5:25 you know dale is a good dude. “What was your first car?” As if to say “enough about me, let’s talk about you” because you can tell the guy legitimately loves cars. Pretty awesome.
Got to be a painful to think that most of these safety precautions were taken because his father was killed in front of him and everyone else watching.
I've been a Dale Sr. fan since I was like 10 years old. Decided to take my vacation and go to the 2001 Daytona 500 to see Jr. and Sr. run. Bought a handheld digital scanner and headset so I could listen to the in-car audio from both cars. I was standing in my seat on the backstretch just before turn 4, watching father and son race toward that finish line. Only one of them made it. Within seconds I knew, because I was listening. I literally couldn't talk to anyone, couldn't open my mouth. Nobody around me spoke. On some of their faces was nothing but disbelief and confusion, others just stood there with tears streaming down and clutched their loved ones. After the race it was more of the same. People began to speak in more or less broken or hushed tones, to each other, or in small groups. That entire day was the same thing everywhere I went. I've never seen an entire town affected like that by one person's death. So many people remained solemn on the day after. I didn't even speak much on the drive home. I have a photo of Dale Sr's transporter heading back to North Carolina on my wall, and my ticket is framed and on my desk.
I think that was the race that Michael Waltrip won... I saw footage of Darrel Waltrip as one of the commentators, and he was gravely worried about Dale Sr when he was being pulled out.
Minnesota Fatz well, after Dale the safety rules were more enforced. Snr used to race with open face helmet and rearranged harness points so he could look around. These both attributed to his death.
I saw a pristine looking third-gen Taurus at 7-Eleven a while back, and I took a second to appreciate the fact that someone took such good care of a Ford sedan (an endangered species, mind you) for 20 years.
3:37 The rareness of the car is a factor in my mind. Cash for Clunkers took alot of those older cars off the streets and all the survived are mostly collectors now, IMO
Rogan doesn't know wtf he's talking about here. Dale is right, cars that aren't considered cool right now, will be cool soon. Tides change and people grow fond of things they once overlooked as boring or outdated. There are several cars from the early 2000's that are wildly popular and growing in fame every single year that passes.
Still won't be as cool as the 30s, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's cars. If those 90s and 2000s cars and trucks are popular those other vintage muscle cars and hot rods are just gonna appreciate even more and become way more valuable than any car in the 2000s or 90s.
1995 Toyota Tacoma was a dam nice looking pickup when it debuted. Still are. All of those Japenese pickups, especially the Toyotas from the '80's are worth money, and going up every day. Power strokes from the '90's, and Ram's with the 12 V Cummins, are classics too.
I love 80s Tacomas and I'm 26 lol. There's something about seeing a car that was around when you were a little kid and then growing up and seeing it still running... Which has a lot of value to me.
the part about the 85 chevy is hilarious. Born in 1999, im 21, people my age think driving a car from the 90s is cool. an 85 chevy pick up would be a dream

I ran up on Dale Sr on the highway and he was going 55. I down shifted and blew him away!!! Passing Dale Earnhardt was by far my favorite driving moment!!
My dad had a 70 chevelle SS back in the late 70s. Was dark red with white stripes, it was stolen in the blink of an eye when he ran into a store real quick. They later found what was left in a chop shop in boston.
Dale Jr is so cool. I rarely think i could be good mates with any famous racers but he could just be another one of my friends by the way he comes across, normal and humble

I hear ya. Couldnt believe it myself until I started looking for a clean late 80s iroc or trans am GTA. Anything really really nice is well Into 17-22k or more if low miles. They dont make alot of replacement parts for 80s cars especially interior. If someone has a super clean one they are bringing money for sure.
85-87 Grand Nationals, 78-81 Camaro Z28, 84-88 Monte Carlos and 86-90 Mustangs are becoming highly desirable nowadays and the future. Not alot out there in good shape, an for the right price.
