A wonderful book! I love it! As a local, Miss Dukes life has always interested me.

Ms. Bingham's chapter on Doris Duke's relationship with Louis Bromfield and his Malabar Farm is an absolute train wreck rife with cut-and-paste paragraphs lifted from historical markers and many outright glaring mistakes. She refers to Bromfield's Richland County as Richmond County. She refers to Bromfield's youngest daughter as the one with psychiatric problems. That would be his eldest, Ann. The youngest, Ellen, was a successful rancher in Brazil and an accomplished author. There are many other sloppy, lazy mistakes with the worst being her version of Duke's efforts to help purchase the wooded hillside that bears Duke's name today, The Doris Duke Woods. I'm Bingham's narrative, Doris Duke fronted the money to repurchase the acreage AFTER it had been decimated by loggers with "nothing but stumps left on the hillside." In reality, Duke supplied the final $30,000 to help The Friends of the Land conservation group meet the $145,000 asking price for Malabar Farm thus SAVING the woods from the chainsaws of the logging company that had already marked the trees for cutting. Thanks to Duke, NO trees were cut. Why would Bingham create a false narrative of devastation requiring years of regrowth? She ends the chapter by claiming few locals know why that stand of trees in Malabar Farm State Park is now named the Doris Duke Woods. To the contrary! Everyone knows the story, and it's nothing close to what this woman has passed off as historical research. One has to wonder how much more of the book has been slapped together in such a lazy, sloppy fashion. For shame, Ms. Bingham.
