Yeah it’s a night and day difference. My 09 ram is way more aggressive in slowing you down then my friends brand new f-550 mason dump. The Ford one is pretty much useless.
Yep, my son says it sucks being behind me because I let off the throttle and the exhaust brake kicks in I'm really slowing down quickly (12 Ram 2500, 6.7 Cummins, G56 and 3.73 gears).
You should make a spreadsheet with all the tow rigs you've pulled that hill with and what the results were. The brands, year, setup, load weight etc. It would be really cool to see all of the driving tests you've completed put all together.
That's great that the 3500 does that. But your 5500 is engineered to do that every day for the next 500k miles. First the frame, suspension, axle's and everything is heavier. Then the engine is tuned for tq/hp to be the max for it's design and materials. Say they used a baseline of 500k miles. You could tune that engine for 30% more hp/tq, but it's going to run like that for 50% fewer miles. The 3500 is aimed at non-professionals, and to compete with Ford and GM for homeowners/campers. They had to make bigger numbers to compete in that market. But when hp/tq numbers go up, with the same displacement, longevity goes down. There is an old saying, 'there is no replacement for displacement'! LOL Same with the L6 vs V8. The V8's going to rev higher and have a wider power band. But there is a price to pay for that, they do that for 50% fewer miles than an L6, and usually have more problems doing it. The L6 design can last for 1M miles plus, w/no major issues! JMHO 8) --gary
Actually the commercial 450/550/4500/5500 motors are detuned to lower ratings for longevity and perform worse in towing comparisons in the same weight range. This is due to their increased bulk on suspension, axles, brakes, and frame combined with their lower power ratings. The truck in this video in about the max performance you will get stock for the light to medium duty range.
Well done test Sam! No doubt those H.O.s are towing beasts. They will last a long time too because compression ratio is lower and they have egt's in check to keep it safe.

I wasn't a fan of those mirrors until I bought my new 2024 HO 3500 DRW. Got use to them right away and man, they sure do look pretty at night time... Great video by the way.!
I'm on my 3rd ram and I now know for a fact these rams hold back on power for a set # of miles. I thought this was the case with my 15 but with my 21, I payed attention. At about 600mi I pulled my 20k toy hauler with 3500 HO. First time I pulled Eisenhower, I was not impressed with the power pulling the mountain as I was doing approx. 47mph. After 5k miles or so miles I pulled the mountain again around 50-51 mph on avg. After about 10k miles, the truck pulls the mountain at about 56 mph on avg so the truck has become more powerful as it breaks in.
What a beautiful truck man unbelievable the torque in the power they have that new Ford high output Powerstroke is pretty impressive I just don’t think i could step away from the Ram and the Cummins engines they have always been super reliable trucks
The good thing about turning more RPMS is it keeps the bearings in the engine alive a lot longer. If you are making the same power at 3000 rpms as 1500RPMs the bearings have half the stress since it's doing the work at twice the RPM. That is why all the sled pulling guys won't lug one down below 4,000 rpms and like to be closer to 5,000. Heaviest I have been with my H.O Ram Cummins is 18,500 with a Yanmar VIO55 on a 30ft gooseneck and it was just cruising. I normally tow a 33ft RV that I have never weighed and the wind resistance on that thing is crazy.
Nice to see what these trucks are used for . If drivers don't used it like you do ur truck just cruising around town they will always have issues with emissions and they complain about their trucks. Cummins engine exhuast brake is bread and butter for these trucks. All big 3 trucks have plenty of power, but only the Cummins has best exhuast brakes. We have all 3 in our fleet but Cummins hands down best exhuast brake and never usually smell brake pads and shoes at bottom of hill.

