals with this same style of load and wind resistance.

    I’m in my late 50’s. Like many others , I grew up on a large cattle and sheep ranch. I started driving when I was about 10, my dad said I’ll have you driving as soon as you can reach the brakes, clutch and drive safely on our property. We had about 13000 acres in the Sacramento mountain of New Mexico. Anyway we had pickup trucks still operating: 1946 Ford 1.25 ton with flat head V-8, a Dodge 3/4 from 1963, a 1965 Chevy 1/2 ton, a 1968 Ford F-250, a 1979 Ford F-350 crew cab and a 1983 Ford F-150. I left for the Navy in 88 and ended up with my own construction company in Ohio (long story).
    Anyway every rancher and farmer in the 1930’s -1980’s absolutely ignored the “max towing” certification of the pickups they owned. My Dad always added lead spring overload kits to our 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks. We pulled 2, 4, 6 horse conventional trailers. All our pickups had “side boards”. For those of you not familiar side boards were just steel panels with a swing gate that made the bed of the pickup capable of carrying two grown horses.
    I’ve pulled the 3/4 ton single rear wheel pickup with two horses on the trailer and 4 full size bulls or 6 full size cows on the trailer. Figure on the side boards weighing 300 lbs + 2000 lbs for horses in the pickup bed + 4000 lbs for the steel 6 horse trailer, + 4 bulls weigh in at (1800x4= 7200). This made the total load be approx 14,000 -15,000 lbs. Now, there would be additional weight in the truck. 2 saddles, and gear 150 lbs, the fuel tanks (2x20 gallons = 250lbs) and then our sideboard had two 45 gallon propane tanks running horizontally at (90x 4.25= 382 lbs) and then two adult cowboys at 350 lbs. basically often carried near 15,000, 16,000 lbs…….
    These trucks did what we asked. But if we compare today’s pickups…… truly the differences are almost unbelievable! I’ve pulled 15000 lbs with a 2013 F-150. The pickup had more pawed a brakes than the 1979 F-350! The reason I’d never pull that load on the highway with out 1/2 ton is liability. Can the 1/2 ton with airbags pull 15,000lbs safely? Well, yes I can argue that the current F-150 with 3.5 or 2.7 ecoboost with air bags and a properly loaded trailer would pull the trailer far far safer than the 1979, or any 3/4-1-ton pickup made before the mid 1990s.
    But we live in a litigious society. If I were in an accident overloaded by “regulation”, it really doesn’t matter if I was not at fault, the lawyers would have a field day.

    Long time Duramax owner here. 20 years 4 trucks. I put over 300K on each one before selling. I currently have an 08 LMM 2500HD that I am sinking a lot of money into instead of buying a new 95K truck. Currently has 430K on the odometer but I had the engine built two months ago and upgraded to hold 1000hp. Transmission as well. I will never tune it past 600hp though. I prefer reliability over speed or gear crunching. Transfer case is new. (last year) The rear differential may be my next upgrade. I tow up to 13,000 a few times a month for business but mostly I tow in the 6,000 lb range with a slide in camper on the back. (motel room) So at 17,000lb. gross I get around 12 MPG at 70 MPH unless I have head winds hitting the high profile camper and trailer. The best upgrade was installing a 52 gallon Titan poly fuel tank under it. I hate stopping for fuel !

    As a trucker you should put the blocks tight together in the centre with no space in them. If you get a wobble happening they can move they way you have them. Or place blocks between so they cant move inward towards each other. Be safe out there, great review. Love my L5P.

    Alex, I think your channel is quickly becoming my new favorite truck channel on RUclips! Great work!!
    One thing maybe worth mentioning, is that in 2023 (for 2024 model year) GM updated their HD trucks including the Duramax, with improved hp and torque numbers, supposedly stronger internals, a new turbo and supposedly a much stronger exhaust brake, and higher towing numbers. It'd be fun hearing you talk about the updated engine and your take on that, as well as maybe at some point testing the new updated L5P with a heavier load.
    I also love that you tested the towing with the cruise control on! I have no doubt that the Cummins exhaust brake is still stronger, but I'm curious to see how the updated one does in the Duramax, since people have said that the current Duramax's exhuast brake is completely useless.
    Again -great work!!!

    • @TheGettyAdventures

      I will agree the exhaust brake could really only be felt at like 2500 RPM. the cummins exhaust brake can be felt much harder forsure!
      I am excited to review the 2024 Duramax it seems like the GM felt they needed more power and I can't blame them with ford droping like 1200 lb-ft of torque out of the powerstroke.

