I absolutely love Tango & Cash!
The fact that the entire film works as good as it does is actually a miracle. The entire production fell apart pretty much as soon as filming began, and it's rumored that Kurt Russell actually took over as the director for the film. Jack Palance as the main villian is obviously a last minute addition in order to explain how everything is supposed to fit together, but he plays it with such relish that you can't help but enjoy it.
The entire film is a barely functioning mess held together by cheese and explosions and its great!

After reading about what went on behind the scenes with this film it is indeed a miracle anything ended up on screen at all considering it had multiple cuts as well as so much drama when filming. All that could be one of the factors that has prevented a sequel from happening for so long too.

Another movie in the same style and tone you guys should watch is the 1991 action comedy The Last Boy Scout directed by Tony Scott (Ridley's brother), and with a script written by Shane Black (who wrote also scripts for Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Long Kiss Goodnight and The Nice guys).
Really violent and gritty, but Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans and the wonderful performance of child actress Danielle Harris really make it work.
For this movie, what makes this pretty much by the number action comedy float a bit above the rest is the chemistry and comedic timing of both Stallone and Kurt Russel.
They're simply engaging and excellent on the screen together.

The guy with the pony-tail was played by Brion James who is best known for his role as Leon the replicant in the original Blade Runner. His accent definitely comes from the Dick Van Dyke school of bad cockney accents. If you want to see Kurt Russel do more straight comedy as a bit of a change from his action stuff I can't recommend highly enough the 1987 romantic comedy Overboard, which he made with his real life long time partner Goldie Hawn.

    • @scottknode898

Brion James was in many films in 1980s and 1990s as a character actor often as villains and was in 48 Hours in 1982 as a cop Kehoe with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy and its sequel Another 48 Hours in 1990. He was in Bruce Willis cop thriller Striking Distance as a cop to which was rare to see him as a good guy and Fifth Element again with Bruce Willis before his death in 1999. Tombstone was a classic western with Kurt Russell and his drama Backdraft with him as a troubled fire fighter is a classic to.

Probably the only action flick from the 80's that I go back to regularly, just so good, with the cheesiness and how easy the humor is, it ticks all the boxes for something to watch, if you need a pick-up after a tough day, or to have some laughs in general. Also - it's so quotable, it's actually ridiculous, as a gamer, the line "With your IQ, you're unarmed, but still very dangerous" is just absolute gold.

As far as 80's movies go... this one is self-aware in regards to the cheesiness. Take it as a comedy, cartoon, or caricature, if you will. No it won't win an oscar in the writing department but that's not the point. Action is done well and is reflected by great practical effects where it's clear some decent budget was spent. This movie is akin to the modern Fast and Furious franchise, with the key goal being to entertain which it does in spades. If you come it trying to watch this analytically you will be disappointed, but if not it's a fun, easy watch.

Like, they were both in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, for which, in an interview, Russell said: “It was great to be able to, once again, hang with Sly. He’s a really huge person. His demeanor, everything about him. He always puts a smile on my face, and we share lots of laughs. I find him to be very smart and very funny - and alive… He’s a great hang. 4:24 - Fun fact: In many/most areas of the United States police departments and/or the city are not legally responsible for any damage that cops cause to private property while "performing their duty". There have been cases of cops completely destroying houses while trying to apprehend a single suspect and then the city tells the owners that they're SOL when they try to get reimbursed, even if the cops had the wrong address. Many people have said that cops see such incidents as training opportunities to use the military style hardware that they've been allowed to purchase.
11:55 - That's Clint Howard, brother of Ron Howard, star of the show Happy Days and also a well known director today.
12:25 - It's a bad accept, the actor, Brion James, was born in California. He was Leon, the replicant in Blade Runner. "My mother? I'll tell you about my mother! [BOOM!]"
24:55 - Google says that the average fuse time on a grenade is about four seconds, although it can vary from 2-8 seconds. Movies usually have unrealisticly long times. Like in Die Hard 2 where they take about 30 seconds to go off.

Hey TBR, for a fun casting note. The crooked FBI agent Wyler is played by the late, great Lewis Arquette. He was a member of a unique acting dynasty that includes his son David (Dewey from the Scream movies), Patricia (Alabama from True Romance, which you guys reacted to), and Rosanna (Madonna's costar from a movie called Desperately Seeking Susan). Also, Patricia is the ex-wife of Nicolas Cage and Thomas Jane, who played the Punisher in the 2004 movie adaptation with John Travolta and the dad in The Mist, another you reacted to for the Halloween season of 2021.
And the sound technician that Cash threatened with a shotgun is played by the late Michael Jeter, who played Del the prisoner who made Mr Jingles his pet in The Green Mile, another channel reaction from a while ago. He also was the mean clown from Air Bud. And the short Mr. Noodle from Sesame Street. He unfortunately passed away in 2003 from a seizure at the age of 51. RIP to him and Lewis Arquette. Both were underappreciated actors.

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio where parts of this Movie were made including the Prison scene, the City had an old Prison that was still active at that time and that's what they used, I remember reading in the paper when they all arrived and both Stallone & Russell loved riding Harley's, they rented 2 of them locally & would be seen riding around the City together, also each morning they were in town, Stallone would get up early and jog around downtown for 45 mins before he started his day, we drove around a couple of times to see them and got some photos and autographs, no one really bothered them so we did not mind asking, and they did not have any bodyguards or anyone with them, I remember my Wife & I drove by him while he was jogging and I drove by not too slow to make sure it was Stallone & then when he caught up with us my Wife had the Window down and he said good morning & we both said your Sylvester Stallone, he said I know thank you and we all laughed, I said I was a huge fan and he said Thank you, I really appreciate that and I appreciate all of my Fans, i said would you mind if we got a photo with you & Autograph because we rarely if ever get a chance to see anyone famous around here and he stopped jogging & said sure, we talked about 5 mins after about the City and things he could visit and see and some places to eat and we gave him some tips and he said thank you but it's been nice chatting but I must finish my Jog & get ready for a full day of filming, it was pretty cool. He really seemed like a down to earth guy not like we expected.

It was directed, mostly, by famous soviet/russian filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky - in later stages he was fired by the producer who wanted the film to be goofy and almost like a spoof while Konchalovsky wanted more serious tone. So there's the reason why humour and tone of the film are quite contrived. Check out Arnold's 80s obscure action film Raw Deal.