Your 5500 truck weights 2k more then the 3500. Just look under there skirts and that's where you find the difference. The 5500 frame is double the thickness of the 3500. With stronger components attached. 1 test we all hope we dont have to do is emergency lane change because of the old van that pulled out right in front of you. It happens and when it does you'll be glad your in a 5500. Both great truck's 👍
If you use Cruise Control down the hill, the truck then knows what your target speed is and will apply more or less exhaust braking to hold you to that speed. That might work better than just lifting off the gas and letting it coast with it not knowing what speed you intend to be at.
With a modded valve body the torque converter wilstay in lockup and I believe there is a place in coneticout or East Coast that can tune the ecu to keep the converter locked in without a valve body or tuning I am running mm3 smarty on my ram it's easily capable of over 650 rwhp. I would never try towing with this tune it would likely result in some failure trans or otherwise when towing always keep your tune under 100 added horsepower or have gauges to monitor all your egts boost pressure trans temp exc.
I would like to hook up with you at some point sam on a more personnel bases share info between us I'm thinking about a trans swap I don't think the old 48re is really up to the long haul challenge of this much weight continually. Thoughts.
Regarding the regional favorites, I've noticed that too. In South Carolina, we're largely Chevy with some Ford's thrown in, but few Dodges. In Arkansas they're big into Dodge.
In just bought a 2024 ram 3500 6.7 h.o. 3.73 gears. I will pull a 20,000 pound 5th wheel with it have not done it yet but when the weather gets nice i will. Been pulling it with f350 2006 6.0 4.30 gears with allot of after market work on it to make it a pulling rig. But thought it was time to get a bigger engine to pull. Wanted 4.10 gears but wasn't able to find the setup i wanted with. Did find out i can put 4.10 in later but it will cost 5 to 6,000 to do it so i am hoping the 3.73 will do the job.
I thought to get the max 37k rating it had to be the single cab short bed?…

Hey, it's a Brit here. I'd like to understand this maximum towing load race between the light truck manufacturers. When you have semi trailer rigs for loads over, say 15,000lbs, why do so many users want to tow, 35, 37. 40k lbs behind a pickup? Is it trying to save money/get more use from your only vehicle, or is it a macho thing - "GM all noo for 2026, HD 3500 tows 88,000lbs" Are you on.proper air brakes for these big loads. Thanks

I really appreciate all the specs and analytics you provide throughout your commentation. But do you happen to recall what the axle ratio is on this truck? I like bearing that in mind when observing the final gear, RPM / speed relationships.
I will stick with my GMC until RAM puts a 10-speed transmission in their trucks. I have owned several Cummins engines in my trucks, and they are the best for engine braking, bar none. However, I'm not too fond of the constant shifting going uphill and downhill on these RAMS. Good job on the video, sir.
@@VBELTandSON I went back and found it, thank you. Your videos certainly have a honest feel and approach to them. I live in the north Texas area, it’s great seeing some good solid Americans out there! Have you driven a 2022 or 2023 Ford high output with thier 1200 ft pounds of torque? I am about to trade my Raptor in on a HD truck to tow an RV. I will be daily driving it 95% of the time to work (I am a custom home builder). We will be towing the RV +/- 20,000 pounds, I do love the power of the Ford but see 100% your perspective with the Engine Brake issue. We drove through the Smoky Mountains going through Tennessee while going to North Carolina to pick up a duck hunting boat for my son. You live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country! Thank you for the reply before and any input you have is valued. My son loves the Mega Cab 2023 Ram’s SRW partly because they are way more comfortable when he is riding back there 😂, partly because he loves his RAM also, we are a divided family 😏.
Sam, have you ever towed with the High Ouput 3500 dually with the 3.73 rear? It has a lower tow capacity. 32klb and change. I’m towing around 24k with mulcher and trailer weight. Wondering if that 3.73 would be adequate.
Hello, tell me, please, I own this truck for 1 week, a gusnek trailer, the mount is the same as yours. Without a trailer, the car goes smoothly, but when I hook the trailer, any irregularities on the road are felt very strongly. The feeling would be driving on a washing board. I let some air out of the tires, the car began to go softer, but not much. Could you share information about tire pressure? Do you have airbags working? Can you tell me your theory about the shaking, please?
