The Butler Did It!: The Legal Battle Over the Estate of Doris Duke

  • Don Howarth and Suzelle M. Smith lectured at Lady Margaret Hall on their handling of what Hollywood called "the greatest will contest of all times." When the tobacco heiress Doris Duke, "the richest little girl in the world," died, her will left her $1.5 billion estate in the control of her butler. Mr. Howarth and Ms. Smith were hired to challenge the will and their representation resulted in the removal of the opposing trustees, the preliminary executor, and a major banking institution. Their work ultimately resulted in the appointment of the firm's client as a trustee of the Duke Estate.

The butler clearly did it. He scared me to death. She was the nicest woman I ever met. She and I hit it off when I was a young 17 year old girl. Ms. Duke alway’s called my mom and asked if she'd mind if she could see me. My mom loved her so much and they even spoke about humanitarian aid and Ms Duke helped my mom who devoted her life to humanitarian aid all over the world. My grandfather made pearls for her one of a kind. It was shocking when she asked my mother about a set of pearls she was wearing. That's when we learned of that as my grandfather was the man who made one of a kind design jewelry introducing pearls to the Japanese made so many different styles for many. He also was the one if you're wearing an Eternity band made the first in the world. I'm really happy I have the first he made. Ms Duke became a very important part of my life and certain decisions I'd ask her advice for. It breaks my heart what the state of New Jersey has been endlessly doing to her estate the grounds that she loved so dearly her amazing trees she had flown in from Africa and planted so perfectly. I'll often go quietly and just sit and remember those wounderful moments memories of having the pleasure of knowing the real woman behind certain people's beliefs. There's so many things people aren't aware of that she deserves credit for and the state has some nerve damaging what truly could have been a fantastic historical history lesson and more. I miss her dearly. Was she close to her family? I'll never speak regarding that. She in fact lived very down to earth often she'd even randomly leave her house and enjoy the people who came to visit her beautiful green houses. I remember the first time I saw her do it and the faces of shock and amazement on people's faces. She wasn't what people assumed she was in any sense or did she care much for having to be private protected 247. I remember a real woman human being. Money is nice but there's many things it can't buy it can't bring joy and happiness
She often said certain thing's like that to me. I can say I am greatful for certain part's of the 80’s and when she suddenly passed away I was on the road. I thank her for the advice she gave me on that one as well. Wonderfully dressed alway’s Ms Duke looked even in her long flowing dressed she'd wear relaxing and her lovely spots wear. She brought me my frist amazing Ralph Lauren sweater. I cherish every moment good or sad when around her.

I had watched the HBO film "Bernard and Doris." I did suspect it wasn't as rosy as that film portrayed. I do believe that justice was served in this case. However, being Irish, I do take offense to my nationality being included in a list of slurs describing Bernard. Also, I'm sure butlers would not feel elevated by the implication of the sentence Ms. Smith repeated several times. The repetition of the slurs marred an otherwise very interesting and enlightening presentation.

What an unexpected surprise to see the two dedicated people in the justice EFFORTS of the "DORIS DUKE" MYSTERY. Unfortunately, I see the same actors of "Good Will" playing to the audience. Although the description of her history may be true of fact, you left out huge gaps to fit your best interest. I believe there are lawyers out there that truly fight for justice with or without financial incentives. I believe there are few there to serve with the later. The scandal that surrounded Doris Duke in last months of her life was the last of many she endured throughout her incredible life. Subject to interpretation, Howarth and Smith put themselves as self proclaimed saviors presenting themselves as angels with a halo and earned wings. Only due to the personal knowledge and experience these two are truly all about and how they operate, I am appalled to hear their omissions, dismiss the truth and bypass revealing their unethical practices for their own financial incentives. If I had an invitation to participate in this discussion, these two would be embarrassed, ashamed and shed light on the true skill of these types of lawyers that get the job done at any cost. LIES, LIES, LIES....but it was entertaining. Maybe next time you will speak the truth and not omit and bypass the important and revealing information the public should know, not just what self serving statements you wish them to know. I watched the body language and facial expressions of the two of you, the deception was obvious to me because of the truth you refuse to tell. For the sake of justice, the real events that occurred and specifics can be traced back in real documents, not the words of Howarth and Smith. They should be disbarred for their unethical practices.....YOU KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! SOME PEOPLE NEVER CHANGE. ENJOY THE PROCEEDS FROM YOUR EVIL WAYS.

Stating that people, including you, can interject foul language in a presentation because the president at the time had a “potty mouth” is beyond immature. Just because a president has no class and even less respect for decent folks in front of whom he speaks does not mean that others should follow suit. Absolutely, amazingly ludicrous. (I’m commenting on the concept and the irrational conclusion you’ve drawn-and not the particular word “arse,” which I don’t think is particularly bad or crude.)

the royal protocol of my identity has been in the media since i was born and it shows who my biological mother and father are and people denying my identity can be arrested , i am the owner of my mother and father estates and my grandfathers estates forever, and people are obligated to mention who i am every time they talk about my mother and father and my grandparents , if they don't they must shut down all lectures and all events, it is obligations of laws to mention who i am!!!!!!!!!!!
