How Are Potato Chips Made In Factories? | Making Goods | Spark

- Making The Goods is a documentary about the technology of manufacturing some of our favourite weekend items. No weekend away is complete without your sleeping bag, BBQ or snacks. We go behind the scenes, inside factories, and show how these things are made; from the raw materials, to the final product rolling off the assembly line. We hear from experts who oversee the design and get up close to the gears, machines and conveyor belts in the factories that pump out the products.

11:11 anyone noticed the empty glass container with no wax?
yes! I don't know why, but I laughed.
I used to work for Smiths here in the UK before Walkers bought them out. ahh the good old 1980s crisps straight out the fryer taste like cardboard no flavour at all not even potatoe. when you started working for Smiths they let you eat as much as you want , you grew tired of them pretty quickly, my favourite were freshly made smokey bacon flavour when they were still warm.
I'm chomping on some right now
Ah man I wish chips still cost a nickel a bag!! ... then I could afford more dime bags... then eat more chips lol!
The lowest I’ve ever seen were 25 cent bag of chips, that’s over five times the amount.
05:37 😹😹😹 the man's said EVEN covering, IKYFL 🤣 we all appreciate that one chip that had ALL the seasoning
16-hour shifts? they really took good care of their workers!
He was speaking hypothetically.
Id never work in a factory like that ever in my life, look how monotone it is,they do the exact same thing every single day, thousands of times, thats a recipe for mental illness 😂
Was a Detroit native from 1964-2017 and in the food business.
Better Made is in my blood.
finally! i get to know chow hips are made
King Dedede: Hand me anotha bag of dem chips!
i watched this because i got curious about how chips become crunchy and stay that way as long as it is in the pack..😊
moisture makes them soft, the bags are sealed with nitrogen i think to keep that out.
@@Layarion your right 👍
Really informative video. For the complete understanding I would like to know how the peels of the potato that are removed in the peeling process is removed from the processing floor.
It’s grinded off by sand paper like texture, and it’s carried always by water
When I was a kid in the 1980s my parents rarely had potatoe chips and when they did it was a cheap greasy bland type like Lays. Thank god i discovered Middleswarth chips after I graduated. They are a mainstay my family loves
That bottling machine is putting out a hell of a lot of improperly filled bottles.
This is done on purpose, unless you rather have a full bag of stale chips? The bags are 43% nitrogen gas.
@@hefforz41 Did you even watch the video for context on my comment?
I LOVE CHIP POTATO OF LAYS they very difference and delicous
This How It's Made err.....Spark episode is pretty good!
Thanks for technology a lot of people are out of work!
there would be 200 people peeling if it wasn't for those damn friers
There better be potato chips in the pantry now or my mom’s gonna get it
Fun fact: the Irish were the first to make flavoured crisps
Kind of weird that the oldest potato chip recipe is from 1817 but it took until the 1950's before someone asked themselves 'besides salt, what else could we put on them?'.
@john simmons never heard that, do you have a link for that that I could have a read of?
The British invented the potato crisp.........................
@@stevebarbier5602 yes, and the Irish company tayto were the first to make flavoured ones...............
Bless the Irish
Oh great, now I'm craving potato chips!

Lyrical Squirel chip* 😂
Tristan B 0:14 chop

I wish, one day, a chips making factory will make little overcooked chips. I like them brown, a little dark. I wrote to some chips makers but I was always told, we'll submit you suggestion to our customer department...Never heard again, why?
This is a basic simplistic manufacturing unit if you compare it with making tablets of potatoe with vitamins incorporate it in such a way to protect the wholesomeness of final product.
I'm eating disco crisps while watching this
In my country we call it "packet of chips" and french fries are also called Chips🤣
5:17, mans throwing away a diamond.. what a shame.
lol😀
I'm having some right now lol

Now I'm here
Is it just me but the narrator sounds a lot like John Quinciniones😂😂 (I don’t know how to spell his last name lol)
Sure everybody high watched this
Is the starch recovered?
Why? Was it unwell?
What is company name for the chairs?
Calling chips crisps is definitely a crime 😂😂😂
Crisps
They’re called crisps my brothers
The bag says chips
18:39 Really, you expect us to believe that! Looks like highly cleaned/processed plastic, maybe even virgin. Feedstock would be much more varied if was really recycled from different sources.
Some recycling companies sell recycled plastic that was separated, confectioned, removed labels, cleansed, dried and packaged. The only problem is that it is often more expensive than pure non-recycled plastic. Not many factories use that.
All these potato chips and we get mostly air
I work at Frito lay and wanted to check this out 🤣
I’m eating chips while driving my mercury powered boat across Lake Ontario towards Harbourfront Toronto
In the uk we call them crisps
I want to be a seasoning barrel!!!!
I just made some home made perfect crisps, I was wondering why they can't make perfect chips or crisps in factories so I came here, to see what is so different they do and where do they go wrong, so now I see why, but I can't tell you my secret, how I make perfect crisps, as I intend to become a major competitor soon.....watch this space.....
Who
😅
Me eating potato chips watching this like ....
👁👄👁
Wowwwww😃😃😃👍👍
I'll get myself fired after just one day working at such factory.... for eating the chip non stop 🤣🤣🤣
how those workers even resist the temptation lol..
Lol I work in a chip plant and my job is to literally eat the chips every half hour trust me you get tired of them quickly
@@laurabryant4100 I was going to say the same thing. Some chocolate companies use to allow the factory workers to help themselves on the job. Very soon they never wanted to eat chocolate again.
@@laurabryant4100 But you get to try different flavours? How come its every 30 mins
@@Music-zz5il to make sure the chips are salted or seasoned correctly
Vitamin C is in the peel... leave the peel on. I like the burnt ones too.

What did they do during Potato off-season?...😝😝
Play with Mr.Potato Head!
Slice potatoes and fry them. Just saving everyone time.

How are so many potatos produced to begin with though...
And there are factories like this all over the world.
The food industry is insane.
We totally take it for granted.
Chips isn't even a main meal and this much is produced to keep the shelves full.
Now I understand how hard managing famine should've been for the old governments.
11 to 13 weeks... shit i be buying chips that are 2.5 years old.
but how do they make pringles where every chip is the same?
They are made from corn flour, masa, and vegetable oil. The mixture is rolled out onto a flat sheet on what we call a die cut sheeter. A rolling set of dies cuts out a row of flat chips, then they are fed into an oven. The length after they are cooked they are fed into coating drums, where they are seasoned, dumped onto a weigh scale, and packaged.
You mean “Cuomo Chips” for those in NY

"The science of manufacturing these items has evolved over time." No, the technology has developed. Science does not evolve, science is discovered and is and always will be the same.