@VBELTandSON Win Lose, like Love Hate Pro Con. But if you can turn Lose to Win and so on, then that's where we get Win Win 🙂 If tuning, for Emissions Legal of course, and an updated lubrication technology...then is it still "stock" as you perceive? Both are removable, but yours for the Win Win while it's in your operation. And yes, I'm pretty certain you're not using most updated lubrication technology for the truck or any of your equipment. If you were, you'd be raving about it and mentioning it at any power or efficiency topic opportunity, which was in this video.
Great test and video! Looking to upgrade from my 15, 6.4 gaser to a 3500 dually to pull a 40' enclosed race trailer. 14k gross. I want the Ram Exhaust brake! Going dually not for the weight but for stability towing such a large box in all weather conditions. Plan on towing 2-3 times a week. What are your thoughts on the dually vs a SRW?
Big difference get the dually they are typically cheaper also from the base tradesmen all the way to a limited the SRW are always like 5 to 7K more than the duallys.
The 2020 f350 you hauled with most likely had 3.55s, if you want to mash against a ford you need 4.10s in the f350 or the f450 with 4.30s. My f450 hauls just like the ram you tested, i feel i could haul atleast 45k or more as well with it . good looking ram tough is that truck leveled? Looks sweet. keep up the good content!
@VBELTandSON would live to, but I'm in NC. I found on my f450 to make it work you need to let it Rev about 2800-3200 rpms and it works, I can go down an 6 mile 6% grade and not hit my brakes. But if you are going over 30mph it won't work good and you will have to ride the brakes some. I must say, going from a ram to a GM, or ford takes several thousand miles to get used to but you will learn it and love it. I like all three and honestly can't say which is my favorite. If i had to choose currently its the f450, but the new L5p looks pretty good. Just wondering how it can tow 36k with 3.42 axle and specs on the trans are not as good as the fords on paper. But gm seems to always do better them what the paper reads. My old lml dmax would out tow any ford of that year. I Want to test the new l5p. Maybe I can make a video on my 22 f450 pickup towing my excavator. Cat 310 on an 40k trailer.
Lol, a large exhaust brake. Ram would officially be hung out to dry if they upgraded that easy button. Minus longevity, the oval high output has it in the bag with that krackin’ of a 10 speed. What’s the first thing a large exhaust brake takes out though….ford probably knows exactly what those parts are. They have a charged intercooler, no way they don’t know.

Thoughts.
Thanks for the video Sam well done 👍❤❤. Take care of yourself and family and be Blessed ❤️❤️.
@USER-NAME_VBELTandSON I think not scammer.
Regarding the regional favorites, I've noticed that too. In South Carolina, we're largely Chevy with some Ford's thrown in, but few Dodges. In Arkansas they're big into Dodge.
Test drove a 2019 HO 3500, it was awesome. I would love that setup with a wide track front axle.
Thanks Ryan. Awesome truck. 👍🏻
Ram is the best ingine brake

Damn that's a bad ass truck
I thought to get the max 37k rating it had to be the single cab short bed?…
I think he’s combining the truck weight, trailer and his load. I’ve always known when you tow you just saw the weight of the trailer and what you are hauling but I could be completely wrong as well.
He is not considering it is not the base model. There’s another comment on here where he acknowledges it.
I wish we could go back to the days of driving trucks with full weight loss programs…I hear they preform so much better.
Que chulada de motor se escucha una melodía que belleza nunca le quiten el ruido al motor que es lo que le da el sabor a estás bebé hermosas las mejores Camionetas 3500
I just got this exact same truck color and all. I am gonna try and do Hotshot loads. Thankfully I live in an area with good freight
Hey, it's a Brit here. I'd like to understand this maximum towing load race between the light truck manufacturers.
