I have watched every vod of this playthrough, and since dying is it's own form of progress in this game, its a special thing in it's own way. So I kept track of every death from that first waking moment. Here is every way PointCrow died while playing outer wilds
    Crow deaths, final count
Forgot suit: 2 - His 1st death was caused by this too
Sun: 19 (once to demonstrate the time loop mechanic)
    Eaten by Anglerfish: 12
Gravity: 1 (This simply means dying from FALL damage, not sling-shotting into something)
    Crushed by Sand: 3
    Survived until Supernova: 18
    Ghost matter: 2
No oxygen: (most of this was using it as fuel to reset) 14
No seatbelts: 2 (one death from anglerfish shoving him into the back of the ship)
Brittle hollow being bitter: 1 (He got hit, BY a piece of the planet falling into the black hole)
    Ship exploding: 2
    Drowning: 1
Too fast: 4 (This is caused by flinging into something too fast, OR crashing the ship too fast)
    Hollow lantern: 1
    Fire: 1
Destroying the fabric of reality: 3 times!!
Totaling 86 deaths on the journey to the end of the universe. So even IF he could only have reset 105 times. He could have done it. GG my man, and thank you for this amazing journey through one of my all time favorite games again. And if you play the DLC, I'll death tally that too!

Outer Wilds is The Allegory. I adore listening to people's thoughts on the game and thinking about how the same could be said of Life itself.
"This has to be, God, one of the best playthroughs I've ever done."
"You can't go through the game a second time."
"I'm so glad I finished it."
'That's why people look for new players, to live vicariously through them doing it for the first time.'
"The Forge was probably the worst part for me."
    "It was all worth it."
"The way we did it was perfect."
"I liked the path that _I_ took."
"We discovered the small things first; before the overarching story took place."
"There's no wrong way to play it."
"There were so many insane moments."
'I didn't pay attention to the beginning. I skipped so much. And then I started to realize how _important_ it was to not miss it - and I never went back.'
(chat) "I missed it, do it again."
And finally, a gem from my brother's playthrough:
"Y'know, I just realized…there's stuff to explore on my home planet. I kept fucking off onto other planets and didn't stop to think my home is full of mystery too."
I started playing this game because of your video Eric. Thank you for helping me find one of the greatest games of all time. Life changing experience and so glad to get to see you go through it.

The probe launches over 9 million times
    9 million cycles * 22 minutes per cycle = 198 million minutes.
In days, that is 137,500 days.
If someone were conscious for the entirety of the time the ash twin project would have needed to be active to find the Eye, they would need to be alive for around 376 years. That's INSANE.

Keep in mind the game is kind of abstracted, but if we actually take each rotation of the sun for one of the planets in Outer Wilds as a day in the experience of a Hearthian, it would be maaaany many times more, seeing as 22 minutes of game time is like, 10 days in Timber Hearth

(ok i just finished the vod) re: missing anything in the playthrough, the one big thing that i think you were missing (though it wasn't necessary for solving the mystery / reaching the eye) was a LOT of character dialogue. not just with the hearthians at the beginning but towards the end when you've uncovered a lot of discoveries it unlocks a lot of fun and interesting dialogue with other hearthian astronauts across the different planets, who have different insights and personalities and reactions to different discoveries you've made, so it helps to build their personalities if you revisit and re-talk to characters throughout the game. chert in particular has some fun dialogue throughout a loop :)

HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD! If it was not already obvious, this is a game best experienced blind. Though i avoid any big DLC spoilers, there are some minor hints as to what might be contained within the expansion, though hopefully not enough to ruin it for anyone.
Timeline: (DLC lore). The eye emits a signal that the nomai of esker's vessel discover. In haste, they warp to the star system before the unknown is lost. Upon reaching the solar system, they get trapped in dark bramble and flee in escape pods when their outgoing communication and calls for help break. Pod 3 in which captain esker was riding fails to make it out of dark bramble, and in desperation, they attempt to return to the vessel, only to find they dont have the resources for the trip and they all die at the baby seed, the closer of the 2 signals. The other 2 escape pods make it out and crash on 2 different planets, dividing the nomai into 2 different "cities" each with their own problems, but similar goals. As they rebuild and get back to the space age of development, they take note of a mysterious moon only sometimes present around each of their homes. Upon reuniting, the nomai learn that their mysterious moon is a shared phenomenon and use it as the scientific goal for them to strive for, now that the eye has mysteriously gone silent (i wonder if there is an answer out there as to why). After a while, the moon is solved, just to find hints at the truth of the eye. With the eye back in sight, the new goal is obvious. All this scientific study takes multiple generations; the quoom, now known, becomes a pilgrimage for young nomai to become adults, testing their ability to gather the information to reach the sixth location (orbiting the eye) and giving them a glimps of the goal they strive for. Meanwhile, the adults, fully focused on the eye, discover a new aspect of their black/white hole warp technology, time dilation. With it, a new plan begins to form: use the "time travel" to send data back in time to the one-time use machine meant to find it, powering the entire thing with a level of power that can only be achieved by supernovae. With only one local star, they have little choice as to where to get the power, but a moral issue arises as creating a premature death of the star would doom the entire solar system, success or failure. Only by use of time travel can the system be stopped after the data has been collected but before the death of the solar system. Some nomai are willing to take the risk, while others have grown fond of a certain, 4-eyed primitive life form and dare not risk their safety for the sake of their science. Eventually, enough fail saves are in place to agree to the plan, only for it to fail. Ever the curious scientists, instead of moping over the failure, they go to explore a new comet visiting the solar system. Inside, they find something horrible: it is carrying a payload certain to destroy all life in the solar system should it break free. As one nomai stays behind to try and discover any sort of method to protect their species, the remaining members of the crew start to evacuate, but it is too late. No sooner than the messenger escapes the center of the comet and the researcher approaches the volatile nuke does it erupt, killing every nomai near instantly. Unbeknownst to the nomai, the dangerous radiation dissipates upon touching water, and slow as it may be, it is only a radioactive element, it will eventually decay. The 4-eyed creatures the nomai were so fond of are, at that stage in their evolution, semiaquatic, and the water protected those still submerged. Time passes, the 4 eyes evolve, and eventually become a sentient species in their own right. Now it is time for their newest astronaut to head into space, despite the inevitable sun supernova that is a mere 22 minutes away. Luckily for the new astronaut, they just happened to be the closest sentient being near a historical nomai artifact, what appears to be a nomai statue, when its use is finally made known. Who knows how many times our new astronaut has died before the coordinates were found, but now it is up to them to "stop the supernova" and save the universe, if they do not find out some other horrible truths along the way. Eventually, the eye of the universe is found, and our new harthian astronaut assembles the illusions of his friends projected by the eye to gain the motivation to create the next big bang, and maybe even become the new eye of the universe themself (if not just absorbed into a hive mind of all past cycles).

Just got through this entire playthrough in only a few days (DLC next, yay!). I had watched all of RT's playthrough before I knew how much of a gem this game was, so I never got to play it, and I kind of regret it, because I can tell the lore exploration would have been so rewarding (although I don't think my brain is big enough for some of these puzzles, lol). A blind playthrough of Outer Wilds is something I'll never be able to have. However, watching your stream of this game is the closest thing I could have come to playing for myself. I absolutely loved watching you figure out the mechanics, realizing the time loop for the first time, and piecing together all of the information you received from each planet. I felt as if I was experiencing the game right alongside you, even though I already new a few things before you did. As you said, this is an amazing playthrough of an amazing game, and I'm stuck here with a feeling of existentialism that is both unsettling and hopeful, because if there's one thing this game is good at, it's reminding you to stop and smell the pine trees.

0 lines is one option, you can create a line from any one point to any other, so that's 6 to start from and 5 to go to, but half of that because half of those are the opposite way. From there you have 4 left to go to and you can't select any previous points as that deactivates them, so it's 1 + 15 + 60 + 180 + 360 + 360 = 976 permutations per symbol, i think, because you have to start at the previous point. With three symbols you get 976^3 = 929 714 176.
If you could turn on and off any line individually, such that it is possible to have disconnected lines in a symbol (i don't think you can), then the math is slightly different. There are 5+4+3+2+1 = 15 lines in the hexagon, each line could represent a bit. with three symbols that gives you 2^45 possibilities, or 35 184 372 088 832.
Either the coordinate system is extremely coarse, it's a relative system with some maximum jump value, or the system makes no sense to begin with.

    • @TheRkyeet
      @TheRkyeet Год назад +2

how did you arrive at this math? With just 0, 1 and 2 connected lines theres a possible 1+15+62=78 permutations, with much more the more lines you add. Sure it still won't be enough to cover the whole universe, but they need a little more credit than that.

Great playthrough. Lots of interesting stuff and happy little accidents. There had to be at least 3 or 4 times in there where I was simultaneously amazed and angry at you for finding the path forward through complete blind luck or outright wrong logic, without even realizing you were doing it. The cool thing is, I'm pretty sure most people will have one or two of those moments in their playthrough. The devs really gave us a lot of freedom to just explore, without holding our hands too much, while leaving enough breadcrumbs that we never really lose our way.
I do think you will love the DLC; don't wait too long tho, and maybe refresh your memory on the events of the base game before you play it, as a lot of the plot points of the DLC make more sense with the context of the main game. I played it well after I had finished the main game, and I had some trouble figuring out how certain facts connected back up to what I had learned in my main playthrough.
