- Panasonic S9 is a dumbed down version of the S5 II, because Panasonic sees content creators as imbeciles who can't feed themselves. 15 limit in 2024? 20 minutes in HD? Their obsession with size and still couldn't match the weight of the superior Sony ZVE1. 26mm f8? Was that an May fools joke? Nikon has a 28mm and 26mm f2.8 that are barely heavier with surprising 3D pop with low element vintage glass. Panasonic's lens can't even take a lens cap, let alone a filter. And it's manual focus with 8 Tonies. And why are we doing an 18-40mm f4.5-5.6 when you have a 20-60mm f3.5-5.6? Travel back in time Panasonic, scratch those projects and work on something useful.

It's a pack in free lens for the launch. Body cap pancakes are insanely cheap/simple to make, it's a marketing thing.
Panasonic has recognized the market that everyone else has missed. The need for a blue, green, red or black FF interchangeable lens mirrorless camera that does not have a viewfinder.

@@Just-Nico Some of the reviewers tested it and it can run much longer than these limits. In 4K it can do 90+ minutes before overheating in normal "talking head" scenario. In HD it probably never overheats.
My even smaller GX85 (from 2016!) can do 4K30 or 1080p60 for unlimited time. Most I've done was 1080p for 4 hours in one recording and no signs of overheating.
I have serious doubts that 8 years newer camera of similar size (with much more efficient hardware) couldn't do more than 20 minutes.
@@Just-Nico BS. If you take out the recording limit, you can at least try to cool it with a fan, or if you're in a "cool" area.
A hardcoded recording limit is just stupid and has no place in 2024 on a new camera.

The only reason this camera is so expensive is because they need to pay for those trips to Osaka.
Most camera especially the more compact one are overpriced toy for the eccentric though. For youtubers they should just go with much cheaper package like pocked 3 and for most people phone is enough.

Yeah this camera will have a massive price drop in a couple months, it's definitely over priced. The average users would rather use a cheaper phone, any Osmo/go pro/insta products would suffice and cheaper also. Also the fact that you still need to buy a lens for it which makes it more expensive.
@@sentisenti3229 I got the Pocket 3 and it's the perfect companion for my bulky R5 + fast glass. When I need something smaller and less intrusive, something with great stabilization I use the Pocket 3. It also helps it doesn't have the too ultra wide action camera focal length.
@@roscosart1888, they are basically marketing towards Apple users who are fooled by the price tag. They think it's high price point automatically means it superior. Then there is the another end of the spectrum where vloggers upgraded to cinema cameras and complain about it not having hybrid-camera features. For instance, vloogers "upgrading" to the FX30 who clearly didn't take the time to see the emphasis on "cinema line" so they assumed it was just a "better" Alpha A6000 series camera. Vloggers want a quick-fix solution and the path of least resistance which is perfectly understandable but at least take the time to do some research before making a ignorant purchase on Amazon.
The worst part about all of this is these youtubers not calling out this blasphemy of a camera

It's like the Olympus 15mm f/8 "body cap" lense of old - so useless, you might as well just drill a pinhole into a 2-buck actual body cap and be done with it.
I dearly love pancakes, and wish the Z-mount had one (I don't count the 26mm as pancake because it's an extending design), but this is just a bad joke on an entirely different level. And for $200 ??? Yeah, that's gonna sell like gangbusters. :D

All camera companies are guilty of this nowadays, bottom line is they will sell enough units to break even at worst. 30-40 years ago in the era of film people who wanted to get into photography took advice from retail professionals or the advice of friends or from print media which came about through practical application or testing. These days fan boy reviews made in a few minutes as a reward for a foreign junket are enough to sell 50k units to people who don't know any better.
Retail professionals? You mean the guys that get paid incentives from manufacturers? Or the store owners that get trips paid for manufacturers based on sales targets. Most that don’t use cameras they sell.
Or print mags that went to the same launch events and trade shows that have always happened.
There is actually less money thrown around now than there was in the 2000s. The only thing that has changed is the format that people digest their content.

Very disappointed in this camera. As a long time Lumix user, this camera is everything that I liked that Lumix DIDN'T DO. If if had been a small camera announced and released alongside a more competitive and innovative camera it'd be fine but they're marketing this thing as if its some revolution, despite it being a worse value than cameras they released 5 -7 years ago. This is probably the first time I am genuinely questioning my investment in Lumix if this is where they are going.