When you have semi trailer rigs for loads over, say 15,000lbs, why do so many users want to tow, 35, 37. 40k lbs behind a pickup? Is it trying to save money/get more use from your only vehicle, or is it a macho thing - "GM all noo for 2026, HD 3500 tows 88,000lbs"
Are you on.proper air brakes for these big loads.
Thanks
Thanks Ryan for sharing . Sam great video. Here in central Texas you see more GMs towing heavy than the others Ram is second then Ford.
Got a '22 h.o 22k miles and flattened the lifters..been in the shop for a month and still no word when they will have parts..bummed cause it's a $100k dream truck. But the exhaust break is awesome.
Jus22h I had hydraulic issues liftrers
Check out PDI Paul. He’s gotten rid of all the ‘22’s in his fleet for that exact reason. Don’t buy a ‘22!
That front end seems like it needed an alignment. Steering was hard right the whole time.
Great video. Nice truck.
@@KLHobbies99 leveling hit was just added
That is the nicest looking truck iv seen in a long time. I do think the rams exhaust brakes are better then chevy and ford
Hands down ram crushes the others.
I’ve got a 3500 chassis cab coming. Can’t wait for it even if it’s detuned
I'm actually looking at buying one because of it. Better mileage and aisin tranny.
@@bunsguns8222 I absolutely love it, very happy with the purchase. Been hauling with it since the second day I took delivery of it. Comfortable empty (has cm skirted flatbed) and hauls our 46’ horse trailer with ease (around 23k loaded). Hauling the big horse trailer on freeway, 10-11mpg
Empty freeway 16mpg. Empty city 13mpg.
love the truck hate the mirrors idk how many times ive almost swapped mirrors with other trucks on the back road two lanes
You can turn hillstart off in the settings.
I need to do that. Was cool at first
So the Laramie limited in that cab/bed spec is 37k or is that the 2wd Reg cab work truck?
Highway 20 grade is the test! badass rig and test!!!!! Own a few rams the engine brake is the best
Thank you!
Yes, That is a mighty fine looking Truck. I tried to find the north Lake forestry channel, but it won’t work
Instagram
I'm hearing that FCA is coming out with a new 8 speed medium duty transmission for their 3500
Very nice truck! Nice video Sam! Stay Safe!!!
Pretty sweet rig
Great test sam i haul hay in my old school ram 2500 cummins qaud 48re 4 x 4 and yes i haul heavy 35k 40k consistantly am running a newly biult 48re. Triple disc comverter lickip in all three gears above 1rst. Avrg about 6 mpg not surprised pulling this liad down the road at 60 65 in third lickup 3.73 gears and i know 35" tires are kinda tall. But it does ok condidering the teailer brakes are oversize for the trailer helps the braking no jake on this one been thinking about going old school cable acuated jake instead of electronic . Defanatly got the compression to do it. But id really like to get a day can class eight to keep this pickup on the road for a lot linger than pulling like this will.👌🤠
Nice tow test, love the exhaust brakes. Those mirrors are small! Is the steering wheel off center?
it’s honestly scary that pick ups can tow this much weight now. the thought that some joe blow that’s never really towed before can go buy a new truck pass a cdl test and tow that much weight behind a pick up truck is somewhat scary to me.
Agree, though he said a CDL was required.
@@eastbaystreet1242 cdl is required (at least in Ny where i live it’s required when the combined gvw is over 26k) but the fact that people don’t always follow “laws” is what scares me some guys got a new dually and his buddy says he bought something and it’s 30k pounds and he says oh don’t worry my truck can tow it that’s what is scary to me or these kids now that want to be super truckers with 0 experience
Atleast the majority of people with cdl's take driving seriously. Because that's usually how they make their living.
I have a 2011 Ram hemi. It’s not a diesel, but it’s a work horse with 200K miles. Not in the shop once
I do miss my 22 engine brake! Defiantly better than my 20!
I really appreciate all the specs and analytics you provide throughout your commentation.
But do you happen to recall what the axle ratio is on this truck?