Wont be worth as much as 60's early 70's as they didnt perform as well... Remember old recorded times for 60's and 70's cars were off as 185-70 series 14 inch bias ply tires didnt hook thus cars were up to 3 seconds off 0-60 and 1/4 mile ! Basically all were 12 second cars if proper tires and drag strip tracks like today(didnt have the compounds then like today) 11 seconds for Hemi/440 6bbl Dodge/Plymouth and Ls-6 Chevelles and some 455 Olds/Buick/Pontiacs !!! My then 4 year old bone stock 68 Charger RT 440 4bbl auto,3.23 gear ran high 12's with bias ply 195 70 series...It had 185-75 series white walls when I bouth it in 1972 with 54,000 miles...In 1976 stock besides pro trac 275 wide bias ply tires it ran 12.60's bone stock...Stock engine never touched,I added headers and traction bars !!! It ran 12.30's with intake and carburetore change in 1980 and my 1st set of radial tires with 130,000 miles on the clock and wasnt my daily driver, those old cars had over 200,000 then ..I worked at a dealer and seen this !! 5 digit odometer meaning after 99,999 they went to 00,000 ! My buddies 68 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon with the 440 TNT (most had the non hi perf) used to beat 1986-1993 Mustang 5.0 5 speeds (automatic 5.0 Mustangs used a different head/cam and 20 less hp and less torque, people dont know this)...My Sister had 2 new Mustang GT 5.0 1 auto 1 5 speed ! LX coupe 5 sped was the quickest, off road exhaust, computer upgrade still couldnt beat my 1969 parts car 440 Chrysler New Yorker 4 door, with a caved in passenger side (got hit by a semi) car ran/drove perfect..I resotred a 69 300 using the fenders/dash,engine/trans/rear end and bumpers from it (still have the 69 300 2door,previous owner took the 440 /trans for a Coronet..I restored the 300 ,oh boy ).. My Mom had a new Monte Carlo SS 1985 model slow as hell ,my Grand Parents 1970 Fury 383 2bbl ate it alive !! Just left it standing still lol...Mom still has it and Dad is the original owner of a 440 6bbl/auto/3.54 gear Cuda,he is in his 80's..Car ran high 11's in 1970 2 weeks after he bought it,he added slicks that still spun 100 feet,retuned/jetted the carbs and not sur eif he had headers at that point ! Hemi guys were low - high 11's ,10's with cam change..Thats how it was..Then you had clowns spinning the tires and running 12's,13's,14's and saying yep thats it lol Clowns !
What Joe forgets about his mom's Cuda etc is that in the 70's the gov't stepped in and stopped the hp race and made the big 3 comply with epa and mileage standards. So even if her '69 Cuda was only 5 years old, it was still viewed with a respect of a bygone era. My first car was a '68 GTX. These cars were everywhere; SS's, Z28's, Roadrunners, H/O Cutlass.........you name it and we beat the ever lovin' hell out of them!!!!! To watch these car auctions and see these very cars bring outrageous money just makes me laugh at the fact that the new owners will never know the fun we had with them. Instead, they now own an icon of showing how much money they have. And on a sadder note; 30-40 years ago at car shows, you would always see several model T's proudly displayed by their owners. Now, with the changing of the guard, the model T has all but disappeared.
My dad and I fully restored a 1973 z28 from like 06-2012 in our basement. 350 v8, headers, cams, hugger orange with black stripes. Absolutely beautiful car I wish we were still riding in that car today.
Cars from the 60s and very early 70s were classics even in the mid-70s because they didn't have plastic bumpers and the engines were not detuned because of emission standards. Besides that they just had better styling. A 350 cubic inch engine putting out only 120 horsepower just wasn't going to cut the mustard.
Dale’s so right, I just picked up an 85 Chevy pickup, K10, 350, 4 speed, for these days it’s a pretty cool throw back truck, the square bodies are getting real popular
Dale is right about driving an 85 Chevy truck. Growing up my dad bought only gm products. Buick cars and Chevy trucks. Till the late 80s, 88,89 he bought my mom a Toyota Camry then he bought a 02 Camry then he bought her a Cadillac and bout him a 96 dodge ram. I turned out to be a Ford man but I would love to have an 87 Chevrolet truck,4x4 swb single cab, granny 4 speed. Two tone red and silver paint.
Such a normal dude, I did a quick search and never expected this! "With an estimated net worth of about $400 million, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not only one of the richest NASCAR drivers in history, but also one of the richest athletes of all time."
I had an E30 and I have an AE86. They where probably regular traffic in the 90’s, but drive one of those nowadays you’d get a thumbs up every so often.