A great honest video as I expected from you. Gerald's video is good too about this circus but yours is far more real. He may be angry not to be invited but man you were invited and rejected. Kudos to you. And about the camera.. You compared it with the Zv-e1 but actually it is far worse than even the Canon R8. R8 also beats it in all aspects and can't believe the other youtubers(who were in Japan) are racing to praise the crap. Viewers see everything and this special launch would impact a lot on the community than they think.. You and Gerald did a great thing.. You Canadians :))))

Some important specs, for those that DO know how to read a spec sheet, can be deal breakers.
I think it would have been easy for Panasonic and cheap to just have a mech shutter (electronic first curtain only), like the Sony a7C II, Canon R8, and a flash, and then that would have been a real FF entry-level hybrid (even without an EVF) for creators first, but also suitable for any photography.
But so, I think they've missed the mark, by very, very little. And Panasonic only has the S5 II and S5 II X as current, well selling (for L mount cameras). All their others (S1, S1R, S1H) are obsolete because of age, size, and contrast-only autofocus, so they don't have Sony or even Canon's leverage in the range to afford to do just a creators-only, photo-less, camera. One photo-centric, video-less let's say, and others. They should have used the hype and nice appeal and looks of this camera, to make something even more useful, because they need it.

This is my first time commenting even though I have been watching your videos for years. I was struck by your not wanting to go to Japan to review the Panasonic Lumix S9. After watching your video on the S9 I watched the PetaPixel review. It was like you and your Canadian counter parts were reviewing different cameras. You could say what you wanted, Jordon and the other shills could criticize a bit but had to be careful not to be too critical or they would not be invited on a free trip around the world again by any camera company. Critical reviews like you do are hard to come by because the shills have a lot to use, you don't. Thank you (from a fellow Canadian living in Philadelphia) Lou Walter Wilson

More like a Darwin Award
One of two things must be true:
(a) Panasonic has completely whiffed, yet again, with a small/light "content creator" targeted camera, despite learning enough from the G100 debacle to equip the S9 with phase detect/subject-detect AF, IBIS, a no-crop open gate recording option, and a full frame sensor to eliminate any possible criticisms that the sensor is "too tiny and not competitive, might as well use your smartphone."
(b) Panasonic knows this market better than the rest of us do, and has given "video content creators" (which excludes RUclipsrs unless you're primarily a RUclips Shorts creator, then you're in) enough of what they do want for the S9 to succeed despite all its limitations and missing features.
I'm going to go with (a) but must also allow for the possibility of (b).
What I will say is that today's younger digital camera buyers, to grossly generalize (apologies out there to all you who are exceptions; I'm just sharing what I've seen anecdotally), (a) don't know much technically about cameras and lenses, nor do they care to learn that much, they generally want "better than their phone quality and pro bokeh look", "great colors" (aka Fuji-like), "autofocus that just works", "good in low light", "really easy and simply to use", "can easily get photos to social media without a PC"; (b) are willing to jump from brand to brand in search of "a look" or "a better camera" or "better colors" or "what @fashionista975 said was a good camera" with very little forethought or planning around specific features and/or lenses; (c) in general don't like the handling of larger "DSLR" style cameras and don't like how they feel when large cameras are pointed at them or when they're pointing large cameras at others.
Maybe the S9 will be a dream come true camera for TikTokers and Insta Stories and YT Shorts creators. I guess I really don't know.
But the S9 is, sadly, a "fail" for traditional-oriented video shooters and photographers. Sucks for us. But I hope the camera succeeds anyway. It would be good to have a healthy L mount and healthy Panasonic income flow to keep competition strong among top OEMs.
Agree, I can think of several examples of social media jobs, where S9 is perfect (quick transfer of files, LUT that can be created on location in 5 min for specific conditions) a lot of possibilities.
Literally no one is using a digital camera for TikTok. It's a phone application with all its inbuilt music and editing features. Nothing to do with the camera market. I wonder if this new camera has amazing stab or something.
@@littleidolsyou can upload any video on your phone to TikTok just like Insta stories or FB reels or YT shorts. That video doesn't have to be recorded on your phone. So a camera that syncs wirelessly to your phone (such as this) can be used for TikTok.
I think it's even WORSE if the camera is successful. People need to start thinking about this. It means Panny will have an excuse to consistently sell us more feature stripped cameras without dropping the price. Camera users are much different than TikTok users.
And I'm somebody that own thousands worth of Panasonic gear. Last camera is a red flag 🚩 to me.

I love that camera companies apparently think that short-form content means that it is automatically filmed short.
Which means that their marketing and product idea guys know really nothing about their user base. They only let the engineers and professionals talk into specs when it is a niche product for -like- twenty users, worldwide. But once they think a product is viable for a regular Joe, they completely take over the design decisions.
And this channel is basically about calling out incompetent people in charge of business, so I love it, thank you Kasey.
I love Incamera LUTs. Why? I am 62 years old, and worked for over 30 years at computers. Meanwhile I hate working on PC or smartphones because my right arm hurts even after only working a few minutes on a computer. So I am very glad, that there are cameras with uploadable LUTs like Panasonic and cameras with inbuilt film simulations like Olympus and Fuji. Since over 20 years I am shooting ooc and especially during the last 8 years the camera industrie made big steps in supporting my way of taking pictures. Hoeever I thank them very much!

Considering the original S5 didn't have a fan but had unlimited 4k 8 bit recording, I cannot believe this camera can't record for at least 30 min without overheating.