    Alex, great video, looking forward to the other towing reviews! One note on the "towing gear", that doesn't make sense in 8 and 10 speed transmissions. Instead of pulling that large hill in (say) 6th gear you'd be towing it at the same RPMs in 7th with a "towing gear". Rear axle gear ratio means nothing by itself, the final gear ratios available is what matters. A deeper rear axle ratio just means you can start from a dead stop a little easier, but once you're moving the transmission does all the work so it's completely pointless to have a deeper rear axle ratio. These aren't are grand dads 3 speeds anymore where you only have 3 final gear ratios to choose from and they all need to be low.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Год назад

      Agreed John! I think having the 10 speed allows for lowers gearings but I guess my point would be for someone who was really towing heavy or planning on it. having 3.73 gears on top of the 10 speed would just add even more pull in comparison to a 10 speed with 3.42's. Either way GM probably has much smaller people working on these drivelines then me so I assume they know exactly what they are doing!

    I agree that undersquare is better for a few reasons but in terms of making torque its actually not as simple as longer stroke = more leverage. The other equation to keep in mind is wider bore = more force on the lever. You need both force and leverage to make torque so in theory, engines of the same size, one slightly over and one slightly under square should make similar torque.
    Undersquare does however improve the thermal efficiency of the engine since the area available for heat rejection near TDC is reduced. Worth mentioning though that a larger bore can fit larger intake/exhaust area and that has some efficiency (more so power making) benefits as well. There are all kinds of tradeoffs. Off course rod/stroke length can affect the side load on the piston as well as the piston max velocity and dwell time at TDC.

It seems like your front end was a bit light. On my 17 I had a ranch hand bumper and a 18k winch and my front axle was always 5600 lbs and with my 5er hooked up my rear axle weight was between 7000 and 7500 which is why I went to a dually. On my 2023 my front end is right at 5200 empty and the rear about 3800 with me in the truck. I would really like to see someone test the L5P with a Banks Derringer and I dash, oh and yes my truck has them and I like the extra 80 hp and 144 trq at the rear wheels.

    I'm not expert on gearing, but I don't see how having 3.42 gears would ever be a bad thing when you have so many gears to choose from and also considering the fact that these trucks make peak torque so low in the rev-range. With 3.42 gears you get better fuel economy while towing at highway speeds and if more power is ever needed while towing the truck simply downshifts. The 10-speed gearbox seems to provide a lot of flexibility insofar as towing and fuel economy is concerned.

      @jimm2442 Год назад +2

      I am only one voice but I did spend my working career as a mechanic. I know you want Getty's opinion but I will also offer mine. If you are going to "short trip the truck", 1-10 miles for commuting or grocery stores etc. then stick with gas. The modern diesels need to work in order to keep the emission components clean and working properly. When you start towing more often and working the truck like it was designed for, then go diesel. The $10 to 12 k more you spend for the diesel will pay back at resale time.

      @TheGettyAdventures  Год назад +1

      Hi Jordan. Jim is completely correct. In terms of strictly towing the Diesel is a much better option, but in terms of actually owning an HD truck for years if you are not going to be driving the diesel 20-30 miles a day at least you'll likely end up with emission related issues which are NOT cheap to fix. The Gas trucks although not as powerful and will not tow as well, do really get the job done just fine. Obviously if your camper is north of like 14,000lb then you may not have a choice but if you are under 12,000lbs a gas HD truck of any brand would tow that just fine.

      Don't know about Canada. In 2008, the US EPA "mandated" Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) for all diesel trucks 3/4 ton or larger. DEF is used in selective catalytic reduction (SRC) systems to reduce the pollutants in diesel exhaust. I believe that it was required in 2010.

      @@kylebutler7142 yes but both GM and Ram has moved away from the CP4. GM went to a Denso pump in 2017 and Ram went back to a CP3 in i think 2021. There are huge lawsuits regarding the CP4, and it keeps grenading in Fords as we speak. Supposedly Ford literally can't move to another pump, because the current 6.7 Powerstroke was designed for the CP4 and another pump won't fit... from what I've heard. So in my book that just cancels out the Ford - I wouldn't even consider buying one.

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 Год назад +2

      @@ohaggdah Actually there is a replacement pump for the CP4 on the ford 6.7, I believe its on the market now although I imagine the demand for it will be insane, its a pump design that Stanadyne I believe has had out for years in other applications and S&S Diesel Performance is collaborating together and have kits out to replace that CP4. They made the announcement perhaps a month ago that it was about to hit the market as they have been working on it for some time. I have no idea what the price tag would be but if it all pans out well there is that option of making the ford more reliable. My understanding is that the ford using the CP4 was far better than the prior Duramax that used the same pump as GM had no electric assist pump like the Ford does, so the GM had some major issues for sure.