Joe "old Car Guys Say 60's Muscle Cars ARE DA BEST CARS so I can't see how 70's/80's cars could appreciate like 60's muscle even though Muscle prices are cooling and 70's/80's car prices are getting very hot" Rogan
I like muscle cars before 1970 and after 1965. I love them but their handling is terrible. They're great if you just go straight. Ten years ago, I updated a 1970 Chevelle SS I've owned for 22 years. I updated the suspension to coil overs and independent suspension. All my friends who are 'purists' hated it. Until the rode in it... It's my car and I'm not selling and so what if isn't stock suspension.
A good friend of mine bought an 86 C10 longbed about 8 years ago for dirt before the Squarebody market started to pick up steam. Wasn't the cleanest but it was a decent driver with a healthy 350. Had a lot of fun wrenching on it with him and doing burnouts and I regret not buying it off him when he moved. You'd have to pay at least 3x that amount to get the same truck today and I don't see values slowing down.
I have a 67 International 1200 4x4, 72 chevelle SS, 85 GMC K10, 86 IROC Camaro now and I had a 90 Mustang LS 20+ years ago in high school. This episode is 4 years old but Dale called the 80s cars and trucks being cool. The Chevelle has been a classic and well loved for years now. The 80s stuff was junk and thought of as white trash but now I’ve had more people trying to buy my IROC and K10 in the last year or two then ever. They definitely get a lot of attention nowadays and guys saying how they used to have one.
@@thebigv8644 🤦♂️ ur sad buddy. Everyone refers to all push rod vortex v8’s as a LS then you go down the line by clarifying which gen. The little name changes because there’s a different sleeve or different lifters or different bore size is irrelevant and if u were apart of the car community you’d know that because it’s pretty uniform to refere to all vortecs after 98 as LS (w/throttle body) or LT direct injecting. Only time you call each block by individual name is if you’re at the junk yard picking it from a Tahoe.
I gave up a 69’GTO Judge I bought in the 90’s I bought for $3500.We rebuilt the engine,Highway Rear end for traveling cleaned it up.I sold it 3yrs later for $25 Grand to buy a 71’Long bed I restomoded, new engine suspension custom paint and wheels. Ole Blue was a badass Chevy.I regret the sale every time I see any 69-70 GoAT.I gave up my dream car I had as a teenager and now I can’t even afford a clone..lol.. Times have changed and those old cars are investments now.

Facts called it 2 years ago
There is not a seat out there today that is more comfortable that a 80s blazer captains chair

Hemi guys were low - high 11's ,10's with cam change..Thats how it was..Then you had clowns spinning the tires and running 12's,13's,14's and saying yep thats it lol Clowns !
boskey10 a
What Joe forgets about his mom's Cuda etc is that in the 70's the gov't stepped in and stopped the hp race and made the big 3 comply with epa and mileage standards.
Jr is such a wholesome guy. Would love to meet him one day.
just picked up an 88 S-10........... living the dream !
My dad and I fully restored a 1973 z28 from like 06-2012 in our basement. 350 v8, headers, cams, hugger orange with black stripes. Absolutely beautiful car I wish we were still riding in that car today.
Dale Jr is right about '70s '80s pickups getting popular. A clean square body goes for $15-30,000.
85 Chevy c/k series are awesome already
Bowhuntin bob all square body’s are awesome 73-87 love em
“Man this 96 accord is a fucking classic mate!”
I could listen to these guys talk about muscle cars all day.
80's pickups i agree with JR. They are awesome
Hell yeah Dale!! Who Doesn’t love a nice square body GM or dent-side Ford etc?? 🔥
Such a normal dude, I did a quick search and never expected this! "With an estimated net worth of about $400 million, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not only one of the richest NASCAR drivers in history, but also one of the richest athletes of all time."
76' Laguna... man no one loves those but theyre so rare Dale has a great example of one too
I had an E30 and I have an AE86. They where probably regular traffic in the 90’s, but drive one of those nowadays you’d get a thumbs up every so often.
76 chevelle Malibu now that was my first v8 car. Loved it.
Dudes super down to earth good ole boy who just likes cars. Like his dad.
Great guys.