Can’t stand when RUclipsrs says that this is fighting with x100vi. It’s not even in the same category. The Fuji is always clear that it’s a photographer camera first video is a bonus. The s9 you don’t even know where it’s standing. Just becos of the lut it’s immediately compared with Fuji.. 🙄
Don't get me wrong i hate the Panasonic s9 as a release and i agree with everything you said BUT. I think its unfair to compare it with sony zv E1. Panyboy costs like 1600 euro compared to sony zve1 2600 euro (body only). That's 1k difference. It actually directly competes with canon R8 (both low cost full frame cameras and probably XS-20 in that prize range).
ZV-E1 selling for 1900.00 here in the US and the S9 for 1500.00
@@BeNiceBeGood Yes, but you'll also need to purchase a lens separately to get the ZV-E1 at that price. You can get the S9 for a hundred dollars less bundled with the 20-60 kit lens... BUT!.. You'd be much better off picking up an S5 II at B&H for $1,849, bundled with the 1.8 50mm prime. That's a much better camera setup at a significantly better price-to-performance ratio than either the S9 or the ZV-E1.

This makes my 3 year old ZV-E10 look amazing - mechanical shutter, unlimited recording with no overheating, actual AF in slo-mo, and for like 4 times less money…

Imagine the money spent on development, tooling, manufacturing and promotion on this thing.
Canon gets blasted for producing dark lenses of F4 upwards, what does Panasonic do, produce an F8. In places where this is good enough you need an EVF because you can't see a thing on the screen.
F8 is for street photography, manual because at F8 it's hard to miss focus. Comparing the F8 to Canon's F4 isn't relevant, not everybody needs or wants F1.4/2.8. Those lenses are more expensive, bigger and heavier. FF sensors and low light performance has increased over the years and shallow depth of field isn't super trend anymore. The camera is too expensive for what it is and honestly an F8 lens will confuse the majority of into photo people who would even look at this camera for following the same logic you're applying to it. If it's not f/2.8 it's worthless.

Petal Pixel said the luts are free...almost everything else you said I agree with. I honestly feel that considering how much time they spent showing off the app, their focus is that...the S9 is just the first camera that they are using to highlight their app LUT feature. The manual focus lens is just dumb combined with no EVF for outdoor filming or photography in bright sunlight. Also, those record limits...I'm a long-time Panasonic fan but the S9 is extremely underwhelming.

It's like Panasonic decided to make a camera to compete with the Sony ZVE1 but then discovered half way in that they didn't have the technology, money, knowhow and hardware to do it.

i know for a fact there is a market for people looking to get into content creation and vlogging, though i don't see how out of all the options, this would be the one. the price is great i guess though spec wise im not actually sure why this would be a choice, as much as i love and use real time lut in my s5ii i really dont think it'd be worth losing as many features as u do in the s9?
I got G9, like new for $600 plus lens. Now, with all issues, S9 should go for $500 in some time. Let’s see - Christmas maybe?
I am about to get one to add to my GX85 that I got for $400. You notice influencers never say, the S9 is a pretty decent camera but you'd be better off picking up a G9 for $600 bucks - no more Japan trips.
That camera is a joke and Gerald called the whole system out on this nonsense and people are getting defensive because they still want their free trips and stuff to regurgitate specs on launch day and get paid for it.

Loved recording 7+ hours straight on my a7IV. I don't even think it split the video it just gave me a 300GB file. Maybe I remember wrong, but the fact I only had to press record once and not worry was great. All that in 4K25p in 10 bit.
Lumix knows what they are doing, they released this handicapped version to garner interest and then in 6-9 months they will release the S92 or X with all those missing features hotshoe, 30 min record limit, maybe mechanical shutter etc. They do this all the time, it was the same thing when they released the S5 without proper working autofocus lol they could've but they instead decided to hold back for a second version to then release it. Im glad more consumers are catching on to their bullcrap and what's hilarious is that you have RUclipsrs like Terrywarfield that is screaming at people who don't like the camera and trying to influence people that the camera makes sense and people are annoying for not appreciating it. these are the type of people that makes content like : 10 reasons why I bought the S9 then 5 days later 10 reasons why I am returning the S9 lol

Thank God somebody else is talking about the 15 minute record limit. It’s a huge problem that will keep a lot of people from buying it. It doesn’t matter how many cool recording modes you have, if I can’t sit down and actually use it in my workflow. The S5II is much much better.

I'm going to call the S9 the Ugly Sister camera. Panasonic seem so obsessed with getting its size and weight down that they've cut away some essential stuff but when you've cut off your big toe to fit into the glass slipper, it's hard to look sexy walking with a limp!

@cameraconspiracies there can't be a camera with much better specs than A7SIII, because no one has a FF sensor for quicker than the old Sony 48 megapixel quad bayer pinned down to 12MP. Sensor manufacturers first need to come out with better sensor, then better cameras carrying that sensor will follow.
At the very least they could’ve added an external EVF port to the shoe.
Like Olympus did at least 10 (Ten) years ago with OM-D E-M1, Pen E-P5, Pen Mini E-PM2, ... Cameras I still use with great pleasure and great results !