I like bearing that in mind when observing the final gear, RPM / speed relationships.
@@entertainmenttruelove3275 410. Final gear 70mph at 2,000 rpm
Hill assist has a shutoff in your settings on the big screen.
Kitt
Those black wheels would look good on the 04. They’re nice wheels
Nice truck but for a 2023 why is the steering wheel already crooked when going straight?
Leveling kit and aftermarket track bar needs adjusted
Love the hood, hate the mirrors, love the video. That simple😅
I heard you mention doing this in a new Ford. I didn’t see that video on your channel. That Ram looks good.
The ford test was in 2020 sometime
I just wished that Dodge would of offered a 8 speed manual now that would be the big dog on the block !!!
Sam, have you ever towed with the High Ouput 3500 dually with the 3.73 rear? It has a lower tow capacity. 32klb and change. I’m towing around 24k with mulcher and trailer weight. Wondering if that 3.73 would be adequate.
It’s barely squatting!! That’s a great truck
Dang that a slick looking truck 🤘🏽🇺🇸
max tow awesome
test drive 2022 chevy won't be disappointed 10speed pulls like champ
Hello, tell me, please, I own this truck for 1 week, a gusnek trailer, the mount is the same as yours. Without a trailer, the car goes smoothly, but when I hook the trailer, any irregularities on the road are felt very strongly. The feeling would be driving on a washing board. I let some air out of the tires, the car began to go softer, but not much. Could you share information about tire pressure? Do you have airbags working? Can you tell me your theory about the shaking, please?
The max towing for that is 34,460 lbs if it’s 4x2. 37000 lbs would be for a regular cab with 4x2.
Truck identification card said useless 2x4 for this video.
@@VBELTandSON amazing overall video though 👍 just can’t haul 37,000lbs.
37k probably for a 2wd long box regular cab
Very easy way to make up for the 19.5 setup and ease that 37k load stress on the engine and trans hauling the hills. Two ways even.
But you're not asking how?
@AllAutos couldn’t tell you were offering info. But I wanted a stock truck for the video 19.5s for the win tho
@VBELTandSON Win Lose, like Love Hate Pro Con. But if you can turn Lose to Win and so on, then that's where we get Win Win 🙂
If tuning, for Emissions Legal of course, and an updated lubrication technology...then is it still "stock" as you perceive? Both are removable, but yours for the Win Win while it's in your operation.
And yes, I'm pretty certain you're not using most updated lubrication technology for the truck or any of your equipment. If you were, you'd be raving about it and mentioning it at any power or efficiency topic opportunity, which was in this video.
I haven’t watched your channel before. Would comment in more detail on the HO Cummins and the “regular” Cummins?
Less hp with the standard one and the weak trans on 2500 trucks.
Great video, I came here to comment about the Karen comment at the very beginning. The video was good enough to change my mind. 😊😊
Bring me that 450 haha I fricken loved the fords power and 10 speed. I’d own one rn if the engine brake was as good as the Cummins.
Fords still have cp4s they will never learn. That’s why you don’t see ten year old Fords still in use. They make em disposable not dependable.
i didnt like the mirrors on the 2023 ram 2500 i test drove. i felt it was like looking down a hallway too, got a new 2022 instead with a cummins of course
Beast 💪🏻💪🏻👍👍
How did get that max tow light to turn on? I have a 22 3500 with max tow
Of course new trucks are a thing of beauty, but in 5 years what will be left of the Ram towing at max if it did that every day and it was your truck?
Still going strong.
Nice truck
Question Sir I live in Southern CA and I have a 2nd Gen 12 valve. Anyways going to do the KDP fix. Do I go with the 180 degree thermostat 94/98 1/2. Or do like a lot of forums 24 valve 190 degree? Thxs!
Most ppl that dont tow don't realize you can't pull 37 k uphill running 65
I’m a long time Ram Cummins owner and fan. How do you guys like the new tow mirrors?
I own both trucks and the new mirrors are way better.