Love all old school muscle. Own a 1970 Pontiac Firebird and 1989 Chevy Camaro.
I could listen to these 2 all day long
Dale Jr is full of wisdom & Knowledge
Joe "old Car Guys Say 60's Muscle Cars ARE DA BEST CARS so I can't see how 70's/80's cars could appreciate like 60's muscle even though Muscle prices are cooling and 70's/80's car prices are getting very hot" Rogan
Matt AdRev Jesus Christ 😂😂
There are still plenty of cool cars in the 90s but post 2000 they are hot bits of crap.
I drive a 68 cougar. Love it.
I am driving around in a 93 Chevy truck and it’s cool as hell
I had a '93 S10 for my 1st car!!! I'm always looking for one in decent shape to buy!! I absolutely love S10s
DJD and JRE???? Please do it again, but in Jr's studio!! And keep doing it like yearly. This was fantastic. The entire podcast.
Love the fact he owns an OLDSMOBILE!!! I own a 1968 F-Eighty-Five and a 1984 Hurst/Olds! See you around Dale!✌
My dad still has his 70 Chevelle from his HS days. Loves it more than me for sure.
Logoski 😂 this is funny bc I’m sure it’s true. My dad ain’t shit either bud
Maybe you were conceived in it? I know somebody with a car like that, you know sentimental value.
On 2Wheels
My 67 stang is quite agile tbh
@@EDeeire I'm a fan of the Mach I 1970 mustang but that suspension has to go.
It's a good thing they got all these suspension upgrade kits now for almost every muscle car.
I have a 64 ss. Although not a muscle car, they came factory w 14s which is ridiculous. Suspension equally illequipped
@@Fnberg744 Um, 64 what? and SS models generally are muscle cars... You seem confused in your comment...
1972 Chevy Cheyenne Super 20 4x4. That’s my dream car.
My first car was my grandfathers old 1967 Chevelle loved that car
85 Square Body’s have always been cool What’s this old boy talking about.
Earnhardt is correct on the 80's pick up trucks. Already gaining a following.
I like the story of Dale Sr. buying him a weed eater for his birthday.Back when Dale Jr. was working doing groundskeeping at the race track.
People buy that what brings back memories. The older we get the new cars will make us happy.
Junior knows his cars. I like his style.
I love this guy he's such a regular guy you would never guess he's worth hundreds of millions.
What a beautiful human being. Dale for president...
Dale just straight up seems like a great human
I love my 82 swb-2wd chevy truck...so Dale is right 100%
I have a 67 International 1200 4x4, 72 chevelle SS, 85 GMC K10, 86 IROC Camaro now and I had a 90 Mustang LS 20+ years ago in high school.
I love how he referred to as a vortec motor and didn’t just call it an LS😂
Not always the same thing
Vortec is iron block
A lot of LS engines are aluminum
Avery Young only LS that’s aluminum is the car engines. Ain’t no truck LS before 2013 that’s aluminum. Also the LT’s are mostly aluminum
Avery Young also you do realize vortec is the company that makes all gm v8’s. Ls is just apart of the part number
@@tannercox4537 might wanna research LC9 buddy...
Building my 1984 Mustang GT 5.0L. 80's awesomeness.
This conversation is fascinating
Love my 80s pickups
I wonder if Jr still takes the car around the track by himself for fun, or even for therapy sometimes.
I got a Pontiac G8 GT. I was pretty proud to find out Jr has one too
At 3:39 what he said is already cool in the country 😂
in 85 i got my 68 Nova. it was ONLY 17 yrs old and paid $2500... 15 yrs later was getting offered $10k.. I still have her
Not going to lie 80s trucks have that cool classic look
Mario Rodriguez 1987 Chevy c10 custom deluxe= badass
I gave up a 69’GTO Judge I bought in the 90’s I bought for $3500.We rebuilt the engine,Highway Rear end for traveling cleaned it up.I sold it 3yrs later for $25 Grand to buy a 71’Long bed I restomoded, new engine suspension custom paint and wheels. Ole Blue was a badass Chevy.I regret the sale every time I see any 69-70 GoAT.I gave up my dream car I had as a teenager and now I can’t even afford a clone..lol.. Times have changed and those old cars are investments now.
