  • A review of the 2017 Porsche 911 GT3 Clubsport and a comparison to the 2014 911 GT3 we recently filmed. Clubsport spec means it has the 918 Spyder carbon seats and also a half roll cage. It was a nasty winter day but we still managed to get it out on the road for a drive.
    At time of publication the car was available for sale at 911virgin.com

    I would never argue that PDK is not better than manual because on paper it is, but there are two features on it that you didn’t mention. One is the flat foot shift that they integrated into the 991.2 gt3 manual allowing you to keep your foot to the floor during an up change. I am sure that would not mean it is as quick as a pdk obviously but would keep the power curve from looking like a saw tooth at least in theory. Second is the auto-rev matching which would on track also make you look like a hero on the down shifts and keep the car very stable. I have never driven one but it is my dream car, currently I have a 991.2 carrera 7 speed that is my daily and has 72k miles after owning it for 4 years 😃

      If you use the clutch to change gear there will still be a saw tooth effect on the speed curve because drive is removed for as long as it takes you to press the clutch, change gear then release the clutch regardless of whether the engine revs drop or not. You are also being very hard on your gearbox. On a GT£ cup car it doesn't matter because the gearbox is a consumable - it gets pulled apart and rebuilt. Do you want to do the same on your road car ?

      @@911virgin8 I agree with you there, but It does slightly improve the 0-60 from some videos I have seen. Also, Porsche implemented this feature for the 991.2 gt3 manual and didn’t market it so many people aren’t aware of it. Too bad they didn’t add the no lift shift feature to other manuals they offer since I imagine it is only software. In my carrera I have to change gear normally and let off the throttle.

    The 991.2 GT3 manual has the ability to flat floor shift , ie you don't actually have to come off the throttle when shifting / driving hard . It also auto blips on downshift when " sport " button is pushed . Yep mine is a 991.2 GT3 CS Manual :) I agree that the PDK is the better gearbox for track use if your chasing lap times There's an interesting video on YT of a 991.2 Manual lapping the Ring at a very decent time of 6.58 , and it was on Pirelli Trofeo's and not Michelin Cup 2's so not too shabby at all .

    Agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts on the car and gearbox. Again sports seats are nice if one is seriously going to track the car regularly otherwise normal comfort seats are a smarter option for normal road use. Horses for courses and I’ve met too many folks who’ve spec’d cars without properly thinking and as you say follow the crowd ending up with something they regret.

    You never mention the internal differences between the 3.8 and the 4.0 engine but l suppose that's been done to death.Ipersonally find flicking a paddle pretty boring after a while.l wouldn't have an automatic for the road only for the track.I find the bucket seats great but need to be lifted at the front.Seat recliner brackets can be purchased that helps.Hard to know what to replace the four litre with its pretty special.

    Great video. I have a video request or a simple reply would be appreciated.I know that people that can afford these cars don’t have to ask, I’m not wealthy but love cars that I shouldn’t buy and will stretch to get them. So my question is what are the running cost of a GT3 or Gt3RS. I’d like to know a rough guide of servicing costs, thanks

    • @911virgin8
      @911virgin8  5 месяцев назад

      As a very rough guide allow £2-4k per year. The exact cost will of course depend on use.

    Henry, ignoring application / use just down to ergonomics and your preference what’s your pick between 991.2 GT3 and 991.1 GT3RS. I’m in the market this year however need to make my mind up and view some cars.

    • @911virgin8
      @911virgin8  9 месяцев назад

      I don't think you can ignore application. Ultimately the RS is a very track focused machine. From an investment perspective you will have to make your own mind up. The 992 market / paying over list price potentially muddies the waters a bit but I think 991 backwards is well enough established to be largely immune from drastic movements.

    With the manual gearbox, you will only have to push a button and then the Gearbox would automatically heal toe for you That means you don't have to heal toe yourself the car does it for you Automatically

      Flat shift sort of tries to emulate the benefits of PDK but ultimately can't quite match them.

      What a shame, I went on your channel to see a master class in video creation only to find that you haven't made any. The videos are unscripted, there isn't a huge production team and we make no charge for viewing. RUclips like to add in advertising which I hope is largely unobtrusive. Ultimately not a channel for you. All the best 🙂

      I have never claimed to be an expert in making videos nor indeed Porsches. Every day is a school day and I am always open to learning. There are many aspects where I constantly look to improve particularly things like editing which is always hard. The problem is your tone is a bit brusque and, with the greatest respect having some skin in the game would add weight to your comments. Try filming a review unscripted whilst handling all the technical aspects and fitting it into a quick window before the heavens open. Oh, and choose a winters day when it gets too dark to film much after 3.00pm.
      In terms of "free advertising" given the time these things take to make I'm not sure its free. Call me an egotistical maniac if you will but I value my time. Ultimately I look at a lot of videos on here where people seem to take forever to get to a rather limp point, keep back tracking, drop click bait like confetti, mention sponsors and the need to subscribe. I'm hoping we're better than that. There is probably lower hanging fruit to pick but yes, you're correct I could be much better at this. I could also lose some weight, consider styling and visual appearance and then look at when videos get uploaded to gain maximum tactical advantage rather than just stick them on when ready. I'm happy to be judged on my comments and realise its a public space. I also want people to know I've got sense of humour 🙂@@diremond3700
