I think we all feel that if we were given the chance to come into a large sum of money from the Lottery we all would do it smarter and that is a 50/50 chance. Winning the lottery one would be better off accepting an annuity (I know some disagree) but with an annuity you have less chance of going through all of your money fast. I think I read or maybe even watched a show where they suggested that you set aside a set of amount and blow through it to get passed the winning the large amount of money. Once you have blow through the set amount you make sure the rest is used frugally. If you are single spend it, unless you feel compelled to give to charity and if you have a family take care of them. enjoy your winnings and every good thing you can enjoy with it. Once you die all of your material things will be divided up by everyone else, family maybe friends or just anyone that would want it or it gets throw away. Keep your winnings to yourself the less anyone knows the better off you will be.

It seems many simply fail to plan, thinking the money will last forever. Here's my list of top priorities for expenditures if i ever came into serious money: 1) Take care of parents (even if it means moving them into my home, 2) Buy a modest home large enough for self and parents, 3) See some of the world (outside the US) and off the beaten path, 4) Establish a trust fund for grandchildren's college ONLY, 5) Give something to those who are in need, 6) Establish a burial fund, 7) Establish a rainy day fund, 8) Give gifts to family & friends. Oh, and before ANYTHING ELSE pay off all outstanding debts because the day after winning you could die and in my religion dying with debts is verboten. On the other hand, lottery winnings are considered to be ill gotten gains and so cannot be used to satisfied debts and which is a whole other subject.

I don’t understand how they can give up 50% of their lottery winnings to an illegal illegal tax. The IRS is not a United States entity it’s unconstitutional.

Anyone expecting to get some money whether they are an athlete or playing the poor man's investment program, should understand finance. Learn about trust, llc's, and holding companies. Sometimes, those that get rich should hope that they don't. You either understand Finance or you don't. No excuses about never being taught, the information is free and it's in what they call books and videos

Winning the lottery puts a person into a group that can be characterized as the financially irresponsible. Because of the astronomical odds of ever winning, and the sometimes daily output of their income in playing the lottery. So it's not surprising that the very few that win cannot handle money.

I found that interest bearing accounts are rare no matter what the bank tells you, I’ve had an account with a bank for years and all tgd paperwork talks about interest, I finally got tired of never seeing any interest and opened a savings account with a credit union, with them I actually do get monthly interest on the amount in the account so I will be moving all my money to them in the future
